Another reason why the 60s was such an exceptional music decade.
Every decade’s music has it’s strengths and weaknesses, but yeah there was so much going on musically in the 60’s; soul like this, Motown, British Invasion, folk music, summer of love/hippy music, etc. And still had stars from the 50’s like Elvis, Chubby Checker and Roy Orbison still making great music.
Yeah music kind of died in late 80's maybe mid 90's.
because these singers actually had talent
Aww Sam, You Send Me. One of my all time favorites.
Lastone , awe one of my faves , too.. I didn’t know he sang that one.
My favorite too. Such a romantic song.
I love his solo version with just him and his guitar !
Sam is considered one of the best male vocals ever. I recommend everybody get his greatest hits compilation because it's such a classy well done collection of music.
I was riding in the my dad's 56 Ford convertible on September 11th 1964. We were just riding along with the top down listening to the radio. My father said "Oh my God they killed Sam Cooke." The announcement was followed by the DJ spinning Sam's hits. I think the loss of Sam Cooke is part of the American Tragedy. We would hear the details later. He was loved and appreciated by so many. I have a 400 disc CD changer every now and then Sam Cooke comes up. I'm always happy to hear from Sam. Thanks Sam..
I wept like a child.
Never heard a poor version of Bring It On Home To Me. I'm still playing it after about 55 years. Great showman was Sam.
Rick Mason Lou Rawls did the yah responses & harmony on this song.
i love Eric's "haha" best. it is a fantastic song.

My grandmother LOVED Sam Cooke! He had a smooth, soulful voice. A Change is Gonna Come is a classic! Bring It on Home to Me is my favorite!
Add in Unchained Melody. Wonderful singer!
@@sharonmowat6649 I've never heard his version. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the info!
Sam Cooke had one of the smoothest voices I have ever heard. "It's Another Saturday Night" is a favorite of mine. 👍👍
Hi Fil! Sam Cooke is a musician I have followed for years..in fact just watched a video on his life. So sorry he had to die in such a violent, unseemly way...very sad ending for such talent! His music stands the test of time! Find myself turning his songs up on the radio! He was very special to our generation! Thanks for giving us the story no matter how sordid it sounded...always two sides! Hugs my friend! Appreciate you! ✌️
Thanks Fil!!!!! Love how you pay homage to the greats!!! Love Sam Cooke!
A sad loss when Sam Cooke was shot! a true talent on stage, in the recording studio and keeping his rights to his music. thanks for this one Fil.
He was set up, Bertha and her whore did him dirty.
Sam had such a warm distinct tone to his voice.
Another genuine entertainer... And gone too soon.
Love Sam and the r&b era. You Send Me and A Change is Gonna Come really showcased his vocals. There is something about singers that have sung in gospel choirs that sets them apart from other singers. I think it's the way
they completely give themselves to the choir. I can hear/feel it even without knowing a singer's background. Hope I'm making sense. Thank you Fil.
You made sense to me, April...that was a great point!
I thought exactly the same and I don't think it's a surprise that a lot of the great singers from back in the day had gospel backgrounds. Many of those songs are performed a cappella or with minimal instrumentation, so there really is no place for a poor singer to hide. In those gospel groups, all the singers were good so you can imagine how high the bar was set for someone to sing lead (which Sam Cooke did). Even for those of us who are not particularly religious, those gospel recordings are worth checking out. I dare anyone to listen to "It Won't Be Very Long" and not be impressed by their energy and passion.
My generation.
For a much more complete look at the life of Sam Cooke and his tragic death, check out "The Two Killings Of Sam Cooke" on Netflix. This guy lived an amazing life, short as it may have been.
I watched this documentary and also another earlier one on Netflix - both are amazing and talk about a controversial murder - that is one for the books.
Love how you break down Sam Cooke, but could you do hiis song, “change is gonna come?” Such a powerful song!
