"Hunter x Hunter is about a kid whose dad went out to get cigarettes one day and never came back, so his son set out on an adventure, not to find his dad, but to find out what the hell is so great about cigarettes." -best description of this series I've ever found.

I like how Yorknew ends so abruptly. It makes it feel like a Coen brothers movie. It didn’t end in a big massive final battle because it wouldn’t make sense for the characters to do that and the author didn’t want to force it just for the sake of having a big fight. It takes a lot of confidence in your writing to do that and Togashi’s is totally earned.
I strongly believe that Togashi was so tired with YYH that he decided to make a manga where he can make any kind of arc he wants and use different cast if needed to be.
How I took Gon's reaction to Ging's message was a bit different. I was convinced at this point that Gon cares less about finding Ging to have him as a father figure as initially expected. Gon seems to care about doing what Ging did. Going through the same experiences and walking down a similar path to find out what's so great about it. But also, his naivete says that those experiences MUST be great. Great enough to leave your own child for. I don't think Gon holds any ill will toward Ging, but the idea of finding out what's so great about said path gets him excited and he wants to experience it too. Because he knows deep down, that under normal circumstances, a parent wouldn't just leave like that. This is how I took Gon's reaction to Ging's message. "He says I should enjoy the game" and doesn't he do everything in his power to do just that?
As a person that too doesn't know his father, this is the answer. I've always understood Gon like that, at his age (and with the maturity that he shows) he doesn't need nor wants a paternal figure, he just wants to know what Ging did, and why he did it. So after receiving that message, that he should enjoy the game, he takes it to his heart, and as we see through the whole arc, he does.

Mark is a Specialist type nen user, and his power manifests as the ability to constantly see, read, and experience the best something has ever been, up to that point.
not according to Hisoka, I see him mostly as a Manipulator, here is the Hisoka divination by the way 1- Enhancers are determined and simple. Most of them never lie, hide nothing, and are very straightforward in their actions or in their thinking. Their words and actions are often dominated by their feelings. They are generally very selfish and focused on their goals. This is reflected in their Nen as enhancers typically rely on simple and uncomplicated Hatsu techniques. 2- Transmuters are whimsical and prone to deceit. Transmutation users have unique attitudes, and many are regarded as weirdos or tricksters. Often they put forth a facade while hiding the truer aspects of their personalities. Even when they don't hide their personalities they rarely reveal their true intentions. Many Transmuters rely on techniques that give unique and unpredictable properties to their Nen that reflects their personalities. 3- Emitters are impatient, not detail-oriented, and quick to react in a volatile manner. Many of them are quick-tempered and hot-blooded. They resemble the Enhancers in building their impulsivity, but the difference with them, they probably tend to calm down and forget easier. Because of the nature of Emission, many Hatsu techniques created by emitters are primarily long range. 4- Conjurers are typically high-strung or overly serious and stoic. They are often on guard as to be cautious. They are very observant and logical, rarely falling into traps. Being able to analyze things calmly is the strength of Conjurers. Many of the items that conjurers create are often used by them in a very deliberate and practical, logical fashion. 5- Manipulators are logical people who advance at their own pace. They are all for arguments and tend to want to keep their families and loved ones safe. On the other hand, when it comes to pursuing their own goals, they do not listen to what others might have to say about it. While manipulators often use techniques that allow them to control their opponents they also prefer to use an inanimate medium to control that can be used versatility (such as smoke or pieces of paper hardened with Shu). 6- Specialists are individualistic and charismatic. They won't tell you anything important on them, and refrain from being close friends, but, because of their natural charisma that draws others, they are always surrounded by many people. Because Specialization is unique and can have many facets, most Specialists possess only one Hatsu technique.
