Homeowner: "How do the pipes look?"
Plumber: [Returns from truck with pickax and hatchet.]
Homeowner: "Never mind."
Didn't expect that I would watch a movie-length video about blocked drains 11pm at night.
"We apologise for harming the tree if we harmed the tree, but it harmed us first so now it's the trees turn" 😂
When your plumber pulls out a pickaxe and maintenance guy tells you your foundations toast. That's not a good day.
Ah, i see. You uploaded an entire movie of unblocking a drain. Somehow i have no correlation to any of this, however i will still continue to watch the full 2 hours and 7 minutes while laying in bed after surgery. And i will for sure lighten up anytime you have any kind of interaction with Ratty. It is just so adorable to see whenever you interact with good old Ratty
You're comment I'm just now reading is 6 days ago.....I hope you're feeling better!! Yes, Ratty cheers up a lot of ppl!! Feel better buddy 👍🏻🐀
1--Cut the tree down
2--Get a backhoe and cut a new trench
3--Lay a new pipe to the downspouts
4--Cover the trench and reseed the lawn.
Yea.... I can't imagine how doing this was more efficient than just ripping it all out and replacing it.
Every Kid Ever: I'm going to play in the mud.
Every Parent Ever: No
Ollie: I'm going to play in the mud...and you're going to pay me.
Customer: Ok
Ollie: "There's hardly any dirt, mainly roots."
Also Ollie: Proceeds to spray dirt absolutely everywhere.
I think the reason for the vac was to keep the water out of the soil. The house was having settling issues because of poor drainage so the engineer wanted to reduce the amount of hydraulic action on the soil as much as he could.
@@hoobaguyyeah, that cracked foundation running up the wall is a scary sight.
Ivan: half engineer, half biology teacher, all water sucking maniac
absolutely, two mad geniuses coming together to make the ultimate video
5 minutes in and this is already an all timer. Size of those roots man! Reckon you had this one saved up for 500. Cheers
"Blocked Drain: The Prequel" Opening scene: "Honey. let's plant a tree right next to this pipe..."
Trees cannot "bore through" drainage pipes, especially 100mm sewer pipe that was used here. There needs to be a break and water leakage in order for roots to enter. Furthermore, the roots travel a long way, so whether a tree is right next to a broken pipe, or 10 meters away makes little difference - the roots will find a way to get moisture.
@@johncoops6897 Technically you are right. Thin end roots won't worm their way through the solid wall of a pipe
However....
Roots will grow around any solid object in the soil, then as the roots thicken with age, they squeeze that object. If it is a pipe, that pipe can be flattened/crushed. It might even crack, and then the roots will get inside the pipe too.
If the roots are near an imperfect join (like between plastic and concrete, or a non-glued/pressure fitted join) or near the end of a pipe, they can and will get in through a hairline gap... and then clog the pipe, force the gap wider....
@@samuelmellars7855 - I guess that roots might apply pressure and crush a pipe as they grow, however that's an incredibly rare way for them to enter pipes.
As for imperfect joints, leaky joins between concreteplastic and hairline gaps... yes, that's the whole point. You cannot have ANY of those things in an underground pipe run. And it doesn't matter how far away... the trees will find that pipe!
Roots will radiate OUT from the base of the tree and find any moisture source within a surprising distance. In fact, the fine "water absorbing" root tips tend to be most prevalent well outside the drip line (leaf canopy) since more rainfall reaches the earth. So in many ways, putting your leaky pipe a fair distance away from a tree will make the chances of root ingress much higher!
One comment for Tim Anderson... I live in Sydney (like Ollie and Ratty) and we have a very dry climate. It can sometimes be years between rainfall, and my son (born 2004) was almost 6 years old before he ever saw rain! The soil here is BONE dry most of the time.
Yet we pride ourselves in the bushland environment we live within, and there are trees absolutely everywhere. The native trees are highly adapted to the low moisture levels and have massive and evasive root structures (they actually die if they get too much rainfall LOL)
We must built WITHIN the trees, and the planning doesn't allow clearing of land so we don't have the completely "tree-free" suburbs that we see in some parts of the USA. There are strict penalties for cutting down trees, and it's incredibly difficult to get permission to remove them, even if they are non-native or if they are dangerous. They even use Google Satellite View to find tree-cutters!
So that means that in Sydney, like in other places, we have to live with the trees and plumb our drains accordingly. The Drain Addict channel shows what happens if the drains are leaky, rather than any inherent "danger" of trees. In dry environments the quality of the drainage pipes is even more critical - consider that tree roots in England don't need to seek out moisture since it's always raining and there's plenty of moisture in the soil.