Chubby checkers lives about 20 miles away... We did a job at His house out walk Chubby checkers... We started twisting .. Had a blast... He wears a wig he's about 80 y.o. i think he gets 30 grand a show works about 100 days a year... He drives on his chubby checker bus... He owns a backhoe and he was driving around working ... He a real down to earth guy.. He can twist... We had a twisting contest chubby won. So when i hear twist. And see Sam say it and does a little improvised twist in the song... Hahahaha 😄... Fun times...
Thanks professor..
I read Pavarotti once described the passaggio between good and great singers, like the difference between a Volkswagen and a Cadillac shifting gears!
Not being a vocal coach, all I can say is that Sam Cooke had an incredible velvety smooth voice. Plus he was a gifted songwriter. When he was not twistin' the night away, Sam wrote several social commentary songs, eg, Chain Gang & A Change Is Gonna Come. The latter song became an anthem for the 60s civil rights movement & is still relevant today, as seen by the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.
BTW, James Brown said that "Sam Cooke is the only man I know that can stand flat footed and kill you with one song. If I had half the voice that Sam had, I wouldn’t dance.” It is such a tragedy that Sam died the way he did. All I can say is that Sam accomplished more in 33 years than most people do in 73 years.
Sam Cooke, The Father of Soul, was Steve Perry's Idol. Steve's entire singing style was patterned after him. One of my favorite Journey songs is Steve doing Sam Cooke's "Good Times". Hear it here...ua-cam.com/video/vNUYFWJDkEY/v-deo.html. Here is Steve talking in 2018 about Sam Cooke..."I was in a ’56 Thunderbird that my mother had at the time. I was really young, maybe 10 years old. We were in the coastal town of Pismo Beach, California, where we would spend our summers occasionally. And all of a sudden this song came on the radio, and that opening line with the French horn comes on. And then Sam comes in with his opening line, “Cupid …” And I just went like, “What?” The world got really small. And I remember staring at the six-by-nine oval speaker on the dashboard of her car, and I couldn’t get out of it. I was just captivated with every single thing that I was hearing. It was tunnel vision, and tunnel listening, on that song. Sam Cooke just completely captivated me." Now, try to listen to a Journey song like "Who's Crying Now" and NOT hear Sam Cooke!...ua-cam.com/video/9meo3vazXcw/v-deo.html. So there you have it...if it had not been for Sam Cooke, Steve Perry would never have been, at least as we knew him!
Thanks, Brian Wagoner! I love catching the sound of an inspiring figure in music. My big brother brought me Sam. Ten yeads older he lat me hang out whrn listening to records. I used to sing Another Saturday Night" around the house when I was 12.
@@BOOMNERD51 Your very welcome. I was, like you, lucky enough to have a relative who loved music, and for me it was my mom. Among other things, she loved soul and R&B, and she let me listen to all of her records..... Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, James Brown, and of course the great Sam Cooke among many more. I miss record albums. Its good that they are making a comeback!
if anything rod stewart copied sam cooke's singing style more than anyone else. rod's hero as well
Wow! Good Times is Sam resurrected.
Never saw a video of him before, that graceful footwork and the way he uses the mic reminded me of Bobby Darin. I admire the straightforward way you described his tragically early and very controversial death. Very well done.
Love your analysis of Sam Cooke. He delivered a seamless performance and what a privilege for that audience.
thank you, Fil, for answering - my mail so quickly - you give off good vibrations
Thanks so much for this one, Fil!
What a beautiful voice he had, I just love Sam. His "Live at Harlem Square" was his gritty, non-pop side that made RCA very unhappy. He was a big influence for Otis Redding, who took grittiness to the nth degree. Sam's "Change is Gonna Come" might be the best of the many who have covered it (I'm torn between him and Solomon Burke).
Good evening Fil just saw and it was: Outstanding🎤👍 always. Great man and his musical gifts, Mr. Sam Cooke. Thank you and I gave a thumbs up and it was amazing your live stream, Tuesday Aug. 25th too.
Stay healthy Fil🍎🎸🤘,
Raini
His natural ease of movement is still fun to watch ..... a captivating flow of sight and sound! Thanks!
