  • Rarely do I relate to a piece of digital media when it comes to my journey leaving the opera business behind. I retired from the stage for many different reasons, emotional, mental, physical abuse, watching my colleagues suffer, anxiety, depression… the opera industry is brutal and the expectations for perfection are profoundly terrible and painful. There is beauty in it though, of course. But it’s harder to find than it should be. This story quest was deeply moving for me and I related to it more than I could have possibly imagined.

    I think Paimon’s rudeness is sort of a reflection of how after 500 years of playing the part of a haughty goddess no one, including Furina herself, really knows how to treat her as a person separate from her role.
    Paimon sort of leads with attempts to engage that previously shown attitude Furina as Focalors had with her quips and jabs. In her mind she probably thinks that Furina was at her happiest when she was in that persona since she doesn’t know any better until Furina reinforces how she felt about it. After all, Paimon didn’t witness Furina’s mindscape like the MC did.
    As for Traveller’s actions, I think maybe he genuinely thought Furina could benefit from engaging with something familiar but with drastically lower stakes.

      Good take also after all this the old rude furina being just a facade maybe there's more reasons for Paimon rudeness.
      She obviously not human, maybe it's harder for her to have empathy?
      I really hopes there's some deep reason for this, maybe she will learn being better with our travels. I noticed she is not that money hungry as she was before fontaine.

      @MarcoMeatball To add onto this observation, Neuvillette specifically mentions how happy Furina looks being involved with the troupe, implying that her desire to be involved hasn't died as much as she claims it to have.
      Unlike the examples you give of yourself and others who quit the performing arts, Furina still has a passion for what she's doing that outweighs the misery she had experienced.

      Yes! I agree with you a lot. Furina was quite rude to them the past months! And Paimon was just trying to match Furina’s old Grandiose and Bold personality. They haven’t seen her weeks and she doesn’t know the detail of Furina’s mind.
      I love Furina this quest was nice, but not as good as the other character quests in Fontaine m. but the ending was amazing and I love that Furina stepped out of her comfort zone and tried to find a new meaning for her new human life.

      Though, it is also true that, after Nahida's Story Quest 2 (the one with the fungi and Apep), it was proven that Paimon has a very hard time seeing beyond appearances; and it's also true that the Traveler's relationship with her was always in the antagonistic side

    I think the reason many characters want Furina to return to the stage is to some extent, those close enough to her (like Neuvillette) realize that one of the few things Furina truly enjoyed was the theater itself. Obviously she had huge misgivings as she was forced to pretend to be an Archon for 500 years, but as this quest explores, she did love the art itself and a big part of her had a legitimate passion for it that hadn't died despite everything.

    What I love the most is the irony here.
    Furina got her vision with a role where Clio the oceanid realizes that she can save the town and her lover _because she is an oceanid, not a human._
    If you think about it, the whole reason for Furina's 500 years of suffering, was that oceanids wanted to be human instead of remaining as they were: no original sin, no punishment to avoid, no lie to keep.
    It wouldn't surprise me if she is a mirror to Foçalors in that sense too: one desires to be human, the other would have preferred to have a happier life as an oceanid instead. The vision reflects that too, with what kind of powers she has.

    I resonated so much with this quest. After 500 years, she lost her sole purpose in life, to the point where she hid away and refused to engage in her strongest passion. We reached out in the beginning, and despite the flat no, she almost immediately took the steps herself to try and re-engage on her own terms and find her happiness in what she loved.
    A lot of people have interpreted this as 'guilt tripping' and 'gaslighting', but as someone who's been in that depression before, I just saw in this quest light in the tunnel from simply being given the opportunity, which was then up to me to take it.

    kinda understandable how Furina's vision made a fuss. Since all of the Hydro authority is returned to Neuvillette, he has the authority to grant Visions, evident with the dragon fangs in the frame. In a way, it is indeed a gift from Neuvillette and an acknowledgement of all she's done. There's a bit of nuance on how Visions are given which can be understood through various lore and theory videos, but that's pretty much there is to be understood with the cutscene.

