No Alcohol, No Musical Instruments, No Voting: Montana Mennonites Share Their Life

- In July 2017, I knocked on the door of a home in the middle-of-nowhere Montana. Just off the freeway snaking through the green valleys and snow-peaked mountains, I stopped to see who lived in this small house along a nearby river. Who called this place home?
Turned out it was a family of Mennonites.
Two girls in long, peach-colored dresses and matching bonnets answered the door. Soon mom came with baby in arm. Katie the mother welcomed me inside, talked a bit about their life in western Montana, and gave me her husband's card. Perhaps I could get a proper interview of their life on my way back through.
A couple of weeks later, that's precisely what happened.
This time, Katie and Jethro and kids were joined by another Mennonite family. Together we had dinner, they sang hymns, and then the two couples answers all of my questions about their way of life and outlook on the world.
I left with hours of footage and several photos. This volume of material, as well as this interview happening at the end of my trip last summer through the Pacific Northwest, are reasons why this video has taken me a year to complete. But good things do take time.
I think you'll enjoy Jethro, Katie, Titus, Gladys, and all their kids opening up about their life--their actions, their beliefs, and the reasons for them.

It's absolutely fabulous journalism, no propaganda, no prejudice or disrespect to anybody.
This family seemed very genuine in their faith, and I honestly love their simple life style. Everyone looks very happy in The Lord. The kids are adorable specially the little baby. God bless this family and the interviewer.
Great people that are probably happier than most👍👍
I'd AGREE! 🙂
I really wish there was quality journalism like this out there
will landis There is. Right here:)
I really like how in every answer he gives a scripture or references the Bible as to why they believe the way they do. They build their whole life and beliefs around God’s Word.
I don't know why but watching videos with these people and this lifstyle soothes my anxiety a lot!!!
I texted my daughter who is 40 and said “let’s become Mennonites. She said yes, everything I have heard I agree with.
@@maryann823 you cannot just become one.
@@jacobrohr5903 Yes you can
@@samymarcu562 would you care to explain the necessary steps to become a Mennonite? if it's as simple as you make it seem
@@jacobrohr5903 Are you a member if this community.
They’re a beautiful family with good morals. Maybe a bit detached from the world, but hey that’s honestly not a bad thing
"A bit detached" That's an understatement.
Detached from the worldy is a great thing.
@@mdaze9753 They connected to God ,the world is detached from God.
No musical instruments is a bit much in my opinion but they have a lot of good points.
@YikesBikes It's more so Catholics than Christians.
What a lovely family! You were very respectful as an interviewer.
Thanks, I appreciate that:) And yes, they were a terrific family and hospitable, too.
My mom was raised Mennonite in the state of Maryland so all my family on her side were Mennonites, whom I got to know well. Most of them were very kind people.
💐🇰🇼 From what i saw I have very
Good idea about Mennonites
They are very peace-full people
That I liked to live with them .
This word is full of nice people .
Greeting from kuwait 🇰🇼🇰🇼🇰🇼
Anyone notice No need for Macho or I'm in charge projection. Simplicity, Order, Procedure, Respect! I think I have made up my mind who I like!
I love all the Anabaptist groups! They're so humble and honest and kind. 😊
Thank you for this informative report and thanks to the Mennonite family for sharing their beliefs with us.
There's a lot of beauty in a simple life. These particular people seem very nice.
Beautiful family with great wisdom god bless you all
Great interview, thank you!
May GOD blessed this Family 💗😘🌲LOVE from Germany -🌼🌿Angie 🌼 🌿
What a beautiful family. We need more people like them!
I so wish I would have been raised the way they have so peaceful
Jenny Jenny don’t wish that. They only tell what they want you to know. I grew up in a Mennonite community.
Me too. ♡
Like any denomination, you will find those with a genuine walk and those who are going through the motions.
Dont think there arent still problems within the community. People are so pressured to stay of course they wont talk about it.
I hope you do realize they belong to a fundamentalist cult and everything that is said is scripted.
My parents had 5 children and never had medical and we rarely got a cold.
Back before so many vaccines and so much processed artificial foods, among other things.
What a lovely family! I would love to have this family as friends and neighbors ❤️!
I came down the aisle to Bach’s Air it was a sublime moment which really intensified the emotions of the day . Each to their own
What a blessed family they have!
Thanks for sharing. I agree with there way of life in some ways. Blessing to you and them.
Thanks so much, and you're very welcome! I'm in complete agreement. We can all learn something from each other.