WHAT BEAUTIFUL TEETH!!!
I’m back to commend you on your analysis. That was a good demonstration of his 3 note endings. Well Done. What a mess at the end, but you took it head on and managed brilliantly to present it unflinchingly and keep his positive musical value and accomplishment clear. Well Done!
hi fil take care - you should tour america
I would love a review of something from Tina Marie. A very underated musician and talent that we lost way too soon.
Love this song, thanks for this one Fil.
Oh my gosh! 8yo and remember this on TV. Not lipsynced like most stuff back then. Thanks Fil
I was so pleased to see you react to Sam Cooke. I had requested him some time ago. My favorites by Sam are Good News, Another Saturday Night and Bring it on Home to Me. I liked that song by Sam and the Animals. But on Sam's version he has Lou Rawls singing background....Great.
I’ve been waiting for you to talk about the phenomenal Sam Cooke. Until a few years ago, I had only heard Sam’s more commercial tunes (like this one). I hadn’t heard any of his swing, the standards, his early gospel with The Soul Stirrers. I hadn’t even heard A Change Is Gonna Come. Is anyone else really disappointed with the dismal amount of visual footage of Sam? Apparently shows were often recorded over during this timeline. So so sad, as I adore this timeline ... both music and artists.... Cooke, Darin, Monro, Williams, Nat King Cole, Bobby Hatfield, The Platters ...
Love his voice and all that personality! Thank you for this.
Just to see u smile at this upbeat song makes me smile too.......
Fil you did a great job with this excellent well-rounded analysis. Thank you 🙏💜🤘
THAT MAN HAS CLASS ✊🏿
Spot on analysis.
Twistin' Makes me think of my Mom!! I never heard this version Fil. Great choice!
He had a huge talent 😢
Thanks for the analysis, Fil 🖤🤘🏽
As usual, Fil is a fantastic teacher- enthusiast. What a treat to see Sam Cooke, and to hear a Fil's expert explanation of what it was with THAT VOICE. Sam Cooke was so ahead of his time with developing means for writing and producing music so that artists would benefit. He was just scratching the surface before his untimely death.
We can all help things along by supporting concept of a membership platform for pay to artists and creators. Do it for Sam and other early day artists who got bilked, they didn’t know what they were signing.
Here’s hoping Fil himself gets Patreon or some such membership platform. Plenty of people are freeloaders, but many people would put something in that horn case if it were left open at the end of the stage.
Interesting Sam Cooke factoid....
A Change Is Gonna Come....
he wouldn’t sing it in concert, thought it was too sad, French horns and all. And......remember....
A Change Is Gonna Come was B Side. Side A was Shout, isn’t that surprising?
Ahead of his time, loved by all, sexy as hell.
(Who needs a conspiracy theory BTW, just know Sam Cooke did not have trouble landing a date...women go ga-ga and he’s been dead 50 years ! ).
Several years ago, I took a cab home from a restaurant.
The driver told me that he was Sam Cooke’s great-newphew.
It’s a small world.
Fil, your analyses are always brilliant.
Your showcasing of the "history" of music is great, not just current music or one genre. Thank you!
Great Analysis as always Fil. I think my favourite is Wonderful World 👌
Thanks for this very informative review Fil. Love Sam Cooke. Such a talented handsome man we lost way too young. RIP SAM 💗🙏🎵
OMG. He was killed the year following this performance, a man in the prime of his life. Such a shame. Thanks , Fil.
While watching Sam Cooke singing "Twistin' the Night Away" in the video, the word "engaging" was the first description that came to my mind. As always, you provided a great analysis of a talented performer. Thanks very much, Fil!
One of the best videos I've seen of sam in a long time
Your analysis of sams voice is spot on and your bio of sam is on point . I became a 30 musician because of sams influence on me as a young kid. I did have the honor of becoming friends with members of sams family over the years and they're wonderful people
Great video bro 👍
Very cool video. I heard Rod Stewart once say Sam Cooke was his biggest influence as a young performer with the way he worked the crowd and carried himself. Now I see it, great analysis. Now how about some Fats Domino?
