Welcome to part 4 of Mod Month! I’m Abby, and Vinyl Monday is my weekly series where I chat about classic albums in my collection that I love. Bands like Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, JAMC, The Cure, Spiritualized / Spaceman 3, Sisters Of Mercy, RATM, Sonic Youth, New Order, Ride, Mudhoney, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., The Stone Roses🍋, The Whipping Boy, Verve, etc, etc. (to name just a few)
I started buying Slowdive E.P.'s from their very first release (and L.P.'s too). And I still have 'em. Actually, I bought quite alot of UK / Irish Shoegaze bands E.P.'s & L.P.'s in the late 80's / early 90's. As well as seeing many of them era band (some on numerous occasions) Live.
But, Slowdive...💚 they're one the special ones

I booked them at my bar in Toronto a few times. First as Molly Rankin in 2010 and then as Always in 2013...It was very obvious they were destined.
that’s so cool! molly was chatting with the audience about some of their early gigs between songs. she told this great story about playing the space ballroom back then

After The Earthquake still hasn’t left my rotation. It excellently blends several decades of pop/rock music into such a fun, shimmery, catchy tune
Blue Rev by Alvvays was my runaway Best Album of 2022. The band took their name from an obscure Tom Verlaine song .. Always on the excellent 1981 Dreamtime album & even named a song Tom Verlaine in homage to the late guitar 🎸 great. Tom is one of my all time favorite musicians & was an influence on the brilliant Nels Cline ..guitarist in Wilco. Cruel Country by Wilco was my 2nd favorite album of 2022. ✌️
Missed this video the first time around. Saw the clip in this year’s mod month and immediately pulled it up. Got to seem them live April 2024. Fantastic show!!
I’ve listened to this album so many times on loop! One of my favorites is “Many Mirrors”. When the song gets to the final chorus, phased pre-chorus and all, it feels like absolute musical euphoria!
one thing that makes Vinyl Monday so good is how good you are at telling the stories behind these albums. also YOU GOT THE SET LIST? that's awesome!
i got a set list! there were 7 at my show, 1 for each band member and 2 for the equipment techs. kinda glad i got a tech list - those didn’t have electrical tape holding them to the floor, and tape is so hard to store

Easy on your own is a tender lyric. I can hear that crazy ice cream van inspiration, they have mentioned, effective in Bored in Bristol. Maybe they regret the balance of a track like Pharmacist being out there but they won't regret the album.

13:25 - And that's ALMOST EXACTLY what happened to Yes in 1972! Bill Bruford quit to join KC, and Alan White joined with four days to learn everything until the opening gig in Dallas. Like Alvvays's Abby, he never left. 😊

slight correction at 12:30, they dressed as ZZ Top in 2022 and i was lucky enough to be there :) in 2021 they were dressed as vampires
Love this band! I saw them as the lineup for the Decembrists years ago in Atlanta. I liked them but was there for the Decembrist 😅. Now I prefer Alvvays!
I really dug “ Marry me Archie” the guitar solo at the end brings me tears ALWAYS.

This album is a Modern Classic
I applaud reaching beyond all the old records, it's good for this channel. I regret it was mostly lost on me, the only new vinyl release I have recently bought was a test record , and I check out the mod music mentioned on UA-cam. Yet I still type a few words to trigger the tracking algorithm that values a contribution, to help keep this woman supplied in fabric, because I know , eventually , she will go beyond sewing fashion and into art.

I liked this album a lot, Tile by tile and Velveteen were the songs that got me hooked on 😂 but I’ve cried listening to Belinda says as well! Alvvays are one of my favorite artist. I liked your criticism, quite interesting.
Great review. I have a copy on the way. I was picking out an LP by A Place To Bury Strangers from The Flenser and hit on this album and remembered I saw your to me earlier. Listened to a few things along the way…sold.
…and for me, I could care less about the mix or what the lyrics are. This was true for me way before I saw Dino Jr and My BV at the Ritz in 92(-ish). That’s part of music for me - music and songs are not concrete things. There are no words. That’s why it’s music and not a book. Something like that.
I’m still looking for that girl who stood in front of me at the Green Mind / Loveless gig. We were all crowded in together - no mosh pit for me, that got old fast in 82, never mind 92. She had something in her little backpack that kept hitting me in the chest. At least she stopped jumping during the hypnotic noise section of the Val set.

