this was a song a dear friend referred to me as I go through some heavy treatments for MS, I requested my friends send me a song that meant something to them that could help me get through these tough times, I have to admit I like this song ALOT
Recently I caught these two on ACL, mesmerizing harmonies and musicianship, just simply blown away! People who say that music is dying need to just look a little harder to find groups like this, they are gems.
I love that when I watched this a year ago, it had absolutely no comments, and that now their videos are filled with praise. They're finally getting some of the attention that they deserve for this beautiful song writing!
Great writers always make great music, great books, great movies, great sit-coms. These two are awesome. Great music start to finish, every damn song they play!
Yeah man, maybe the Black Keys are good.....but they have NOTHING to do with this group or the comment!! So are a million other fucking bands good....wtf!!
Holy Shit.. that little vocal run Cary hits at 2:50 blows my mind, girls got some pipes! one of my new favorite bands.. I love these two.. and could watch this simple video over and over..
My goodness, I love Shovels And Rope. I don't have human words for the feeling I'm feeling right now. Cheers be to you and yours, you've made me a happy guy, at least temporarily.
seen these kids on Letterman too....instantly fell in love with them, as in their art that is.....wishing all the success and wonderful travels to the both....stay true to what you love.....
Is it just me or is Cary Ann Hearst not one of the cutest Women alive. I found their music a couple weeks ago, It is a Great change to the Pop Country these days, I hope they keep their Rough around the Edges Sound,
BTW, just got FB post that they are expecting a baby girl in September, and will be taking a few months off of the road. I THOUGHT that polka-dot dress was a little tight 2 weeks ago!
Since i first watched your video on YT performing live at Folk Alley Festival, I was awed by your great talent! I hope artists of your ranks would release records internationally including the Philippines. I love folk and country music so much!
Love, love, love them! Met them both after a Hayes Carll show in Fort Worth. Can't wait for them to come back to Texas to hear them rock out again. These two are going to go far.
Discovered these two in 2011 opening up for Justin Townes Earle @ Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto...JTE is a man of straight up great musical taste, so it makes sense he'd have these two on his bill. Very talented souls right here.
Yes, they are wildly talented-different, daring, original and with two beautiful voices together. Country songs with real bite-like the Pistol Annies. I'm a U.K. country/bluegrass fan, hope they'll tour England.
So about a month ago I left work to meet some friends at The Nick (Birmingham, AL) for a drink. As I walk in and look for my friends, I stop dead in my tracks and looking at the stage, just stand dumbfounded thinking, "Holy Shit. These guys are good." I didn't even bother finding my friends till they finished the song i walked in on. Bought 2 vinyls, a CD, and 3 t-shirts that night. These guys blew me away. Also, Cary, thanks for all the tips for when i visit charleston! You guys are the best.
AMAZING. my boyfriend and i went thru this whole song so we could write down all the lyrics, cuz theyre not available online ANYWHERE. this is an awesome frickin song, and so fun to play as a duet.
Well ain't it just like you and me to go down like that? Bleedin' out in a boxcar, shot in the back We were all out of luck, all out of time Law was waiting for us at the end of the line Any minute now we knew we was gonna have to decide... Take a fat chance and come out gunning? Or get out now and try to keep running down south? Then she said, "Hey hey cut the rope, there's no way I'm gonna let em get us both So don't stop running till you reach that coast, let your pretty mama go up in smoke." Coming out of the harbor was simple and new Clean as clear water you could see straight through But in that old dustbowl when the money got low It was all we could do to keep a nail in the floor It showed on her face, you could tell by the lines -these desperate times Pistol strapped and her hair was dyed, gonna make her money like Bonnie and Clyde We'll be alright. Until she said, "Hey hey cut the rope, there's no way I'm gonna let em get us both So don't stop running till you reach that coast, let your pretty mama go up in smoke." Don't let the sorrow of it get you down, change your last name and try your luck around And if they ever come to ask about me, tell em that you knew me and you kinda liked me I ain't afraid to go it on my own, you can make a run and make it all alone. You'll be alright. End of the line, the engine's still burning Just like the wheels, the hands keep turning Round and round Till time ran out She said, "Hey hey cut the rope, there's no way I'm gonna let em get us both So don't stop running till you reach that coast, let your pretty mama go up in smoke."
First time I ever heard her was the end credits on True Blood. They played Hells Bells. Literally made me stop dead in my tracks to listen. Seriously my favorite musicians ever.
Most underrated band EVER. Absolutely amazing live..cant wait to see you Under The Big Sky the Summer in Montana...what time is it in Montana when a sheep gets stuck in a fence? Mountain time!!! Lol.....GO COUGS

Nice. honest Americana, simple and beautiful. I consider myself lucky that I stumbled into you two.

That's a great sad song. Beautiful lyrics and of course Cary Ann's powerful voice is amazing. Michael is the perfect harmony

Yeah man, maybe the Black Keys are good.....but they have NOTHING to do with this group or the comment!! So are a million other fucking bands good....wtf!!
she's a bundle of dynamite
Mainstream music is not even a factor to me, it is thin, empty air. This is the real heart and soul of music.
Holy Shit.. that little vocal run Cary hits at 2:50 blows my mind, girls got some pipes! one of my new favorite bands.. I love these two.. and could watch this simple video over and over..
This song is so amazing, it haunts me! The lyrics, the harmonies, the rawness of it and of them! You two are my inspiration!!!!
I just cannot get enough of watching you two sing to each other!!!! You two! SO INTENTIONAL!!!

Curt Ekstrom Not just you, bro. Might have something to do with the reason that it's only June and I've seen them twice this year already. (:
I am hoping they get near Kansas City, it would well worth the drive to see them.
BTW, just got FB post that they are expecting a baby girl in September, and will be taking a few months off of the road. I THOUGHT that polka-dot dress was a little tight 2 weeks ago!
Yes. They would be amazing to see, and well-received in KC.

Came here out of curiousity because Loves Travel Stops play this song regularly. Good jam!
one of the best renditions of the past decade
People are going back to the roots of folk, country ,family made music,Thank God for them, try Ben Caplin ,Colter Wall too, they all fit together
2:57 made me trip out from the harmony and just full pure sound in her voice.
They are going to be in Atlanta on my birthday, at one of my favorite venues...so excited!
Love these guys still...
someone said they sounded like if dolly parton and bob dylan were stuck in an elevator with a guitar and a snare drum.....pretty accurate
And harmonica. . maybe more Allison kraus?

She doesn’t sound anything like dolly