But tbh, that pushiness is what got Furina to come out of her shell and perform freely as herself rather than as the “archon.” I’m not justifying that what they did WAS the right way to handle things, in fact, they could have helped Furina rebuild her confidence better. But in the end, Furina did what she wanted and she even learned a lot from this. That’s what matters more imo.

My opinion about these awful lines is, they(english localization team, either outsource to other companies or their own english translation team) are either NOT understanding context difference behind chinese script and english language culture ,just sort of directly translate it into english,or the team doesnt understand people in china and people in the west have different standard about personal space, for instant bilibili once commented marco is bolding or marco got fat, well i lived in mainland china,people are in general decently open to discuss about looking and dont take it personally a lot of the time, whereas in uk saying similar thing to your neighbor, even your friend might get youself in big trouble.

    I think what Paimon was meant to be doing was affectionate teasing. The tone is less aggressive in Japanese (the language I mostly play in), though the words as translated do seem to be more cutting than was meant. Regardless in any language that moment was really-to use one of Paimon’s favorite insults-tone-deaf, in that moment. You say that sort of thing once you know the other person can laugh it off.
    It’s a tricky balance though when it comes to prodding someone to return to something they once loved but refuses to due to grief and depression. I’ve been through that myself and on some days I loathed when my friends would try to get me to do things again. (I boiled with anger when one of them told me that I was “wasting my talents.”) But in other times I needed someone to get me out of my withdrawal and when I did, I didn’t regret it one bit. These days I think people err on the side of respecting someone’s stated boundaries, which is on the whole a good thing. But it’s made clear that Furina’s were drawn out of grief and fear and that her heart of hearts wanted out. Finding her way back, on her own terms, is what the story is about, and it resonated deeply with me as well.

But in Neuvillette story "Vision", he could give part of his power as a vision to someone who is worthy. So Furina is actually the first person that Neuvillette giving out vision, and it's a special one too. well this isnt a fact its a theory though you can debunk it. Archons dont grant visions, we know this yet they also sit upon the divine thrones that hold the sovereign authorities and have access to that power. We know this because well a normal hydro user cant very well control primordial sea water yet the hydro archon could to convert her oceanids to humans. Clearly authorities have no connection to the granting of visions and nuevilette just seems to have found his own way to grant visions though with limited use as he takes a potion of his own power and grants it to others thus weakening himself.

    The misinterpreted muscial out of context is actually pretty appropriate. Because when the director lady was writing it with different intentions, the rest of the group finished it as a sort of eulogy to her, but its also obvious that Furina was processing some of her own pain and emotions through the main character (funny enough, a lot of people like yourself and others also have done similar with Furina). The romantic love the MC in the play felt can be also the familial love the director felt for her group while also being the love Furina had for the people of her nation. The play is a work of fiction that people project their own feelings into or identify with, taking something new or different from it. You know the same way real people do in real life and genshin fans do with genshin.

    Most people were annoyed with how the traveler and paimon treated furina throughout the quest and, while I agree that they could've done better I think it really highlights how different the traveler and paimon are from humans. We tend to forget that the traveler is an ancient being that has traveled to many worlds and witnessed "the birth and death of countless stars" and that their understanding of emotions is disconnected from the way we understand them as humans. To them, furina's story is just a letter in a very, very thick book whereas it means so much more to us the viewer. This explains why they seem very insensitive at times because they don't understand human emotions as well as we do. A recurring theme in genshin's story is how gods struggle to understand human emotions and ambition so this seems like it's something intended by the writers. Another interesting thing I noticed too was how NPCs and human characters were more understanding of furina's struggles while divine beings like the traveler, paimon, and neuvilette were more pushy and less respectful of furina's boundaries.
    Ted talk aside, I really enjoy your reactions and insights to genshin's story and music. Keep up the great work Marco!

