People don't realise North Korea's women's teams are really good but their players don't get to play abroad and only surface during major tournament. Their senior women's team nearly qualified for the recent Olympics narrowly losing to Japan
So does this prove how good North Korea's women's team is or how awful the standard of women's football is that even North Korea is considered formidable?
@@adlilzafri2322 you realise that north koreans mens team is also very competitive in asia.... like a team being good at football is in no way an indictment of 50% of sports competitors because of their gender... unless england losing to iceland means mens football is also terrible because england lost to a team from a population of 300,000 people
Choe Il-son is probably actually eighteen and using the Korean birthdate system (although potentially yes she could just be older). I don't think it's that much of a surprise, they've been either the best or second-best youth women's team in Asia for decades (first behind China and now Japan). Their development system is allegedly very good - if you have a skill in something the government absolutely hones in on it; the national team also trains together constantly which is an advantage.
They're doing something right with development which isn't always the case in places where there's a lot of corruption. China's mens team is a great example, when the government tried to invest in the program they went from a decent 40s and 50s ranked nation to below 90th at one point. That aside when a nation doesn't see human life as important on any level and is as isolated as North Korea is all I can do is hope for the best for the players. When you can take 10 people and give them any ped and treat them however you want you might create 1 excellent player, or even an excellent team. You might also have to bury the ones who couldn't handle the high doses of peds you forced them to take, and the ones who couldn't handle the training conditions. Not saying that's happening just that we don't know what's going behind the scenes so it makes it difficult to celebrate their achievements on any level for me.
North Korea has won the U20 WWC THREE times, tied most all time. This isn't that much of a surprise. They were a favorite going in. Also, PRK women's team has won multiple EAFF Cups, Asian Cups, and Asian Games. They're a traditional women's power.
@stalesaltine I did, it still bears mentioning. It's also why I added their other accolades. He's acting like DPRK isn't a top team in the women's game when they are. They're no USA or Japan, but still towards the top of the mountain.
@@NUFCOfficial Not really. South Korea and Japan are way better. In the WC qualifiers North Korea is not doing very well currently. Although they only played 2 games so far. They aren't awful for being a country disconnected from the rest of the world. But nowhere near as good as the women team.
All DPRK players will be listed as having been born on Jan 1. South Korea did this until relatively recently as well. And Americans have not been allowed to go to the DPRK (by American law, not DPRK law) since the tail end of the Trump administration, and anyone looking to get a work visa in the U.S. is unlikely to do so if they have visited the DPRK, so the u20s will absolutely never have been scouted because it’s been illegal for Americans to do so since they were at least u16s. And while North Koreans would likely be able and willing to play in China, and Japan, foreign player limits prevent them from doing so on a large scale at a level high enough to justify leaving home. Then of course because the DPRK and RoK are technically still at war (it’s just been paused since 1953), it’s hard for North Koreans to play in the K-league and live comfortably without harassment from RoK authorities. It’s sad because the DPRK loves football. When they had access to trade goods from the Soviet Union they were able to build the world’s largest football ground in Pyongyang (114,000 seats), but since the privatization of the Russian economy in the 1990s killed their trade relationship, and since western sanctions and immigration procedures have prevented them from trading with anyone else, they have been unable to focus much on sporting culture for much of the last 40 years. They are finally back on their feet again after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and are repairing their relationship with China after it soured in the 70s, so barring a regional political disaster (i.e. war) expect to see them make significant sporting progress in the next few cycles.
North Korea probably invests a lot into the women's team since they don't have to worry about the marketing differences. Also they are U20. You should watch "We Went to North Korea to get a Haircut", Zealandism. It will give you a new view about the country.