True Story - so I've got my elbows on the lip of the hardwood stage at the Starwood and the Go-Go's took the stage and Belinda didn't care in her shimmering silver miniskirt. My elbows, on the stage, 170 people in a medium room and a four-foot stage. Maybe five. Glorious. 1979 or 1980.
Love love love this album. Pressed could be a Smiths song (and one of the better ones at that)

alvvays is genius, blue rev is a blissful ride start to finish on kaleideocoping sonic waves. my favs are the soaring & acrobatic & sensual velveteen & it's shout out to ah-ha's take on me, & the smashing lollipop power jangle of many mirrors, esp when combined with the stardew valley sherbet sky sunset comet heart explosion animated video. there's also great bonus tracks with the sirius xm session in january & a cover of the go-go's jane wiedlin's solo hit rush hour & the kexp live radio set from last october. thank you for covering this fantastic band & their outstanding album! 💙🌊💙🎶💙😎💛🌼🤍☄💙🍧🧡🚂🤎🎸💗🔥🧨💣💥✨🙌😊 Edit: have to give you a huge huge thank you for the shout out to sheridan's peg band project & the sideshows lp, streaming it right now & loving this so much, it's really great album that pulls you in immediately & welcomes you in & hits you with one smiling surprise after another. found an ep from 2014 called living with abbreviations to get into next, thanks so much, your channel is the freaking best!!! 🤗

Drank a lot of Blue Rev in Montreal and Toronto at the Bell Centre, Molson Centre, Olympic Stadium, Pepsi Forum, Sona, Stereo and the Guvernment during the early 2000s...good times!
so from memory would you say it's the canadian counterpart to seagram's or four loko? i'm very curious about this
@@abigaildevoe it is like a Monster energy drink(has Guarana and Ginseng in it), only with vodka in it so it is about 7% Alcohol. Ingredients are carbonated water, sugar, vodka, citric acid, artificial cherry and raspberry flavour, and all the smaller ingredients found in energy drinks. the Blue Rev tastes a little like cherry cough syrup. They also make a Red Rev that is Watermelon/Grapefruit flavoured. I have had some Red Rev that had a grapefruit dominant taste(bitter), and some that had a watermelon dominant taste (sweet). Either way you drink a few and get a buzz. I am not sure how the seagrams tastes or what is in it...looked up four Loko......used to be sold but stopped as it contained too much caffeine. Blue Rev (and red) are similar in that they contain Guarana...which has caffeine in it. Guarana also contains theophylline and theobromine, which are chemicals similar to caffeine. So same idea.....energy boost and alcohol! I like the effect.....but it is not for everyone!

I should give Alvvays more of a shot, I like Archie, Marry Me and Dreams Tonite but never really went further.
I guess in part as those songs felt like other bands - Archie particularly reminds me of Camera Obscura
I totally agree with Velveteen and Tile By Tile lacked. I honestly liked Side B more than Side A at first listen. But after 2 additional listens, the album grew a lot on me. Got 2nd in my Top 10 Albums of 2022. Traveled to Minnesota to see them live, and they killed it!
Pomeranian Spinster is their most punk Alvvays song ever. Bored in Bristols is soooo good, no shame to say it's a favorite.

Tom Verlaine, Tile by Tile and online guy and Lottery noises are my favorites but all the tracks are great. So much joy and fun. Yeah you were right!! I’m sending this to my 19 year old niece who is an incurable Swiftie. Thank you so much. I rarely find new music that I like this much. I’m going to spin it again now. They have a song titled Tom Verlaine !!
Yes, I was the "house dancer" at the hottest r'n'r' club in L.A. outside of Madam Wong's, Chinatown, called the Starwood. 1975-1976 and again 1979-1980 and the punks beat me up. They had Link Wray, the Ventures, Rush, Tim Rose...Tom Verlaine? Whaaaaaa please do Marquee Moon - you know you want to...

my favorite album this decade and made me an alvvays convert :)
EDIT: I actually really love the flawed mixing! It was reflective of older shoegaze/dream pop record for me and gives the album a ton of personality and makes the songs stick. That alongside the brilliant songwriting and performances? Incredible.

o.m.g. the Go-Go's on the brain, I know that well...vacation, how do you get away? I saw them in whenever they hit West Hollywood - 79? The Go-Go's were amazing live.
I love Alvvays, great band. I discover them in late 2014 with the first album. At the same time I was getting into other modern favorite Post Punk/Shoegaze/Indie Pop/Dream Pop bands I love like Tame Impala, Ringo Deathstarr, Flyying Colours, Panda Riot, Silversun Pickups, Men I Trust, Deep Sea Diver, The Beaches, Wolf Alice, Savoy Motel, Heavy Cream, Angel Olsen, Chromatics, Phantogram, Wet Leg, Dry Cleaning, Savages, Idles, Beach House, Arcade Fire, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, Japanese Breakfast, Pom Pom Squad, Snail Mail, Clairo, Mallrat, Hazel English, Amyl and The Sniffers, Fountaines D.C., The xx, The Horrors, The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, etc, etc.
fun fact the world is a beautiful place is from the town where i went to college! the record store a block away from campus had a misprint copy of whenever if ever from the 2014 tour (i think?) and i bought it

This was my 2022 AOTY! When I looked at my year-end YT Music stats, it said I was in the top 0.2% of their listeners. I can't stop listening to Belinda Says.

Got to see them play at First Avenue in Minneapolis this past October, shortly after this album came out. Hearing Very Online Guy live was such a cool experience, and they were so amazing sounding in person! Love love LOVE this album!
It's unfortunate though, they don't actually play live but use backing tracks on everything.