I grew up listening to Sam Cooke records. This was a great analysis. Well done.
He had the moves and the voice and always warmed your heart and soul
Sam Cooke sings awesome gospel also. If you haven't heard it, search for it. It's beautiful. Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers.
Such a great singer.Such warmth in his voice. He could make you feel sad and happy all at once
Birgitta, from Sweden, Again, I've gone thru all of the 60,s 70,s , and soforth, and I have many different "stars" that I listen to. Sam Cooke will Always be a favourite of mine.
As I am Swedish, I can't help to remind you ‐ ABBA is coming ‐ in a NEW album!!!! ‐ after 40 ?? years!!!
I'm so Proud!
Still Sam is deep in my heart ❤
He walks like he's floating on clouds. LOL Very smooth. The performers of that time were just absolutely great. Great routines.
It’s been up for two years and I’m getting to it now. The tragedy of Sam Cooke’s death still breaks my heart. Two of the greatest artists killed by gunfire in America is a travesty to humanity. John Lennon and Sam Cooke. Two icons of music cut down. Thanks Fil for your timeless lessons of music you give to us with such knowledge. 😊
Sam Cooke was not only the greatest singer of all time, he was an amazing songwriter who wrote nearly all of his songs on acoustic guitar. Today's 'musicians' need to take a lesson from one of the greatest musicians of all time - create a melody that gets stuck in the listeners head, and lyrics on 'the pulse of the generation', then back it up with simple I-IV-V-vi chords - add the back beat. The Beatles knew it thats why they started covering stuff like it before they wrote their own stuff
Great performance! Sam Cooke had such a great recognizable voice and great stage presence. The band behind him makes this soo cool. Sad he died so tragically so young. Thanks Fil! Great analysis!🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
Loved the review and analysis as usual. Wreka Stow!
Another beautiful classic sound. Such a tragic end, and so many unanswered questions.
Wow!!!!!Excellent analysis and selection for this Samuel Cooke the creator of Soul music and with a great voice in addition to being a civil rights activist ... in this selected video he will show his natural talent and rhythm that leads to achieving that great interpretation I congratulate you again...👏👏👏👏🎤🎙♩🎶🎵🎼💯✔👌👌🖒🖒🖒👊🤘
Sam Cook is the cats meow! Love this jam, if it do not make you want to twist, you is a wooden chair.
Fil, thanks for answering My request to review Sam Cooke. Sam could sing it all very well from Pop, Blues, Rock, Country and Standards. In My Opinion Sam and Elvis were the best male Singers of all time. If you want more information re Sm Cooke's death from a different perspective try the book "Our Uncle Sam"by Erik Greene Sam's Nephew, I think You will find it very interesting. Stay Safe.
So thankful for UA-cam or my might have missed Sam with the Soul Stirrers in this life! Always so grateful for your work to keep us sane, Fil!!!
@@pattischell7975 That's not Sam with The Soul Stirrers, Sam left them in 1957. This is Sam's own Band.
if anything sam was similar in his vocal style and mannerisms with frank sinatra. both brilliant
@@robertbeatty9563 More like Elvis in the variety of musical stles He could and did sing
Hi Fil: In 2020 you reviewed some of the legendary soul singers of the 1950s & 1960s: Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson & more. They were not only great in their own right, but they also influenced the early days of rock music & continue to do so.
If you have time, pls add one more vocal genius to the list: Wilson Pickett.
Fil, This was a really good analysis of Sam Cooke. I'm a newbie to Wing of Pegasus so I have been going back and watching your analyses of other artists. I'm impressed. You are very talented yourself and I like your music. I am having a good time. Thanks so much.
He was so handsome! I love all of his songs. My favorite is "You Send Me." He was such a great entertainer and had such confidence. I had no idea that he was connected to Nat King Cole and Lou Rawls. Such a sad ending to his life. He could have had a verey long career. Thanks, Fil. Have you ever featured Jackie Wilson?