Amazing patience showed here. In my opinion this is an excavation job (replacement), not a drain cleaning
You could tell he was thinking he was wasting his time with "trees are lovely creatures" 😆
Loving the teamwork, the using of each others strengths, and absorbing knowledge from each other as you go. Really intersting and I learned a lot, thank you
Holy crap 2 hours, I’m gonna have to stock up on the pop corn before I watch this bad boy!!
Congratulations on the 500 Ollie!
Yayyy! Cheers to 500! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better you put out a whole DA movie.
Roots The movie! Starring Ratty, Ollie and Ivan. Congrats on 500 episodes. (Almost 300k subs too!)
On each part at the begining there are people in trouble (other plumers, workers etc) saying 'hi Ollie'. Its like everyone knows him and they all know that eagle has landed and everything will be OK from now. This kind of respect takes years and years of hard work to earn it.
Those roots getting smoothly pulled out with the winch was so satisfying.
Every time you wipe off the camera I say "Thank YOU!" In the voice of Ratty :-)
Congrats Ollie on this amazing milestone 500 blocked drains unblocked. Starting the channel you would've just thought it could be a fun hobby but now your like wow look how far I've come. Another great vid keep up the great work.
I remember an answer when he writes "I thought some 20 or 30 people might be interested" 🤣. I'm sure he sometimes scratches his head, I'm sure it gives him motivation and he doesn't mind getting many 👍 for hist had work from all over the world. But I am ABSOLUTELY SURE he never thought what it would take to keep It alive. Quoting him again: "it's turned into a second full-time-job". I hope he keeps the balance!
How oddly satisfying it is to see that massive clump of root get pulled from the pipe all in one piece... Cheers from the US Ollie!
So I just found this channel, and after watching 798 and 797, this epic popped up and it did not disappoint! Thanks for sharing your work with us. Cheers!
don't know why but I really enjoy your vids. It took about 6 to realize the bird was added in every time you tell a joke. I was convinced coocies followed you around.
Thank you, it took me ages to realise too. Actually, feeling sorry for the Australians having that annoying bird around all the time. 🙈🙈🇸🇯
You gotta admit, this guy has it pretty sweet. He’s making money while making money 🤙🏽
Ah yes Blocked Drain: A Movie :)
@@annasbadman The second Longest Video here is #488 at just under 1 hour long
EDIT: I was Wrong!! #488 is not the Second Longest Video on the Drain Addict Channel! That Title belongs to Video #369, at approximately 1 and a half hours long!
Ivan is my new favorite co-star! Knows what he's doing and good sense of humor
Congratulations Ollie and Ratty on 500 episodes!! What a fantastic achievement and such an enjoyable channel to watch. Fantastic episode with you and Ivan working so professionally together. All the best for the future and wish you continued success.
“Na-haha, that’s not a root, THAT’S a root” (from me who only knows aussies from Ollie and Paul Hogan)
Always wondered what the "square root" of a down pipe was, now I know
ratty "do you want some popcorn?" the movie is getting interesting. This movie has everything double barrel, roots and lots of them, root pulling winch, vacuum. adn of course Ollie.. I need some more popcorn. not one but 2 fine specimens
@@DrainAddict Hey Ollie, I bet you were rooted after that long job, and no Popcorn for poor Ratty, just "root abuse"! 🍿🌽😂(Kookaburra laughs in the distance, or falls off the Gum tree branch!).
G'day from Kingsford 2032! 🦘🇦🇺👍
The roots are strong with this one. I like your left orange glove, you wore it down to an orange rubber band 👍👍
Anytime you got to deal with roots while digging, a reciprocating saw is your best friend. Love Your Channel!!!
Thanks for the 500 episodes so far Ollie, you are a legend and have the best channel 👌🏼
2 hours of dirty, dirty drain action!? Aww yeah! Eat your heart out, Hollywood!
Happy 500, Ollie! And almost to 300k subs! Early congratulations for that, m8!
First thing I said to my wife as I saw the length of this video was " Im gonna be late for dinner" lol
Next time on Drain Addict: Ollie now got a winch in his car😏
What an epic episode, Ollie! Congrats on reaching 300k subscribers and the 500th drain successfully unblocked! Hope there's more to come!
Rainy day here in Switzerland, perfect to re-watch the centennials. And they are epic! Now it was fun following you guys through the struggle and seeing these impressive roots and it sure reminded every home-owner among us to never let it get this far. BUT, as many others commented: Was it really worth it? The time and effort Ivan had already put into those 4 or 5 holes, the time you spent together ... someone as handy with a little excavator as you are with jetter entering the scene might have been quicker and a more reliable fix, no? But THANKS A LOT for the effort and also for filming and posting 👍💪😅!
