When bored they'll nibble on grass. But they will go after seeds a lot too. They will go after bugs first, then seeds or small roots, and then lastly plant matter. This is also why people can use them for pest management on farms in place of chemical spraying.

Here they are eating seeds from last year's flowers. We leave the garden's "messy" for them over the winter.
