  • BTS details the troubled production of one of Kurosawa's greatest achievements, a mythic and primal epic of feudal Japan that became a virtual template for latter-day action films, influencing western filmmakers for decades. Kurosawa professed himself disappointed with the popular 1960 Americanized remake The Magnificent Seven, which spawned numerous sequels and ripoffs. Screenwriter John Sayles blasted the concept into outer space in 1980 for Battle Beyond the Stars.

So much more to this film than the Magnificent 7. More character development and atmosphere.

One of true great masterpieces. Released the same year in Japan along with Gojira (Godzilla).

For any serious film viewer this is the Kurasawa movie to see. For one not so serious Hidden Fortress is a great start. This film is optimistic and humanistic even though it's sad and cynical. Beautiful to watch impressive even for an amateur...it's obvious genius st work. MR smith is great to listen to also.

I didn't even realize that those Samurai killed had been all killed by guns. Interesting.

If Citizen Kane isn't the best film ever made, this one certainly is.

Can someone please explain how the characters are complex? I watched it and liked it but it feels like so much went over my head.

The template for what would become the basis of the Western genre, after the Audie Murphy sing a long get long ride along films.

most people, incuding the presenter, fail to understand where kurosawa is coming from in relation to the samurai class. his view is not a romantic one. in fact, he was never really regarded that highly in japan because he represented a critical view on the samurai. remember, ronin have little honor. that's why seven samurai is great. secondly that samurai were to help and represent common people like that is a critical view on true honor.

    And, apparently, off-screen as well.