Sadly, I don't have time now, but I'm overjoyed that I get to look forward to only the 2nd movie length blocked drain🤗
500th episode of how to wrangle roots with a Winch, Hollywood dream on 🍻.
Best wishes for the next 500 videos Ollie.
Thanks for sharing.
a complicated drain system gone too long without care. Your hard work gave me a lot of good information on my own drains. thanks.
they sell lots of different kinds of 12 volt winches, can run it right from the battery on your van. a lot of atv's have them mounted right on the front. mine has a key chain remote
Sweet. I’ll let my wife know I picked something for us to watch on our Friday movie night. She’ll be pleased.
Congratulations Ollie and Ratty. Best wishes from Poland. I recon this movie should be on Netflix!
I can't believe I have now watched 500 videos on UA-cam of an Aussie clearing drains, yet here we are. Cheers for the achievement and I look forward to 500 more!
Thanks for giving us an AWESOME 500th episode Ollie!!! I enjoyed every minute of it! 🥳 Congrats on the 500th video!!! 🥳
Hope to see many many maaaany more in the future!!
Thanks for all the hours of fun we have had from nr 1 to 500, you are the BEST
I so enjoyed this. Those roots reminded me of the horror flick tremors. 👍 good job Ollie. So happy Ratty got mud baths without the smell. Also impressed me a clean yard. Someone who cares where they live. 🌞
Congrats on number 500 here’s to the next 500! I wonder how long these pipes have been blocked looks like quite awhile with the size of the roots! Another great job!
Ollie and Ivan working under a tree.
D.I.G.G.I.N.G.
When Professionals are at their wits end, they call the Drain Addict. And damn, Olli, have you become a master of your craft!
now you'll have to have a live event and maybe get a sponsor to bring NYDrains to Australia or the other way around because they give you a lot of shoutouts and give Ratty a lot of corn. I'm sure people have a lot of questions about you and your business. I personally would love to see a live event. Very popular with yourtubers here in the States.
Roots hate him, see how this man unclogs drains with one simple trick.
It’s why UA-cam is so cool. I once saw a bloke vacuuming his lawn, but I have never seen someone vacuuming the road. A job well done my good sir.
Look harder and you’ll find someone using a giant vacuum to suck up horse manure!
An epic Root Extravaganza for the 500th episode!! Rattie was pretty quiet in this video, probably suffering from PTSD due to his fall into the sewer and boundary trap swim in the last episode! Great work Ollie!!
Congratulation Ollie and Ratty on episode 500!!! I can't wait for the next 500!
Glad you & Ivan found the root of the stormwater drainage problem... great work & congrats! 👍
That was the biggest fight I’ve ever seen. Way better than a blockbuster movie.
"Hardly any dirt" Proceeds to spray dirt and mud everywhere. Love it!
The 500 special, i have been waiting for this!!! Congrats
CONGRATULATIONS ON THE 500th DRAIN VIDEO HELL YEAH MAN OVER 2 hours long 🤟🏻🤟🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Ollie, you will have to keep us posted on updates from this job. I'm curious what Ivan finds out when they dig up that one section at the end.
i felt like watching Laurell and Hardy show for two hours !!!! we can call Ivan the winch-man or the wet-vac man !! it is so funny when he runs for that winch every time or do the wet-vac every time. i can imagine how many times Ollie controlled hiding his laugh. did someone say it is the 500th episode ? oh my god, i mentioned to Ollie i watched all his videos....i am watching them for the past 3 weeks, non-stop !!! but now i realize i did not even scratch the surface !!! 500 videos one year back !!!!!!! i don't know when i am going to finish watching all 500 plush videos.....but i will, one day !!! sorry Ollie, i did not watch all your videos as i mentioned two days back; i never thought it is over 500 videos !!!!! well , i will continue to watch all the videos !!! this is how i send my respect to you and for what you do !!!
I can't wait to get home after work and enjoy this from start to finish. Didn't expect "Drain Addict: The Movie" to be the 500th episode. 😁
Keep up the good work!
nothing like watching a guy vaccum the road :P that made me laugh lol
Congratulations Ollie on your 500th episode. Thank you for putting in all the time and effort for making these awesome videos for us to watch. This 2 hour video is perfect and something a lot of us have been dying for. Up next a Q&A session with Ollie and ratty. Seen people including myself have mentioned it before. Once again congrats 👍 from 🇨🇦
I love the back of your van, a place for everything and everything in its place - all in that big heap at the side 😂😂😂
this is THE most epic blocked drain battle in history - had your work cut out for you on this one Ollie!!!!
