    I just replaced an exploded radiator hose (that hard plastic one above the radiator) and noticed a shit load of caked on old oil around the valve cover. Sure enough, when i added more oil (it was almost bone dry) i watched it bead up around the bolts that hold the valve cover one. Time to change the gasket... Thanks for putting this video up, should make it easy

    sorry for the late reply you probably already figured it out, but the oil down in the well will cause the misfire, clean it out, fix the v/c leak, and good idea to replace at least that plug too. If you see the cover is cracked it is just best to replace the plastic cover.

    Note a Usual cause for leaking around the valve cover: The PCV hose on the backside of the engine collapses over time/heat/cold, almost assured to happen eventually on every one of these cars. And of course the front side/valve itself. So fix the cause as well as the symptom.

    I agree only clean the cam lobes with the debri on them, there will be debri no matter how clean the cover is before removal. Also oil on cam lobes is a good idea but not required! Think about it the oil is already soaked into the metal, we are not cleaning the lobes with brake clean also. Think about it you leave your car at the airport for 30 days, do you pull valve cover and squirt some oil or do you start car and let it idle under light load for a few minutes?

      hello ford tech. I dont know anything about cars hardly. I am smart enough to figure a lot of this out as I go. I have a ford escort year 2000. Its leaking oil the engine looks the same to me. I notice they over tightened the valve cover gasket. its all smooshed out one side and there looks like a cut where a small amount of oil coming from. I put a quart of oil in the car 2 days ago and it looks as though I've lost about half. I'm assuming the gasket needs replaced. its on the right side and I lifted the car just now and noticed there is way more oil underneath where you cant see from the top. the filter seems to be on right but that could be deceiving. I remember changing the oil with my brothers dad when I was little and him telling me not to over tighten it. could that break something? we had our oil changed by walmart about 2 or so weeks before this became noticable. and its getting worse. I imagine since it seems to be coming from down below that there may be a gasket causing this nonsense. please help
      So my main question is, is there a gasket underneath that could be causing this "massive" leak or is it just the cover gasket like in this video? given there is way more oil underneath than around the seal up top.

    you will smell the hot oil smell for awhile a good engine block degreasing is in order. You can change just one wire, but hard to find seperate. If you are changing spark plugs change all 4. Was it missing before v/c replacement? What cylinder? Likely a coil pack. Flip it over and check for cracks.

    I am glad you did a video. I just wondered if they hid some bolts or the bolts don't come out of the head without breaking...mine leaks so bad, you smell hot oil in the car...after I weld on the rocker panel, and ebrake fix, then this is next...hope to pass inspection soon...
    Thanks this was very helpful.

  • @manuelruen

    Very good video...I actually needed to use this to replace my gasket. One thing though the hose on the back of the valve cover is not the pcv valve. That is hooked up to a metal line almost behind the header and heat shield.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  10 років тому

      Yes it is the pcv hose as stated in the video. It is just one part of the positive crankcase ventilation system.

    • @manuelruen
      @manuelruen 10 років тому

      FordTechMakuloco
      I'm not sure what you mean...because I replaced my pcv while doing this also. Yes I know that is part of the ventilation system for the crankcase. I also have this vent on the back of my valve cover, but pcv valves are usually plugged right into the block and usually in some kind of aluminum tubing. I have the same setup as you even though I have a contour. I had to take the heat shield off to access the bolt that holds the pcv valve into the block.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  10 років тому +2

      Manuel Ruen Pcv valves are almost exclusively in the valve cover itself. On these they plug into a crankcase oil separator under the exhaust manifold then the to the intake manifold to be burned. The fresh air inlet for the pcv system is the hose I take off on the valve cover that provides fresh air to the crankcase which mixes with the blow by gases and oil vapors and is sucked back out again by manifold vacuum attached to the pcv valve. So yes it is a positive crankcase ventilation hose.

