The VizBig quality strikes again! Those vagabond books are so weakly built, but it’s what we got to deal with to experience that wonderful series. It does take its time, but it’s such a beautiful journey to be on, I hope you enjoy it
A few days ago, I learned that a friend of mine is really into the The Lies of Locke Lamora due to a conversation about more books needing strong bromances. I recommended your channel and he said, “I love her!” And I was like, “Me, too!” I think I may have to pick up this book now.
@@merphynapier42 You are also the one that finally convinced me to check out Sanderson as well. I read the Stormlight Archive and then Mistborn. Am I considered in the minority that I liked Mistborn Era 2 more than the first part? Stormlight>Mistborn 2>Mistborn 1.
The binding did you so dirty! Big Win that you are reading 3 of my favorite manga series of all time at the same time. Yona, Vagabond and Viland Saga are all amazing series!
I’m going to finish the Lady Trent Memoirs series today, I’m so glad you introduced me to this series! I think book 3 is my favorite overall because I just LOVED the setting so much but the last 3 books in particular have been excellent.
You amaze me. I read precisely one (1) book in January, which was somehow still better than the whole of 2022. Yay me. I don't know what happened *after* finishing primary school but during my last two years of it, I read quite a lot, though I don't know about six books in one month... Anyway, I really want to do better this year and I think I will. Three Fridays ago, the day I started reading my first book of the year, it actually snowed at night and so I poured myself a glass of water, put some music one, shut my door, left just one lamp on and sat myself by the window to read while the snow fell outside. It was surreal and basically allowed me to feel the warm, cosy feeling I used to have of escaping into another world (though perhaps not the best expression for this particular novel) while reading again. As for the actual book I read, it was Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. Usually, one would probably feel put off by having to read a book for school, which was the case for this one, but I wasn't really. I have two more novels left left to read for the course and it's fine, it serves as a bit of motivation for me to get back into reading. Plus, Fallen Angels was actually quite an engaging book - gritty, brutally honest about war (I think I remember wincing at a description of something) - but engaging nonetheless (or perhaps because of it). Specifically, it's about the Vietnam War, which the protagonist, Richie Perry, goes to participate in. He's seventeen years old, I believe; there was an interview with the author included in the book and he mentioned in it that he wanted to highlight the youth of the soldiers, one of the things I was referring to by "brutally honest", comparing his novel to films where they're portrayed by older actors. What I enjoyed most about it I would say was the camaraderie (I was feeling so smart and special about using that word but then you used it while talking about Island of the Lost 😪) between Perry and the others (most of them, anyway). So yeah, 'twasn't bad. I spent more time on this comment than I have on the work I have to do now that I've finished reading the novel (I actually finished it over two weeks ago but shush, me).
I picked up Monday’s Not Coming this month because of your recommendation and it was amazing. She’s an incredible writer. I can’t wait to read more of her work.
I’m so happy you’re getting Yona! It’s so worth the first chunk that might not be as fun, but the rest after volume 7 just gets better and better each volume.
VERY excited to reread Vagabond alongside you guys reading it for the first time! I love the manga and it is easily one of my favorites, especially because of the characters and the philosophy. This is a more philosophical work, so be ready for that: a lot of soul searching, meaning of life, what is love, friendships, etc. Very heavy on the theme, but I LOVE that!
Merph I would listen to anything and everything you get involved with, all types of discussions you ever wanna get in front of a camera to talk about and then subsequently upload. I just really, really, really like listening to you. You’re a balm for my soul.
My favourite books I read in January were Ken Liu's Grace of Kings, Robin Hobb's Wilful Princess & the Piebald Prince and Bernard Cornwell's Lords of the North.
