+Chris Newham thanks for watching Chris, I was shattered after doing all those time lapses. The cameras didn't catch me running backwards and forwards through the forest to re align the shots :-) haha. Worth it though as the sunset was amazing. ATB mate, Dean
+Andrew Beavers (Andy) they certainly did have a field day, I have only reacted once like that before. We were on holiday in Greece when I was younger and the mosquitos ate me alive and I ended up looking like Sloth from the Goonies :-) thanks for watching mate ATB
Hi there Dean - great to see you two out. I did see you both have a cracking time at the Northen Bushcraft Show. Left a comment on Jays Channel. This is a fantastic bivvy site and idea to break with tradition...wonderful views. What a sunset - you were both just bathed in light. Beautiful and energizing. Well, have a great day. All the best. Mark.
+Wye Explorer Hi Mark, thanks for watching. It was really great to head somewhere different with Jay and the bivvys. Love the regular forest but a change is always good. The sunset.... Well, it was breathtaking. The footage is all straight from the camera with no editing of colour or anything fancy so it really did look like that :-) even though the midges bit us to death it was still a great and relaxing night. Have a great day Mark, all the best. Dean
Dean Read A pleasure Dean. Now the light quality must have been something else live. The range of light in the Peak District. Awesome! You'll get your own back on the midges. My day....very good hike and swim. All the best. Mark.
I love camping in the woods. Those mosquitos are pretty much the only thing that makes it unpleasant from time to time. Thanks for sharing this lovely experience - Martin
+NorwegianWoods Hi Martin, thanks for watching. There was no wind at all so the midges were terrible :-) it was fun to get out and the weather was great. ATB Dean
+Dean Read yeah, it's that time where I havethe repellent in my pack at all times and the citronella candles go into the uco lantern. 😉. I've not got a head net though, may have to get one...?
Great video again Dean, looks like a great spot to catch those sunsets with great company to boot. Thumbs up from us. Look forward to your next camp. atb Gareth&Zoe
Nice one dean. I love bivvying but midges kill it. Little gets. I felt your pain. I've been swollen like that. Nightmare. Loved the sunsets and stars. Nicely done. Just a great place and a nice chilled out camp. Spot on. Thanks for taking us along. Atb.
Great video Dean, awesome sunset, I found in Scotland last week midge head nets are crap, they cling to the face and the midges take there feast, even with wide brimmed hat, I found found jaw line, cheeks got it worst, found Avon skin so soft worked really well for rest of my trip, bug net in bin , cheers craig
+PenButNoPencil-Photography-Outdoors Thanks for watching mate, we were really lucky with the conditions... A little less lucky with the midges but no pain no gain :-) ATB Dean
Same as Dean ..sometimes have a severe allergic reaction to some bites looked like elephant man after some summer camps...another great camp for you and Jay brilliant time lapses ..nice one ...atb ..steve
+Pinky Perky Derbyshire is a beautiful place, I love it here :-) thanks for watching the videos and I hope your retirement plan goes ahead. All the best
Looked like a great night apart from the midges they are not fun a got attached this week while mountain biking on the high peak trail.great time lapses Dean.
+Darren Bush Midges are a pain in the backside (face) this time of year. It was perfect conditions for them sadly as there was no breeze, all good fun though and no pain no gain :-) thanks for watching Darren
Great video from a beautiful place and there was some really nice time lapse of the sunset and stars too. Damn those midgies.... Had to laugh after the first 15 seconds as I can imagine you two arguing about who's turn it was to go back and get the camera after all the set-up shots, lol.
+Pondguru Outdoors haha :-) I'll have to do a compilation video of me running back to camera. I bet I have caught me saying "this is more trouble than it's worth" many times. That sunset and peace and quiet were worth the results of what the midges did. thanks for watching, ATB
Hi Dean great video, I've not been to the glorious Peak District yet but I'm hoping to get over there very soon maybe go from Edale For a over nighter on Kinder Scout.i might see you out there keep stay safe and thanks for the videos
Great to watch as always, love the camera work! you have the right idea, best to get out there when the weather is on side as it can be gone by the time we've talked about it! Nothing more annoying than people who say 'well we haven't had much of a summer this year' the best thing to do is when it's nice, get out there and enjoy!!!
