Hey guys, when we got our 21.6ft Galaxy assessed with our 80series towing, we had an engineer come at the same time.
We were over in the van also, but the engineer got an extra 410kg out of the van because of the heavy chassis and axles. wrote up a new plate, riveted it on and done. Engineer was $550.00. Cheers guys, Brian and Deb
That’s awesome guys!! We can do the same if we get a bigger tow car as we are limited at 3.5t 🤷♀️ but it is a great idea !!
Yeah guys think very hard about putting heavy items in the cab especially with your family in there.
Even though we dont expect things to go wrong, they can at any moment and if it was me, well I just couldn't live with that. Cheers guy's enjoy your channel
Thanks for the tips will defiantly rearrange again !!! Thanks for following the journey 👍🤠
Great video guys. Very informative and something I will be looking at when considering my set up. Thank you heaps and certainly appreciate you putting this out there. 👍
Good stuff guys..
This should be the final step for wveryone that heads off travelling.
Great to see you guys leading by example.
Thanks Rick !!! Can’t wait to get out in that boat mate 😉 thanks for watching as always.
Hi Guys
Congrats of the new Bub.
Great to see you back.
Also fantastic to see your doing the right thing for all the Family’s safety & your 4wd & caravan is fully insured.
Look forward to watching more adventures
Stay safe Thanks
What a great ep. James was excellent he made sense of it all just wish he was here in SA!
He is a mobile weigh station hahah might cost a bit to get him down there though 👍😂
Don’t put heavy stuff in the cab with you, roll overs are very common in caravan crashes.
Great episode guys! We’re currently having a full offroad van being built and also setting a Ranger up for long distance touring, early on in the Ranger build I just raised the white flag and got a full Lovell’s GCM/GVM upgrade done on it, there was no way known we were going to be even close to legal without it! There must be so many rigs out there that are running the gauntlet! Keep up the good work you lot! 👍
Thanks Greg and great foresight mate !! Thanks for following the journey👍🤠
Lovely Ep guys, Nice work to get it under, I took our both set ups to our local weigh bridge cost $30 each time, Its great to know we are legal.
Good thing you got that gvm upgrade in the Ute. Makes you realize how sketchy some setups are when you see them drive past.
Thanks guys, very informative, as a lot of people out there don't know the differences, nor their allowed weights (especially vehicle including people). As always keep laughing all of you, it makes the videos so much fun to watch. No cooking segments and no drone shots, look forward to the next episode. Thanks Nick, Elenya and clan.🤗🤗🤗🤗👶🤠
Thanks Hugo !!! The next vid has plenty of drone footage 😉 thanks as always Hugo !!
We are getting our set up weighed next week to start our half lap. We got it weighed 18 months ago and we’re all good so hoping for the same result 2nd time around. Good to know your legal 👍
Hey Tracie hope your still under. It is good to know that’s for sure !👍🤠
Good move guys, I've been thinking about weighing our for ages. Nearly finished all the mods then load her up and weigh her , its the only way, yeah Nic I reckon most forget about rear axle weight also.
Awesome as .. I weight my Landcruiser troopy with full & sitting at 2.7 ton .. feels good to see we’re u are at ..
Interesting video guys i see you have a gcm and gvm upgrade to maxi makes me think maybe should have done that all the best Ron
Hey Ron if we didn’t have the gcm we would be over for sure !!! Thanks for watching 👍🤠
I swapped my big gas bottles for the smaller 4.5s. That saved a heap of weight on the front. Unless you really need them for remote touring.
Hey mick have thought of this. We do need them and we don’t but it does save a lot !! Thanks for watching!
I would love to know how many setups driving around are over weight 🤦♂️ bloody heaps.
Good to see you guys all good. 🤘🇦🇺🔥🍻
Good on you for getting the weights. It's good to remember we don't have to load to maximum, which reduces your safety margin. Why push the limits...
Good stuff 👍, overloading is easy when you start buying and packing , 🤪
It's important to weigh once your vehicle or van is fully loaded 🤔
Greetings and cheers 🍻 legends from south africa 🇿🇦
Hi, I suppose you might upgrade your vehicle now, thanks for your video , still following with interest, safe travels
Great vid guys and I will be changing some of my gear out thanks to the info. Huge one is have nothing in the cab as stated below no missiles that can hurt anyone. Also consider that you will be lighter again when at 1/2 a tank of fuel etc when travelling again. I suppose going through the van and culling stuff is like a spring clean. I have 3 cast iron camp ovens now at home and travel with the lighter spun steel oven in the van. What tinnie motor do you have now the 4 bangers are super heavy. All the best guys.