That's what separate the divine and humanity and why it's such a struggle onto both races. it's the same thing with Ei, her pursuit of eternity, shunning herself away from the real world literally harmed her people and Inazuma. It's because Ei couldn't understand how her definition of "Eternity" (Things stay the same as they are, permanently) put the people of her home in danger, but the kind that should be everlasting change and adaptability, which is something what Makoto and (originally) Ei wanted, before Makoto's passing. Definitely one of my favourite quests, Furina's love for her people and opera is still there despite everything that went through and its beautiful to see her find a way to overcome her bad experience.
    The people that attended the opera that day must feel very lucky they got to see the real little oceanid act in that play, not ever knowing this wasn't meant to happen.

    1:24:33 YES! And honestly, I loved it and saw it as purposeful. They're sympathetic, but also due to the fact that their characters are *meant* to be actors, I took their dramatics in stride. They're meant to be exaggerated depictions of humanity. I also love how they're all flawed- their motivations are also their vices. The man passionate about saving the troupe overrides the decisions of his fellow troupe members. The sick girl harrasses her loved ones about their health due to her concern. The guy in love with the director and dedicated to respecting her memory held onto his love for her in a disrespectful way.
    And then all of that exists as assisting pieces to bolster Furina's image as more human and authentic than she considers herself to be.

    I love every seconds of this Fontaine Acts.
    As a person who grew up with theater performance.
    The last Act even hit me harder than Sumeru.
    and it struck me again with her story quest. It's just so timeless tragic and beautiful in every way.
    I don't know how miHoYo is going to top this. (but I hope you find a way)
    Truly an amazing job, miHoYo.

    • @O-P-96
      @O-P-96 7 місяців тому +6

      Yeah, Fontaine hits hard. Sumeru was already tragic in its conclusion because of what Greater Lord Rukkhadevata had to do to save her people (her last words to her people will never fail to make me tear up, especially when you hear her voice in EN breaks as if she's holding back her tears). But it was expected to be tragic from start to finish because of Nahida being trapped for hundreds of years, forbidden to leave her prison because of the Sages.
      Furina on the other hand played her part so well that, while it was obvious as the story progressed that she was hiding something, the truth of who she really was was hidden from everyone, and things didn’t seem as dramatic immediately. So it was a huge mood whiplash when the bratty and arrogant Archon turns out to be a mere human girl, albeit one that is the human aspect of the Hydro Archon, who was cursed with immortality just so she could play the longest and loneliest opera of all times, with no way of when it would end, and being aware that the moment she dropped the act for even a second in front of someone, her nation would be destroyed. Foçalors ordered her in that prison of loneliness and suffering, and Furina willingly went along with it because, despite how it may appear at first, she truly cares for everyone's wellbeing, and would sacrifice hers for their sake.
      And to make things worse, what is the one thing Focalors, Rukkhadevata and Makoto all share? It's that only a handful of people truly know of who they were and what they sacrificed (only Ei, Yae, Paimon and the Traveler know of Makoto; Rukkhadevata has been forgotten by all but the Traveler and possibly the other Descenders if my memory is correct; and apart from Neuvillette, Furina, the Traveler and Paimon, the true extent of what Foçalors and Furina had to do is not known). And it might just be me, but I feel like that's a lot of tragedy for the past Archon Quests (well, Story Quest for Ei and Makoto). So I can't wait to see what future stories we will see. Although I am worried of things turning for the worst for Teyvat and our characters during or following the Snezhnaya Archon Quest...

    So glad to see you've finally played it. Commented on the initial video where you covered the story teaser and it was so hard to restrain saying more that could spoil, but now that you've gotten to see it, I can finally say, holy hell is this quest amazing.
    I'd even put it on par, if not slightly above the archon quest itself. While it was less bombastic and certainly lacked the diversity of stories told in the main, there was something so deeply touching about the exploration of Furina's deeper personal thoughts. Which is funny to think about considering that you quite literally got to see into Furina's mind in the Archon quest. I could honestly probably count on one hand how often a story manages to cover trauma and going through the stages of grief that well.
    It was a tad bit expedited in the story quest, sure, but at the same time, you get to see her at her lowest. That despite being free, she's still completely broken by the whole ordeal. Then, throughout the story, you get to see her really find some sense of joy again.
    There's obviously the cutscene. As I said last time, actual chills.
    But man. That ending where she's kinda seeing that her passion and love for performance hit me. It was clear that she saw it all to be a boundary she could never cross and she could never do again, but then twisting it to be her passion for expressing herself rather than putting on a façade was *phenomenal* development. And I think it still worked in the story quest because of just how well she personally related to the character. It's never stated outright, but from all the subtle hints, it very much seemed like she saw herself, at least to some degree, in the character of Clio.
    Just god. What a strong storyline. Genuinely sucker punch after sucker punch of phenomenal storytelling throughout the entirety of Fontaine. Glad to see you're loving it as well !

