  • Hope you all enjoy the vlog! Apologies for how rambling the nipples section was, watching it back I wish I had spoken more concisely but it was a reflection of feeling flustered at the time. The point I want to make is how much I understand that aesthetically not wearing a bra isn't for everyone - I fully appreciate why. I want to be able to share with you all what I love to wear at any given moment, and what I genuinely wear day to day and this is the look I like, and I am frustrated that it seems harder to do that on here than in real life. As always I love reading your opinions and value them so, so much - and I hope we can make this a productive discussion . Thank you all so much for watching, as always. xxx

    Yasssss Lizzy! I am so envious of those who go braless all of the time, I wish I had the confidence though I'm sure some day I will. Wearing a bra is rubbish tbh and those who have an issue seeing a nipple (which the majority of us biologically have) need to ask why they have such a problem with it. It's just a nipple?? If they're making it an overly sexual thing, then, as you say, that's their issue, not yours :) Lovely video as always! xx

      It's completely up to the person, regardless of 'ruining' your boobs (what does that even mean anyway?) as it's their preference and their own body. I've also read research that says opposite, that going braless is completely fine and actually helps to strengthen the chest muscles. Some even say it makes their boobs perkier :) Either way, I honestly don't think it's down to anyone else apart from Lizzy to decide what she does with her own boobs tbh and no amount of scaremongering is going to change that

    Not everyone is going to agree with the choices you make and that's okay. I personally am not a fan of the no bra look, and that's okay too.
    It's your decision whether you want to do it or not because it's your style, your channel and your life.
    I'd say to ignore the comments completely but that can be hard to do... Do you. ♥

    Loving the fact that the VLOGS are back!! I couldn’t agree more regarding your frustrations on going/being braless!! Why is it is an issue, it really shouldn’t be. I’ve been going braless more and more, and feeling confident and comfortable doing so. Which you have influenced, so thank you!! Keep creating what you love and you feel inspired by at that point in time!! X

    I very rarely comment on videos, Lizzie but I am an avid watcher and I love your style. I don’t wear bras very often and I also love the aesthetic. I recently started working full time and find that people do stare in certain outfits so I’ve had to buy some cotton bralettes but it’s so unfair. I see men’s nipples all the damn time and nobody cares but as soon as it’s a woman’s it becomes ‘indecent’ in the workplace. I hate how women’s breasts are overly sexualised and the people complaining about you not wearing a bra should be ashamed of themselves for making you feel conscious. Keep doing what you’re doing as you always look flawless. Thank you for the endless inspiration! 😘

    Always so pleased when you post something new. You are currently what draws me to YT at all. I’m not too excited about other channels at the moment, not since I found yours. You raised the bar and now I only want the type of quality content you create. A very nice problem to have I must say!

    If I were you I would just stop addressing the whole bra/ braless issue and wear whatever the hell you want. If someone comments that it’s hard to look you in the eye, that’s because their own misogyny or narrow-mindedness is blinding them.

    I have been thinking about this video and the topics raised all night and cannot sleep because it is going round and round in my brain. I think the comments that sexualised you and your body parts were verging on sexual assault. If they said that to your face it certainly would be considered as that and I think it would make you feel intimidated and uncomfortable. I am very glad you’re talking about this, Lizzie, because these people have to be called out and it’s a very important conversation. I hope you hold your ground and do not continue to feel uncomfortable because that is not right. Keep doing what you’re doing :) Amy xxx

    Love you Lizzie ! and you are so right, I wish you wouldn't worry, so many of us are on your side, agree or disagree with your choice without feeling the need to express it in a negative manner. I have really been enjoying not wearing a bra too, first because I don't really feel like I need it, and because I like the effortlessly casual look. I am more and more confident everyday, I don't even notice it. I don't understand why people feel they have a say on what you wear or not. Especially in 2018, aren't we now accepting everyone for who they are or want to be ? And people are getting upset over a piece of fabric ? Please don't feel you have to change anything, love you just the way you are ;-)

