PLEASE NOTE: Out of my excitement of getting this job done and the limited time I had, I completely forgot to remove the wheel weight and paint underneath the area. If this happens to you, no big deal. Just have to touch it up whenever the tires need to get replaced. For now let’s enjoy the new look of this beautiful truck. 42 mpg is what I’m getting on average!
Great job. I've used the same routine painting my 2000 F150 wheels black. I can go back a several decades when cars had steel wheels painted identical to body color. Those too were painted black on my cars.
Thank you bro, it took some work but thankfully I was able to get it done. I hope many people can do this to their trucks since the black wheels make the truck look a-lot better. Thanks for watching
I was thinking about this mod as I can't really justify the cost of new wheels and tires. Looks amazing for what it is. I'm curious if I would do this with them mounted on the car even.
The black definitely looks better! I did this to my Jeep Wrangler and now to my dump trailer. My maverick is a stripped hybrid xlt coming around July, can’t wait. Was there a clear coat on the silver? I sanded off my wrangler wheels and lasted 13 years until I sold.
Looks good, i would go one srep further and get rid of the little hubcap and install spiked lugnuts. You also may be able to purchase little disc caps to cover the centre hole on the rim.👍🍻
Hey frank! Amazing explanation 👍👍, i dont know if its difficult to remove the wheel weight and put it back again? What kind of tool should i use to do that? By the way, with 2 cans of paint is enough to paint the 4 wheels? Thanks a lot, man, definetly i will do the painting but maybe another color
Only thing other than the some of the things allready mentioned. Those jack stands are rated 2 ton for the pair not per jack stand. Otherwise looks good
You got a point, maybe that’s why Ford paints all of them gray, So they don’t look so cheap. At the end of the day no matter what color they are, they’re still basic Steele wheels. In my point of view, they didn’t go well with the truck since nothing has gray. Only black trim, so to my preference I loved how the new color turned out. Thanks for watching, stay tuned for future videos
We are in the Pacific Northwest. The back windows come darkened from factory but I added an additional 15% tint to them and it made it super dark. I believe thats legal for the back windows but not for the front ones. Legal limit is 35% for fronts. Thanks for watching and consider subscribing for more future videos
Looks great. Like professional! But it doesn't be cheaper to pay a professional to do that? I made a quick accounting of all the materials you used, and it's almost $250. I can be wrong, but some professionals could charge around $100-$200 to do it with no effort.
Good job, However, just buy aluminum alloy wheels and install it would be much better solution on this steel wheels. It will reduce 9Lbs of weight on each single wheel. that way it is much better for fuel economy, better looks and riding comfort as well. reducing 36lbs on suspension part will affect 10 times better driving comfort. because it moves faster driving on the uneven road condition.
This is a very nice look but you made a crucial mistake. You failed to sand or at least scuff the factory paint on the wheels. The paint you put on will eventually begin to flake or peel off. Paint needs something to bite into, it's called mechanical adhesion. If you're not going to sand or scuff you could have used an adhesion promoter such as 3M adhesion promoter 111 which is a chemical that softens the base layer and allows the paint to bond onto it. As far as the center caps, you should have also scuffed those to improve adhesion. I always use 3M 07447 red Scotch Brite pads on plastic parts and wheels prior to painting since it easily conforms to the odd shapes and crevices of the wheels and center caps during the very important scuffing sessions. Hopefully, this information will help you and others who decide to paint their steelies in the future.
That’s why I got the Paint+Primer so sanding wont be necessary. The new paint adhered crazy well to the new factory wheels. I’ll post a comment and let you know if down the road the paint ever fails, I doubt it though. Especially since I used super good quality paint. Thanks for watching
I painted my F150 rims black. I used self etching primer then painted flat black. 5 years of use all kinds of weather. No flaking or peeling. Paint looks smooth......no sanding. Some times get rock chips.....justxtouch up
The paint will lift after a while . All the reviews i saw about this truck were hapy with the steelies look. I'd prefer alloy but i wouldnt paint the metal ones . Plus when you ger new tires the intallation will lift all thar paint on the edges and touch ups never look as good. To each his own, just my personal preferences.