Hey guys great info have defiantly moved the missiles !! Yes and we travel most times without water tank in car full. Thanks for watching 🤠👍
Transferring heavy items to on the floor in the car has its own risks if not secured and there is a collision you have potentially lethal projectiles.
Very good informative information. Just a note: personally, I wouldn’t sacrifice water or fuels, I would sacrifice other items.
Also : I wonder if it’s would be a safer option to get weighed even if you are under weight. For instance. I have a Mitsubishi Triton with a home made camper trailer. I think I would be good to get weighed, even though I’m in no danger of going over GVM and the like, just as a safety during heavy breaking, thus giving a safer stopping distance by evening out the weight across the whole vehicle and trailer combination.
Yes agree defiantly worth getting weighed just so you know !! Thanks for watching 🤠
Stay safe, So So many Wobble Boxes on the Roads lately, Especially with Easter coming up, Wobble Box season.
Hey guy's I really enjoy your videos and good job on getting the weights looked at. If all Isuzu had to do was whack in some springs and shocks and say the Dmax could have a GCM of 7100kg and a GVM of 3600kg then they would be the top selling tow vehicle and flatten the opposition. There is a reason Isuzu and other manufacturers don't do this, because it's not safe. Definately not having a go at you guys but these GVM upgrades of that magnitude are ridiculous and while quasi legal in some states does not make them safe or desirable without significant engineering to the chassis, brakes, cooling system and drive train.
Agree John ! There isn’t many options out there though unless you start getting into trucks etc🫣
The big three truck manufactures in the US need to start building RHD full size trucks for the Australian market. We have a lot of choices in pickup trucks up to 14,000 lb/6,350 kg GVM and GCMs are getting pretty crazy. The 2023 F450 crew cab has a GCM of over 40,000 lbs/18,000 lkg (truck is 8,500 lbs/3,850 kg empty).
Cheap skate tip: Take your set up to your local tip, they have a weigh bridge for the rubbish trucks. Weighed mine for free.
@@elnick.adventures
Not per corner like the professional pads, but you can half drive on to weigh each end roughly. Obviously if weight limits are close then you'd probably want to spend money getting it done correctly.
So easy to be overloaded
I weighed my twin cab before doing a Simpson crossing and was 100kg over on the front and 230kg under on the rear
Look at the kings upright fridge, I’ve seen them vs bushman are the same.
Hey pat thanks for watching we ended up getting a dometic fridge. Was all we could get our hands on at the time. 👍🤠
@@elnick.adventures you won't go wrong, they are a great fridge. I wouldnt use a drop slide they are unnecessary weight for sure. With solar and good batteries having front opening fridge isnt really that bad in energy loss compared to chest. The convenience of open facing door and accessing items makes door opening a minal time effort. Having had, and using now both, Iwould not hesitate in recommending a good quality upright fridge.
No head shaking when mentioning fishing gear...could be the difference between life and death out there in the wilds...great video and it's a pity so many are too scared to do this because they know they are overweight...
Hey mark can’t get rid of the fishing gear !! Haha there would be a few people over out there ! 🫣
This video was awsome, we came away with some good learnings. One question, with the tinnie just a few inches above the vehicle cab, does this cause any 'whistle or excess wind' noise? Many thanks, great work
Thanks Jacqui! We learnt heaps!! We don’t get any wind noise at all!! 👍🤠thanks for watching
I got told that if you are in a accident the police will add up how many litres your van holds and use that as the weight regardless if you have water on board or not and also they may add the grey water tank on as well.
How can tow all weight be 1kg over?
There IS NO ADR REGULATION that states tow ball download must not exceed 10% of ATM .
It is a guide. The suggested tow ball download is between 5 and 12% depending on single or dual axles.
This is a misconception made by most people.
Interesting video, i warched a lot of your vids and wondered how you were with weight and thought mybe you are over.
So many people are totally ignorant .
We are just south of Newcastle NSW and doing the Great Ocean Road and yes I watched your video.
