    Just replayed this game for the 100th time a few weeks ago. Still a fun game to play. And yes, use a walk-through for that Goliath maze. It's an absolute must. I wish you showed the scene where Roger touches the escape pod and burns his hand. I always find that hilarious to do it multiple times.

    The story for this one was top notch. You fall in love with the entire crew of the Eureka by the end, and like any good story the seemingly nonsignificant early elements like Cliffy's hacks on the transporter come back as Chekov's guns several times to become part of the final solution by the ending. Moreover, the puzzles in this one are actually logical and fair (not like SOME point and click classics where it's almost impossible to figure out which crazy joke out of dozens of items the creators wanted you to use next). The planets and scenarios you visit also have their distinct and memorable feel. I also like how Roger is depicted here as a hair-brained, but handsome and resourceful guy who constantly manages to overcome bad situation and his own lack of intelligence through a mix of charisma, cunning and luck.

    These games are widely available on GOG or Steam and cheap - not terribly difficult to play on modern PC. However, if you buy an official copy it's going to come with DOSbox, a DOS emulator that lets you play DOS games on modern computer. While DOSbox is pretty feckin' great in it's own right, the *better* way to play these games is going to be on the SCUMMVM player. Similar to DOS but gives you some more flexibility and performs better, especially with a lot of these Sierra games. Not too difficult to get the proper Roland sound emulation either. Here's a link for more info on SCUMMVM -- www.scummvm.org/ (I'm not affiliated with them in any way).. So go buy the official games and then use SCUMMVM to play 'em. Enjoy!

    Space Quest was one of my all time favorite series of games. I ever played this one however. These games has the craziest, zaniest sense of humor ever! Edit: Nice Beverly Hills Cop reference there! Back when Eddie Murphy was funny.

      Its a good one for sure. Little disappointing they didn't have narration in it, but apart from that, it's hilarious and so much fun

    I just discovered this channel and subscribed! These videos are pure gold, and these old games had SOUL! I think one of the things that made these games so indelible in our hearts, was the limitation of the technology. Because not every exacting detail was laid out before us, our imagination filled in the blanks, or wove deeper stories, based on the kernels that were handed to us. It also helps that the more primitive graphics and sound had a charming quality that’s absent in modern games. Let the binge-watching commence! 🖖😀

    Sierra games were most of my computer gaming growing up. Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Quest for Glory were all amazing.

    This was my favorite PC game when it first came out. I loved Sierra's adventure games, in general. The labyrinth at the end was so unnerving that I was forced to call the 900-number listed on the booklet just to make it through. Other than that, and the other flaws you mentioned, this was a cool game. I'd love to see a modern update of this franchise. Like, maybe a game with Mass Effect-level quality, but done in the same spirit as these Space Quest games.

    I had recently finished watching your other SQ reviews and was ready for another one, and here you are. Haven't really played this or the next one though I do have the SQ Collection so I really have no excuse. Still hoping that one day Two Guys' SpaceVenture will be finished as well for a brand new entry of sorts.

    Personally this is my favorite game in the series. Probably because this is the first SQ gameI discovered myself instead of getting it from a friend or playing it first at someone else's house. Funny how that works. ;) An excellent review for sure.

    I see an andorian behind "Worf" in the classroom; And I think I see Picard and Janeway in the conference room.

      Actually 'Picard' does make an appearance. On the planet Klorox II, When Roger is attacked in the green house by a mutant. After Droole shoots the mutant, it reverses his mutation and the man is a dead ringer for Patrick Stewart.

    Never played any of these when I was a kid, but liked the Dr. Brain series from Sierra and Monkey Island from Lucasarts that used the same style of play. If you haven't yet, check out the dungeon crawler Yserbius and it's sequel by Sierra, although the online MMO via Sierra Online is long gone of course.

    Just searching your channel for more Space Quest now! Never played one of these games but I do remember seeing them in the shops at the time. Might have to pay a visit to GOG after scanning through your vids.
    It was nice to see this game from the video and see what it was all about. Always wondered back in the day.
    Also watched the Atari 2600 games videos. Nostalgia factor 10 :)
    Thanks for the video. Loving the channel.

    what music not as good? maybe so, but I bought an expensive Gravis Ultrasound to get the best midi tunes for this, Doom and a few others. That particular part when Wilco is done mopping the floor and Wankmeister shows her face, that sounds incredible with the 'GUS'. This purple beast ate an entire free expansion card slot length-wise. Great nostalgia review, man.

