The sap in the seeds is to prevent the seeds from rotting at the bottom of a swamp. They grow in swamps and seeds would rot without the sap. The sap is like a natural oily coating that protects the seeds.
I'm guessing Virginia or west Virginia accent. Love your accent. I have some seeds that are almost a year old that I will try to plant. Thank you for sharing your video.
we visited santa cruz and came come with a couple of giant cypress and the seed balls are also the same. we're hoping to figure out about planting them
I've got a bald cypress in the front yard and another in the back. Both about two stories. I think I'll try and drop a fresh pod in some dirted water and see what happens. Maybe crush one and see if that helps.
I don't believe so, if I remember correctly Leyland Cypress is a cross between the Monterey cypress and some form of cedar, and any seeds Leyland's produce are sterile.
Not yet the two pots I put the seeds in I actually set out on the porch because I assume that these seeds probably need cold stratification and since everything I read said they had a better chance sprouting when sowed right then instead of trying to store more seeds in potting mix in the fridge so will see in the Spring if they come up, thanks for watching.

Thank you for watching. Actually the foothills of North Carolina
Here in the West we have Modoc Cypress, a beautiful, hardy tree. The pods look just like yours. Trying to propagate. Thanks.

from what i read the santa cruz ones are dependant on fires to spread in nature idk but its a noggin scratcher for me
Shouldn’t be necessary to cut them open right? In nature they just fall to the ground.

I have some green balls and I wanna know what's the best way to plant them
From the research I did after separating the seeds they need to be sowed soon after I let mine dry to long and none came up
@Brian Carr From everything I have read researching it is best when they are still green sappy not when they have dried out
Did they ever come out?

i guess they need to soak in water for a very long period of time to germinate, due to their native habitat.
sprout or not:?

In Texas these trees just pop up everywhere in swamps lol