Today I took my Triton and Crusader Porthos to the weigh bridge at Warner Vale.
The GCM of the Triton is 5875 KG and we came in at 4920 so far so good.
The ball weight was 320 but max is 310 so that is bad.
The Triton was 2660 and that includeds the 320 kg ball weight.
The ATM of the van is 2500 and we came. In a 2580 so 80 kg over.
I took off the two gas bottles which are around 38 x kg plus a BCF portable solar panel, two folding tables, a Weber mini and put those in the ute.
This should decrease ball weight and reduce the ATM to close to the 2500 kgs.
We have 190 kg of water and its obvious but draining the tank or at least one would actually solve the problem.
Its not difficult to overload the van.
Its important because if Im involved in an acccident and im over weight then im. Up shit creek plus and its a BIG PLUS, the insurance company will disown me.
The fact the van is over will not be solved by a bigger tow vehicle.
The max of the van .is 2500 KG regardless of the GCM.
Sadly most people are ignorant of weights.
Dji
Totally agree with what you have said and glad you got weighed and could move some gear around to stay under thanks for watching and hope your trip goes well down south! Happy travels 🤠👍
@elnick.adventures when I watched you Hreat Ocean Road video, it was the first of your videos as I was looking at peoples videos of where to visit.
I must admit, I thought they must be overweight with the van all the stuff on the back , the huge tool box , bikes, and the boat, no wonder you told the mother in law she couldn't come.Ok that was a joke.
It is funny but also scary that so many have absolutely no idea about caravan weight.
There is an erroneous notion jthat big land cruisers are better, however if you have mixed out the 3500kg towing capacity you end up with only around 200 kg left for the cruiser and that is before you have added passengers.
We're planning on going on to the West Victorian art trail, I just bought a DJI mini 3 pro drone so should get some good aerial video and also some stills.
Interesting, as far as I was aware and according to Lovell’s info the GCM is 7100kg less the tow ball weight
Great job guys.So your vehicle already has a gvm and gcm upgrade?cheersRod and Jenny
Great video, must be tough trying to adjust your living by weight. Do you know if distribution bars help with with loads on front and rear axles. To show I watched it looked like James misspelt Passenger ;)
Hahahah you caught him out !! The bars do help put weight from the rear axle to the front axle but mask the problem as when on 4WD tracks the bars have to come off so I think the bars are a last resort if you plan to offroad👍🤠
I enjoy watching these videos. It doesn’t take much to add weight. 😮
Just a hint though, I wouldn’t put heavy items at your boys feet. If you crash and the items are unrestrained it’ll cause massive injuries to anyone in the cab or even death. Sad but true😢
We have got rid of the heavy stuff now out of the cab. Thanks for watching👍
@@elnick.adventures ok sweet👌🏻 wasn’t trying to tell you how to run your life. Just a concerned emergency service worker
Wonder how many cartoon that guy gets for free due to extra weight 😁
I've towed some big things here in UK and rules are different. It's easy to go over but once you have it under, it puts less stress on the tow vehicle too, as well as making you legal. I updated the brakes on mine (cross drilled & grooved), just for piece of mind and got pads that's were less likely to suffer from fade due to heat.
Glad you got it under and legal, important stuff that and insurers will use anything they can to get out from paying 👍
We tow pretty heavy here in the US, but so far I haven't had to resort to those kind of modifications to get anything stopped. Downhill I am normally running on the exhaust brake so not putting too much heat into the brakes. Staying legal is crucial given the litigious nature here.
I have two trailers, with the lighter one being a 30 foot enclosed car trailer on a conventional hitch and having a GVM of 14,000 lbs/6,350 kg. My other trailer is a 26' flat bed gooseneck with a GVM of 26,000 lbs/11,800 kg. I have been towing both with a 2011 Ram 2500 6.7L diesel that was only rated to tow a little more than the 14k gvm. Even at 14k lbs I was always having payload issues so I sold it and ordered a 2023 Ford F450. Even the 26k trailer is 7,000 lbs/3,175 kg under the tow rating and 5,500 lbs/2,500 kg payload should give me enough headroom so that I don't have to worry too much about pin weight.
I don't want to give the police any excuse to pull me over.
Just because the vehicle manufacturer says your twin cab ute can tow 3500 Kg, doesn't mean it's safe because its not. The towing mass needs to be greater than the towed mass, it's basic physics.
