The Maritime Security Dialogue brings together CSIS and USNI, two of the nation's most respected non-partisan institutions. The series is intended to highlight the particular challenges facing the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, from national level maritime policy to naval concept development and program design. Given budgetary challenges, technological opportunities, and ongoing strategic adjustments, the nature and employment of U.S. maritime forces are likely to undergo significant change over the next ten to fifteen years. The Maritime Security Dialogue provides an unmatched forum for discussion of these issues with the nation's maritime leaders.

i am excited to hear about the replacement of the steam propulsion to electronic. I'm surprised how openly the Navy speaks about it.

Submarines are our enduring advantage that we hold over our adversaries, dare I say enemies. And these new investments are just gonna widen that gap. I say invest even more in submarines, take the money from aircraft carrier and build SSN(X) in 2030, invest heavily in next generation strike capability (replacement for Tomahawk and next gen anti ship missile) which should be at least supersonic if not hypersonic. Go guys go...
great video! I am very glad to see the navy seems to be on the ball when it comes to SSBNs. in my opinion the SSBN is probably the most important weapon the USA has! and I am very very happy to see that we are moving to electric motors that will help to reduce a subs noise.
Electric Boats is the name of a ship builder.

No one who can think, would credit survival of the Cold War to anything but Ballistic Submarines as a deterrent. Totally agree to not have that deterrent is to gamble without real prospect of winning.

Can the Ohio fleet be handed over, as each are decommissioned, to a group like the NSF for use as research platforms?
This could help keep retired submariners employed, keep the boat works supply chain running, and the boats can revolutionize many aspects of global biogeochemical research.
With this change in mission, the launch tubes can be used as biofuel storage tanks and the reactors can be replaced with a diesels. The subs would be more limited yet would be good enough for research.
I believe saving the Ohio fleet, by converting them to research vessels, is a once in a generation opportunity for the marine sciences and would keep these great boats and submariners working; working for science.
Possibly, the Ohio reactors can be used in the new boats. If so, that could take a big bite out of the new boat cost.
Please do everything that can be done to max out the use of the Ohio fleet; science needs them.
While I'm at it, I would also like the retired USS JFK used for science as well. Scraping of our old carriers should be stopped. Those carriers can be support vessels for the science sub fleet and space launch pads.
No discussion of remote piloted vehicles underwater, after all they were pioneered by Naval development, as far as I know the wire guided torpedo was a Norwegian development circa 1940

I believe any aquatic submarines etc is or useless due for 1 main reason I would never put any of my brothers and especially sisters in danger as you know what the waters hold.

Again not one word from the moderators, speakers or public about diesel-electric submarine, or to better say it - the lack of. I think that would be a great advantage to our shrinking fleet..
vegass04 dispite been too stealth, conv sub are very slow and have a little range. Brasil is moving from conventional subs to nuclear tactical subs
Diesel-electric submarines are more defensively focused, because of their lower speeds and range. Not the sort of boat you'd want as a nation that has lots of interests across the world's oceans. With that said, technology is moving forward very quickly and there's no telling what diesel-electric/air independent submarines can do in the future.