    I'm with you 100%, Lizzy. I practically never wear bras anymore. Not just for "aesthetic" reasons, but also for comfort and health. Another commentator suggested it might have something to do w/ your camera angles. + I think I know exactly what video he/she is referring to. It can be a little distracting at times, but never offensive. It would feel like a kind of "loss" to see you change your style so as not to "alienate" the portion of your viewers who don't support you for you. #FreeTheNipple

    My thoughts on nipple-gate ... I think it would be less of an issue if this is something that you had done regularly from the start and not something that seems to have come about now that you are single and perhaps too if it is something that you do often when not wearing tops that aren't a bit see thru. To me it doesn't necessarily come off as authentic and more like chasing a trend, which is 100% okay, but not everyone reacts positively to change ... maybe if you spoke more about the why and moaned less about the reactions it would permanently change the tone/dialogue. I also have a bit of a problem with the whole trend because it really only favors those with young, perky breasts so while it is a bit feminist it really is also in line with typical societal conditioning bs ... perhaps that is where the alienation comes from? One last thought, you say it isn't about sexualization of the nipple, but I think the sexualization come naturally from the projected confidence and the scarcity of bra-less women, we are as humans designed to notice what is off/different ... whether intended or not.

    • @CriticalRelativist
      @CriticalRelativist 6 років тому

      I think the young, perky breasts are getting a lot of the attention, but that doesn't mean that only those people are going braless. It's more comfortable to go braless, whether you fit the "ideal" or not... and the look is fashionable, even for women with larger breasts, I believe. I really think getting over the nipple taboo will improve the lives of all women... and hopefully make it less frustrating for women even with less perky breasts.

    I"m glad you addressed this. Looking at the comments, it looks like some people still don't get it - just because it's your ~opinion doesn't mean that it contributes to the conversation. And there's a difference between sharing an opinion and making comments that just aren't constructive and can make someone feel bad. It's so disheartening that the shame some people feel about their own bodies is starting to affect you, too. It's not about just disagreeing. It's about spreading that insecurity onto other people in a way that can be pretty thoughtless.
    I'm sorry you're having to go through all this reading the comments, but I'm glad that the conversation about what is (or should be) acceptable about a person's body is happening. I think a lot of us who watch you, including your younger viewers, really value your content and the personality you put into your work. This is just one small part of that. I personally totally get it when you say you like the look. It's a little slouchy, a little more casual, a little louche that you can't really get any other way. And at the end of the day they're just tits, ffs.

    saying you can't look woman in the eyes because she's bra less is incredibly demeaning and rather perverse; and if you make comments like that or think they're okay you can square up. So sorry you had to deal with something like that Lizzy

    I absolutely love that you don't wear a bra. I hate wearing bras and go braless all the time but I'd always felt a little "unfashionable" when I did because it was so hard to find fashion content online that promoted or highlighted going braless. Far from alienating me, you've made me feel so damn accepted and included!!!

    So I have thought a fair amount about this video and your response. I truly view your work as art and the purpose of art is to visually display a point of view, a perspective. Your choice to show your nipple or go braless or however we want to phrase that is an artistic choice. The gray comes in because you are your art and so I think others feel that they can criticize because you are Lizzy the fashion blogger, just a person living and documenting her life through a fashion lense. I don't. I think you are creating a visual perspective and I think you need to keep doing that. I love you blog and videos! Lots of love from LA!

    If I wear a bra without padding and there's a gust of chilly wind or if I wear a bathing suit to the beach and the water is cold, my nipples will show. It is not sexual. I shouldn't have to police my body to that extend, that even when covering up my body, it would still be considered shameful when things happen that are out of my control. I can't control the wind or the water or if my nipples get hard for whatever reason. I have never been very sexual in my way of dressing or being, but I have always preferred the look and feel of bras without padding - but it has never been about bringing focus to my nipples, like some weird conspiracy to entice poor innocent men or whatever. It is frustrating if people feel like that.

