- Check it out as we compare the Instant Vortex vs. the Ninja Air Fryer
Welcome to The Gutz Life!
In a works where size matters, I am on the hunt to find an Air Fryer that will feed a large family in one batch.
I made homemade chicken wings and french fries while comparing the 6-quart Instant Vortex Plus with the 4-quart Ninja Air Fryer.
Products used:

Just FYI, you can set the full cook time on the Vortex and the unit will tell you when to flip the food. When you reinsert the tray the time/temp will pick up where it left off.
Perfect! Thanks for the tip
Excellent video! My only suggestion would have been to cook the same quantity of food for a more accurate time-to-done reading. That being said these were the 2 models I wanted compared... so thanks very much.
Thanks for your suggestion! I appreciate.
Finally, an honest and unbiased review. Also we get to hear how loud they are
Thank you for watching!
I just purchased the Instant pot and it is the way to go from what I saw in the video. You did not highlight it a whole lot but the instant post is taking only slightly longer to cook more food. If you account for that the Instant Pot is the runaway winner. The comparison would be more precise if you put the same amount of food in each. That way, one, the Instant Pot, is not disadvantaged by having to cook more with no more time alotted above what the Ninja needed. Video liked. Informative.
I agree the same amount of food would have given a more accurate comparison. That being said, if you are cooking for more than a couple the Instant Vortex is hands-down the winner. I love it!
Thanks for sharing!
If you use an oven and put some chicken wings on a tray, whether one puts 6 or 12 it will take the same amount of time to cook. So why would the amount of food in each of these air fryers make a difference in cooking time? She filled them both to capacity and that's a fair comparison test. If she had put less in the large one it would defeat the whole purpose of buying a larger air fryer.
Thanks for this comparison, as these seemed like the 2 top performers in the price range. You can't go wrong with either, but the Instant seems like a clear winner in my eyes. Better User interface, bigger basket if needed, and the buttons and dial are WAY easier to use than the clunky buttons and arrows of the ninja. Definitely gonna be going with the instant vortex when I buy an air fryer in the future.
Excellent real world review, Cheers from Australia. p.s. I have the Vortex Plus being delivered tomorrow! :) oh and the use of baking powder and cornstarch (in a flour mix with seasoning etc) on your chicken will definitely increase the crispness of the chicken on either machine.
Thank you! I hope you love the Vortex Plus!
By the way, on the instant pot you have to put the full time if you need don't restart half way. If you put 20mins and flip them at 10mins you just slide it back in with not pressing of any buttons and it will continue to cook at the same temperature FYI.
I have the Instant vortex Clear Cook 6 qt. --for about 2 weeks. The time/temp is all in one now so easy--the window/light is especially nice since you can check without even opening. It also has a sloped surface for the menu. I wouldn't bother doing 6 minutes and then set 6 minutes again--I'd set 12, pull and turn at 6 minutes and push back in and it resumes. It does not tell you at 6 minutes--it seems to do it closer to 2/3 of the time--I just pay attention to the time and flip then. 'The last minute is counted down by seconds. Don't know if the Ninja has changed any either but I do like the Vortex Clear Cook 6 qt with the changes that evidently have been made from the model you have. My favorite things I've made is an adaptation of my mustard glazed salmon and roasted rosemary little red potatoes though have made frozen fries and wings for my husband.
Mustard glazed salmon sound delicious!
Thanks for sharing!!
Good video, but I think that it would has been more fair if you have used the Ninja 5 .5 qts. to compare with the Vortex 6 qts capacity instead of 4 qts.
Thanks for spending the time to make this helped a lot ! Cheers from Scotland!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!!
The vortex was Americas Test kitchen's pick .I will be buying one. I have a Nuwave oven it is going in the garbage. The racks have discolored after one use and it s a pain in the butt to clean. Thanks for this video honey .Wish they made a bigger one .
I love how easy this one is to clean. I’m sure you will like it too
@@thegutzlife I love it. Now if I could only find some recipes everything on their site is for the instant pot
I agree i had the Nuwave and i sent it back to Amazon will be getting the Vortex also
I also had a Cosori and am sending that back also it got like 72,000 reviews was not impressed.