I worked at a hire boat place as a teenager. The owner was a Belinda Carlisle fan and played it on repeat on the outdoor speakers. I know every word, and every note, but Ive had enough Belinda Carlisle for one lifetime.

Surprised you didn't mention that the vinyl mix is actually slightly different from the final digital release! The differences are mostly subtle--certain songs have longer intros/outros, different guitar takes, and I think the vocals are actually a lot clearer on the vinyl.
That being said this is easily my most replayed album of the 2020s so thank you for making a video on it!! Loved hearing the story behind it even if it's a long series of unfortunate events 😅

@@abigaildevoe Hoo boy! That's a giant question on a giant album. I love it of course. Work of genius. So varied but cohesive. I love how Merritt brought in other singers that fit the tone of various songs or could just hit the notes that he couldn't (Luckiest Guy). There ARE a few songs I don't love but I still appreciate them for breaking up the sound-scape or bringing (even more) humor, like Punkrock Love and Zebra.On reddit, recently somebody asked what band you would choose if you could only pick one for the rest of your life. I would never get sick of The Magnetic Fields. A lot of that is because of 69 Love songs... so much content and so much cleverness and so many moods.
Red planet is a great song! Great band , seen them at Glastonbury 2015
I love how this album is named after Rev, which is what people drink when they dont drink in Canada, especially if you dont like the taste of alcohol. Its like an "entry drug" and its been banned in some places lol.
I saw it at a gas station when I went up to Montreal a few months back. I wish I would’ve got some just to try it once, even if it is nasty. Can’t get it down here in the States.
@RandomNonsense1985 it tastes like spiked Kool Aid. And it's kinda chalky like Kool Aid is too. It's worth a try, but if you're an adult whose had their fair share of whiskey gingers, or rum and cokes, it'll be kinda silly.
also the music video for Many Mirrors was made by ConcernedApe, aka the guy who made Stardew Valley!

Thank you for the excellent, heart-felt review. I was initially put off by the sound of Blue Rev. I didn't hear the hooks that stuck out all over Alvvays and Antisocialites. But over time my opinion changed... drastically. What I originally considered poor production is increasingly what I LOVE about Blue Rev. And seeing them perform in Calgary in March was ecstatic, euphoric, really indescribable. The hooks were there all along, but they were folded into the songs in ways that ended up embedding them more deeply in my consciousness. Now I'm utterly obsessed with this album and this band. And I think you need to listen to Lottery Noises more. (You can't win if you don't play.😉)
i’ve also warmed up to blue rev more since making this video - it grows on you! and yes i’ve changed my mind on lottery noises, it’s one of my favorites now

Comin' Down Again by the Stones was the Igster (James) mood that I knew and believe me, Jimmy was born with puppy-dog eyes.

I picked up the Japanese version of Blue Rev on vinyl at my local record store (almost) totally blind, and tbh, I wasn’t jiving with it at first (I suspect the mix has something to do with it, being less vocal-forward than their previous albums); I think the best approach (or at least the one that works for me) is to listen it as an album experience, and I’ve since really warmed up to me.
I believe, more than anything, that my love for Ants from Up There kind of hinders me from getting the most out of this album though 😆

the us pressing is a totally different mix, except for pharmacist which is very close to the japanese & digital release, the songs have much more vocal clarity & accessibility, although i think the digital version of many mirrors is a bit better for it's wall of sound waved rush & layers of harmonies
That’s a new information for me! I’ve read some reviews on Discogs and apparently they echoed similar sentiments to yours. I might have to consider getting US version too (if I can get them at retail, what with the vinyl market being what it is now).

Good Mod Month! I used tracks Belinda Carlisle Says and Velveteen while at work, but so far can only say they count as serviceable modern-rock numbers. I still don't quite understand, also still don't have a clue what shoegaze even is. Kinda proto-emo type thing? I'm from the damn 90s and never heard of Slodive so that'll be most pedagogical an infoslam lol
I wouldn’t exactly blame you for not knowing what shoegaze is; they’re not exactly the most mainstream genre and are known mostly to online music nerds. Tbh, I’m still mostly warming up to the whole “wall of sound with reverbed out vocals” genre and I’m not sure I fully get the appeal.
shoegaze was very much a british thing. critics back then really only paid attention to the scene for like 2 years, i don’t blame you for missing it during its heyday
@Daniel Mukhlis well and when there's a new subgenre name where the pioneers/precursors are a group I knew of, kinda like at whatever latter-day-ass point they started calling Sepultura "groove metal". I ain't pushing the wiki button, I like when she can present stuff I taywtally daywn't knayw

I love the album, bought the vinyl and the songs are incredible but the sound on vinyl sounds overly compressed and muddled. I thought it was the vinyl pressing. Went on Spotify and Amazon Music and it sounds equally terrible. A shame the sound engineer did a poor job

Alvvays should be as big as U2. I agree w this obnoxious host, Abigail, the mix..is all over the place. Pharmicist sounds better live than the CD version, for instance.