    I know this is an old vid.. but I wonder if it comes down to jealousy/envy? I personally am much bustier and cannot style a tank like you, but wish I could. It does mean that when you do a braless look, I'm automatically excluded and can't recreate it, but that could be said of someone who doesn't suit straight jeans, or longline blazers. Just wondered if that might help rationalise/explain the frustrating comments? I'm more jealous of those Wimbledon seats though, looks amazing!!

    There was a point in time when showing your ankles was considered inappropriate. That was also the time when women had no rights, but were constricted to follow rules and restrictions of society. We are supposed to represent a new, modern culture with its liberal and open-minded point of view. But underneath the image, are we all just conformists?

    You’re not rambling at all! Not a ramble. In fact it was such an articulate way to address the bra no bra thing (why is it a thing?) Thanks for addressing important issues in your vlogs, because the bra debacle is part of a bigger issue around expectations of women and control over their image/sexuality/body. Sexualising bodies that are just bodies. Fear and shame of the body, especially the female body. If people have a problem with it stuff them, their problem not yours, exactly as you said. Love your vlogs Lizzy, you seem like such a top person. Hope you’re doing well and it’s nice to see the vlogs trickling back in! Xx

I'm soo curious about the 'doing not so serious work in front of tele' bit, since I always want to know more about the behind the scenes and I'm sure a lot of ppl would like to know too. So, f.e. What do you categorize as "light work"? How long does it take you do finish that, OR could you just show as an sample example like "this would be my reply to this work cooperation request" (or similar), I'm curious about the wording here, the tactics maybe etc. XO X (also would be happy if you'd reply more often to comments

    I love that you don't wear a bra - I don't a lot of the time either (she types whilst at work, white tee - NO BRA)! As you said, it says more about the trolls than it does about you, someone else's sexualisation of your body is an inappropriate double standard and a projection of their perversions and discomfort onto you. As Patricia would say - nipples to the wind baby! Love your content Lizzy, sending love from NZ xxx

    You look fabulous. Wear whatever you want. To those that keep saying “how come no one has a problem with a mans nipple” and sincerely feel like there’s no difference-Sorry, you’re missing out on a beautiful part of a woman’s own sexuality and that a female breast is sensual. Seeing it/ noticing it reminds people of that, they’re not pervs for goodness sake. Some might be nervous by it, some might appreciate it, and some might not give a second look. Who cares. Saying that going braless is “brave”,,,,That’s perplexing. Those saying it’s “brave” have also established it’s ridiculous for others to suggest there’s a difference between a man’s and woman’s. So if it is a nonexistent issue, why is one brave? As a woman, I’ll wear what I want. I base it on the environment, the people involved, the occasion, if it is while I am “on the job” or on my own time. Everyone’s choice is her own and everyone else will have their opinions. And that’s ok. That’s part of what makes life interesting. Social media, where we have communities of for the most part strangers, there is safety in anonymity, and some forget to play nice. No matter differing opinions, we can have them without verbally slapping those that differ from ones own. That’s the part of nipple-gate that’s driving me crazy.

    Regarding nipples. Are viewers being mean or sharing their honest opinion? If the comments were all compliments specifically about nipples would that be acceptable?
    I myself like to read comments and hear the honest commentors view.

      I don't ever want to discourage people sharing their honest opinion, and you are right that if it was constant compliments it would also be an issue because of how much it is a point of discussion. Lizzy Hadfield that’s exactly what’s happening though. People are commenting on it the way they comment on other looks. Likes, dislikes, and why... isn’t that the normal engagement? I get why it’s annoying or frustrating that comments revolve around your breast, but it’s kind of like if you wore a certain type of trouser and people said it made your legs look long. The look intentionally draws the eye, and I feel like the remarks are mostly fair.