Oops I got confused they actually didn't do the instapot vortex. But they done two different reviews years apart. I do love my Instapot vortex. Works great and very easy to clean
Outstanding, thank you for this review. I bought the Vortex because of this, and love it.
Thank you, this is really helpful :)
U cooked double the quantity of wings in the instant Vortex - of course it will take a little more time & energy to cook. Would have been helpful to put same quantities in each to assess cooking times (although I appreciate you were demonstrating capacity differences)
I agree. Capacity was a priority when making our decision.
She didn't want soggy chicken so she said she didn't want to overcrowd it.....single layered is the only way to go IF u want crispy food
Great video! However, not sure how did you set your temperature on the vortex. It should be automatic. It will tell you when to add the food and turn the food. And once you open it and flip the food, just close it right away and you don’t have to adjust the temperature, it will continue the timer and temperature after closing it, no pre-heat needed.
I have the Instant Vortex and i can say its one of the best Air fryer in the market. :)
Thanks! On my Vortex, the Vortex Plus, there is a pre-programmed temperature of 360 degrees but I also have a button labelled ‘Temp’ and when pushed I can use the dial to select any other temperature up to 400 degrees.
I have discovered that if I move fast, and not leave the basket open too long, I don’t have to preheat the machine again. I must have been moving too slow, or talking too much, in the video that it required the additional preheat 😂
I agree. I think it is the best on the market. I use mine many times each week.
@@thegutzlife You’re welcome!
And did you know that by pressing the temperature button and hold it for few seconds it will change from °F to °C? And yes, we we’re using it too most of the days.
Enjoy Air Frying!! :)
@@jayplaton1222 I did not know that! Thanks for sharing!
Happy Air Frying to you too!
Hi, so Vortex is a good brand? Saw it in Amazon and didn´t have any revews. I´m buying an air fryer ... so you guys recommend Vortex or Cososri for a family af 6 ? Both are square and have bigger basckets
@@VeronicaGarcia-fg3ss I love the Vortex! I haven’t personally tried the Cosari but I want to! I have heard great things
The Ninja cooked a tad faster only because there is a smaller basket. I prefer the instant vortex
You are comparing apples to oranges. Of course the 6 qt. Is larger than the 4 qt. !
Why she cooked more in the Vortex is becos she wanted to show the volume each machine can take.
That being said, I wud prefer the vortex as it is bigger in volume 22 vs 11 wings. I’ll just have to airfry it longer to get it crispier.
I prefer the vortex because of the extra volume too
If you have more to cook you have to increase the cook time. Instant makes a 9qt dual zone basket with a removable divider so you can have one big basket
Excellent video, thank you for this comparison and adding your own opinions and reasons for choosing one over the other.
Thank you
Well of course the bigger one’s going to be slower because it can take more food so requires a bit longer time and the smaller one you’re not getting the amount you want and you’ve gotta use the thing twice so what do you think putting a few minutes extra on the vortex or having to do two separate sets of each item like fries and wasting time and energy you’re also using your pot a lot more often than you with the vortex
I think the ninja and the four texts are very comparable it’s just the sizing and with the vortex it has a nice lock but not a sleek but it is a bigger capacity which saves you money because that way you’re not having to do two separate Tresa fries
The dog at 4:00 did it for me :D But thank you! I just bought a 'factory refurbished' 4qt Instant Vortex (origional/not plus) from Ollies today for $50 and wasn't sure if it was a deal or not since this is my first air fryer.. Man I am amazed with this thing! 45 minutes after I got it home I already made tater tots and even baked a cheap pot pie and it came out amazingly well!
The temperatures are probably not calibrated the same so in the Vortex you could just turn up the temperature.
Instant continues to be an innovative brand of high quality appliances; I own this fryer. I've used I-Pots for around 5 years with complete satisfaction. 'Ninja' is too full of gimmicks for me.