I think one of the best ways to approach the Greed Island arc is the way how Gon did it. With curiosity and fun. The same way you approach every new video games you wanna try, no prejudice, no expectations, just go with the flow. Also, I loved how the Phantom Troupe is still present in this arc, not as antagonists, but as side characters that have their own goals and motivations.
I'm always surprised that no one talks about tagashis in-depth use of different subjects in this series that clearly stem from his real life interests. Like the detail about how auctions work, buying and selling of rare artifacts, and how to find out if theyre real or not, even going into dodgeball in immense detail as if we were watching an anime about dodgeball and yet it never feels like it strays from the story it's telling.
@@johnsean3856 not necessarily but that comes to how you break down a story to its most basic parts, would be really disingenuous if someone did the same to hunter x hunter or naruto, arcs hold similar starting points in most manga but the character arcs, exploration, rules are all pretty different and make each arc enjoyable, Skypeia is hard to compare to Water 7 or even Impel Down. (Even saying every arc has a character with a sad backstory is dishonest as most manga even hunter x hunter does a similar thing, not really an issue imo tho). 💀🙏🏽
Mark loving Gon's character so much fills me with so much dread and anticipation for THAT moment. Man he will lose his mind. Also RIP Kentaro Miura. Your memory will live forever in your work and the countless fans you gained along the way.
@@pajama5364 yeah i really hope Mark watches some of the episodes in the arc. I know he has for some of the previous ones but i don’t think he mentioned anything about it in this video
This arc made me realize that Togashi is not particularly making hxh for other people to watch but more for himself and what he feels like doing and honestly I don't mind that at all. A lot of people just happen to enjoy the story just as much as he does.
I’ve been depressed since last night reading about Kentaro Miura’s death. Hopefully this helps me smile a little bit more as your other HxH and OP reviews did.
Normally I'd roll my eyes at this type of comment but holy shit man I was shocked when I heard Miura died and I don't even read berserk. A legend that will be missed
Oh no... This comment informed me of his death. Rest in peace to one of, if not THE greatest mangakas in existance. His gorgeous artwork is unmatched in the medium.
Every arc in this show is so great because it is all so different but so similar at the same time. But it's all so perfectly made, Togashi is just amazing with his writing
i really think togashi just makes hxh for himself, it somehow feels like "this arc won't be liked by every reader" but ig that's the point. i always think of togashi's health when reading the manga, besides ig the exposition gets too overwhelming for a many readers so it's easy for them to dislike it
I spent last night crying and trying to accept the fact that Miura passed away at such an early age. Thanks Mark, I needed a pick me up to finish this week
@DiaKorrus 18 Rickert would have bitch slapped Griffith to death, while Guts and Casca would be trying to raise their moon child, something like that. And Puck and Isidro would be the chaotic uncles
"Killua, thanks a lot. I'm really glad I got to meet you" "Idiot, cut it out. You're embarrassing me" "How can it be embarrassing if I mean it?" The scenes where Killua blushes are always funny and heartwarming 😆
RIP Miura sensei , you won’t be forgotten for a long time . Although I haven’t seen or read berserk , it is an amazing and highly influential series as most of my favourite manga/anime are inspired by it (for example Attack on Titan , JJK etc) And I can safely say that berserk is good bcz of how much praise I’ve heard of it , I’ll probably read it sometime later
Togashi lost his mind officially after that with text bubbles I strictly remember there being a whole page of just talking with barely 2 panels with picture s