We loved the Twist! Sam Cook was a great singer; I loved his voice. “Chain Gang” was really memorable. I was a teen when he was popular..
Sam cooke great singer great human being, victim of racial, criminal injustice. Thank you for putting together a respectful and informative piece on one of my all time inspirational heros.
Sam is the main influence to Steve Perry from Journey and you can hear it in Steve's inflections.
nah i only hear it in rod stewart's voice
A true showman & legend. "A Change is Gonna Come" was his best. One of the 1st to not only write & produce his own music but co-owner of a publishing company. So bright & talented. He was taken way too soon. Great documentary "Legend" on Prime about him.
Great job, Fil. Thanks!!!
Great analysis Fil
The movie Innerspace with Meg Ryan And Dennis Quaid played all of Sam Cooke’s music
He was truly fantastic! When singing was actually singing, an art. 💜 Rest in Peace Mr. Sam Cooke.
Always loved the line, "how HE got here, I don't know". Just another person taking fun where he found it.
I always hear Cooke's influence in Steve Perry's stylings.
Sam had a wonderfully distinctive voice and he could sing any kind of song from rock to jazz. Sams version of ''For Sentimental Reasons'' was just fantastic. Excellent analysis as usual.
If anyone hasn't heard it, you must, must listen to Sam's Live At The Harlem Square Club album. It may be the greatest live album of all time. TV appearances paled next to his performances with black audiences. Pun intended.
Ok Phill, I love your voice, you also point out things I don't hear, thank you!
Thanks for reviewing Sam Cooke
So entertaining , Mr. Cooke was an elegant man. My older brother taught me the twist when I was 6 or 7 years old. Not sure if you have already done Little Darlin' by the Diamonds, I like watching their early version then watching them in their golden years preform this song.
The takeaway from the shooting story: Don't let the little head do the thinking for the big head!
Love watching these old clips... but I likely wouldn't get around to it if it wasn't for this channel.. thx man.
Fil, he is a legend man, another cut down by personal issues. Could u a vid on Jackie Wilson, in my opinion one the greatest performers of all time.
Have done!
Another great analysis Fil! Thank you! I have a favour to ask you. I am admin to 6 Bob Dylan Facebook groups and I belong to many of the other Bob Dylan groups! These groups are very active with
many daily posts and participation in comments, likes, shares etc.
Anyway, your analysis of Bob Dylan was posted and a lively
discussion ensued. People really liked your analysis but everyone wondered why you chose that song and footage and why given his great following and the fact that he has spanned 6 decades and is
still active in touring (postponed because of Covid -19) and that
he has just released a new Ablum Rough and Rowdy Ways as of June19, 2020 and he has just turned 79 years old! So many people have covered his songs, and they have been in many movies and that he has also covered many other people’s songs. He is a phenomenal Artist all round: musician, poet, lyricist, visual artist, iron works artist, writer. etc. Bob Dylan as you know has also won the Nobel Peace Prize for Literature and several other awards and honors. I want to ask you to do another analysis on Bob or perhaps even more than one over time! I will widely distribute it through-
out the groups. Here is a link to a song I truly hope you will consider
ua-cam.com/video/ujgqOgMIwfA/v-deo.html If not this one then please considera live performance of "It's Alright Ma (I'm only bleeding). I hope you will
be able to do this! Thanks so much Fil
BTW the Facebook Bob Dylan groups are well over 100 and I belong to most of them, plus they are linked up with the UA-cam community of subscribers and Bob Dylan channel hosts
Thanks! The videos are requested, so I don't choose them myself ☺
@@wingsofpegasus I did not know that! Glad you told me! All the best Fil you are really great!
One of the greatest voices ever!
Only just stumbled onto your channel. 1st video I saw was Julie Andrews followed by Karen Carpenter. Thought to myself that I'd love to see Sam Cooke. Kept scrolling and OMG, here it is!! (One of my faves, even though my favorite song of his is Cupid) Thank you for the great content!!
