- This is the first in a videos series on the topic of improvisation. The tips and concepts outlined in this video are useful for all musicians.
George Urbaszek of www.creativebasslessons.com demonstrates - in incremental steps - how you can easily develop the skills required for improvising.
The very simple, yet useful backing track is from Band-in-a-Box at

This is great advice! Never assume that just because you instrument isn't a vocal effort that learning music shouldn't be. Even while practicing intervals or scales just humming out loud or dictating the notes you are playing can really help you comprehend your actions and put them in context. Great video as always.
Fantastic lesson as always. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for checking in and for your kind comment.
really good. going to be walking around all day tommorow calling and responding

Great - I hope you're still doing it :)
Kind regards,
George
In the background I see a bass guitar connected to a stand. What is that stand called? I would like to get one to mount my bass when I'm stading up.
Hello Craig
This is the Gracie Performer Stand. When I use this stand on a gig it makes me play and move differently, more loosely. So its definitely worth a try.
Kind regards,
George
I understand the concept in that you need to start somewhere and work your way through, either through sampling, rhythm tracks, etc.. but when you say "Nothing comes from nothing", could you explain how it relates to the concept?
+Dennis Tudor Hello Dennis. That's a great question ... and I explain and elaborate in the next few videos in this Improvisation series.
Essentially, what I mean is that our first idea is based on something we have already heard - and therefore draw upon - whether it is from the past, or more ideally, from the musical moment, i.e. something that has happened/is happening in the music we are playing at the time of our improvisation.
You will see/hear throughout this Improvisation series that I often respond to what is happening in the backing track.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
George
