  • The Rideau Canal was built out of military necessity. It was widely believed that the Americans and their new country of the United States would try to invade and take Canada for their own. Canada's weakest link was the route between the two major cities of Kingston and Montréal - bordered directly by New York State, it was not considered a safe route for the British Navy.
So, they built a canal - and to build that canal, they built a town - and some 200 years later that town has become the City of Ottawa, Canada's Capital!
But then that invasion never happened. So what of the canal?
Today it's a favourite travel destination for boaters - and a world-record-holding skating rink. Who knew!

Thank you!! Yeah.. the Rideau falls are impressive! But leave it to Ottawa to hide a waterfall in its downtown core and pretend it's not even there 😂😂