hi dean blimey mate it looked like you had been up all night boxing lol damm midges that was great dean stunning time lapse of the sunset and stars as per norm dean a great vid till your next one dean take care best wishes chris
+Christopher Smith Hi Chris, it did look like I'd been given a good kicking after a night of being midge fodder :-) haha. Was really happy with the way the time lapses turned out, will try a few different camera settings for the next star time lapse so can't wait to get out here again. ATB mate, Dean
Awesome vid Deano!! What a great wild camp it was... dispite the midges! : ) As it stands now i think i can count 54 different bites, they really did eat us alive haha, but all worth it to have such an amazing night in the Peak District in my memory! : ) Bring on the next one dude! : )
+GoonieBushcraft thanks for watching Jay, even though the midges we're crazy it was a really great trip. Was nice to have a change of location and I can't wait for the next adventure. Thanks for watching, liking, commenting and more specifically.... Being there to distract some of the midges and coax them away from their task of eating my face :-)
Just watching again bez, awesome video, awesome night!! : ) We need to do more like this! Just nice quick overnighters in cool places, beach, caves, tree's! And hopefully Ray along too : ) Jables
Tell me about it, i'd like to keep ticking off new places.. dying to get out again, also to play with the new toy ;-) the weather has been terrible during the last 4 days sadly.
+Mark Murphy hi Mark, thanks for watching. We returned the stones to the wall the morning after before we left :-) I always would anyway but I knew people would check and mention it if they went there haha. ATB mate, Dean
+Cornish Knives & Camping Hi Mike, it was a top night even if the midges did devour my face :-) The weather was amazing though, I loved looking up at the stars while lay in my bivvy. ATB mate, Dean
+Hardy Tempest thanks for watching Hardy. Loved it up there even though the midges bit me to death. Jay held out well but his bites were revealed the next day :-) ATB Dean
Great video, those midges can be a pain in the lower levels, thats why I prefer Autumn/winter up there, less flies and less people! I'm like you, I get some bad reactions from the little bleeders. Thanks for sharing, Steve.
Great spot Dean , love it there. I think Jays getting to like beyond the bush-craft forest hehe. Was brave to face the midges. I don't think Iv'e been bitten as mush as this year. Will have to put antihistamine and bite creme on the list. Would those nets be ok generally? Nice one on the fires. So many careless people out there. In my limited time in the GPD I do come across untidy remains of wild-campers and litter bugs. The few spoil it for the many. A little responsibility goes a long way and not leaving it for others to fix. If i find a canon 7D on a tripod I'll know you've left it behind from a continuity shot.!
The Hunka bags are awesome. That looked a great night despite the midges. I totally agree with you about the fires,no need for them whatsoever. Though I am guilty of using a honey stove occasionally. I hope you put those stones back. ATB Mark.
+Squatts Wild Camping hi Mark thanks for watching. It was a really great night, the weather was perfect and the midges are a distant memory now that the bites have gone thankfully :-) We did put the stones back afterwards, I always do anyway but I knew people would ask or go there and find out. I just didn't record anything as I had a face like the elephant man at the time haha, I think Jay did though for his video. I've had a few questions lately about camp fires in the Peaks and have seen a few alarming videos of people camping and almost setting fire to dry grass / heather. Didn't want to sound like a preacher but also didn't want to come under fire for encouraging bad practice... It's a tricky subject really so I always tread carefully when I mention stuff like that. Thanks again for watching and commenting Mark, ATB Dean
+Dean Read I'm a little less tactful lol. I went with a group of bushcrafters a couple of months ago (you may have watched the video) they insisted that a fire was essential to keep warm, I prefer a sleeping bag but each to their own. Anyway, one of them set his sleeping bag on fire which I'd already told them was going to happen. I won't be going with them again.
Nice vid, what a beautiful place! Your poor eyes!! They really did swell up, hope you got some anti-histamines down you when you got home. I didn't realise they were so bad in the Peak District. I've just got back from the WHW and they were pretty bad up there already. Will be posting vids soon :) ATB, Nathan.
Some great time lapses mr read. I feel your pain, anything that bites seems to love me to midges, mosquitos, ants, dogs, kids, the wife. Looks like a lovely place to camp though.👍
+Fenland Wild Camper haha :-) yeah I'm usually the one that keep the midges busy when out with the family. I was shattered after running backwards and forwards adjusting the time lapses, was worth it though. Thanks for watching, ATB Dean
Im soo glad you put this up on IG mate...it never showed up on my subscription list.... Loved the video....Why dont you take insect repellent with you?..I never leave the house to go camping without it. Rob.