I love my instant pots too
Many good thinks said about the Instant Vortex 6 Quart and I would like to add one more. It is currently selling for $89.99 which is a lot cheaper than the Ninja. Get one for Christmas before they are all gone! Happy Air Frying!
They are a great price right now!!
I love the sweater 👍The dogs want some chicken 🍗 I totally can’t decide which one I want 🤔
Thank you for a lovely video. However, you are not really comparing the Ninja and the Vortex. You are comparing a large capacity with a smaller capacity. Ninja also comes with larger, square baskets.😊
Thanks for the review. Did the dog get some fries too?! 😜
Ok video. Seems like a more accurate comparison would be to compare different air fryers with the same capacity, or at least cook the same amount of food in both the Instant and the Ninja instead of packing both to their max when they hold different amounts and therefore won't cook the same. It's not much of a comparison; they both cooked the food put into them perfectly well and they have different capacities and prices. The end.
For the purpose of this review, I was mostly concerned about capacity as I am feeding a large family.
Thank you!
Ninja makes an 8 quart the same function as the one you have on your counter
I love the vortex air fryer and that’s the one I bought but mines bigger it’s a 7 in 1 quart with rotisserie
I have been looking at these but geeze they seem to be extremely loud. Is this how loud they actually are or is this from the type of mike/camera being used, Thanks
You could have done the whole thing on the Instant in one complete time setting… It will tell you when the halfway point is, without a second preheat.
Excellent video!!! Thank you for helping me decide which one to buy!!!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Gracias me decidí por la instant gracias a ti. Gran video y dedicación. Saludos desde Chile!!
Gracias!
I have the Insta Pot Vortex Plus 6 QT air fryer. Today I learned a valuable lesson that might be helpful to your viewers.
I was going to bake some biscuits for breakfast. I have a package of those square parchment paper inserts for air fryers and decided to use one to place my biscuits on while cooking. As you mentioned, the Vortex has to preheat first.
To save time, I placed a parchment paper insert into the basket, set the time and temp and pressed Start. My air fryer started to preheat and I quickly started to detect a burning smell that got stronger as the preheat continued. When the Add Food message appeared, I pulled out the basket.
When I did I noticed that the circulating fan had blown the parchment paper insert up onto the heating element because there was no food on it to hold it down. That was the cause of the burning odor I detected. There was a metal frame around the heating element that prevented the paper from coming into direct contact with it, so the paper basically singed instead of catching fire. Disaster averted and lesson learned.
What about noise is it a big difference in sound between ninja which you mentioned is quieter?
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for the great upload. 👍🏻
I just bought the vortex +7 in one and it comes with a rotisserie and it’s 10 quarts so it’s a bit bigger and just bought it so I can’t wait to use it
Awesome review thank you much
Thank you!
Great video.....although it seemed like you set the timer on instant pot twice on 8min....think that's the reason for second heat up time that you lost. Got the exact instant pot and if i set my time higher it actually tells you to turn it.
I am still learning. Lol!
Hehe yah life's all bout learning.......life with an air fryer is amazing
@@fransvanzyl9590 And they make cooking fun again and not so much a chore.
I just put my wings in for 18 min. Why did you do 8 and 8.
Ma'am, in order to do an accurate comparison, you have to put in the same amount. 12 wings for the ninja, then 12 wings for the instant vortex, not 20.
I agree! If I was solely looking at cooking time, I would have kept the same amount.
I really wanted to compare the size and cooking volume for the purpose of this review
@@thegutzlife Your reviews are always great though :)
Thank you for this video!
Forget about the fryers, did you put the dog in the pantry? LOL
Lol! I can’t believe it has taken so long for someone to comment about that. Her food bowls are in there. It’s her favourite place to be.
@@thegutzlife She's so cute 🥹
Thanks for the review! I don't agree with the rest about that you should have put the same amount in both of them. They have different capacities and you cooked the food according to their capacity.
Thank you ❤️
the more food you put in, the longer it needs to cook. they were given the same amount of time even though one had less food to cook than the other, how is that an even comparison????