See, I absolutely love how intricate this arc is with Greed Island as a game. I can 100% believe a bunch of developers came together to make this. Makes me way more invested into the setting.
@@rommieyay4444 I wouldn't go so far as to say it is "obviously" dedicated, but it is very likely due to the fact that both Togashi and Naoko were referencing each other's series at the time. In one of the chapters of Sailor Moon there was an advert for Greed Island in a store window.
I know I can't be the only one that feels this way, but I'd love for you to consider checking out Berserk sometime. You shouldn't feel pressured to read it due to Miura's passing, but I think you'd love the dedication he put into its writing and art.
PS1 music GOATED & I love how you said this is the best & worst at times cause Bisky is my fav HXH character but this arc bored me to tears personally lmaoooo I’ve watched it twice & it’s just not for me lol
Something that I think is cool is that Togashi made designs functions and description for every single card even the ones not shown which is something I found to be surprising because other authors like Tite Kubo will only create descriptions and uses for what they need, e.g. Tite Kubo only designed the kido based spells shown in the manga and didn't design hado#1-98 because he didn't use them.
also I completely agree that the exposition of the cards is pretty boring and well long, also I don't mind as much as some people cause I watched the anime then read the manga and so my original learning of the cards was more of them using them at least that's what I remember so the manga didn't bother me as much but the cards exposition is a lot.
I 100% get why you wouldn't like the game and the rules BUT I love card games, and the way this arc went about explaining the rules and mechanics of the island I absolutely loved. This was my favorite arc because it didn't stray from the rules of its universe and explored the different ways to win and lose and of course ways to manipulate the game. Adding Biscuit on top of it all was just the swole old lady cherry on top
As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Those 4 pages of info dump were absolute treasure to me. I loved the details of the game. I loved learning with the characters as they navigated the game. I didn’t find it overwhelming or cumbersome. It was one of my favorite parts of this arc. It’s what gave this arc so much uniqueness. I never considered that someone would find it lame. Which is kind of amazing. Trash or treasure? What an interesting phenomenon. Thousands of people viewing an identical abstract and seeing it in thousands of different ways. That is amazing in itself.
We are allll soooo glad that you came to the realization that Kurapika BROUGHT A DAMN SHOVEL TO THE MATCH WITH UGOVIN. It's easily one of the most badass moments in anime, period.
Honestly, while going over every little function of the cards would be annoying, I personally felt like if they didn’t, it would be impossible to completely understand them, and people would just see them as plot conveniences.
honestly man. Never read berserk but i do love manga and hearing of his death is shocking. To put into perspective its like if JRR Tolkien died after writing the Two Towers part. RIP Miura one of the GOATs
Having finish Greed Island yesterday, I really didn't mind the rules because for me it showed that Tagashi really tried to make something that stuck strictly to the rules, and in that way to win you have to use the rules already established creatively, making it entertaining for me
Glad you addressed the critique regarding how abrupt and in some parts surface level the Yorknew review was... I was especially confused why you left out a scene as important as Phinks & Feitan explaining why the Phantom troupe can't kill Kurapika nor his friends which is very important cause.. yeah the Spider would've otherwise indeed sought and killed them. That scene also explained about post-mortem nen which is a really interesting side to it! All in all Phinks thanking Gon after knowing what they did for Paku was one of the best moments for me in Yorknew personally since it further shows that the Phantom Troupe members are still human and not some evil characters for the sake of being evil. I recommend talking a bit more about nen, characters and how they tie to the story as a whole since that's what makes HxH so amazing, that's what the fans love it for! And it might be good to take your time with the reviews especially when the Chimera Ant arc draws near.. It's best not to rush it cause the story telling in HxH is very deep.
Honestly mate, it feels a bit like you're reading too much into Gon's relationship with Jing and projecting some personal bias into how you think Gon feels about Jing. Jing is a person that makes things and does things he thinks are cool, then wants to share them with people. Gon is curious about who Jing is and why his adventures are so important to him; he's not looking to be accepted by Jing or be "enough" for him. The core of the message from Jing is simply "Hey Gon, You're here because you were curious about who I am. This is a game I made with my close friends and put a lot of love in to. If you want to know about me as a person, enjoy this thing I made to the fullest! This is who I am." And Gon goes "Neat! I'll have fun with the game then." Simple as that. Also, the players in this game aren't stuck there, yet you make it sound like they HAVE to win in order to escape, making winning the primary goal for that group, but that's not the case. They can leave at any time, either with a card or by boat, they just want the money reward for completing it. Their goal isn't to play and enjoy the game, it's to min-max the system so they can get it over with as soon as possible, and Gon's not interested in speedrunning on a first playthrough.
Can't agree more, the projecting is kinda hard to watch especially to those who have finished the Manga, and the fact the players can leave anytime they want is quite essential to the review as well, missing that caused mark misunderstood it as a SAO situation, but I guess he will realize that in the next part of the arc.
Mark is definitely an Emitter nen user he projects himself and his own views so well plus he looks like leorio if he wore glasses and grew a soul patch lol
Can’t wait to watch this one! I’ve really enjoyed this and your One Piece series in particular. Also, although it’s not shonen I highly recommend you do Berserk next, especially given Miura’s passing.
Surely not. I got the manga with a marker there to go back and check every time cards were called out to see/ predict the strategies. Kind of a board game nerd, but I found it pretty well done.
I personally love all the needlessly complex systems Togashi makes up that will probably be used only once (like the cards in GI and the elevator in Chimera Ant arc). It really seems to me that Togashi is just enjoying himself creating rules and playing with them and that's nice
Nah, the immense detail and thought put into making a functioning card game within a Manga was impressive as hell to me. I enjoyed reading them and the rest of this arc greatly.
I took an bunch of online "which nen type are you?" tests a almost 10 years back. They came up almost uniformly with conjurer, with only 1 or 2 saying manipulator instead. I think it does fit with my personality and I eventually decided that I would get really into pokemon and attempt to conjure pokeballs I could use to capture and control enemies. Later I got into SMT and would try to develop the ability to combine my captured minions into more powerful forms.
That intro was amazing! A lot of people hate on greed island and in totally get it, but it gives us HxH’s Best Girl Biscuit so at the end of the day; totally worth
11:15 nah. What I took was that Gon is just straight forward, and expects everyone to be straight forward with him. The message was to enjoy the game, not worry about finding clues. So that's what is important here.

