    For all he was obviously terrified, he's a feisty little chap, bless him. Thank you for saving him and finding him a playmate in Morris. He already seems to have come out of his shell, and will hopefully have a long, happy and safe life ahead of him. Bless you all. 🙏🐾🐻💕

    Im interested to know why these bears cant be released Are there poachers that kill the mothers for the cubs or is the land they live is used for farming

    • @FreetheBears
      @FreetheBears  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for the question. You are correct, loss of (safe) habitat is a major issue, but there are also other factors. There is nothing we would rather see than all wildlife living free & safe in the wild. Sadly, this can't always be so. The hundreds of rescued sun bears & moon bears in our care are rescued from the illegal wildlife trade or bear bile farms, where they were kept in tiny cages and abused daily, starved and mutilated to extract bile. Many die a painful and horrible early death. We 'free the bears' from suffering in these cages and bring them to the sanctuary for rehabilitation. Sun bears and moon bears are both endangered species, every life could be important to the survival of the species.
      Most of the bears we rescue were orphaned as cubs after poachers killed their mothers. They didn't learn survival skills from their mothers. Some have debilitating injuries or have been exposed to pathogens. For others, after years in a cage, they have come to rely on humans and no longer fear us the way a wild animal should, reducing chances of survival in the wild due to human-bear conflicts. There is also a lack of suitable protected forest safe for release. Most do not make suitable release candidates and we'll likely need to care for them for life (although we have commenced initiatives to look into future releases of appropriate candidates into suitable safe and protected forests. Potential bear candidates need to be cared for in a totally different manner, using different facilities with little to no human contact and special monitoring, which requires a large investment of, both financially and of resources, which isn’t always easy for a small nonprofit charity).
      We always put the welfare of the bears first. For the bears that cannot be released, we try to give them the best possible life with large habitats containing caves, hammocks, climbing platforms & pools, lovely bear houses with hammocks where the bears feel safe, healthy diets, expert vet care & daily puzzles & treats to stimulate their complex minds and allow them to engage in natural behaviours. The bears are closely monitored for any injuries, illness or signs of stress and have places they can go to avoid seeing any humans at the sanctuaries within national parks where the public have access.
