Trowels are very useful tools. Your historic specimen has interesting geometry.

Very interesting rowan . Something that may interest you .I came across a Dutch article on the internet some time back regarding the correct handle angle for trowels . They reckon that when you turn a trowel over with the tip of the trowel on a flat surface the Handle should lay flat. I have tried this with various trowels including the Dutch Arnhem pattern Metseltroffel ( brick trowel) whs tyzack and Marshalltown and it seems to be the way it's done .

Greetings from a blacksmith student in Norway. :-) Nice work! impressive hammer accuracy on the set down over the anvils edge! I'm not that accurate so I prefer to use the guillotine. :-) though I should maybe practice on my accuracy.

Great video, very interesting watching historically accurate pieces being crafted. It's a wonderful insight into how everyday items would be nade. Great work.

Has anyone told you that you're like the Bob Ross of blacksmithing? Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thanks for the early morning inspiration!

They could of used a rough peice of sandstone or something similar to clean up the rough edges and to smooth it out a bit back in those days?

As a guitarist I get comments about my long fingernails on my right hand. As a human being I'm amazed how people think its any of their business, let alone advise you to cut them.

Hey, very good reproduction, do you know "the mastermyr find"?
Its a viking age chest full of Blacksmithing and carpenters tools, found on Gotland.
I'm looking forwards to your larger project!
    Greetings from germany, Edgar

So, question to anyone doing this sort of historical work in America, where do you get stock? I am having issues finding wrought iron stock in sizes like this.

Would the original have had a wooden handle (or possibly even leather) over the tang or would it have been left like it was after forging?

Would they have stuck a wooden handle over the tang originally?

I'm 100% sure that they would have. I was going to burn one on and shape it but had to go to a meeting in the afternoon for a job in March :/

You do a fair amount of historical stuff, just a fancy for wrought iron, or do you have a connection with the era ?

For anyone else who wants a copy of the archeological document, the medievalists.net article gives a dead link to archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/. With some Googling, I found the document at archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/archives/view/cba_rr/rr40.cfm. Enjoy!

I love your videos. I'm amazed at 2 things, how long the metal holds heat (in several videos) and when you cut with chisel how the piece stayed in place and not flinging though the aie

is that real wrought iron or is it mild steel? I thought that wrought iron sources are few and far between, such as wagon wheels or old fencing. Am here in the states, and I have heard of one company that can provide actual wrought iron, is that the same case where you are located?
