Really neat to watch- especially with two excellent teachers discussing how to improve!

Thank you for sharing this particular part of Charlotte's master class in NY. We love to watch it once and again.

The congruency of mind/body for this connection to be experienced by two beings as one is just mind blowing. Dressage in its purest form is not a sport. It becomes art. The original purpose was war. It is still celebrated by true Spanish Horseman today. Merlin the bullfighting stallion for example. One cannot fight a battle or a bull and also fight their horse or the consequences are deadly.

There's nothing like half pass to test the riders symmetry.

How do I teach a green horse lead changes

Through counter canter. You have to work at CC for a few months, from 2 to 4, until he is very well balanced. That means that you don’t feel, like the horse is tipping over (when he is ripping over his body turns hard and rigid) but you will feel that he basically can do it as comfortably as the regular canter. After that you use the corners. Get to the corner in CC and ask for the change just before the corner. It will be the natural, instinct of the horse to make a lead change there so you take advantage of that. Nuno de Oliveira had this additional trick. Teach him to go from walk to canteen before the corner that you’ll use to ask for the lead change. His mind will be ready to,pick up that inside lead. Do that over and over until,he has engraved that in his mind and then do as I said before in that corner.

If the horse is green it doesn’t need to learn lead changes. It’s not ready