I'm Baptist but greatly admire the Mennonite. I love the family structure. Y'all are much more prepared for this mess our world is in. People out in my world are just paranoid about this covid 19 stuff. I don't. I trust my Lord to take care of me. I quit watching television years ago. We have four televisions but never turn them on. I started it by a challenge we were given at church about "what is your idol?" The pastor told us that anything can be an idol, anything that consumes your time. We were challenged to give it up for a week so television used to be mine, at least two or three of ours was on all the time. We didn't really watch them but needed the "noise", so we felt. We even went to sleep with the TV on. So we quit, for a week, but at the end of the week we just kept them off. Your lifestyle keeps family first. God bless you!
Amen! That's a wonderful testimony and truth! I feel the Lord has been guiding me and convicting me about my time spent on my phone, particularly UA-cam. Even tho I watch wholesome content, it still may become an idol, like u stated if it is put above God. 😭🙏
If you respect them that much then, you should go be one of them.
@@tomleong9611 you shouldn't tell someone what to do
Thank you for your work :)
You're very welcome:) These days I'm taking a close look at the issue of homelessness across America. www.gofundme.com/documentaryhomelessness-in-america
Thank for this great video. Blessing
I would never be happy in this lifestyle, but I'm glad to know that there are people who are.
Love these people,,,they are wonderful
Great interview
Thank you for this insight. I am German. I knew that Mennonites came from Germany also. And once I read a biography of a Mennonite who chose not to fight in the Wehrmacht but still serve in 2nd world war as an army priest. This rose my interest pretty much. This here provides a most valuable insight view into this interesting group of people! Thank you!
Interestingly, I've since learned of the Anabaptists (the ancestors of the Mennonites) who took over Münster in the 1500s. It didn't end well for them. Do you know that story?
Real cool story about the WWII soldier. Thanks for watching, Michael!
@@ThePeriphery Watched others of your videos and really liked them! Try to read this book here, I read it in English and it is really fascinating: www.amazon.com/Witness-Times-War-Peace-Mennonite-ebook/dp/B016AX0VYK. I have to admit that I never heard of this story about Münster - it might be that we Germans have a real flat understanding of this part of our history - Lutherean seperation is always taught quite shallow! I will look this up these days and close this gap! Thanks so much for your insights! Greetings from Chile!
@@MichaelSchwark-yn3jb Thanks, I'll give it a look! -Brandon
Beautiful community.
There will be another interview coming up. There was a crew here last weekend filming and I am looking forward to seeing what they out together.
Hi, where is "here"? Are you in Montana?
What beautiful, humble people.....they are better off being uninformed. Their way of life is foreign to me, but they I sure wouldn't mind having them as my neighbors.
Shannon Ludden WE are not better off having uninformed people voting in our elections.
Good Tutt - The mennonites do not vote so being uninformed has no consequence to the political system.
John Kauffman They don't do their civic duty?
@@goodtutt4733 the most you can be in America is self sufficient nothing better.
Adrian Brent That sounds pretty darn selfish!
Great people❤ Great community👍🏼
I admire their way of life. And my family does sing together, with the car radio.
Very bright home, love it! The electronic clock on the right counter around the 3 minute mark and the outlets in the walls are classical Victorian Mennonite.
Let's face it, I would love to be a Mennonite, the church is your bank for loans, and you basically don't have to pay taxes just to the church and you get to live a free live from state where they don't fuck with you because you don't contribute although you can still use the anything Johnny Taxpayer (You and I) pay for. No worrying about wasted tax dollars or political nonsense just real people with a common goal. They don't care about Transgender/Attention seekers feelings.
Rumpelforeskin All Mennonites pay taxes just like the rest of society. That non-payment of taxes is a huge misconception.
This is really good. Looking at a few more recent videos of yours and I like what I see. Subbed!
Welcome aboard! :)
May God bless you and all your families!
I love the way they live and I love how Godly they all are.
God bless you all!!!
" I have found my freedom in the Lord" ! The elder Mennonite gentleman may not have known about Bach and Beethoven but he has the wisdom of a saint... God bless them all!
Great questions, and you were very respectful. Nice to hear someone question different people with different views with such regard. Thanks!
Thanks so much, Mary! That's motivating to hear:)
I live in western Montana and see mennonites at Costco often. It is interesting to see
Like how open minded you are!
There is no prejudice or any of that kind from your side. I find that many Americans and also English people are that way, which I really like!
Many people, even young ones, are very narrow-minded as soon as they dont understand something or it's against their own believes and values.
So thanks for being cool, open-minded and easy going!
A pleasure to listen and watch!
Leyla b.
I really appreciate that, Leyla:) Thanks for the supportive words and for watching my videos.
Just like the Hutterites I love the simplicity that they live in.
I like their sense of family, it’s beautiful! When I heard their opinion on Trump, they really are detached as to what’s happening in the world.
Yeah, because they don't let their TV think for them!