    A follow-up: this story also seems to be about Traveler and Paimon learning how to treat someone with deep scars. Even people who know about your baggage might treat it lightly, nonetheless causing you to relive extremely painful memories and feelings. But if you respond frankly and kindly like Furina does, eventually they figure out your tells, and may be willing enough to respect the boundaries that initially seemed trivial to them. Furina is a great example of someone recovering from PTSD/other such conditions, despite how silly the in-universe timeline is.
    But to that end, I don't really like the ending too much, given how Furina performing thwarts the boundaries she clearly set for herself. But they still did her justice.

Trying to balance a deeper side to a character while also maintaining the marketing (Furina as a marketable character that's flamboyant and loves the spotlight). As well as trauma, boundaries, but also overcoming them. Unfortunately I think they didn't let the character develop long enough (also something that's hard to portray in a simple video game for phones).

    I think the problem with Aether and Paimon and the discrepancy arose due to to difference in our and the in-game characters' perspective.
    Paimon doesn't understand what Furina has been through. For her, Furina was treated as a God for half a millenium, living in a big palace luxuriously. If anything, she might envy the treatment she got and doesn't see the problems she is facing.
    Aether's problems, on the other hand, arises due to boundaries. He knows Furina the best, he has literally seen her inner world, but Furina doesn't recognize him as such. So, Aether is coming off as mean while (I believe) what he is trying to do is to have her accept her passion as an actor, but Furina and we, the audience, just feels creeped out with the over familiarity he is displaying. Or at least I think so, because I don't believe the writers would just wake up and randomly choose to make him an ass.

      That’s what I’m saying. The traveler hasn’t really formed a bond with Furina, at least not a strong one. The best they have done is sit beside her while Furina was getting harassed by The Knave (supposedly protecting her but they didn’t step in to shut up the knave; and I get it, the knave wasn’t really in the wrong, from their perspective Furina needed to be pressured to act as the god she was supposed to be but my point stands. The traveler did a poor job of being a support to Furina)
      All I’m saying is that, to Furina, the traveler and paimon are mere acquaintances, not friends. Sure they may have played a role in the salvation of Fontaine, but they are also the ones that antagonized her on many occasions.

    What I like about this quest is that it not only touches upon Furina's personal struggles, but also the lingering scars of the events leading up to the prophecy, such as the Serial Disappearances and the Flood of Poisson. Perhaps it was the latter that convinced Furina to step over her own self-established boundary so that she could maybe help with the healing process for the nation even a little. Who knows what the future holds for both her and Fontaine, but I feel optimistic for both after this story quest.

    Maybe I’m a weird here, but I don’t feel MC and Paimon rude or sth. Actually I don’t give any thought about them. All my focusing is Furina. And to me she was never an actual friend of MC. MC can know her secret because he is outlander, but it doesn’t mean her emotion and feelings depend on their relationship. And paimon is just paimon, it’s half of teyvat already and I understand her too much to blame or expect anything from her. That’s why I dont care whatever they said or did for Furina. To me Furina was strong to endure 500 years of mission, and she doesnt need anyone to pity her. Her wish was that Fointain people can win over the prophecy, and it happened. Just like the little oceanid, they never did it for praise or for being understood. That’s what make Furina shines more in my eyes.

