2023 Toyota GR Corolla: Close to The Perfect Blend of Livability, Affordability, and Fun

  • The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla just won our 10Best award, but so too have two other fun-do-drive cars that wear similar badging: The GR86 and GR Supra. It’s remarkable that Toyota’s three most recent sporty cars have all been knock-outs in their respective segments. That’s why each one is on our 10Best list, after all. But read between the lines and you’ll find something even more interesting.
The GR86 and GR Supra were made in partnership with other manufacturers, Subaru and BMW, respectively. The fact that the Supra's new six-speed manual transmission feels even better than BMW's version hints at Toyota's expertise in creating a satisfying driving experience. The GR Corolla confirms it.

I’m absolutely outraged that a regular person won’t be able to afford or even get their hands on these due to markups and limited supply. This release is gonna be worse than the type r where only influencers, the wealthy, and extremely lucky get these cars. Hell, I had a hard time getting a new BRZ, but ultimately decided on one because I knew I wouldn’t get one of these at sticker

100 percent. I was on a list for one of these. I was all set to sign the dotted line, then the dealer came back with a $30K upcharge. So much for affordability. This completely negates one of the main reasons consumers want this car, a fun, practical, affordable sports car. It's infuriating. I bought a manual regular corolla hatch from an independent seller instead. Quite a step down I know, but at least it has a stick and is fun to drive.

Agreed. I’ve just about unsubscribed from all of the big name automotive review channels as they all seem to live in a fantasy world. Fun to watch for a few I’m sure, but most consumers can’t afford what these reviewers show. If anything, they get people so enthusiastic that they’ll go out and buy overpriced/overhyped vehicles anyway. All that does is feed the wolves at the stealerships and maintains a bubble that desperately needs to burst.

The hell of it is, the GR Corolla as shown here isn't that much less expensive than my 2022 Genesis G70 V6 was, out the door (a couple ticks short of $50k), and my dealer didn't clobber me with a lot of add-on crap, over and above MSRP.

Could never blame someone for going that direction. G70 is a great looking and performing vehicle. But i think it's just a matter of different strokes. I can attest, I have driven and owned many different cars and trucks……from an e46 m3 when new, back in 04 (still regret selling it). To currently owning an R8 and bronco raptor, with many different sedans, couples, suvs in between. I can confidently say this gr is one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven. I legitimately havnt giggled in car like I did in this thing in a very long time. The last two cars pops to mind, a 458 Italia that a friend let me beat up, and my e46 to quite honest…..and that’s what this gr reminds me of the most, the dynamics and fun of that m3, expect much grippier with the awd. It’s really a hoot. All these ppl complaining about the markups, yes it sucks…..but the other reality is that these GRs Will most likely hold great value. As nice as this gentleman’s genesis is, it won’t have the same desirability/collectibility in the future. This thing is “hand made” for heavens sake. It’s a special drivers car.

For everyone discussing market adjustments you can actually find a decent amount of 23 circuit editions for sale between 44-50 with 1,000 to 5,000 miles on them. I found a dealership that does not apply market adjustments and my 24 circuit comes in by the end of April. I've had my deposit in since mid December, so that is really not too bad of a wait. I make inquiries to 4 dealers. None of now if they would even get one. No dealership contacted me to say they are expecting one. You have so many other choices. Toyota is also contributing to the problem by keeping production low. I will stick with Mazda the cx 70 will be my next car.

What is strange? Two companies built a low volume sports car together to save money. It’s been done many times. Hell, Porsche straight up built a Mercedes sedan many years ago.
Toyota has been building corollas for decades. They’ve also built many cars with turbos and awd, like the celica.
