Correction: you can't get a +3 on Survival; I think that you were applying the modifiers from Enlistment. Survival is a +2 modifier if you have the single qualifying statistic. And I think there were a couple errors on the benefits table. EDIT: Also, I loved the video! One of my favorite games.
Man, I wish I had this video 40 years ago to share with my Traveler group when I first started a campaign in the Solomani Empire 😁 Btw we are still playing and while looking at some online maps, this video popped up in as a recommendation. Cheers
The ENTIRE "random character creation" idea is VERY 'Old School'. D&D, even AD&D 1st ed, Gamma World and Traveller were all that way. DCC and MCC carry on the tradition (Dungeon/Mutant Crawl Classics). I love it myself.
I was rolling an M2e Traveller character yesterday and the random rolls really did create a fantastic narrative of a smart street urchin from the Belt who was taken in by a kindly cop, got a scholarship to law school, became an undercover detective with an impressive record of convictions, and retired to life as a private investigator. I didn't have a plan for any of that, the die rolls spoke for themselves basically.
Great video and wow! - what a solid character. If I hadn't watched with my own eyes I would have thought you had cheated! I need one of those dice roll randomisers; my "trusty" physical dice can never replicate such solid rolls... The purpose of your vid is, of course, tuition but it also the to point how QUICK and easy Traveller character gen can be which for the modern gamer seems to be an important consideration. I get that. We don't have those endless summer days of our teenage years anymore (or at least I don't) and the solution seems to be streamlined character generation or - and this is something I am rather resistant to - pre-generated characters. This is a topic of conversation that may be more relevant when you discuss CoC (where they are everywhere) or, if you have a strong opinion of your own, maybe a whole video to themselves. They are prevalent throughout gaming. It is no longer just a tournament / convention scenario phenomenon. I do not own any of the Mongoose individual adventures. Do they possess pre-gens? I'm not sure they do - I have Drinax, so will check that but if Mongoose don't use them they are one of the few. Good for them. I am not sure the pros of pre-gens out - weigh the cons and would love to discuss that with you. Another great vid.
I really enjoyed this walkthrough I've been taking an interest into getting back into Traveller (however unlikely it is that I'll find a group). Seems that Army would be an auto-enlist if it's 5+ and you have a DM of +3. Navy Captain is equivalent to an Army Colonel. I love the "rear echeleon... individual" part. :D
IIRC there's some other Traveller version (or hell maybe a house rule) where a natural 2 is an auto-fail on the enlistment roll. But you're right, in this case that roll is unfailable.
Wow, watching this made me want to not look at furniture with my wife tomorrow and play Traveller with the character you created instead. But, I know better...
The problem with Traveller’s creation system for Characters in today’s world (Which is the world that matters) is that the player shouldn’t be allowed to just sit and crank that out. It should be done with the game master. And the game master should then be able to take that and provide definitions for like what a six social means in the campaign he’s running and determine what that means for the players character background.
I believe Traveller has always encourage doing the character creation with your DM a fellow players. Not only to give worldbuilding tips, locations and stuff but also to create links between players (giving both players a skill to choose from if they have met each other in a term) So session 0 is going to be an rpg session of it's own.

Yeah, I would definitely like more of these!
Great walkthrough!
Thanks, this an excellent explanation of Traveller character creation.

Yes please, would love to see more.
Neat.
I'm new to classic traveller.
Most of my experience / knowledge is from Modiphius Traveller.
The description of an air raft just makes me picture a landspeeder from Star Wars
That's a good image
And the Mule from Firefly.
Very entertaining. Takes me back to my referee days.
This was great. Keep going. Thanks.
Sounds like you created an Electronic Warfare specialist

Classic Traveller actually talks about playing solitaire. 🙂

A tremendous opportunity to look at furniture to play Traveller on!
Thanks!
Thanks so much for your support!
Great vid! Thanks! :D
Requesting the 3.X d20 OGL version of Traveller character creation. It's so weird!
Until you add books 4-7. :) (Mercenary, High Guard, Scouts and Merchant Princes.) Then character creation is based on individual years.