      Personally i skip the bra at any chance I get, nevertheless I only do it when its the least noticeable. In the last video it caught my attention because the top was tight fitting and a bit see through, therefore not wearing a bra made it seem somehow cheaper and that’s my main criticism on that matter. Lizzie is a girl with a great eye for fashion and a big inspiration for me actually, but I think I have to disagree with her choice in the last video because it almost seemed to go against her own quality ideals regarding clothing due to the sheerness of the top and the choice of not wearing a bra that made it something much more noticeable. In a black top for example I doubt it would have such an amount of criticism

    Nipplegate - I wonder if you are getting more comments on UA-cam vs real life because in real life people see all of you - top to bottom - and then pass you by. In your haul video and others I noticed that, at times, the whole screen is filled with the chest area. Perfectly understandable if you are showing us a necklace or something. But the visual focus on our screens here is more focused on one body part or area. And for several seconds at a time. Which doesn't happen on the street. Does that make any sense? 🤔

    I do not wear a real bra anymore because they hurt and are ill fitted no matter how many times I have gotten my size checked by professionals. Now I mostly use barrettes and if I have to I use wireless bras. All this and I do not even have big breasts (B-cup). I think people who have to ruin every little thing for others are called wankers (from what I have picked up from watching British panel shows). Ignoring them is difficult but I hope they'll go away to their miserable unless life and leave you alone. If they do not like your current look they should avoid going to the beach were there are quite a lot of men going topples aka nipples galore.

    Why do people constantly feel the need to criticize women for the way they dress themselves? Anyone can choose what content they want to watch, so there really is no reason to body shame, ever! I find it so frustrating that we always talk about needing to support and empower other women, yet some women can't seem to stop putting others down based on their appearance.

    I just found it unnecessarily distracting. I was being honest. I lived through the 60s and I have no problem if you don't want to wear a bra, I personally don't find it aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Just giving my opinion in the world of free speech. You are a very attractive girl just ignore me if you don't like my views. It wasn't personal.

      @Sarah Gill If a man goes without an undershirt, people won't find it 'distracting'. However, when a woman goes without a bra, it is 'distracting'. The fact that you find it 'distracting' in the first place says something about how you prioritize your attention. You are consciously putting more attention to it than it deserves. The matter itself should not have any positive or negative connotation attached to it, to begin with.

Of course I always appreciate your opinion, and while I am not trying to discourage people from sharing them the point I wanted to make was that I wish people could look past it as it seems so much more of an issue for me online than in day to day. I don't want anything to distract from my content, but I do want to share things as I am wearing them in real life while understanding people aren't always going to like what I wear as much as some other things. Me addressing this is about engaging with people's views too, not ignoring them too. xx

      Sarah Gill She said she was not gonna change it and that those comments make her really uncomfortable and yet you still felt it was necessary to point it out again? Do you actually know how rude that is? Yeah in the name of freedom of speech you can say a lot of bad shit and be disrespectful to people. Doesn't mean that the content of your "speech" is utter garbage and really uncalled for. One might assume people with your age and life experience would know better.

    I think people have issues with women’s nipples showing because they’re part of a sexual organ for human sexuality. Men’s nipples don’t have the same connotation of sexual organ. It would be as if we could see a man’s testicles. Yes, most men have them, but it’s not something that everyone would be comfortable seeing on camera. Obviously breasts have other biological functions (like feeding babies), but they are also part of sex. It’s an interesting discussion. You’re lovely and doing great either way 👍

    • @hildee8802
      @hildee8802 6 років тому +24

      I don't agree that breasts are a "sexual organ" or the same as seeing a mans testicles at all. Testicles can be compared to vaginas. Nipples can be compared to nipples. Breast are made to feed babies. Yes breast are what we call an erogenous zone. Meaning it is sensitive. So are also the mouth, neck, ears, abdomen, sacrum, arms, armpits, fingers, legs and feet. Yet nobody finds it weird to see an ear.