    It wasn't until UA-cam that I found out there was a voiced version of SQ4. Not my bag, no voice acting is a much better fit for Space Quest. I frickin love this game, having my own spaceship was my dream as a kid, I didn't care it was a giant vacuum!!

    Space Quest V is my favourite of the bunch, Kind of ironic as it's the first one not made by Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy. But I adored the game. I think being a huge Star Trek fan helped alot. Still, The art style and sound effects were just so charming I found. All hand drawn. But most of all. It actually had a really good and compelling story which is odd for a comedy game. I think this is the one that exuded the most charm. Just my own humble opinion

    I love me some Space Quest, probably my favorite Sierra series (I even have a Roger Wilco t-shirt). If you haven't, you should try Space Quest: Incinerations. It's a fan made game, but DAMN Is it excellent. Normally I don't care for fan made stuff, as it almost never feels "right", but they absolutely nailed this one.

    just wanted to mention the SQ collection on GOG.com runs better but still does not have the vga remake of SQ1 available, the Steam collection is the digital version of the last physical SQ collection activision released in 2006 and I always had problems playing multiple titles in that version to the point on a few entries were playable but it does have the vga remake of SQ1 included unlike the GOG version

  • @sierrakobold6896
    @sierrakobold6896 5 років тому

    this was one of my favorites in the series after 3 due in a big part you again had your own ship and navigated throughout the galaxy. An odd little fact is of the 3 games of the series to be rated by the ESRB being 4-6, this is the only entry rated T and I've never understood how this was rated T yet SQ6 was rated KA like 4, though I don't understand why this game is rated T to begin with. SQ3 and SQ1 remake are much more violent but they didn't rerate the first 3 games including vga remake for the collections that came out like people think. So the reason all the SQ collections are rated T is because of just SQ5 bearing that rating

    I remember being pretty disappointed with this one back in the day. Most of the humor was reference-based, and it had a lot fewer good jokes when you looked around and clicked on things. You can really tell that Murphy was the one who did most of the jokes in the previous games. I mean, it may be just as well that they didn't bother with a talkie version - most of the narration is so dry that even Gary Owens wouldn't have made it much funnier.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  5 років тому

      That's very true. This seems "more serious" than the previous entries and it's clear a lot of the more over the top zany stuff came from Scott Murphy in the earlier games.

    The rose colored glasses are hiding something though. You were playing the version of SpaceQuest 3 music with what sounds like a Roland or some other really nice sound card. Most of us were making do with an AdLib or worse a PC speaker back in those days. It really makes a difference.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  4 роки тому

      For the purposes of the video I used Roland emulation, but my original SQ3 experience was with the built in Tandy speaker .... and at the time I thought it was friggin' awesome lol. Still do.

    • @rayceeya8659
      @rayceeya8659 4 роки тому

      @@FridayNightArcade LOL, called it. Kids today have no idea how rough gaming was in the 16bit PC days. So many brands and so many clones. Never had a Tandy myself. My first PC was a PC clone with a 486 SX running at 33Mhz, with two MB of RAM. No sound card, but it did have both a 3.5" and 5.25" drive. With some clever boot disk work, I did get Microsoft Flight Simulator 5.0 to run.

    • @rayceeya8659
      @rayceeya8659 4 роки тому

      @drealmerz7 z 4856 SX33 here. No sound card 2MB RAM, and a 250MB HD. A little better, but not much. I upgraded it later with a cheap SoundBlaster clone and another 2MB of RAM. The RAM was the expensive part. $200 in 1994.

    This is a good review but it has HUGE SPOILERS for at least 3 of the puzzles. Please, add a warning to the title.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  5 років тому

      Thank you for the feedback. I'm always somewhat deliberate as to how and where I reveal a puzzle for a game like this, at least in my more recent videos. If I reveal no puzzles at all, I have nothing to talk about. There has to at least be some frame of reference for someone who has never played the game before so they can understand what it's all about and how the mindset behind the game's puzzles "work." If I just say, "this game has some puzzles" and show nothing, that could confuse someone who has never even seen a text adventure game.
      Also the game is 26 years old.