Oh, man. I had three omnibuses of a comic series I loved delivered, and the last of the volumes had a misprint where some of the colors weren't aligned, so it looked like those old 3D drawings with the red and blue glasses every other page. I feel you on that *Vagabond* book, that's _rough._
Please leave your channel as is please don’t change a thing as your channel is amazing and fantastic and I love it 🥰 prayers and thoughts for you and your husband and your beautiful children love your Aussie friend John 💙💙💙
Hi Murphy, I just started the Discworld saga as well, but my OCD self said "gotta start with the first one", so I listened to the audiobook version of The Colour Of Magic - quite enjoyable. I also found out there were 2 movie length TV shows done in Great Britain in 2008 to cover the first two books (The Light Fantastic being the second one) and, by some great miracle, was able to find them on Roku TV of all places. Those were wonderfully done, and Terry Pratchett even made a brief appearance. I have heard that the Discworld books don't have to be consumed in order, so I may try Guards!, Guards! next, as I think it is more widely available. Thank you for the summary!
My heart goes out to your fustrations with that binding. I've had this experience with my Salior Moon Manga with the Mixx publishing of it. (Before the Sailor Moon Crystal anime came out and they reprinted it in newer binding). It looks like they did a similar binding to those where the gluing and the cover spine are a bit "low grade". (which honestly does the Manga dirty as well because I do know a few people who would never pick up a book if the binding is "cheap") So I totally understand your fustration. It's a hit and miss with that type of binding so don't be suprised if the second book you get ends up staying together but maybe four books down the line it happens again. It's an unfortnate price of that type of binding. I honestly am considering reading Tress of the Emerald Sea after I finish off the rest of my TBR that I've broken several times already (I started a buddy read with a friend for "A Natural History of Dragons" last week and got to chapter 5 within one sitting..... And gods do I love Lady Trent and it's *hard* to get me to enjoy a first person. I'm still reading the tome that is "Lies of Locke Lamora" and reading "At the Edge of the World" (collection of short stories) by Lord Dunsany as well as reading/listening to "The King of Elfland's Daughter" also by Lord Dunsany..... Plus still reading "the Rowan" and have plans to pick back up "Deerskin" where I left off........ I really need to stop braking my TBR) And I may consider trying Yona after I get through the REST of my TBR.............. I already have Pandora Hearts to get to the end of (which is actually a great manga that isn't talked about enough, but again... need to finish my first part of my TBR I have going.)
I've been slowly (very slowly) retaking the habit of reading. Last year I handled to read two books per month, this year so far I'm on 4 per month. I really hope to be more like you and read at least 6 or 7 per month
Same thing happened with my Vizbigs for Vagabond, I do recommend the single volumes if they're available where you live, the quality is way better and you get gorgeous covers for each volume! Will you also do solo arc reviews for it like Vinland or only discussions with Phillip? I can never get enough Vagabond content so I'd be a bit sad if it were only the discussions!
I just finished the tower of babel and I'll say this. Senlin Is the catalyst, so you follow him through his journey, but the series is about the tower. There is some dispute with how the series ended and I get it. It's very plot focused ending even though a lot of the book seems so character focused. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but it was a jarring finish.
Looks like you had a productive January of reading. I could only dream of getting that many in. However, I did read 4 in Jan. Forgetting Moon by Durfee, Might As Well Be Dead by Rex Stout, Joyland by King, and s Frankenstein by Shelly re-read. Starting Feb off with a couple mysteries... Calamity Town (an Ellery Queen novel) and Seduction of the Innocent by Collins (a Hard Case Crime paperback novel). Hope everyone else had as good a time reading.
How did no one tell me that Tress of the Emerald Sea was "what if Buttercup had more agency." Much more interested in it now! Also I remember liking the unique take on the big bad defeat in Inheritance but it's been a while so who knows how I would feel about it now.
Oh that is so cool you started Discworld! I just finished "Hogfather" which is his Christmas/holiday book. It gave me all the warm cozy holiday feelings that I needed in January while also diving into the philosophy and purpose/nature of belief. I recommended it later down the road if you keep enjoying Discworld!
I actually had Mort by Terry Pratchett in queue but moved it up after your glowing review of Guards Guards! I am having a blast with it! Its the first book in the "Death" series and I feel like Pratchett wrote it to prove that he can make you fall in love the absolute most naive character.