@@paulf4133 definitely. For this review, capacity was priority over cooking time
Thank you for this video I have this exact vortex arriving today, I'm completely new to air fryers what foods do u air fry and what foods do you roast in it please?
Every time you open an oven it loses temperature. On a conventional oven it takes ten mins to come back to set temp.
Very true!!
Thank you! This was helpful!
Great! You are welcome!!
I have this and it never went back to preheat one you flip it you close the drawer and just press start again
Hello, I bought my vortex of this model but the temperature goes up to a maximum of 205 degrees. I've had my vortex for 2 days and just today I started experimenting, and I made the fries frozen at 200 degrees.
Can you tell me the difference the Vortex plus ? Because temperatures are different thanks
Should have individually showed the sound when switched on, can't distinguish sound when both are on at the same time
Ninja doesn’t have the wideness but it seems to cook better imo. I didn’t need the wide space and I had this feeling that the shape plays a part in getting the meat cooked.
I loved that the Ninja wasn’t as wide and didn’t take up as much space too! I am sure that if my family was smaller, and I didn’t need to cook as much to feed my hungry troops, the Ninja would be perfect.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!
With a smaller amount the instant Vortex would compare better
@@rgruenhaus true. For this comparison I really was interested in the size and cooking enough food for our large family
Amazing video, thank you
You need to cook same amount of food in each to compare time. My air fryer will cook a cup of fries very quickly but is much slower if full.
I'd guess the only reason why the Ninja wings looked more crispy is because you only had half the amount in it 11 pieces and there was extra space for air to flow through them, where the InstaVortex..22 pieces didnt leave much space ...considering the insert in the vortex, you really dont need to flip wings if you had just put 12 pieces in it. First time I did it..I cooked about 12-14 wings in it but did it for 12 min for nice crispy wings...All depends on how cooked or how crispy you want the wings....I bought the InstaPot Pressure Cooker as well and I think although it's not as expensive as the Ninja products...the Timers and preheating and sizes of the capacity hands down...makes the Insta Line Pretty darn good...Great video especially for a beginner
Thank you! I appreciate your thoughts on this 👍🏻
Of course the Ninja is smaller. It says in description it's 4 qt while the vortex is 6. Also, how long is the preheat time on the Vortex? You said 3 minutes for the Ninja but that's it.
The vortex was slightly less than 3 mins. 2 mins and 50seconds to heat to 400 degrees. It takes less time to heat to a less temp of course
Double the fries takes more time. Preheat rings the unit up to temp. Instants the way to go
I love the vortex
Me too!
Neither air fryer looks like it is ready for the public yet. They both need to be more user friendly.
I just looked at the Ninja 2 drawer air fryer. Nice.
There was a small learning curve at the beginning but after a few uses it is simple enough. My preteen even uses it (with close supervision)
@@thegutzlife I found the Ninja 2 drawer air fryer that is better.
@@shareethornberry8385 brilliant! Enjoy!!
Since vortex is bigger it requires more time during to sizr
thank you~ this video was exactly what i was looking for~~ what do you think of noise level of both machine?
The noise level is comparable on both and I don’t find it too loud. I am able to easily carry on a conversation in the kitchen over the noise of the fan.
@@thegutzlife I just bought Ninja today as my wife want a smaller unit. I just found out my Australia version or newer version(?) Ninja automatically stops when the basket is taken out, and no need to do the settings again.
@@khan999han6 that’s great! I hope you love it!
@@thegutzlife heheh I have the music cranked while I cook anyway..my wife isn't a fan of all my musical taste but she does love the taste of my cooking. And she hasn't cooked for 37yrs!.. so I get to listen to whatever I like when I'm creating! With a nice glass of wine of course.
@@iamgort70 I love music cranked when I am in the kitchen too!
I'm trying to decide between these 2 but with the Instant Vortex having the PTFE coating that seems to be the deal breaker with the Vortex for me.
That’s fair.
Are you really never ingesting anything toxic ever? At least here you're gaining conveniency .