  • @BadassBaconator
    @BadassBaconator 7 місяців тому +2

    For the song, the way I see it, the love interest in the play is symbolic of Furina/Focalors being able to live truly as a human. Experiencing love and living normally in the world of Fontaine would be very human activities, not involved in the greater schemes at work and living for one's self. But it wasn't possible for her to do that as she was both divinity and human, and since her divinity placed upon her the grave burden of duty she had as an archon in releasing her people from a sin that she didn't even commit. In the play and directly told through the song, the Little Oceanid sacrifices her desired life and becomes sea foam (like the little mermaid) to ensure the safety and well being of both her lover and the entire nation, which is facing a catastrophe due to a a sin which, with important emphasis, she did not commit herself. In the play, the sin is the people's behavior driving the water away, and in Furina/Focalors reality, it's the sin of the appropriation of the Primordial sea by Egeria.
    This is a mirror to what Focalor did the entire quest; She was duty bound to sacrifice herself for something she really did not sign up for. In the Little Oceanid, the oceanid wasn't the cause but had the power to fix everything. In reality, she also was not the cause, but the title of archon was thrust upon her and by extension the duty of saving everyone. By sacrificing herself and releasing the Hydro Archon's authority of water (turning into seafoam in the play), she ensured a future where her human half (the life she coveted, her 'lover' in the play) and the nation of Fontaine at large (which is still Fontaine in the play) could continue to prosper. The primary irony here is that Fontaine in reality faced a flooding crisis, and in the play faced a drought crisis.
    The lyrics of the song say words such as "If only true love were enough. . . My wish. . ." which is her lamenting if only she could live as her full self, both divinity and human, amongst her people, which in the play would be the lover and Furina. But her greater wish was the survival of both her humanity and humans at large, and so true love wasn't enough and begged a larger sacrifice.
    Furina/Focalors story is a tragic one of duty vs. desire.
    Also regarding paimon/traveler, somce Furina was mistreated by Paimon and the traveler in the beginning, and it frames her story in a weird angle throughout the entire thing. While some people say it was necessary/a trigger, I highly disagree with this and the only reason paimon/traveler gets absolved is because Furina herself comes through for story convenience's sake. They were very dismissive and brusque with their recognition of her emotional state. Realistically, this kind of treatment to someone processing trauma/depression would more likely just make them raise their barriers even further and push them away. Not a fan of the writing on Paimon/Traveler's part.

    So, it seems that most people dont know that we never told paimon abt what was going on with Furina. She didn't know abt Focalor nor abt Furina's actual self, so ofc everything she said in this quest isnt that bad, considering she still doesn't know. Also I really like how she got bee vision, a vision represents ones ambition, Furina getting the vision at the moment she did is amazing. It represents her ambition to be on stage once again, but not as a facade, but as herself and she can finally enjoy the roles she plays here on after. I personally think that people took everything a little to much at face value and didnt look at the deeper meanings. Also, that could've been why traveler was so pushy in the beginning (paimon was too but she didnt know anything abt how much Furina suffered and only did understand when Furina expressed herself on the ship), cause he knew she wanted to be back on the stage, just as Neuvi did, all she needed was a small push to help her take that one step forward. I personally think this was an amazing and fleshed out SQ. Also, paimon isnt wrong, Furina IS still a bit of a drama queen, but thats because of the roll she was forced to play. It still affects her and intentionally or not she still puts on that "god" persona. Its another thing i liked and noticed in the beginning, that she fluctuates between the 2. Maybe u didnt notice. Anyway, good day. But yea, i think people's hate against paimon is unwarranted but not unfounded. Tho, to each their own

      I seriously wish they would give us dialogue options to shut Paimon up every now and then. There have been more than a few instances where my first reaction was “Shut it before I shove you in the travel bag until this conversation is over!”

      Not just rude but disrespecting her BOUNDARIES and when Furina mellowing out and having sincere moments, here comes Paimon being rude and killing the mood.

    I assumed there was a hefty timeskip between the archon quest and this because the flood did not just happen instantly, and it had to recede. That's already one whole day at least, and then the city had to be "rebuilt". As someone who has experienced serious floods (I'm from the Philippines), that stuff takes a while, and it's not even Fontaine-level flood. Also to add, Furina mentioned that she'd just been eating macaroni, for weeks. I'd give it at least a month worth of timeskip.