I'd like the best/worst at the end. It makes it more exciting to try to guess while explaining the books. Also, I LOVE the stats, but I usually just listen to UA-cam while working, so if you could also just read them off in additional to showing the graphics. Thanks! (Of course this is just what I'd like, you should do what most people want, don't change your whole challenge just for me! LOL)
It appears that I am legally obligated to comment on a video each time that Yona of the Dawn is mentioned. I am so happy to know that you are thoroughly enjoying the story now that things have slowed down a bit. I'm also really happy that you are enjoying Yona as a character, including the side characters. I was worried for a second because, in a previous blog, you had said something along the lines of Yona as a character not leaving an impression, but I'm glad that you came around for her with time. I also wanted to mention that it is really cathartic to know you are enjoying it with these latest volumes, and I personally consider everything up to the Awa Arc to be some kind of a prologue to the story, and after that is even better. I hope you keep enjoying it, and I'm excited to hear more of your thought in future blogs. Lastly, I think it'd be nice if this Yona gets a series discussion on the main channel   :nudge: :nudge: . (I was going to put the last part in bold, but then I remember you had problems reading bold letters due to your dyslexia ; ) . )
Thrilled you like Pratchett. I know you will be going into the witches arc next. Which is good. May I also give a tip: go and do the wizards too, kinda the opposite of the witches they are Pratchett's take on scientists and academia. It involves inter dimensional travel :-) oh and read hogfather during Christmas period
Hey Murphy! I was wondering if you're planning on reading Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow? It's my fave installment in that series, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it 🤗

Completely agree on Arm of the Sphinx. What should have been the end of book 2 occurs in book 3. I will be curious to see if your thoughts on book 3 because I have some strong thoughts on what happens and how the series continues.
I just finished Inheritance last week for the first time and completely agreed with the ending. May be a hint of spoilers ahead so anyone reading this, read with caution. I was REALLY hoping to see a big dragon fight with the villains dragon but it seemed to have just ended really easily. The fights were some of my favourite parts in the other books so it was a tad disappointing. Still had fun with the series overall though.
Since you asked for an opinion, I prefer the best and worst at the end of the video. I enjoy trying to figure out which will take it based on the rest of the video. I'm starting Malazan soon, once I finish Sharp Ends.
Do you read much non-fiction? History, biography, philosophy, religion? I'm in the middle of "Victoria: The Queen" by Julia Baird, and really enjoying it. Not quite a page-turner, but well put together and very interesting. "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin, about the inner workings of Abraham Lincoln's presidential cabinet, was one of my favorites.
Yup, the final battle of Inheritance was very meh, I loved it for first 3 books too And damn, I am in a pickle, I need to re-read both Yona and Vagabond to watch your videos about them on top of stuff I am already reading
Guys dont recommend such random mangas... I dont have anything against them but Merphy its still new to the medium, she needs to dive into quality, learn how mangakas work, find amazing writters, get to know japanese culture regards manga, etc. There are a lot of things she needs to get used to first since she is still new than jumping into random mangas that she might not understand at all but might understand it better after more time and experience on the medium. I know Merphy can make up her mind, but I bet she also allows it since her audience has merged with mangas and she doesnt want to be rude and hurt her new followers. Just think about it, not saying you need to recommend top 10 mangas... But you get the point while she is still fresh to the medium. I might said few things wrong but I think Im right on the main point.
For the Vagabond omnis the same for me, and I saw other people too, so I sold them out, these editions are terrible. I bought the singles in my mother language (Brazilian Portuguese, I also preffer our editions of Vinland and Berserk). If you read any other language than English I'd suggest getting your Vagabond as those, the singles in english are also hard to find it seems.
The anime had the perfect opportunity to take everything that happened after Goldy Pond and expand or change the material to fix some of the admittedly pretty bad problems with the mangas second half yet it decided to make it even worse.
okay hear me out last year there was a book you reviewed and I cant find it it had magic in it I think and was compared to HP and it had a guy with an umbrella on the frsont cover and I cant figure out what it was for the life of me
In case you are ever tempted in the future to watch The Watch on BBC, just know I would rather watch the live action Last Airbender on repeat for a week than another minute of that show. I wholeheartedly wanted it to be great, am not concerned at all about gender flipped characters, and am always willing to forgive changes to source material if it is in the spirit of the story and is needed to work with the new medium. I made it 3 episodes.