The coating does not break down below 500 F. The Vortex only goes to 400 F
What is the exact height of the Instant Vortex? The Company says almost 15", which is a bit to high for my cabinet, but I have seen another say 13". Thanks.
I just measured my Instant Vortex (same one that is in the video) and it is just under 13" tall. The space between my counter and my cabinets is 15" and I have lots of room to spare when I slide it under the cabinet.
@@taztaffie Thank you, I'll have to get one.
Loved the Review Tamara... My lil Sis has the Ninja and loves it very much,,, I'm about to get the Vortex tomorrow... :D
Thank you! Happy air frying!!
Did the vortex smell, if yes how long?
I didn’t notice a smell at all
1:04 I agree😌
Thanks..😊😊😊😊
Comparing equal size units would be better, but the information about your family size and appetite helps understand the comparison
Thanks 👍🏻
hello, I do not speak English but I would like to know about which of the 2 air fryers is the best option, which one do you recommend? Can you leave me a post so I can translate it please, I am undecided and I don't know which one to buy, your comments will be very helpful. Thank you
I liked them both! The Ninja is a few minutes faster but the Vortex is bigger.
I stuck with the Vortex because I have a large family to feed.
Thankyou very much! I’ll buy the vortex
@@betzyespronceda7171 yay! I hope you love it!
Dang guh you fine. Thanks for the video!
Excellent review .
But as you say it's horses for courses being a small family of 2 kids are grown and gone.
I find the Ninja as the way to go for us.
A bigger family would probably prefer the Vortex for larger portions.
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the Ninja as much as we did
I prefer to have the larger one even though i live alone, it means i can cook a whole meal in it at one go!
Before people do reviews they should know how to use it. A quick read of the manual would have helped this review. If I hadn’t read or watched other reviews I would have been discouraged the fact you have to set the time and temp twice instead of setting it once and getting a reminder to flip or mix food.
Excellent videos!!! +1 subscriber, more reviews please.
Not having a dedicated preheat option is a deal breaker for me. Goodbye, Ninja.
I do like the preheat as well.
i do believe the dog is hungry she is starting to pace round the kitchen.........
Thanks for review 👌👌
At the start, I heard: Welcome to the good slave.
Oh no! I obviously need to talk slower! Thanks for letting me know.
@@thegutzlife lol it's ok I had a good laugh! Thanks for the comparison.
Can't hear you clearly when you are standing between the two running machines.
Thank you for letting me know. I will see when I can update the vid
22 wings will take longer than 11
Great video!
How about the teflon on the Instapot?
You might want to rethink your production, as for the most part all you hear is two air fryers making noise with some squeaking in the background. Not the best presentation I've seen.
Do they have a chemical smell. I saw that on a lot of reviews on the Ninja.
I didn’t notice a chemical smell from either one
The 4 wt fryer wont do whole chicken
Interesting. I was not familiar with either of these products.

Looks great, functions great, and highly recommended. The buttons are touch (not pressure activated "touch"), which was a nice detail ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxD4Qeo-HRLxMfom_PDinM_SBfes00qJsB Perfect size for normal every day meals, and it cooks food very thoroughly. On preset settings upon first use, it cooked my chicken breasts to a crisp. Boarder line too dry, so next time I'll either decrease temperature or time. Not a bad thing, just a minor adjustment for next time. No oil was used, so food was clean to the touch. Excited to see how other meals will turn out. Will recommend to friends and family in the future!
You need to either be nearer the camera or to speak louder. It is a bit difficult to hear you.
Leftovers matter!
If your life is so hectic you have to worry about a couple of minutes or watching seconds on a display, you may want to reevaluate your life.
Stop using canola oil
Dog doesnt care much about the brands poor dog just need some wings from mom ... !!!
Ha ha so true!!
RTFM before doing a review
Ha ha thanks!
You might want to learn how to fry chicken wings first before you do the review so you know how long to cook
We prefer to not fry our wings and usually bake them. Check out my video where I compare baking in the oven and air frying, ua-cam.com/video/ah9sgCAK0Ko/v-deo.html