Frank how have they held up a year later bro?
That’s the color of my maverick. I’ve been thinking about painting my wheels also.
Exactly what I want to do to my Maverick when I get it. Major improvement and great work.
I highly recommend it. Changes the whole look of the truck. And only costs $20 for all 4 spray cans at Home Depot.
Great job. I've used the same routine painting my 2000 F150 wheels black. I can go back a several decades when cars had steel wheels painted identical to body color. Those too were painted black on my cars.
Finally got mine. I will be doing the same. Thanks so much for the video.
Nice truck good helpful video brother thank you.
Thank you very much, really appreciate it.
Very nice in back. White would look even better with blue body paint.
Thank you very much, I love the look in black. If you ever do one in white, let me know. I’d love to see it
Use some scotch pad to ruff the surface a little before painting it will help the paint stick
It looks good. Good job.

Can't wait to paint my Steeles, thanks so much!
Great idea bro!
Job well done Frank. Like what you did. Appreciate the time you take filming. I actually find it relaxing!! lol. 😁
great video
Thank you
Looks good! I would like to paint mine all black then put a set of adorable silver hubs on it. Just need to find some that would work
Nice Job
Thank you very much!
very good 👍
This is awesome
Yes thank you
Some chrome rim rings makes it even better.
Wow looks great!
Love the video how have they held up?
I was thinking about this mod as I can't really justify the cost of new wheels and tires. Looks amazing for what it is. I'm curious if I would do this with them mounted on the car even.
It looks way better honestly 👍
Great video! How do the rims look now? Any peeling, etc. Things youd recommend I do.

I’m thinking of going with a bronze color on the wheels when my XL arrives next year … thank you for the video , your wheels look great 👌🏻
Nice....Exactly, waiting for my all black XL Ranger to be built then delivered and i too am going with a broze color. 😎👍 seen pics and they look good
Did you not have to sand?
About to do this on my new Mav 🙌 thanks for info. Wou ld you suggest sanding the wheels before applying the paint?
I don't know why ford wouldn't just sell the steelies in black like this, they did it for cop cars for decades
Nice job. Where did you get the hub caps?
They actually came with the truck
How’s it holding up a year later?
Looks good, i would go one srep further and get rid of the little hubcap and install spiked lugnuts. You also may be able to purchase little disc caps to cover the centre hole on the rim.👍🍻
Idk I like the OG steelies
Frank how have they held up a year later bro?
Actually silver is better than black. Most Steelies are painted black. So silver is more retro too.

That’s so cool I’ll definitely try that on my Mavrick when I get some time also did you Tint the front windows by yourself or did it come like that?
I had all the windows tinted. The back windows come with a factory tint, but I added an additional tint on top of that to make it darker.
@@frankshandymanservice cool
How many hours did it take total? Why didn't you sand down the rims before spraying?
This just makes them look even cheaper

No it did not, plus to each their own negative head.
@@frankshandymanservice I think some bigger, white letter tires would really set everything off nicely.
Jack stand on jack edge is wrong. I hope you are on frame.
Nice work! Also, that is some very dark tint. What % is that and what state are you in that allows it that dark? Thanks!

Traffic traffic looking for my Chapstick there's a Ford Maverick
Great
Hi
Hi how are you? Thanks for watching!

Did you paint the inside of the wheels?
Thankfully the inside of the wheel is painted black from the factory so I didn’t have to do that. Just the outside
Good job, However, just buy aluminum alloy wheels and install it would be much better solution on this steel wheels. Thank you for the tip, will keep in consideration. Its always good to learn from each other
I think the Steel Wheels look FANTASTIC! Great job
Your already getting 42 MPG and not wasting money on Alloy wheels, the point is money savings, not spending money on unnecessary things

Thanks for your feedback, so far paint is holding up super well. I’ll let you know if at any point it ever fails. Thanks for watching

really not a fan of the flat black paint and/or matte clear. I'd go gloss.

Those are wheels, not rims. It's tires and wheels. Rims are for bicycles.
Oh, but nice prep and work. Looks good.
Thank you for That clarification. I will keep it in mind for my next post if I ever do something like this again. Thanks for watching