    Kind of sad that we didn't get to talk to her at all after the trial, not even to apologize and explain that we had no choice.

    • @Soulferno
      @Soulferno 7 місяців тому +4

      I don't think that would mean anything to her since I'm sure she understood how things came to be and why they did it in the first place. Making an apology would probably come off as pity and her character clearly isn't one for grudges coddling, no matter how many fans believe on her behalf that she is. We were even told that she wasn't exactly feeling anything when she was told the truth about Focalor's plan, just that she was tired. Immediate positive reinforcement or anything like that after such an emotionally turbulent experience can do more harm than good. It's why for me, I was very happy to see that she wasn't happy-go-lucky and ready to mingle with people so readily(these quests imply that they happen days if not weeks after the events that transpire beforehand). It's a very realistic and I'd say respectful approach to Furina's character. She really is Genshin's magnum opus of character writing, to be a little dramatic

      @hmmmooops 7 місяців тому

      @@Soulferno I just wanted her to know that we didn't hate her. She already felt guilty and the citizens were against her in the trial.

    • @sarethdarva
      @sarethdarva 7 місяців тому +1

      I actually feel like this was fine. Partly because I knew the story quest would essentially serve as the part where we just focus on her, and partly because from her perspective, our or citizens apologizing isn’t nearly as meaningful as the acknowledgement she got from Focalors/“mirror-me.” Remember, she has not heard from her in 500 years, and it was easy for her to doubt whether all the anguish was even worth anything-and up until then she’d thought it had all been in vain anyway. Hearing mirror me saying that she has done the right thing and had been faithful all along was the thanks she needed the most. Everything else would pale in comparison.
      That was the part that moved me to tears the most by the way. It is her being told by God-kind of literally-“well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into your rest.”

    • @talamioros
      @talamioros 7 місяців тому

      I think it would've been subsumed under the consciousness that it was predestined and part of Mirror-me's plan, since that was the grand trial she had been told to expect that would herald both the culmination of the prophecy AND the end of her long vigil. I.e. it wouldn't have mattered. She would've known it was fated.

    Marco, I think you should check Furina's constellation name and do a video about all the opera references.
    “Love Is a Rebellious Bird That None Can Tame” - L'amour est un oiseau rebelle - Carmen
    “A Woman Adapts Like Duckweed in Water” - La Donna E Mobile - Rigoletto
    “My Secret Is Hidden Within Me, No One Will Know My Name” - Nessun Dorma - Turandot
    “They Know Not Life, Who Dwelt in the Netherworld Not!” - Orphée aux enfers?
    “His Name I Now Know, It Is…!” - Diecimilla anni al nostro imperatore - Turandot
    “Hear Me - Let Us Raise the Chalice of Love!” - Libiamo ne' lieti calici - La Traviata

    I'm glad i watched your playthrough, this was very insightful as a former performer.
    I was as annoyed as you with Paimon and the dialogue options, but i guess that's Hoyoverse's way to do a wake up call on people that have this attitude. Maybe it could have resonated better if her quest was released at a later patch.
    Also, congrats on the double performance!

    This quest was simply amazing, I understood and felt bad about Furina's initial feelings towards acting after her 500 year long performance. Yet seeing her finally be able to separate her traumatic experience with acting from her passion for it was great.
    And since everyone's talking about it, I have to say that I also felt Paimon's attitude during some of Fontaine's quests felt rude, as if she was oblivious to the feelings and emotions characters like Navia or Furina were going through.

    1:32:36 As a Chinese player who played all the quest in Chinese voiceover, I have to say that the English dubbing of Paimon always can't find the right and proper tone to speak. I've seen several native English livestreamers that don't like Paimon even more after this line. Whoever understands Chinese can feel the nuance of this line is absolutely not hateful... And as it always has been, the English Paimon always speaks in a skyhigh tone which sounds like the righmost key of the piano...Shouldn't we just change a English CV for Paimon?