I swear I got a headache seeing how you treated Guards! Guards! and Vagabond! No, it wasn't because I'm living through Brazilian tropical summer with over 90% humidity! No! It was you and those poor books!
Seeing all the pieces of Vagabond in your hands, dropping all over the place and your frustration with it was pretty darn hysterical.
The VizBig quality strikes again! Those vagabond books are so weakly built, but it’s what we got to deal with to experience that wonderful series. It does take its time, but it’s such a beautiful journey to be on, I hope you enjoy it
NOOOO NOT Vagabond! This is such a great series RIP the books we lost on our adventure.

Viz bigs are truly horrendous. I was reading one, flipped a page and the page came off in my hand. And it was a chill flip too.

I just finished the tower of babel and I'll say this. Senlin Is the catalyst, so you follow him through his journey, but the series is about the tower. There is some dispute with how the series ended and I get it. It's very plot focused ending even though a lot of the book seems so character focused.
The inheritance cycle was a hard DNF for me.
I also finished Arm of the Sphinx in January and also didn't like as much as the first one. I'll still continue but I'm not making it a priority.
👏 I need merphy to read the promised neverland 👏
Ooh. That one would be nice. We need people counteracting the reputation given by the anime's second season.
@@bastion4975 yes! Honestly it's like the anime took the mistakes from the manga and amplifies it 1000x
@@abrahamzayed7399, yeah. I remember people complaining about the pacing near the end of the manga. Now people have to be grateful. Lol.
The anime had the perfect opportunity to take everything that happened after Goldy Pond and expand or change the material to fix some of the admittedly pretty bad problems with the mangas second half yet it decided to make it even worse.
okay hear me out last year there was a book you reviewed and I cant find it it had magic in it I think and was compared to HP and it had a guy with an umbrella on the frsont cover and I cant figure out what it was for the life of me
Sounds like you had the opposite opinion on Inheritance to the one you had on Ship of Destiny.
You should have read at least one book by Sobers Rodrigues. No one writes better thriller than him.
So if every time you went to PR your books would become unbound like Vagabond, would you continue to go there knowing some book is going to die?
do you know me? 😂 I don't care if a few books die in my adventures
@@merphynapier42 please read promised neverland and my hero academia.
And cannot wait you and Philip discuss VAGABOND...
🧡📚🧡📚🧡📚🧡
Do you still plan on reading The Promised Neverland and Attack on Titan?
What about Hyperion? that was on the list of Jan, was and am still looking forward to that. Thanks for the content!
Still reading it! I'm taking it very slowly
Let's goooo
All those handsigns.. are you by any chance italian?
In case you are ever tempted in the future to watch The Watch on BBC, just know I would rather watch the live action Last Airbender on repeat for a week than another minute of that show.
I wholeheartedly wanted it to be great, am not concerned at all about gender flipped characters, and am always willing to forgive changes to source material if it is in the spirit of the story and is needed to work with the new medium. I made it 3 episodes.
Is not yona manga reverse Harem
This wrap up should be titled "The month where merphy massacred her books!"
Read magical realism. "100 years of solitude".
vizbig did a horrible job with vagabond volumes. it's really disappointing
Yeahhhhhh viz bigs and 3 in 1s aren't the best quality sadly
I know its very different, but Haikyuu to "replace" the climber ?? Upvote if you want it 😁
I'm up to date with yona of the dawn but i don't think it is that good manga but it is an ok read
I swear I got a headache seeing how you treated Guards! Guards! and Vagabond! No, it wasn't because I'm living through Brazilian tropical summer with over 90% humidity! No! It was you and those poor books!
Omg! Vagabond 🫢 I have enjoyed the 2 volumes of Vinland saga looking forward to collecting the rest of the books and hopefully finishing it.