Mark seems to expect this story to work like one piece were every piece of information comes back later in a meaningful way and it's filled with flashbacks and emotional moments. But no. The mangaka just really likes to explain things and introduce fodder characters m
Can we take the time to appreciate how much work mark and his editors put into these reviews on a weekly basis, it's already done better then the DBS Manga Also RIP Kentaro Miura, you made an amazing series

Takes a certain eye and dedication to a vision to do what you do.
I can’t wait for Mark’s review of the chimera Ant arc. It’s personally my least favorite to look back on because of how off the wall it was to me but it has amazing moments and events that unfold. I wonder how in the world 1999 HXH’s Director would have approached the arc!? If I could put the chimera ant arc into 2 words they would be weird and bold.
Well, the 1999 director recently directed the 2019 anime adaptation of the classic manga Dororo. Imagine that but for the Chimera Ant arc and the Madhouse version would look like the Care Bears in comparison.
I disagree with you about Gon’s denial about his relationship with his father. To me it’s pretty clear that the point of his search for Ging from the beginning is the used symbolically. Gon was born to be a hunter, that’s why his potential is so great. He’s naturally curious, good with animals and he couldn’t fight the urge to hunt something, the catalyst being his father. So when Ging says to enjoy the game, that’s the part he fixated on because that’s what he wanted to do anyway, to continue to enjoy the journey he’s on. So his reaction to thing happening to ppl around him is sort of redundant to him, because he wants to play the game and enjoy as it was intended.
I actually think Gon is in denial of the trauma caused by his father leaving. We see that he didn't become a hunter or powerful to see his father. He became driven because he wanted to prove to himself worthy of seeing his father. He subconciously thought his father abandoned him because he isn't as worthy of attention or of dignity compard to his father's job (i.e., being a Hunter). The trauma's impact caused by abandonment can be seen in Gon's relationships, such as his willingness to sacrifice himself during the Yorknew City Arc because he treasured Killua but gave no shit about his life, since he (in Gon's eyes) wasn't worthy of being loved, cared for, and attended to. Ironically, Gon is more analogous to Killua than he realised.
@@john3260 I think that’s somewhat of a reach, but I can understand how you came to that. For me, it’s made pretty clear from the first chapter that Gon had an eye for adventure from the beginning. He never judged Ging, instead I think apart of Gon admires Ging, and his search for him was to understand and in turn experience whatever it is that lead Ging to making the decision to leave him behind. His willingness to sacrifice himself in certain situations doesn’t necessarily always call back to Ging, rather the thing that Gon treasures more than anything is his friends. Shown in his retrieval of Killua, how he didn’t want Kurapika to kill, and finally his willingness to sacrifice everything because of his own guilt over losing Kite. Speaking of Gon clearly sees Kite as being a father figure to him, much more than Ging even. When faced with the realization that Kite was “dead” he blamed himself, he was fully aware that his preceding actions would mean that he would never meet Ging. He accepted that, just so he could get the catharsis of destroying the thing that killed his friend/father figure.
@@leothelion2593 I think this post explains my thoughts better: www.reddit.com/r/HunterXHunter/comments/irvh51/gon_freecss_is_not_insane_and_the_next_person_who/
Seeing Greed Island reminded me of something.. YuYu Hakusho's manga has quite a few pages where Togashi lists off games he created in Junior High to play with his friends; Such as "Dice Roshamboxing" Where they drew their own boxers with stats, and special moves you could use by playing Rock-Paper Scissors, then whoever wins rolls dice to determine what kind of punch their character uses until they win. That probably explains the convoluted and suddenly involved nature of Greed Island; Born from Togashi's love of creating his own games. At first just to "Elude the letter of the law" and goof off at school without getting in trouble, then to involve them into his greater stories.
Man that intro gave me chills. Those original PS/SONY entertainment logo's wil forever have a hold on my nostalgia, when they turned up in ASTRO's playroom it instantly became my game of the year.
Mark: Gon's attempts at defending the game and his father is just denial me, having not yet watched the series but watchign these reviews anyway because Idon't even know: Maybe Gon's not in denial, he just...sees everything much, much differently from like EVERYONE else, including you?
That's pretty much how I always viewed it: Ging is a weirdo, and Gon just "gets" him. But Mark's alternate analysis is very interesting. It all comes down to one of the manga's first statements about Gon's father: Mito: "Why do you want to find your father? He abandonned you to become a Hunter." Gon: "Yup. Isn't that incredible? Being a Hunter must be so awesome for my dad to have made such a choice!" Is this denial about an abusive father, or is this wide eyed wonder towards the perspective of adventure? Maybe both? (IMO, the succession war arc kinda makes it clear it was always option two, but the fact that the two levels of reading coexist is super interesting)
1. Give it a watch. It'd be a shame that you are spoiled on some very important character moments. It's an outstanding series. 2. Gin is a terrible dad and person, but so far with a neat characterization. I think that is why Gon in some ways is in denial, or at least was back in this arc. The more we see of Gin as well as how other characters feel about him, the more we realize he's even more uncaring and selfish than expected. He does anything for the sake of adventure, even abandoning his own son. This also works on the flip side, like paying people insurmountable amounts of money. Gon being the somewhat sweet kid that he is, does eventually reframe his relationship with him in a healthier way. Personally, I think the kid just wants closure by meeting this dude and eventually pursuing his own personal goals.
You know, yes Yes it is. We barely got a glimpse of what it could've been at the World Tournament but it wasn't nearly enough and not as good as it could've been