They are living 1000 times better tha we are, they have peace joy and happiness, small price to pay to avoid worldly pleasures
Yes they may be happier but if they ever decide to leave their families will never speak to them again. Can you imagine having that weighing down on you everyday of your life? Like if you start to feel like you no longer agree with their beliefs you lose your family and friends and everything you’ve known.....
Thank you.
Great choir...You all sing beautifully for the Lord
GOD blessed you. 💗 Gretting form Germany
My maternal grandmother (A. Mullet) was a Mennonite from Montana.
I really love their beliefs and how they live....
I am not Mennonite but I am christian I am convicted not to go to movie and rock and roll music.
My friends says my life is boring .but I enjoy presence of god all the time and I am happier than them
Yes and I love how at 14:34 he talks about not wanting to live any other way for the enjoyment of this life and the next.
I taught at a Mennonite school during the 1995-96 school year. The Mennonites at that locale were not as traditional (some of the older ones were) and did not wear the traditional garb (but they did dress very conservatively). One ol' boy up there still worked part of his farm with horses rather than his tractors. Very nice people. For several years after teaching there, the farmers would still let me hunt upland game birds on their places. There are many groups of Mennonites throughout Montana. Might also add that there are several colonies of Huderrites in Montana as well. They too are a fascinating group of people.
Thanks for sharing. Yes, something Jethro told me was that folks often confused Mennonites and Hutterites.
I think they have a Beautiful family 💫
Nice voices. I live as a Christian and I don't listen to the news...I find no worth in news. God is ultimately in control.
Barb Welch yes but that’s no reason to not help and do your part, which is a big reason we are all here.
Yes, but actually no. Otherwise the world would be perfect if you were correct.
Yes, but actually no. If you were correct the world would be perfect. The point is we have free will and we're supposed to do the heavy lifting as us man rule the earth we do the work to make it better and closer to heaven.
The news is not news.... the saying believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see is so true, I watch the news from time to time but I watch documentaries to keep me up to date on particular events and things that are going on in the world!
Barb Welch. Ah, one professed Christian who doesn’t watch FOX news. Interesting.
Very nice!
Good people I personally spent a few years living in that community as it was starting.
The fact that you had to describe who and what Bach is should tell you they don’t miss it.
I found that to be the most surprising thing of all about them:)
Fascinating. I appreciate their openness. I find some of their beliefs very different to my own but i am intrigued and this is a great video. Trump with morals tho’.... I’m glad to be a Brit on the sidelines for this discussion 🤣
Good questions! Thank you for not twisting their answers! God bless you!
You're very welcome:) Thank you for the blessing!
Its interesting learning about my grandpas way of life i found out he was mennonite and i understand abit more why i like some of the things i do like the love of the land and living off the land helping others living a more simpler way of life.
My grandfather was not Amish or Mennonite . But did everything horse and mule powered . Lived working with him on his farm . He.lived in Missouri and I lived in Kansas we used tractors and stuff on our farm but he used horses I liked horses better lol.
@@robertmoore1123 ya some like using one over the other my grandmas side wasn't Mennonite and they had used clydsdales
I SURE WOULD LIKE TO EXPEIRIENCE AND LEARN WHAT IT S LIKE TO BE A MENNONITE , BASICALLY BECOME A MENNONITE TO SEE IF I WOULD STAY THIS WAY , GREAT VIDEO
Me too! Contacted a local church about attending this Sunday.
Psalm 92 Living Bible (TLB) Verse :3:Sing his praises, accompanied by music from the harp and lute and lyre. 4 You have done so much for me, O Lord. No wonder I am glad! I sing for joy
this beautiful family i wish i was a mennonite
Very interesting! I'm a bit confused about the electricity because they said they didn't have electricity but yet the house had electricity. You could see it in the kitchen appliances.
They did have electricity (as well as cars). Perhaps you heard Jethro speak of his Amish upbringing?
The Mennonites do implement modern technology (at least this group does), but they limit its functionality. For example, they have cell phones but not smartphones. And they have internet, but is has a filter blocking all social media. They try to have the conveniences of modern tech without the potential for spiritual pitfalls of doing so.
Thanks for commenting!
@@ThePeriphery Thank you for clarifying! Very interesting to see how they live.
I could honestly say I'm jealous.
This is great.
The Bible and Heaven have musical instruments
Are we in heaven?
I respect the way they live. I would enjoy this type of living but I need my children to comprehend modernized society and overcome it.
Example- today my children baked instead of watching someone on TellUvision baking.