Also you should be aiming to have all final weights less than the max figures allowed as being just under isn't good enough. Unfortunately, the greater majority of setups on the road are illegal as they are well overweight, you only need to check the recent date from each states relevant authority from conducting roadside tests.
Finally, it's not about your insurance and if you are covered or not, the priority should be to ensure you don't injure or kill other innocent road users, unfortunately there are still way too many caravan users not listening.
If the laws change spend the $$ and go get a post rego GVM GCM upgrade. If you needed to buy a new car then you can get a brand new Dmax but get a lovells GVM GCM upgrage or move to a Ranger, BT-50 etc. Chevy 1500 and 2500 have GVm GCp upgrade options at factory. Jmacx offer GVM upgrade for DS or DT 1500 the older one and working on or already have a GVM GCM upgrade to match the USA for the Ram 2500. Loveels do landcruiser as well but Jmacx is best for LCs
Hey Corey great info !!! We have got the GVM GCM upgrade on this Ute. 👍🤠 would have no chance other wise. Thanks for watching.
The diesel Ram 2500s are a tough combination because the extra weight of the engine (6.7 Cummins is 1,100 lbs) eats into your payload. I have been dealing with it for years with my 2011 Ram 2500 diesel and finally sold it in September.
If you are thinking of a 3/4 ton (F250 or Ram/Chevy/GMC 2500) it is definitely worth the little bit extra to go to a 1 ton SRW (F350 SRW or Ram/Chevy/GMC 3500 SRW). If you are really concerned about weight the DRW trucks all have a GVM of 14,000 lbs/6,350 kg and tow ratings of over 30,000 lbs with a diesel.
I have been dealing with payload issues for the last 8 years on my 2011 Ram 2500. Finally got tired of playing around and ordered an F-450. This increase capacity by around 3,000 lbs/1,360 kg of payload and 18,000 lbs/8,150 kg of towing capacity.
thank you for video
did by new springs and shockers to keep your right in your 4x4 so tow caravan because 5 people in 4x4 ?
Don't really agree with the guys analogy that a light tow ball is the reason for sway. there is absolutely not rule of 10% on the towball, it has been proven by people such as Robert Pepper that too much on the towball or too much on the rear of the trailer is a reason for sway and the best way to correct the problem is to have the load in the middle above the axles. Towball weight is to prevent the car and van from separating the van has on its compliance plate the towball weight stick to that or a bit above and you should really be ok.
Thanks so much for your opinion appreciate it (: thanks for watching 🤠
I don't think lovell's offer that GCM anymore, and it's ridiculous. Just put heavy-duty springs in and nothing else, no brake upgrade or diff, etc.
Hi Nick could you give me a in site in where you had your gvm,gcm upgrade please.Did you get it done in QLD?Or locally Port Macquarie as am in Newcastle area and everything so dear around here.Pushing the limits on the Ford Ranger for the new van coming and would like to take more fishing gear.Tight lines and may god bless Rod and Jenny
Hey rod we got it done at mid coast 4WD centre 👍 and the engineer was in Newcastle that signed it off👍 thanks for following the adventure guys!! I hope there is some tight lines soon !!
hey guys, this is a great video and explains it all great. Are you going to re-weigh the van for a new atm total? In the vid you had to empty a water tank and were still 80kgs over, do you think you'd be under if you filled both tanks? or will you now travel with just the one tank full?
Hey guys we individually weighed i teams we got rid of and shuffled things around in the car and got rid of the heavy fridge in the car so we could put more items in the car. We got rid of 190 kegs. So can have water tanks full now plus all the Jerry’s were full and the boat fuel so there is about 60kg there. We never travel with full water tanks only on remote trips as Maxy sucks more fuel and there are generally plenty of water points we will be looking at increasing the vans atm in the future though;)
@@elnick.adventures sweet as! how many lts per hundred do you average with the full load? how have you found going from the pull out fridge to the upright?
18.5L per 100 👍 we are really liking the upright fridge - so much easier to get too etc 🤠
Hay guys loved your information. Is your car a dmax ? How can you have a gcm of 7100 k ? We want to run a 3300 k van and Ute weight is 2500 k We can tow 3000 k so might have to upgrade. But a f truck is only thing over 7000k ?