When you stop doing everything to sit down and watch Ollie 😂🤣 other half was like you okay babe you just literally stopped and sat down me oh yeah Ollie and ratty uploaded My other half oh okay enjoy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Congrats on 500 videos Oliver. Keep the corn, poop, piss, roots and all that mess a coming. Thank you for the satisfying entertainment and drain education. An extra long video to mark the occasion.
Much love from Aberta Canada
Epic 500th episode! Ivan the Builder introduced us to winching, befriending Ratty and becoming a Drain Addict apprentice.
Congrats on hitting 500, and nearly 300K subs!
I was thinking "You're gonna run out of clean places to wipe the camera by the end of this one, mate!"
And i thought I had a bad day at work :D Congratulation for your 500th outstanding video. Never stop posting them, we just can't get enough :)
It looks like when the drains were put in, the person flattened the ends of the pipe to fit into the curb drain slot. That then created a situation where there was always water sitting in the drain pipes and a prime water location for the tree. All of that has led to the home owner having a very expensive problem.
That's the way they (almost always) do it in Australia, it's not the smartest move but it looks neat, it's only rectangular at the opening, the pipe behind is round.
He might be the most helpful customer out of them all. Real champ!
Watch special 500 In Mobile Phone : Nope
Watch Special 500 In PC : Nope

Found my new favorite UA-cam channel! Love all your videos Ollie 😁
OMG!!! The Drain Addict movie? Live and no interruptions. This is just awesome. Thanks as the popcorn is just about ready.LOL
Ollie, this is like us getting to spend a whole afternoon with you and Ratty. 😍 Oh and Ivan.
I can only see one explanation for that lance not chopping through the roots so quickly - that propeerty has soft water.
@@cjadventures8840 It's not hard water 🤣
I think one contains more calcium (causes scale) than the other (don't quote me)
@@cjadventures8840 Hard Water refers to water with a lot of dissolved calcium, magnesium or other salts that react with soap to form an insoluble precipitate. This causes soap scum, and scale even when not mixed with soap.
This guy is like the Post 10 in America.
He is very entertaining with his rubber croc .and mini rat which brings humor to his page
"Eh mate, here's some corn"!

Lol..one more note...I love the orange rubber bracelet you have on at the end 😂 I vote for orange bracelets that have Ratty and Drain Addict on them ..NEW MERCH..? Yes please 💩
TWO HOURS!! This one must have been a true monster to deal with.
Happy 500!!! Got the family gathered round for this milestone 🐀🎉
2 hours of quality drain clearing. Perfect way to end the day
Congrats Ollie, 500 videos, always interesting. Loads of joke puns in this one, don't know if it intended. UK watcher.
Congrats on the +500 videos Ollie!!!! and thanks for all the entertainment over the years... take care
That's some old school rigging, 16th century old school:
Some riggers began to attach stays by splicing or seizing only a small loop into the end of the stay then passing the rope's tail around the mast and back through the small loop, like a slip-knot. To prevent this from slipping tightly around the mast when in use, a strong bulge was built into the standing part of the rope that could not fit through the small loop. This bulge was called a mouse or stay mouse.
In modern rigging a mouse is for shackles, you'd put a zip-tie or locking wire through the eye of the shackle pin and around the shackle body in such a way to prevent rotation of the shackle pin.
I gotta feeling that it would of been easier to just yank the entire line. But where would the fun be in that?
Congrats on 500 cheers to another 500!
halfway there drain addict, on the way to 1000 drains cleared haha
Oh ollie probably already has well over 1000 drains under his belt. But hes half way to a 1000 recorded lol
i love your videos my son and i watch them together when you post. I love ratty too. I am glad we do not have a root problem. But wished you was in the US so i could hire you.
There should be a horror movie, “when roots attack!”
In Korea, yesterday was a holiday, so I am on vacation now. Thank you for watching the hard work hard.
Ollie and Ratty have come through with a special event for #500! Fans are appreciative.
That is absolutely wild. The whole line is loaded!!!
I congratulate on the 500th video. It's fun to watch colleagues who know what they are doing and have a plan .. Olli, all the best .. and stay safe .. Remember, Beriln ist watching you.. ...Oh, the 2 hours were almost too long for me ,,, but spread over 2 days it was okay.
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
I had to wait for a day off to watch this..
Well worth the wait! Holy crap those roots were monstrous.
Next on Drain Addict: Can tree roots destroy your house? Yes, they absolutely can. Here's Ollie, Ratty and Ivan to show you how in this 2 hour, 500th episode special! Allllll Good!
Watch BBC 1 to find out
Of course they can! We had to cut down a huge pine tree that was slowly pushing against and damaging the foundation of my parents’ house with its roots. The previous owner had the great idea of planting it like 2 meters from the house.
Who will win ollie, ratty and ivan or tree roots find out next time on dragon ball Z
Excellent comment!!