    • @rlavelleSLP
      @rlavelleSLP 6 років тому +10

      Hilde Elisa K Of course breasts are part of female sexual anatomy- that is why they develop during puberty and not before, and often coincide with the onset of menstruation. They’re a sign of sexual maturity and are a visual cue for sexual arousal in men. That’s just basic science. The primary function of a penis is to excrete body waste via urination, but when you see a penis I doubt that you’re thinking of urination. Body parts can be multi-functional. I don’t see anyone touting to “free the penis for urination” because most people associate the penis with (you guessed it)- sex.
      I lean left politically and completely support Lizzie in anything that she wants to wear or do with her body. I didn’t write the comment on the last video nor like it. But I will also defend other people’s right not to want to see a woman’s exposed breasts for other than breastfeeding given their own cultural, social, or personal reasons. ❤️

      rlavelleSLP I think you have worded your replies and supported them absolutely wonderfully. we live in a society where everyone has to be OK with everything otherwise we are small minded but the fact is sitting in a coffee shop with your nipples visibly poking through your shirt in front of many generations of people really isn't OK..small kids right through to elderly men and women. Do what you want at home but there is a reason the nipple white tank top is a regular feature on the front cover of FHM and that's because it is considered to be sexual. it's like going to a family resort and having that 1 woman that has to lay there topless. time n place !

    • @mirpi1693
      @mirpi1693 6 років тому +4

      Sure, growing breast are one sign of sexual maturnity. But the nipples are there from the day we are born. And both men and women have them. Or is it ok for people with small breast to show their nipples? Even women? Some overweight men have big breast, should they wear a bra too?
      I think a better comparison would be our butts. (Not testicles) We all have them. They can be sexy on both men and women and both men and women do wear tight trousers. Why is that ok? Why are the female nipple such a big deal?

    • @tb564
      @tb564 6 років тому +1

      Hypothetical: Would you never give a second thought to having your daughter/ teens nipples visible in tops? I'm not saying there is a particular right answer to this question. But, at this point in time many cultures have an idea about a woman's anatomy.
      I believe it is okay for any woman to express themselves however they see fit. However, I do think you have to deal with how expansive view points will be when you're not in your immediate friend group. People are writing what they probably think in public. At this point in time many cultures are going to view not wearing a bra on some level as taboo and inherently this action is a political statement. You are allowed to be upset about rude senseless comments. But I believe it is also admirable to not complain excessively about this privilege(to not wear a bra). To feel safe and comfortable while partially exposing your nipples ,when so many cannot. So many people are born without the language or education, good examples, body type, "good" face, correct accent, correct age, that allows them to be well liked or inoffensive to the majority. So what if everyone doesn't give you a high five for not wear a bra.

    Lizzy, I'm not used to commenting on your videos, even though I watch every single one of them, but I really felt like saying this. The fact that you decide to wear a bra or not should entirely be up to you and you shouldn't be questioning it because of some random sexist person commenting that "it's hard to look you in the eye".
    If people are sexualizing your "no bra look" it is not because of your doing, it's a misogynisic mindset that has to be changed. So please don't apologize about being bra-less.
    I started going bra-less before watching your videos but felt more and more comfortable doing it thanks to you. I 100% agree with the comment saying that your message is empowering and important for women and girls. Jacky W. A lot of it has to do with the "pick-me" culture of women sadly. This issue with the nips and going braless is always going to be an issue for some. I am twice your age and have been going braless at times of my choosing all my life. It has obvious that for some to see a braless woman is uncomfortable. I work in an office and generally wear a bra when I feel it is needed. When I choose to not wear one outside of work I am comfortable both physically and mentally. I have found it to be one of those things you just have to shrug off. Its not up for discussion with me. Accept that everyone has a right to their opinion and its only that. It may not be worth commenting on. The way you choose show yourself to the world is what makes you real. Others have a choice to look or not. I will choose to continue watching this channel because I find inspiration.

