If you like that, it's too bad you missed the likes of Epica or Within Temptation back in that same time period. Go do a search for "Cry for the Moon" then come back and thank me. =D
One of the most underrated, alternative rock ballads of any decade. I remember idiot DJs in Colorado Springs panning this song, and wondering ‘what she was doing’ with this direction. What she was doing…becoming an immortal Rock Goddess.
2024 and still this song resonates since the first day I heard it. Been single for all of my 50 years and when she sings, "this is not allowed, you're uninvited," I totally feel that line. Such a fantastic and honest song!
Ditto. And the thing is, I knew at the time that it was that good and saw when it was ending. There towards the end, I really made a conscious effort to really enjoy it because I knew it probably wouldn't happen again in my life.
@@deanroddey2881 This sounds a little crazy but growing up in the 80s and 90s, it sometimes felt that everything was for Me! The movies, the music, the style, attitude, all of it!!
Definitely. This song transcends cultural perspectives of courtship and romance. Lyrically, it's like she's speaking from the perspective of this deeper, more primal, boundary-setting aspect of the female psyche. Like she's channeling her inner animus or something. It's incredibly witchy.
By far one of the most memorable live performance not only did she kill it the orchestra behind her killed it also!! ! I watched this live on MTV and it Is one of my favorite live concert performances!!! 2k24 still jam to this one!! RAW talent!!❤
Such an impressive performance, and while not only one of the best ever at the Grammy's, but one of her best. I read where Madonna was in the crowd that night, and was so impressed with Alanis's performance that she gave her a 55 thousand dollar watch.
That really surprises me about Madonna. She doesn't seem like the giving type? I guess I was wrong to judge her. Dang Madonna! I hope I can impress you one day..lol..
Hard to imagine that I didn’t fully appreciate this song until I saw this live performance. Not only is this a masterpiece song, it is absolutely one of the greatest single-song live performances of all time, along with Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers in 1965 (on The Andy Williams Show) and The Sound of Silence by Disturbed (on Conan in 2016). Masterful performance of an incredible song!
There's a tenebrous mysticism that shrouds this whole performance, like a mesmeric ritual that conjures something deliciously forbidden and profane. What an enchantress.
Wait..this song came out around 1998? I know it was sometime in the late 90's. Then she sings this live at Grammy's..as far as I can tell..no lip syncing..when did she sing this live? Absolutely incredible..if it's live. No auto tune..it sounds exactly like the album version. I'm stunned..
Projecting falsetto with that kind of depth is incredibly difficult. I sang professionally as a saprano when i was younger. Im a little too young to have been into Alanis so i just got into it now. This is really very impressive. Being able to do this without harming your voice takes a LOT of work and talent.
She wouldn’t be She doesn’t have a huge fake ass and fake tits and she doesn’t use computers to create her voice She would struggle today because she wasn’t willing to sacrifice ANY of her passion to just please the eye Although she did that as well but mostly she is sexy because of her power on stage and her dedication
I saw this last night live in CA. I sadly forgot about this song - and it's probably her best. Lyrics and music are haunting, and the "over" orchestration is PERFECT for the message - it's frankly brilliant, a genius writing. Thank you, Alanis.
THE MOST powerful performance I've ever seen... The precision is razor sharp and to know she sounds just like she does on her music cds. (BOWS in Respect)
I dedicated this song to a man who’s 15 years younger than me, he came out of nowhere to swept me off my feet 😭 I know people are going to judge me, but he’s so dreamy ❤
I love how many different forms of music were introducing orchestral elements into their music in the late 90's. It was this perfect balance of classical sophistication and slick, cutting edge artistic musical expression. It really was an incredibly beautiful time to be a human. We were pop culturally peaking into this collective celebration of our shared humanity. You could really feel it everywhere.
I literally just found this song while watching Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu…I was in my 20’s when she came out but I’ve always LOVED her voice!! MASTERPIECE❤❤❤
Uninvited" Like anyone would be I am flattered by your fascination with me Like any hot-blooded woman I have simply wanted an object to crave But you, you're not allowed You're uninvited An unfortunate slight Must be strangely exciting To watch the stoic squirm Must be somewhat heartening To watch shepherd meet shepherd But you, you're not allowed You're uninvited An unfortunate slight Like any uncharted territory I must seem greatly intriguing You speak of my love like You have experienced love like mine before But this is not allowed You're uninvited An unfortunate slight I don't think you unworthy But I need a moment to deliberate
Thank you so much for the lyrics❤❤I was a bit tripped up on that “unfortunate slight” line but this song is AMAZING!! It’ll never get old or dull…THANK YOU!❤❤
This was right in the middle of grunge and I was and still am a huge fan of that era of music. I have to admit because of my young age at the time guessing early to mid 20s I let her music sort of slip bye. I was hearing her but I wouldn’t admit it! Took me until my mid 30’s to finally embrace how great of an artist she truly is. I was a complete dumbass! She is and will always be on my playlist. My bad man.. my bad.

