I have not reviewed many Latin American Rums, so why not review the most popular ones that is widely available for purchase.

Another very good review & comparison. I think the Zacapa sells alot more, though it's believed to have added sugar. Diplomatico (Venezuela) vs Dictador (Colombia) is another good comparison too.

Santa teresa is my go to rum (gran reserva) which is a tier down from the 1796 but it is still excellent for most parties and events. I do get the 1796 for more fancy occasions. I actually visited the facility where santa teresa is made a few times and its a beautiful place, very traditional, they really care about the product.

Thank you. They both really evolve over time. The Santa Teresa grew in flavor, the the Ron Zacapa changed from chocolate bitter notes to whiskey forward notes.

I found your review, really enjoyed it. Yes, I tasted the Vaval once, but quite a while ago. More recently I've had a bottle of the Sajous and I currently have the Casimir. They're all incredible, and evolve so much once the bottle has been opened.

Two very good rums in my opinion. The Zacapa is more on the sweet side, toffee and caramel flavors. The Santa Teresa has a more dry and woody flavor. I recommend the Dictador 21 from Colombia as well.

I think people tend to gravitate towards the Zacappa due to thought of it being a 23yr old rum . Great marketing by them I would say. I think the Zacappa XO is better than the 23 and the Teresa. My opinion though.

Not a fan of either rum, but there is a special place reserved in hell for Zacapa for a number of reasons.
    1. They add about 20 grams per litre of sugar, so clearly hiding some god awful harshness (Should it still be called rum with that much sugar added?).
    2. Fooling your average consumer by putting a 23 on the bottle making consumers think it's aged 23years when it's actually solera aged. (I'm a firm believer that the age statement on the bottle should be the youngest rum in the bottle, which is the rule for whisky)
    3. It is massively overpriced. A rum that is quite young with so many additives could easily be sold for $20 a bottle, but just like "premium" vodka, the marketing department have done a fantastic job in brainwashing the consumer into believing this is a premium rum.

I agree with you the taste is decent but nothing all that special. Now the packaging is a whole new story. I wish the rum match up to the packaging. The color is beautiful but it just needs a bigger flavor. I read where it's made to be a dry style and I would say that is accurate but I will pass once mine is empty. The Dos Maderas 5+5 will be better money spent.

When it comes to Zacapa 23-it's definitely not "my cup of tea" due to much sweetness. I prefer rums on the drier profile cause consuming tons of sugar ruins people's health and sugar is more dangereos for health than drinks of spirits (by measure of course)