Really enjoyeed Sam's songs. Really enjoyed your analysis. thanks
One of the best voices period.
Afternoon Fil. Great analysis.👏 I love "Twisting the night away" great song and I love Rod Stewarts version too.🎼🎸🎹🎷🎵🎙 I listen to this song alot while I'm cleaning my apt. Oh Fil how you didn't get up and start twisting thru this I don't know, you would have rocked the house! I was hoping you would I kept waiting! Fil along with "Jailhouse Rock" , "Twisting the night away" would be another one I wish you would do, your take on them. Cali is going to be so lucky to have you come after the fires are long gone and the hurricane in Texas(prayers are with them). Fil I understand you doing the analysis now, it's a good thing but you were born to sing & play! Thinking out loud, btw don't be concerned I have and will always "behave" myself on the Live Streams. (I won't think out loud).😊I mentioned Josh Turner Guitar before(I think) to you when you get a chance please listen to "Acoustic Blues in D" by him, he's not as young as I thought-28? He was born to play the guitar & sing. I know your list is long but please put him on the list to analyze. Have a wonderful day Fil.❤
Often overlooked as one of the titans of music.
sam's shake paved the way to the new soul sound to come with otis redding, aretha franklin, sam and dave and wilson pickett
Thanks for this analysis of Sam Cooke. A great singer whose life was tragically cut short. A theory I had: I think the lady took Sam’s clothes because if she were afraid of him, she might think that he wouldn’t chase after her if he were naked. It would allow her to get away. I guess I could see myself doing this if I were in that situation.
Trumpet boys hittin' it hard when they can.
Killer arrangement.
I just LOVE Sam Cooke, and his music, and his beatufil voice. I was only 10years old when he tragickly died, byt I surely would have cross over the ocean from Sweden, to see/listen to him, if he didn't have to die so far (soon)!
(bad english?)
Anyway ‐ I listen to his music most every day, and I just LOVE it!
Sam’s Live at the Harlem Square album has already been mentioned a few times, but I want to point out that it shows a whole other side to his showmanship. It’s one accomplishment to skillfully work a politely seated audience in a big band setting, and it’s another to work a raucous crowd in a small club who are there for the gritty soul you put out in front of a raging sax. Wow. I love pop the side of Sam Cooke, but Harlem Square Sam Cooke blows me away.
Cooke’s biographer Guralnick tells a story about Cooke's running out of gas on tour in Memphis. Waiting for his brother Charles to come back from the service station, Cooke was approached by a white cop who told him to move the car, to push it if he had to. "His name was Sam Cooke, and he didn't push cars," is what he told the cop, before finally saying, "You push the fucking car. You may not know who I am, but your wife does. Go home and ask your wife about me.”
Sam Cooke smile is everything
Sam Cooke was a great influence for Freddie Mercury as well. Thanks, Fil, for the emotional analysis!
So interesting! Learned a lot. Thanks Fil 👍❤️
Sam Cooke is one of my all time favourite male vocalists, such an amazing voice. A change is gonna come. 🙂
Nice !
Whew 😅 I had computer problems lol.
What a voice !
Listen to this song on "Sam Cooke - Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963". That is all I can tell you. This version of "Twisting".... was his polished version. In Harlem Square - it is undiluted. He took it to church. If anyone reading this, has not heard "Live At The Harlem Square Club" in it's entirety- check it out. Trust me - you will be glad you did.
** Sam Cooke**
This Recording Artist Was A "Natural."**
His Vocal Abilities Were GOD-GIVEN!!!!!
Sam Was An "Outstanding" Performer And Songwriter!!!!!**
There Will Never Be Another **Sam** **Cooke**
My folks turned me onto Nat King Cole. I turned my folks onto Sam Cooke. "Cupid" (for My Barbra Rose). Heaven keep them all. Great analysis! Thanks Fil!
Love it, we use to do this song every night in our gigs, brilliant
