    Seriously, people who hike with $2,000+ worth of stuff on their back don’t want to pay ~$30 a year for Gaia which is arguably the most versatile application with the most comprehensive trail display. They also show wildfire and smoke (handy for summer hiking out west). I gladly pay my Gaia fee and my ZOLEO subscription to minimize my backpacking hassles.

    $30 a year says the guy with the arcterx jacket.

    Peak visor has been around forever and I love it for identifying mountains near me, really cool. Also Relive is dope if you’re the type that that tracks your hikes

    I like Avanza Maps but it doesn’t have comments. If you just want GPS enabled maps, it’s a winner.

      Avenza is the BEST if you use waypoints well! You can navigate to them, and it’ll tell you a pretty accurate ETA until you reach it. I like to drop them at water sources/favorite rest places/etc.

    Is there a way to determine the distance from point A to point B on AllTrails that I am unfamiliar with?
    In other words, how do I determine based on the map and my current location, how can determine how far it is to water, campsites etc?
    Thanks.

    Garmin Explore is the app for the newer InReach devices as well. Any thoughts on OnX Backcountry? I've not used it, but looks useful. Also, Avenza maps are useful in certain areas, especially Linville Gorge area. Good overview

      Pretty certain OnX bought the parent company for Hiking Project and have incorporated the data into Backcountry.

    Hiking Project for the WIN! Whoo hoo! I love that app too

    The map interface in Hiking Project is fantastic and so much better than All Trails for exploring. However I like how All Trails displays the trail info.

    Gaia GPS has added a cell phone coverage layer (specific to your individual carrier) as another map overlay. Pretty cool for planning purposes.

    Hey Kevin, you forgot about Garmin Explore! That's the true mapping app that works with your watch. I really don't use any other apps now because it has really improved.

    Google maps is great when on trail and you want to be picked up or for ordering food to be delivered on trail. The Garmin mini 2 uses explore. I also use it for my Garmin watches.

    Gaia is free, that's the one I mostly use. There are just some "premium" features that aren't available with the free version. You can still build routes, see where you are on the map, see elevation etc. using the free version 😀

    • @brianadventures9622
      @brianadventures9622 2 роки тому

      Unfortunately you need the paid version to download and safe maps for offline use. Typically in low cell service areas it's better use of your battery to run in airplane mode. If you use it 3 to 4 times a year it's worth the $40.

    • @nickrambles
      @nickrambles 2 роки тому

      @@brianadventures9622 I dunno, offline works fine for me. I can see the maps, my location saved routes, way points etc while in airplane mode. I just can't see certain topo maps and other features. But the features necessary to backpack and route find with are in the free version.

      I received the first year or two free when I first got Gaia. Which was brilliant, because i got hooked on it and love it. Now I pay for the premium each year

    I want to know if any of those work in Canada (other than alltrails, google, Garmin ) because if they don't they're pretty much just bloatware to me

    At this point, just stay in the city! I don't want anyone to get lost and die, but if every aspect of your "adventure" is charted, mapped, monitored, cataloged and accounted for, just go to a local park!
    Plus, if you're not used to the app you're talking about either don't mention it or do some quick research. It's not a live video!

    The Hiking Project seems terrible as it only has perhaps 1/1000 of the trails available compared to other apps... at least for Europe.

      Avenza is by far the best for navigation. Then it's guthook for information. And Avenza is a must have in the Gorge for sure.

    Gross! Alltrails is the worst! Consistently the info on Alltrails is wrong.
    I’m a huge fan of CalTopo. If you’re mapping your own routes, researching, creating waypoints, etc, it’s the most robust I’ve seen. The desktop to app compatibility is very seamless.

      AllTrails has been great for me in the MidAtlantic area of the US. I’ve seen lots of internet hate for it. It must work better in some places than others.

      ...unless you live/hike out west. There is zero cell coverage in 99.99% of the areas I hike in UT, which makes carrying a Garmin InReach an absolute must!