Now that that's done I want to get back into it and having these wonderful reviews has been a great way to give myself a quick reminder of what has happened in the series so far. so thank you!
Anyone else think that greed island is a lot more fun in the 2011 anime than having to read all the exposition in the manga? It does a phenomenal job of making Togashi’s exposition more bearable and exciting

As a person that too doesn't know his father, this is the answer.

Outside of Togashi's writing style, each arc of HxH is so unique from one another.

Adding Biscuit on top of it all was just the swole old lady cherry on top

Mark: "I don't think there is anything like this."
Editor-san: *Proceeds to point out an entire genre that runs off this same premise*

I love all the Dragon Quest music being played in the background
Their goal isn't to play and enjoy the game, it's to min-max the system so they can get it over with as soon as possible, and Gon's not interested in speedrunning on a first playthrough.
he is totally projecting and i think will be let down because of that
Yeah no I agree with Mark, it’s much more clearer in the manga because 2011 made a new ending
Can't agree more, the projecting is kinda hard to watch especially to those who have finished the Manga, and the fact the players can leave anytime they want is quite essential to the review as well, missing that caused mark misunderstood it as a SAO situation, but I guess he will realize that in the next part of the arc.

Please please PLEASE keep reviewing the manga material even after the animes ending !! There’s so much good stuff there
11:15 nah. What I took was that Gon is just straight forward, and expects everyone to be straight forward with him. The message was to enjoy the game, not worry about finding clues. So that's what is important here.

Facts, thank you !
Speaking of
Gon clearly sees Kite as being a father figure to him, much more than Ging even. When faced with the realization that Kite was “dead” he blamed himself, he was fully aware that his preceding actions would mean that he would never meet Ging. He accepted that, just so he could get the catharsis of destroying the thing that killed his friend/father figure.

that opening was the cutest thing ive ever seen.
Mark: Gon's attempts at defending the game and his father is just denial
me, having not yet watched the series but watchign these reviews anyway because Idon't even know: Maybe Gon's not in denial, he just...sees everything much, much differently from like EVERYONE else, including you?
Not to mention Gon is a child. Of course he's gonna see things differently than an adult or an older teenager
this is what I also thought
That's pretty much how I always viewed it: Ging is a weirdo, and Gon just "gets" him. But Mark's alternate analysis is very interesting. It all comes down to one of the manga's first statements about Gon's father:
Mito: "Why do you want to find your father? He abandonned you to become a Hunter."
Gon: "Yup. Isn't that incredible? Being a Hunter must be so awesome for my dad to have made such a choice!"
Is this denial about an abusive father, or is this wide eyed wonder towards the perspective of adventure?
Personally, I think the kid just wants closure by meeting this dude and eventually pursuing his own personal goals.
bro you should really give Hunter x Hunter a shot these reviews are great but man is the series brilliant definitely worth at least trying :)
