This twelve-minute sales film was produced for Chevrolet in 1954 by the Jam Handy Organization to show the changes in car purchasing since WWII. It features William " Bill " Frawley from the I Love Lucy TV show.
Your Chevrolet dealer presents, “Shopping Around”. The movie opens with words rolling up the screen: “Successful selling today is largely a matter of point of view. Salesmen can learn points of selling techniques and memorize ways to overcome objections. But without the understanding that a selling situation is primarily a human situation, sales techniques lose much of their effectiveness. Too often a sale is lost today because this matter of human relationship is forgotten or overlooked. It is to remind all of us that successful selling is always done on the human level of mutual interest and understanding that this picture has been developed.” The purpose of this movie is to show how shopping trends have changed and that the consumer is in greater control of his purchasing power than in times past. Another purpose is to demonstrate the bad selling habits of immoral or poorly trained salespersons and then juxtapose them against the selling habits of those working at Chevrolet - salespeople who put the customer first. The movie opens in a bus station with two women sitting on a bench 1:05. A woman is taking a survey and approaches a man and they talk 1:33. The man proceeds to answer the lady’s questions about shopping habits. He recalls a time when he tried to purchase a water softener and the movie flashes back 2:27. The movie comes back to the woman taking the survey 3:24. The story continues and the man tells a story about buying a lawnmower. The movie flashes back 3:32. The man talks to a lazy lawnmower salesman 4:00. The movie flashes back again to the survey lady 4:18. The movie flashes again to the man buying a refrigerator in the past - the salesman tries to get him to bid higher than the refrigerator is worth 4:25. The movie flashes back to the survey lady 4:51 and then again to the man trying to buy a television in the past. It should be noted; the actor in this film is famously, William Frawley, star of I Love Lucy. There is a tongue and cheek joke here where he points to himself and Vivian Vance on one of the TV screens. The TV salesman doesn’t recognize him 5:15. The movie flashes back to the man and woman in the bus station 6:13. The movie flashes back to the man trying to buy some power tools 6:50. The man is unhappy again and we flashback to the station where he again speaks to the survey lady, 7:41. The man walks down the street looking at storefronts 8:15. The man and the woman are back in the train station talking 8:47. The movie flashes back to the man trying to buy a car 9:15. The man is dealing with a caring salesperson who has taken the time to drive a car over to the man’s house and discuss his needs for purchasing a car 9:30. Flashback to the train station in the man and woman 10:19. The man and woman agreed by a second woman, 11:13. All 3 people smile and the movie ends, 11:35.

5:06 LOL LOVE the fact that William Frawley looked at a picture of Fred and Ethel Mertz and said "Hey, here's a mighty funny television program" Absolutely brilliant!

The '54 Chevy had a Fred Mertz's Mighty Trousers option. Came with a belt adjustable right below one's shirt pocket. Little-known fact!

The post war sellers market was several years over. Ford and Chevrolet were in a sales war at this time... the independents suffered because they couldn't compete.

I am fairly certain that same stage set was used on the I Love Lucy episode when the Mertzes visited Lucy and Ricky when they moved out to the country. Its the train station.

Fred never got much rent from Lucy so he took these side gigs for walking around money, paying his bar tabs at Hollywood nite spots

Imagine being a Chevy salesman in 1955-62! You would be doing every customer a huge favor, providing them with a dependable vehicle that was easy to maintain, and would more than hold it's original value. If you were ambitious, you could create a special order vehicle for your dealership and create a collector car of insane value! One of my neighbors has a beautiful black and chrome 57 Chevy convertible, 4-speed, with the factory fuel injected motor, the grill on those has a gold-plated Chevy moniker and fuel injection script, with silver paint on the fins for contrast. It's in incredible condition, but he doesn't drive it because he did a full restoration, then gave up because he didn't know how to install new brake lines! I could help him finish it, but I think if he really wanted to drive it, he would do what needs to be done, everything has its purpose. He's the original owner, I bet it was what he was driving when he courted his wife, and now he's a widower, he probably wouldn't feel right driving it without her. He knows I like the car, but I never bug him about it, I will take my chances with fate!

Offer to help him...he might understand that you love the car too, and maybe sell it to you. If not, you're still helping someone! 😀👍