The issue is if they don't over come it they could get sucked into its cultural wickedness
They got real baked
Wow. These guys need to listen to a beautiful Mennonite family singers Daniel and Emma Lynn Glick. They Make some Beautiful Godly music. There are many Mennonite singers on UA-cam that are Amazingly gifted in their singing and music. 💞
Great morals,,needs to be more of it
thank u mennonites God bless u.. i know you believe in Holiness thats why u r like that no instruments, no dancing , no drinking wine maybe ..i hope...im a baptist...here in the philippines
What a beautiful story! I disatach myself from the world as well.. No TV, music, friends, nor family! Just the hope of a eternal inheritance with JESUS... God Blesses them.. I'd fit right in.. I never voted either! Bless God! Amen
Our Lord is surely pleased with souls so righteous..
thank-you for opening your door(s) to me
As a Sabbath keeping christian and an ex-serviceman i know that wars keep the big bankers rich.
I do not watch television and listen to the news and watch christian programs on the internet and you tube.
Jesus is coming shortly with fire as we are living in the times of Noah.
God bless your beautiful family.
Darryl. Campbell's Creek , Victoria. Australia.
Nice to see.
They all seem like such wonderful people!
I'm confused. he says they don't have electricity yet they have a refrigerator, microwave, stove, etc. I even saw a light fixture over the table?
They can have power, a car, even a computer. They're just limited in what they do with each--no secular music, no UA-cam (ironically), etc.
bless you good people...who indeed feeds you this info ?
We love the Amish and Mennonites!
JESUS bless you Brother and Sister nd Happy New Year
No musical instruments! Why not , i believe God loves good music !
God has given them beautiful voices as instruments. Instrumental music will only hide their voices. Good Acapella singing is better than singing with instruments any day.
On that same sentiment: “ God” has given humanity the ability to develop and play a whole array of beautiful instruments, making sounds that the human voice is not capable of. Acapella singing is just one form (can indeed be beautiful) of a whole world-wide scala of music.
maybe becasue of their tradions
God is the flying spaghetti monster, and it loves everyone equally
Even if you use instruments;)
RAmen
Thank you for this is video. What a beautiful fanily ♥ Praise God for them x
Faith is still to be found ^¥^
You are very wise to separate yourself from the world- it is becoming so wicked, it is unbelievable. I'm glad you sing hymns in Praise of the Lord :)
Within Mennonites there are some differences, some do use musical instruments and some other differences.
Love these Godly families!
Very beautifull
Thank goodness for modern amenities. And health access
Jesus tells us to be IN this world but not of this world.
We are called to be a bright light.
Man, it's crazy. I mean, I do respect, but Im not minimum able to understand it. Cheers to everyone. Salutes my friend.
Haha. Sometimes it's good to encounter that which we don't understand. It stretches the mind:)
They may not know it but they are probably familiar with some of the works of the classical composers. Bach wrote many German Christian cantatas. Few are sung in English, but in those churches where instrumentals are allowed Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze and Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring is played and there's a good chance they've at least heard them. These Mennonites probably sing a few songs written by the classical composers in their churches but they probably don't know that they do. The Mennonites are German after all and a lot of hymns have German melodies. Beethoven wrote the melody which was used for Joyful Joyful which is a common hymn in traditional churches. Originally it was called "Ode to Joy." Handel of course wrote the Messiah which includes the Hallelujah Chorus and For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given. Those are usually sung around Christmas time. So I have a feeling if particular pieces were played or sung for them they'd know them.
They actually communicate with God and each other ..i admire these plain people
As a Muslim , I admire the way these people are living
O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people [Quran 5:51]
Allah of the Quran is Satan
Gosh, I wish they were my neighbors...they seem so down to earth, fun and kind...
Don't have electricity in the house yet there's a radio sat right next to him, lights on in the kitchen and a massive fridge. I admire their way of life, truelly I do but have I missed something here?
They're Mennonites, not Amish:)
Wonderful family; that being said from what I’ve known of them and from talking they are generally far from uninformed. They may not be up to the minute latest details but they know what’s going on in the world. Many use technology for business even if they don’t have tv ect in their homes, also missionary work is big for Mennonites. As someone who shares many of their beliefs I believe it’s good to be somewhat detached, people have must lower stress levels and better health to a degree. Modesty and simplicity does wonders for our family and world, I’m very happy for them. The voting can be disputed somewhat since they are exempt from military duty. I’ve only participated in one election and it was this past one. I accept their choice, it won’t change the end, Believers know how it will end and are therefore at peace.
What missionary work please?
I wish there were more Amish and Mennonite communities who would be open and share their lives and lifestyle. I understand this opens them to criticism etc but in my opinion would be outweighed by people not in their community to see it possible, and wonderful, to live in love, family, and hand in hand with one another and God. Love or hate their beliefs, these are happy, wholesome, and loving people that live in a way many others find “impossible”. I envy them very much.
Happy, wholesale, loving?
Little more than an average American but Mennonites are a whole are still too worldly.
Me too. We have got take courage and contact them. I found some who have welcomed me to church this weekend but I called and asked and the lady was very sweet to talk to me.