    Let me rephrase that, car was fine, I worked on it, new valve cover gasket per this great video, and then, MISFIRE light came on about 5-6 miles from the house... got it home, came back, read more here, and then checked for oil, cleared the oil and now car is fine...well, ABS light is on after I replaced the front rotors, pads...and one rear wheel cylinder and e-brake cable end...but it will pass inspection even with the light on I heard.

      +FordTechMakuloco I have a question. I currently own this vintage engine in a 2.5L set up by Mazda. I currently have a small leak in the back of the engine. I placed a small camera to see if I had any oil leaks, but it is just the regular dirt. Where in the back engine could oil leak aside from the rear valve cover? I checked also by the block and there aren't any oil build ups. The oil leak trickles on the passenger side, travels through that area leading to the control arm. I just can't see the origin of the leak.
      Thanks in advance.

    I started this project on my '08 Focus. Everything was going smoothly until I tried to unplug the cylinder head temp sensor. I wasn't sure how to unplug it and got too aggressive and broke it off. So now I'm waiting on a sensor to come in. So what's the torque specs on this cylinder head temp sensor when I go to install the new one? What other things are different on '08 and up models with this project? I'm also going to attempt to replace the thermostat housing while I'm waiting on the sensor. Any tips on this job? Tools needed? And torque on the 3 bolts? Thanks for the help!! You've saved me some $$$ already!!

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  10 років тому

      Clay McClanahan CHT is 106 in lbs and the thermostat housing bolts are 89 in lbs. I would not touch the thermostat housing if you don't have to they never fail on these. They are a real pain and must be done from underneath with a/c compressor unbolted and bungee off to the side. There are a few things different on these namely the torque sequence. I can send the procedure for the v/c gasket to your email.

    • @claymcclanahan9191
      @claymcclanahan9191 9 років тому

      Sorry for taking so long to respond. I replaced the CHT and my check engine light has disappeared. It has not come back on since replacing it. The check engine light had been on for a while. So evidently my aggressiveness unplugging the sensor was not really the issue. It was already bad or broke. As far as the valve cover gasket, I read elsewhere to start in the center and go in a circular pattern to the outside bolts. I snugged them down but didn't over tighten.

      Yes, you do need RTV. Ford states to use the RTV at the 4 points where the valve cover gasket meets the cam carriers front and rear where they make the transition on the cylinder head from the flat machined surface to the arched shape of the cam carrier bearings.

    do you have to change the oil after doing a gasket swap for the the zetec, I just bought a focus and the earlier owner chainged to oil a week before I bought the car

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 років тому

      ToadHonda Snapper If it is leaking and not causing a misfire I would wait till the next oil change, do the gasket, pour a quart of oil over the valve train and let it drain into the pan, finish valve cover job. Then do a oil and filter change immediately after with extended drain.

    • @kodypagel9167
      @kodypagel9167 9 років тому

      would it hurt if I just put oil over vavle train when I change the gasket, cuz im already putting enough money into gasket plugs and wires

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  9 років тому

      ToadHonda Snapper That will work too if funds are cheap. Point is to get any possible debri down to the pan and away from the valvetrain from there the oil will be sucked up and cleaned by the filter.

    What is break clean? The spray you used?

      Yes it is a degreaser for brake works that is made to not leave a residue behind. Very good for final cleaning of surfaces before sealing them up. Any Auto Parts store has it.

    You must save considerable time by not removing the timing belt.

    The reason it's not called a rocker cover gasket is because rockers/push rods are not used anymore. All engines are overhead cam & I'm from the UK too.

    Am I the only person who saw him pull the plug boots out by the wire section?

      Yes I did as I was doing a full tune up including plugs, wires and ignition coil for a crack. I explain all of that in the video.

      I was hoping.
      I chased a funny misfire for two years until it just ran on three cylinders. One of the wires literally fell out of the boot the next time I took it off. I haven't pulled on wires since then.
