    Great advice for those who have never raised chickens and want to try it.

    Hi Becky, I noticed you’re a bit confused on the chickens’ digestive system. They do have a stomach. Food goes down the Oesophagus into the crop, where it sits, the Oesophagus leads from the crop to the Proventriculus (stomach), this is where digestion starts, the food will be mixed with digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid. The food then travels to the gizzard, where it’s completely ground up and mixed with digestive enzymes. The crop is just storage, they eat what they can through the day and digest it on a night.

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  7 років тому +1

      No they have a gizzard which is where their food is ground up and digestion takes place. A gizzard is not a stomach. ❤️☀️

    • @cj597
      @cj597 7 років тому +1

      Becky's Homestead yes they do, the proventriculus is a glandular stomach. The gizzard comes after the proventriculus. www.poultryhub.org/physiology/body-systems/digestive-system/

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  7 років тому

      If you call the proventriculus a "stomach" so be it. It is not something that is going to pop if the chicken eats uncooked rice. ❤️☀️

    • @cj597
      @cj597 7 років тому

      Becky's Homestead I’m not calling it a stomach, chicken biology is calling it a stomach, and no one can argue with that. The Proventriculus is a glandular stomach, it secretes digestive enzymes, then the food moves into the gizzard where it’s actually digested. Both together make a stomach, there isn’t just the gizzard.
      I never said anything about rice. Though it’s always advised not to feed it raw as it can swell.

    True that, adult chickens and layers eat about 1/4 to 1/3 of a pound of feed a day. This is, however, dependent on breed, life stage, and how much other stuff they eat, such as greens and bugs. Broilers eat more. They will eat pounds of food a day unless you limit it. However, I ferment the commercial feed, so that it gets more palatable, the birds eat less but quickly get full and there is less waste when they eat fermented feed. I also prefer buying pellets and crumbled feed as compared to chicken mash because when fermented, pellets and crumbs multiply more than mash which is not machine compressed.

    Hey Becky! I was given four chickens for Christmas from my Brother and my Sister in-law. one mother hen and three of her little ones, when we got them the young ones were just over four weeks old. I feed them a general feed my brother gave me with them and I mix a birdseed mix and also table scraps.

    Scratching and pecking is what they do! You are right. Ground casting feed is the best way to ensure that everybody is fed and inspected for health. Growing black fly larva is also a natural “fast food” that they love and will provide a constant natural source of protein. Thanks!

    Hey Becky
    I live in Portugal ( warm - hot weather here)
    I did the same way you explained it, but my chickens seem not to stop eating
    When I butcher some I see that they have very much fat like two/three hands full
    One white chicken had even 4kg 8,8 pounds, seems like way to much, right? :D
    I use them mainly for Eggs not for meat

    I feed by time rather than measuring out their food. They get all they can eat in 10 minutes, twice a day, the rest of the time they spend scratching in the compost and part of the garden.

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  5 років тому

      Yes, leave that alone. It's his crop. Make sure they always have fresh, clean water to drink and grit at all times. The crop fills up with food through out the day and is perfectly normal. If it is huge and bulging, you can cut down on their food just a bit☀️❤️☀️

    Read this plz .Becky when does a hen sit on eggs to hatch them . My hen layed 3 and not sitting

    • @cj597
      @cj597 7 років тому

      Lol Lal hens will only brood when their hormones tell them. It’s just a matter of waiting. You can own breeds that have a tendency to go broody, but that doesn’t mean they will.

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  7 років тому

      Do you have a rooster? A hen will lay 1 egg every day but will not sit on it, the next day she will lay another. Once she has enough ( she decides how many) she will start to sit on them. The reason it works like that is so all the eggs develop at the same time and will hatch within 2 or 3 days of each other. Just leave her alone, she knows what she is doing. You need to know not all hens are broody, so just wait and see. ❤️☀️

    • @lollal9203

    • @cj597
      @cj597 7 років тому

      Lol Lal sorry I’m not Becky but giving my 2 pence, if she is not sitting on them, she is not broody, you would know if she is broody, the behaviour is very distinguishable from average behaviour, and of course, most obviously, she’d be brooding them.
      Lots of chickens are red, red isn’t a breed, do you know what breed she is? Is she a RIR? Hybrid? Gamefowl? Do you only have one hen? If the cockerel is stressing her out, she won’t brood at all, and she will be overbred.

I have to feed the new hens up in the roof water and all and this is happening over a month now cause they are scared to come down...this morning one of the new hens came down and lay an egg. I was so surprised but I had to block off the best box so that the other hens did not bully her.....HELP PLEASE BECKY!

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  7 років тому

      That is very typical when you add new hens to a coop. Those old hens will bully the new girls and starve them out and they will die if you don't intervene. Maybe section off a small area for the new ones in the hen house with food, water and a nest box of their own. Wait three or four months and try again and see if they get along. ❤️☀️