    Personally I have really small boobs so I don't need to wear a bra...it's painful when I wear one because of my bones just under my boobs and since they are so small they never fit the bra 😂 Anyway. My point is, when you have the same size as mine, a bra is only to look prettier. That's all. It's not comfortable and it does nothing for your body. It's only according to what you wear (even though you can always put nipple cover instead of a bra). Do you see what I mean?
    I never wear a bra at home, and since I'm on vacation it's been like 3 weeks now without wearing a bra 😂

UA-cam is a public platform where everyone can interact, so yes, we are expected to subscribe, give a thumbs up, share, click on the link down below, check their Facebook, Instagram, Tweeter, Depop, they put ads in our faces but as soon as we express ourselves there seems to be a problem. I only wear a bra to work, and usually those are just little thin bralettes. I have bigger boobs too (a D cup). People need to chill out! Do whatever you want. Nipples are not sexual, and women shouldn’t have to wear more than one layer of cloth over our boobs to be appropriate in public.

    It’s just not the norm to go braless and have visible nips so people are going to look and have an opinion. It’s the same with big tattoos, multiple visible piercings, people with a ton of kids, pregnant women in their late 40s, age gap couples, people letting their kids run wild in a restaurant. If it isn’t the norm it’s going to get attention and commentary. Mostly bad. People don’t like a disregard for social norms!

    • @Cloudburst2000
      @Cloudburst2000 6 років тому +1

      I agree with most of these, but letting your kids run wild in a restaurant is not okay when they are interrupting other people's meals. Letting your kids run wild in a restaurant is not that it is not the norm, it is that it is just plain rude. None of the others are rude by any means. If people don't like tattoos, piercings, braless womenn, etc, then that is solely their problem. It doesn't really affect them other then not agreeing with their 'style'. However, kids running loose in restaurants affect everyone eating there...interrupting meals, accidentally tripping patrons/servers, etc. It is just rude. People should keep their kids under control when out in public.

    I'm one of those 'not normally a commenter' folks but just wanted to say how frustrated I feel for you that you are being made to second guess your style choices due to the comments about going braless. I can't imagine how soul destroying it must feel when this dominates your experience, when you clearly work so hard on creating really great, innovative and engaging content. Your choosing to go braless is in fact something that I honestly have never considered whilst watching you. I think it says more about those with an issue with it than it does about you. Your aesthetic is yours and yours alone and that is what is so great about your approach to fashion. I don't always feel that I want to make the exact same style choices as you but that's ok, we aren't clones. What I do get from your content is your sense of creativity and confidence in your fashion choices, which gives me the courage to try different stuff out too. I also love that you are clearly an ace human with a lot about her. The fact you choose sometimes to ditch the bra is totally normal as far as I'm concerned. I go braless all the time. I have barely any boob to speak of so perhaps it's less noticeable but that doesn't make it any more or less acceptable. Anyway, this is becoming a huge ramble. In short, I really respect your openness to understanding those frustrating comments but I'd encourage you to try not to internalise them and certainly don't let them censor you. You are ace, with or without a flipping bra on. x

    I think we alllll need to not take comments and nipples so personal. I get it's bothersome, it's even bothersome to read the comments and have yet another discussion about people not liking the fact that you don't wear a bra. People come from all different backgrounds on here (not just western ones) and so their points of view will differ and THEY might take offense to your content. That's on them! On the flip side, you need to think about where they might be coming from and detaching yourself from the negativity of the comment. Most likely, they are not trying to hurt you as a person and even if they were going out of their way to be mean, they literally do not know you. It's not even about you. You could be a walking set of nipples and they'd still be offended. This is truly coming from someone who thinks you rock the look, has no problems with nipples and is tired of hearing about it and talking about it. Detach yourself from the comments, we are but illusions on a virtual screen.

    Love you as always Lizzy. In the last few months I’ve found myself going braless more, which probably has much to do with your influence. For me, it’s learning to love the shape of my body under clothes, without the “perfect” round look from a shaped bra. Also, it’s way too hot in Dallas to bother with bras, if I can get away with it. Super helpful to be reminded that your intention isn’t to get sexual attention. It’s just such a sensitive topic as we are in an over-sexualized society where people do dress for sexual attention. Everyone will impose their ideas and ethics, best you can do is stay rooted in your motives for your fashion decisions, and remind us that it is simply another option.