When my child asks what my favorite song is...this is it. Play it at my burial, tell everyone I lived a full life. I had music that filled my soul!
The darkness inside of this song is extremely remarkable. It's hauntingly beautiful.
...and beautifully haunting...
Yes!! Exactly the feeling it just gave me while watching it
Such a tune!
pure talent....
2024 still listening
Me too!
51 years old here and this song still gives me chills!
I'm a bit older and totally with you!!!
Me too
I'm also 51 and still getting chills.
Same here, turned 51 in August ‼️
I forgot that the Grammy`s were good at one time.
What you said. 😂
She was the BEST performance that year. Everyone else sucked
This woman straight up singing with a whole orchestra and band is next level confidence!
I am 38, I remember when She First started, I always felt She made jamming out to music to yourself or in concert cool again!
If you like that, it's too bad you missed the likes of Epica or Within Temptation back in that same time period. Go do a search for "Cry for the Moon" then come back and thank me. =D
Those people are extremely fortunate to have witnessed that unparalleled experience.
Winner of Best Rock Song of 1999.
If you're searching out this song 25 years later....
yes it was that good of a song.
She sings with such passion as tho she feels each word projecting that beautifully to us, so dramatic love this
She *owns* that stage. She stands and delivers. Also, she looks so beautiful and elegant
She fucking killed this, what a performance
One of the most underrated, alternative rock ballads of any decade.

She sings total rejection like an angel.
No Auto tone singing no wearing horrible sexy outfits just a classy 💯 woman and can sing like an angel a real musician hand's down
She looks so beautiful in that dress !
Heh, ever see her music before the manager was like, 'let's go rock'? lol
She is in another class altogether. It's a work of art. Art doesn't have anything to do with many performances of our day.
She’s amazing one of a kind
Exactly, she doesn't feel the need to be half naked and shaking every part of her body bc her singing and songwriting is so good!
I love this song! Those strings and all that dramatic drapery, this is one of the best Grammy performances of all time.
what year was this
@@lizaleeshealth1999 I believe.

a fuckin masterpiece. unmatched lyrics and vocals and not even her best version of this
One of the best songs ever written. Fabulous lyrics. Angelic voice

This isn't a song..... it's an incantation......a thousand years ago Alanis would have been a high priestess :)
Has almost an ancient Egyptian feel to it, right?!?!
Why a thousand years ago? She IS a priestess

@@arletteu1347 Correction, Alanis is GOD, as revealed in 1999.
My boy on the piano was gettin it.
Definitely understood the assignment
Holy Crap, that was incredible. Nothing against Taylor Swift, she is awesome but there is no comparison.
Taylor has nothing on Alanis....... she is in her own world!!! She is just amazing
That woman can *sing!* And she doesn't sound like *anybody* else.

This was a masterpiece then and it’s still a masterpiece now.
Well done Alanis! Pure perfection!
A beautiful song with mysteric dark overtones.
When music was musical. What a set of pipes!
Its like she’s asking nicely the first time and she gets louder the more she has to ask❤️ this song is epic
The definition of a perfect performance of a perfect song. It leaves me speechless every time! ❤
Casting her as God, in dogma was brilliant. Alanis is amazing at everything she touched. My 20s in the 90s was perfect.
I just told my wife about that, she's never seen *any* of the Jay and Silent Bob movies *yet* 😔
Has to be one of the greatest Grammy performances ever. Well. At least when people actually cared about the grammys
This person had an album that every song could have been a top 100 for that year. Something strange about her I cant pinpoint.
Oh yes genius
That was awe striking..😱
Still gives me chills. Her voice, the orchestra.... 🔥🥰🥰
Such an underrated performance. It's so powerful
Such an impressive performance, and while not only one of the best ever at the Grammy's, but one of her best. I read where Madonna was in the crowd that night, and was so impressed with Alanis's performance that she gave her a 55 thousand dollar watch.
Madonna made shit ton of money of Alannis. her record label was only one to give Alannis a shot
That’s impressive, especially since Madonna frequently is on the list of worst tippers.
That really surprises me about Madonna. She doesn't seem like the giving type? I guess I was wrong to judge her. Dang Madonna! I hope I can impress you one day..lol..

Some songs only come alive when you see it live. Not that they are bad before but it just adds the feeling.
I think that's subjective. I could say 'Anytime you need a friend' in Tokyo by Mariah is one of the greatest performances of all time.
Try Ghost Love Score by Nightwish at Wacken Open Air 2013, you have never seen anything like this I promise
I remember this taking my fn breath away and NOBODY talking about it
This is so beautiful. She’s singing this in damn near perfect pitch! I read somewhere she has it. This is wonderful!
Still can’t understand how this song wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, let alone win in 1998. It’s one of the best songs written for a movie ever.
Don't you mean grammy? Oscar's are for movies and what not...
@@mrshaneobuenosnodgrass3328 It was written for the movie City of Angels so it was eligable for an Oscar, just wasn't nominated for some reason.
@@shimma25 Not only that, but it DID win a Grammy. Two, if I remember correctly.
I hope she got a standing ovation for this performance. The range of her voice and how the orchestra complimented it so well was other-worldy.

This popped into my head today out of nowhere. Had to give it an honorary listen. So haunting...