+RDPproject hi Rob, thanks for watching. Sadly I forgot my inspect repellent, I'm terrible at forward planning :-) the midges seem to love me no matter what I use, I've tried lots of different things and nothing seems to keep them at bay. It's like the flies in outback Australia, they are just there and that's it :-) haha ATB Dean
Here is some you can find in Boots....Should contain DEET at levels 20% or higher www.boots.com/en/Boots-Repel-Insect-Repellent-Roll-On-50-DEET-6-months-_1121459/
Nice trip, boy do I miss Scotland when I see England too. Migits here on Vancouver Island carry small children away they are so big in Canada. I cut a lemon in half and stick whole cloves into the lemon. Works for me. Cheers
+Stephen Bradley Hi Stephen, thanks for watching. I'd love to visit Canada, I saw recently on a wildlife program that the midges and mosquitos in Canada are huge :-) I'd like to do an week in a canoe there. Thanks for the tip for repellent, I'll make sure I'm more prepared next time. All the best, Dean
+Mike Webb Hi Mike, thanks for watching. They have been a feature at this time of year every time I have camped sadly. They must love me as I always get bitten :-) Camped on Kinder about 8 years ago and they were horrendous in similar conditions to those we had in this video, just a shame there was no breeze... All good fun though :-) ATB Dean
+AlexBensonAlex hi Alex, thank you for watching. I'll make sure I do a quick run down of the settings I use and how I edit the star time lapses next time I do one, ATB Dean
Flipping heck Dean "HEY YOU GUUUYYYYS" LOL one for Jay there. You need to sort out some repellent! I camped at Millstones once and come home looking just like that, bloomin Midges.
+DownHillCol flipping midges are a pain in the backside, I've tried everything over the years when camping in the Peaks and Scotland.... Nothing works for me sadly, they just love me too much :-) haha. Thanks for watching
+RS Focus 435 hi thanks for watching. my Berghaus waterproof is the Goretex Paclite and is around 4 years old. I've given it some serious abuse and it's lasted well. I have another which is a RAB firewall, it's excellent but wasn't the cheapest. If you are after a budget jacket then I can recommend the Karrimor eVent Alpiniste too.
Hi Dean, Just this minute ordered a Berghaus light trex hydroshell jacket, I wanted something i can roll up and carry, I was walking around Edale last friday and after coming down Crowden Clough and going through Upper booth farm the heavens opened up and all i can say is with my £15 asda coat i got very wet
+RS Focus 435 oh dear, I got wet through in a cheap Regatta Jacket many moons ago. I can't fault Berghaus brand quality so I'm sure your jacket will perform well.
Looks like you caught the weather just right, shame about the midges though. I use the friendly swede mosquito net suspended over my HunkaXL, keeps the netting away from my face which stops the critters biting me through the netting. It's only £15 on amazon, weighs very little although it's surprisingly bulky for what it is (it squishes to about the size of a grapefruit). With clever packing I still manage to fit all my gear into my Exos 38. atb, Tim o/
+Peak District Hillbilly Hi Tim, thanks for watching. That bug net sounds interesting, mine is just a cheap LifeVenture one from GoOutdoors so I'll investigate your recommendation. ATB mate, Dean
Im a keen hiker, and for a few months ive been dabating weather to get into wild camping to extend my hikes past my normal day millage and i find your videos very inspiring, and more importantly to me, more insuring. could you recommend a good starting place to camp?
+Eyeshoot Media hi thanks for watching, if you are after a good place to start for wild camping I can recommend Grindslow Knoll on Kinder Scout. I have a video called "Kinder Scout above the clouds", if you check that out you'll get to see what it's like up there. Fantastic views and not very far at all from Edale. ATB and I hope you have fun when you get out there for a camp. Dean
+Justin Ammerman haha :-) don't be too jealous. It's raining here now and will be for the next few days... British Summer is over already :-) thanks for watching Justin. All the best, Dean
BTW whenever you're walking near Ashover watch out for the cows there; they climb over walls to chase you! We speak from experience. Still have nightmares about it.
Great video mate.. The spot you chose looked beautiful.. Loved the sun set shots and star time lapse... top quality. Would you recommend the thermorest that you use??? Cheers ATB - Marcus
+Woodsman ocD86 hi Marcus, thanks for watching it's a really great spot. I'd definitely recommend the Therm-a-Rest Venture WV, it's been an excellent mat and I've had it around 2-3 years.
Great video Dean as usual most insperational even with those dreaded midges , i was eaten alive up at magpie mine the other day been doing my timelapse too and just wondering what time pr frame in seconds did you use in the star lapse . Anyhow keep up the good work pal 😆
+Andrew Seadon hi Andrew thanks for watching. Magpie Mine is on my list of places to visit again soon, just waiting for a particular item of kit to arrive then I'm off there :-) As far as the star time lapses go.... I was shooting 4 second exposures with a gap of 1 second in between each image. I think the ISO was around 1000 and the aperture was around F/4.0. I'm still playing with the settings to get as much star detail in as possible without it being too grainy or without getting too much star movement in the image. I do speed the time lapse up to fit in with the music so not 100% sure how many frames are on screen per second but I had the camera running for 1hr 30mins. Thanks again for watching, ATB Dean
Hi Dean hope you and family are all well. I have just introduced the wifey to your channel as i find the vids quiet interesting. There is one question she has told me to ask you......that is do we need the land owners/ wardens permission to camp out on their land? we stopped in a sheapards hut in buxton/Ashbourne i think it was, but that was like 60 quid a night.
