"They" is plural so this is incorrect on so many levels.
I have nothing to say about whether what JLo's child is right or wrong. But your statement is incorrect. They can also refer to an unknown or unspecified gender, e.g. "Ask your friend if they can help" or "An employee with a grievance can file a complaint if they need to".