Hey we had the d max upgraded with suspension etc. But have recently
Purchased a 4x4 truck that has a gvm of 7.5t 💪
What would the kids weigh, oh my bad you said in the van, good the boys can stay
How did you get the 7100 GVM approval - interested to get mine done
Hey mick we went to a lovells installer and they sorted the engineering and everything for us. Was just our local 4WD store 👍
Hi..just watched your weigh in Post..seems like you can resolve your weight by just not carrying so much water / fuel..just fill up prior to hitting the beaten track..that’s My Plan.
I believe that in the case of an accident mate they assume that all water and fuel tanks are full. Also all gas and jerrycans are also full. So if if your in the wrong place at the wrong time, no insurance. Be careful
@@terryglynn3255 think your onto something mate. Why listen to a keyboard warrior like me. Do your own research. Accident investigation unit, police even the professional weight company’s like this video. Then you will know how they weight your vehicles after an accident. As I said, be careful
Cheers
We never carry full water tanks if there are plenty of water point around thanks for watching !!👍
What model D-Max do you have that has a 7000kg GCM ?? Or, did you do an upgrade ?
Hey Garry it’s a 2016 lsm d max with a lovells 7.1 gcm upgrade and a 3.6 gvm upgrade. Thanks for watching👍
Hey guys which model is maxi! That's a huge gcm at 7100kg most models are 6000kg??
Please, no heavy stuff unrestrained in the cab.... they become projectiles in an accident.... it’s just not worth it mate, leave it behind if you have to.
@@elnick.adventures 👍 love the videos, you guys are great, reminds us of when we hit the road with our kids 12 years ago ( only for 6 mths though). The new van looks amazing. Looking forward to following your adventures, maxi can do it! 😎
Bugga looks like the new house extensions Gunna put Maxxi into retirement
When you order a new van must be annoying you can't put your normal camping gear in and fill the supplied water tanks full ?
Yes a bit but this van is de rated to suit our tow vehicle. It has a axle group loading of 3.7 r so if we had a bigger tow vehicle we could carry more in the van
You can't get that GCM upgrade in most states!
I can’t believe that the dmax has a higher gcm than my 200 series, which had a pre rego gvm upgrade. Individual state rules don’t make much sense in one country.
A very interesting clip, thanks. But please don’t have noisy kids around as this is potentially life saving information your filming, thanks again for the relevant info.
Thanks for watching! However what are we meant to do with our kids? We are travelling and it’s only us!
@@elnick.adventures pfffft this guy... Honestly!
Anyway, Cracking job guys. Love all your vids! re watching all from start to finish with my noisy kids. 😂
What model is your car ? Has it had a gcm upgrade to get the 7 ton rating
@@elnick.adventures nice I’ve been looking at the dmax. I still suggest you guys see if you can get that chassis strengthened if your carrying that weight. I know they do kits for other models 👍
If they made these vehicles to take these weights.instead of getting upgrades. It cost a fortune .iv had a landcruiser for 18 months .all I can put in it is 600kg.tow ball weight 300kg .I'm 90 kg the kelpie 20kg that's with no gear .leaves sweet fa .total bullshit .cruisers going .I'm going to buy a truck .one good thing I can get 20k more than wat I paid for it
i,LL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO HAVE THE BLOODY GREAT mCMANSION VANS WHEN SMALLER , LIGHTER UNITS ARE NOT ONLY CAPABLE OF DOING THE JOB BUT A LOT SAFER AND EASIER TO TOW. tHE TOWING CAPACITY OF THESE VEHICLES ADVERTISED AT 3500KG IS JUST PLAIN BULLSHITE.
I think the boat needs to go, and seeing as I’m a good bloke I’ll give you $500 for it. I’ll be doing you a favour
You're running really close to limits when you factor the growing up of the kids as well.
What i want to know is how does a dmax get a 7100kg gcm? I smell BS here
Lovells do the kit then you get the engineering cert 👍 thanks for watching 🤠
Time for a yank tank
Should have got a lighter van if planning on keeping the dmax, that's a heavy van
As a heavy vehicle driver, I can tell you, there's a pile of ridiculously over limit camping rigs on the road. Along with under educated drivers. Well done you getting the weight check done and being aware of the issue 👏 👍most people aren't aware of the insurance policy problem either 🙄
Yeah you see a lot of the roads (: thanks for watching 🤠
