      Apple just needs to put a decent GPU in their computer to start with. For the amount of people who rely in macOS the price of adding a full fat GPU will not affect the target audience. Apple needs to stop making deals with AMD to deliberately make their GPUs for Macs as bad as possible.

    I've watched a few of your videos, and have now just subscribed. I do a lot of video work (editing, motions graphics, visual effects, and post audio work), and really enjoy your unbiased, in-depth comparisons in hardware when it comes to content creation. In my early years of college, I was using a mac for all of my video work. After a while it was very evident that the Macintosh was not able to keep up with my demands, and the price per performance just wasn't there for me, so I switched to a custom built PC that outperforms almost every Mac that Apple sells; and for a fraction of the cost. Again, I really enjoy your videos, and look forward to your next! Cheers

    Weird.
    My hackintosh says:
    Graphics:

    and in System Report:
    Metal: Supported

    • @snazzy
      @snazzy  7 років тому +7

      You can see at 0:41, my Sys Profiler says the same thing, but it's definitely not working. It's necessary to play around with some kexts when using the RX480 to get Metal support to work. I tried to do something similar with the NVIDIA cards and it didn't work. I wonder if the drivers override it.

      If your machine will boot into Windows with an eGPU, it's not a bad option-driver problems aren't so much of a hassle-however, you'll still get throttled performance. A Ryzen 5 or i5 build wouldn't add much cost and would benefit heaps from additional performance.

    Hey Snazzy. A belated update.. your eGPU series inspired me to upgrade my 2012 Mac Pro. I upgraded the CPUs to dual Xeon 3.46GHz and put a 1080Ti in it. and I must say i am having a hard time believing it's not "close to" the top of the line (real) mac in 2017. Heaven score: 90.2fps (rad!) and 2270. Cinebench Open GL: 60 (meh) CPU score: 1620(bonk!) You should do a video on teaching old macs new tricks. Better than a doorstop which is what a lot of these mac pros have become, and yet... 1620 cinebench / 2270 heaven... nothing to sneeze at. Make a video? PLEAZZZE. #staySnazzy

    Thanks for testing the new 1080 cards on the mac! I know egpu's are still iffy but have you heard of this Bizonbox 3? Its like an external gpu enclosure that's thunderbolt 3 compatible with macs? I wonder if it is any good with the new pascal cards. Review it for us if you get the chance!

    Hi, Snazzy!
    Can a mid-2011 iMac be GPU upgraded?
    I've seen some forums saying that YES, it can... Some say I'd lose the boot screen though.

    Hope you answer this.

    Here is the question, while your results stated that with an rx480 single gpu was only 15% exporting time then OEM-Mac Pro. Which gpus do you have in your Macpro D300, D500 or D700). Cause I do believe that if you were testing with the Dual D700, then for the individuals that has the D300s then it might be worth to consider the rx480 update.

    • @snazzy
      @snazzy  7 років тому

      It was 15% faster. I have the 12-core CPU but still the old D300 GPU. The D700 are really hard to get a hold of, and they're prohibitively expensive. I don't wanna spend $1,200 on a 4-year-old machine that will be replaced next year, but you're right. The D700 would get mighty close to the RX480 in performance (or so I presume).

    • @exam2300
      @exam2300 7 років тому

      I have the 10-core and the CPUs makes a huge difference. When exporting, FCPX does take an advantage of all core and threads, per the CPU readings. Im curious if we you can provide the file you were exporting. I wanna see how my dual RX480 par against your test.

    The reason why 980ti is faster is probably because it has more CUDA cores instead of higher clock.Pascal architecture is highly optimized for gaming but maybe not the case in terms of computing. 980ti is still a super good card for computing. And yes, Mac webdriver from NV is something that works...but not good, no matter which card you throw in your system will be treated as a reference card. Like my 980ti WaterForce, it boosts up to 1.418Ghz on Windows while only 1.16 on Mac, not to mention Metal and Mac is still betaish for gaming and Mac simply doesn't and maybe never will support Direct X and Vulkan.

  • @tipoomaster
    @tipoomaster 7 років тому +1

    Didn't the TB2 Macs with two ports have full speed to both? In theory, couldn't a box use both TB2 ports? Might have to get around fine timing synchronization or something I guess, but if they could do that, TB2 could come around TB3 speed with two ports. Or TB3 itself could use more than one port.

    • @snazzy
      @snazzy  7 років тому

      Theoretically, I suppose that's possible, but practically it's nonexistent. Not for eGPUs. Can only use one TB2 connection from a single bus.

    May I ask about the AMD Radeon Pro Duo (Polaris) 32gb VRAM GPU... Will we need to wait for some kind of drivers or will it work natively with the 2013 Mac Pro as you mentioned the RX480 did? I'm solely interested in using it for video editing on Premiere (no gaming at all) on MacOS... just wondering if this is a killer, bug free option I should wait for knowing full well that it is Thunderbolt 2 limited on the TrashcanPro or will there be minimal difference between this and the RX480 as eGPU's on the 2013 Mac Pro? Thanks so much!!! Nickolas

    is there anyway you can make your timeline(s) for Premiere and FCPX available? I'd like to test my own 2016 MacBook Pro and see where it falls amidst these other cards.

      Really? Thanks! I was pretty disappointed with the weird AF breathing in the a-roll. I also shot a lot of it in 1080p on accident and had to upscale. I gradually keep improving-slowly but surely. LOL. Thanks for watching!

    Currently I have a 980TI in my Mac Pro 4.1 and it uses the full x16 slot, should I wait until the drivers are fully supported to go to a 1080 or should I just not try? I'm mostly video editing and color correcting in Davinci Resolve.

    I don't know if I want to buy a dual x5690 3.46ghz Mac Pro decked out on eBay or build a hackintosh. Hackintosh looks great but I don't want a buggy system that requires maintenance. Hmmm

    So I currently have 1080 on my PC, and I'm planning to do hackintosh to use it for my FCPX. Does the same rule apply? Will RX480 render much faster than 1080?

    Is Nvidia going to release Pascal drivers for El Capitan? The Mac Pro 2006 cannot run Sierra no matter what it seems, but is still a decently powerful machine and runs Pascal perfectly in Windows.

    TFW he doesn't differentiate between PCIE 2.0 or 3.0 when describing TB2; Just to clarify for anyone wondering, PCIE 2.0 x4 (TB2) bottlenecks GPUs, while PCIE 3.0 x4 (TB3) is equivalent to PCIE 2.0 x8, which is pretty much 90% of a 1080TI bandwidth as Snazzy Labs describes.

    Considering that apple has great game support on iOS they should somewhat get into the gaming field, with their optimizations and other offerings it would seem smart.