+Fergs uK haha :-) you're not wrong Fergs, I looked like Sloth from the Goonies. Thankfully it settled down before I had to do the School run that afternoon, didn't want to frighten any children haha. ATB mate, Dean
+embarado smithing and woodcraft thanks for watching. You're right it is a plantation, the woodslands valley and the hills around the reservoirs near bye are pretty much all pine plantations. They come and go over the years with the logging activity. It's a force of habit calling it a forest I think :-)
Lovely video what a great evening & beautiful sky the multiple timelapses captured it very well.
+Chris Newham thanks for watching Chris, I was shattered after doing all those time lapses. The cameras didn't catch me running backwards and forwards through the forest to re align the shots :-) haha. Worth it though as the sunset was amazing. ATB mate, Dean
Fantastic video, and lovely views.

Great vid again Dean.excellent shots of the sunset & red night sky's.By the look of you're eyes the mozzy's had a field day.

Great video , looks like it was fun apart from the midges. try spraying Your gear with permethrin it's quite efective against most insects.
Hi Dean, I'm looking for a waterproof coat, Can you tell me the model of your Berghaus and would you recommend it, thanks
With clever packing I still manage to fit all my gear into my Exos 38.
atb,
Tim o/
+Peak District Hillbilly Hi Tim, thanks for watching. That bug net sounds interesting, mine is just a cheap LifeVenture one from GoOutdoors so I'll investigate your recommendation. ATB mate, Dean
Peak District Hillbilly it worked mate, the net looks excellent... I need one :-)
Dean
Thank you ill check it out :)
Sooooo jealous of UK weather. I wish 27° C was a hot day in Georgia.
+Pinky Perky haha :-) I love Ashover but I've not been attacked by the cows as yet, I'll keep my wits about me next time I pass them :-)
Great video mate.. The spot you chose looked beautiful.. Loved the sun set shots and star time lapse... top quality.
Would you recommend the thermorest that you use??? Cheers
ATB - Marcus
+Woodsman ocD86 hi Marcus, thanks for watching it's a really great spot. I'd definitely recommend the Therm-a-Rest Venture WV, it's been an excellent mat and I've had it around 2-3 years.
+Dean Read - That's good enough for me mate.. Thanks 👍🏽
+Woodsman ocD86 I'd definitely buy another myself :-)
+Dean Read - Just looking at them now... Comes in 4 different sizes!! Going large I think!!!!
+Woodsman ocD86 I think mine is the standard size, not 100% sure though :-)
Nice job..... gotta say tho mate, you did look like it was a rough night, battle scars were clear to see lol
Great video Dean
as usual most insperational even with those dreaded midges , i was eaten alive up at magpie mine the other day been doing my timelapse too and just wondering what time pr frame in seconds did you use in the star lapse .
Anyhow keep up the good work pal 😆
+Andrew Seadon hi Andrew thanks for watching. Magpie Mine is on my list of places to visit again soon, just waiting for a particular item of kit to arrive then I'm off there :-)
As far as the star time lapses go....
There is one question she has told me to ask you......that is do we need the land owners/ wardens permission to camp out on their land? we stopped in a sheapards hut in buxton/Ashbourne i think it was, but that was like 60 quid a night.
oh jay's stance is ledgendary hahaha same stance from back in the day :-)
Great vid and place. Thanks.
See my comments on Dean's vid regards the midges.
Dean "Elephant Man" Read, haha. Try some vicks vapour rub for the midges :)
+Fergs uK haha :-) you're not wrong Fergs, I looked like Sloth from the Goonies. Thankfully it settled down before I had to do the School run that afternoon, didn't want to frighten any children haha. ATB mate, Dean
sorry Dan that aint a forest thats a PLANTATION the dead ringer that tells me this is 1 singular specie of trees and 2 the vary neat rows of trees
+embarado smithing and woodcraft thanks for watching. You're right it is a plantation, the woodslands valley and the hills around the reservoirs near bye are pretty much all pine plantations. They come and go over the years with the logging activity. It's a force of habit calling it a forest I think :-)
