Andrew I grew up by the beach, so I did all saltwater fishing. Then my brother moved to Kernville in 70 my freshman year in high-school. There was a local kid who taught me how to fish on the Kern. I spent every summer in high-school fishing living with my brother and fishing the Kern. Then I moved there in 77 and lived there until 80. Zekes balls of fire were always the go to, and live crikets. Also Panther and Martin and black rooster tail . I can tell you all the places.
Definitely an old school place to fish and camp. My Dad told stories of the 60s and 70s out there for weeks camping and smokin' weed
I can’t thanks you enough for this video. That area is one of my favorite places on the planet, I love it up there. In fact one of the last days I spent with my mom, before she passed away, was at the park in Kernville. Every time I come back to Ridgecrest (I live in Indiana) to visit my pops I make a trip up into the mountains.
Sorry to hear about your Mom, A few days before this video I lost my Dad. That trip was to help clear my head. Thanks for tuning in
It was fun times exploring the Kern! We got many more trips up there for sure! Can't wait for the burger place to open!
Gotta try to go again before it goes up in flows.
That spot in the camp ground is where I have spent a few weeks.
I was just up there and it's about to be prime condition before the spring runoff. One last batch of weather coming through, then it should warm up a bit along with the bite. Nice video!
Yep won't be long before all that snow melt hits. Thanks for watching!
You said it in a nutshell, that river gets hammered, and you don't fish right after a plant it is tough to catch. Thanks for taking us along. I usually go up 3 to 4 times a year.
Thanks for watchin'
the fish like fast moving water up there.
Great video my man thanks for sharing I'm from Bakersfield and I like fishing the kern river , usually drive all the way up there to Kernville for my limits
Such a fun area. Going to be a massive floods there this spring with the melt off
I would fish the faster moving water. Trout usually hang out in the end of a run or the beginning of one. behind the rocks too. "the foam is home" is what they say. It can get a bit tricky there sometimes depending on flow and water temperature. Main thing is to keep moving.
We smashed the trout last year at the first spot using pink and white mice tails on a dropper rig!
I was there last weekend! I fish that first spot alot! Salmon eggs with a split shot gets it done! Some days one every cast! Also split shot with a night crawler!💯
The best spot is the hydro power plant a little ways up from kernville. It’s not a dam, but where these big twin pipes come down the hill and go underground. On google maps it’s called “KR3 SCE Power Station”. It’s a bit hidden since you have to turn off from the main road right at the fish hatchery onto this small river-front road, but I think it’s a fish planting spot since it’s right by the hatchery.
@UCM-ygOxbsE5FxJUtPk413KQ Hmm, that’s odd, when I was there this summer it was the best spot on the whole river, the trout could not resist the salmon eggs, and there were very few people there as well, despite everywhere else on the river being super busy. What’s nice about the Kern River is that even if it’s slow you can head to the lake at night and try for catfish, they’re everywhere in the lake.
Pretty sure we fish that spot and it was quiet but next time up we'll be hitting all the spots again. I think we fished about 10 spots up there from below Isabella all the way to Roads end. Such a fun place to fish though no matter what
@@TroutWest Indeed, especially when those fighters jets fly overhead, those things put on quite the show
@@TroutWest They also stock the lake with trout, I caught a beefy three pounder in there once.
@MikeHunt-gh1sc Idk, when I was there a few years back that’s where I had the most luck. I caught a few at some upriver spots but the hydroelectric plant was definitely the best.
Beautiful up there, it's been years since I've visited, thanks
It's worth driving around up there this time of year even if you don't fish. great day trip for most of southern California
River trout like hanging out under the white water. Great video
Only two hours away not sure why I haven’t been up there. Big water, nice pools right off the campground. I’ll have to look into.
100% you should. You need to sync with the plants but the over all experience is pretty good. Lots of dogs in the lower campgrounds but uppers didn't have that issue. There's dispersed further up the canyon. its' legit.
I have not fished there sents I was a little kid back when grandparents live up on south side of Isabella
Nice trip beautiful county up there good to see you didn't get skunked. Stay safe my friend
Yeah 5 fish in an hour isn't too bad... probably could have caught 20 in that hole had we stayed. We wanted to explore some more that day so that's the trade off. Fun area though, ya'll should check it out. Nice camping
Nice casting🎣
Was fishing by hobo campgrounds past week. Caught A few trout off that fast waters
Nice catches. Looks like a peaceful place to fish.
Looks like a beautiful morning
Beautiful river. Glad you caught one.
It's pretty scenic in that canyon especially the upper portions of it.
Hey I live there to
Thanks for the update! When do you expect the big melt off to happen this year?
Depends on temps, but it's looking like 2nd week of April. Big Cold Front First week of April.
