Bah Humduck was the first version of A Christmas Carol I ever saw and my first exposure to the Looney Tunes as a whole. My dad loved pointing out the different characters and telling me about them and showing me their shorts. I was hooked. As such, this movie still holds a very special place in my heart.
Personally I think it would’ve been a lot funnier if in Bah Humduck, the ominousness of the Ghost of Christmas Future was initially played completely straight, only for Daffy to briefly look away and the sinister Ghost to glance at the audience and reveal himself as none other than Bugs Bunny, following up on his earlier threat to Daffy. “Nyeh…ain’t I a stinker?”
fun fact! mel blanc's original voice for daffy was much slower and lower pitched. it evolved over time, but that original take was never forgotten because it became the basis for sylvester's voice. i doubt that's why he was chosen to play marley, but it's an interesting connection.
Being a 2000s kid, I remember "Bah, Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas" playing often every year around Christmas time on Cartoon Network. Daffy (my favorite Looney Tunes character) being the star and him being played by Joe Alaskey (the Daffy VA I grew up with, I would watch the Duck Dodgers cartoon that was airing around the same time) elevates it a bit for me. But it has been many years since I actually watched it in full, but I remember enjoying it for what it was when I did see it at my grandmother's place, it was definitely shorter than I remember though. Even though there isn't too much to talk about, it's nice to hear it being discussed online, as it rarely is. Really enjoyed Looney Tunes Show Christmas episode as well too, even more so. Thanks for for chewing into the bits of trivia regarding the different characters and specials, Colin.
Bah Humduck manages to be a nice modern and satirical version of A Christmas Carol, while managing to be its own thing. Plus, the also does a great job balancing the franchise’s iconic slapstick comedy and emotional drama.
Funny thing, I was literally watching Bah Humduck on DVD last night, and I was thinking to myself "I hope Colin gets around to talking about the 2 looney tunes Christmas carols". I remember watching the one with Yosemite Sam when it would play on Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Bah Humduck is the better one. My siblings and I grew up with the DVD, and I have a soft spot for it. I love Looney Tunes and it really has that classic Looney Tunes feel. I just love it when cartoons do their own take on A Christmas Carol and seeing them get creative with it. It's not the best version of a Christmas Carol, my personal favorites are The Muppets and Mickeys, but I still like Bah Humduck.
I love the Looney Tunes as much as you, Colin. So I’m very glad to see Bah Humduck finally get included in your So Many Christmas Carols series. That’s film is a family tradition for me and I still love it to this day. Thanks for covering it!
There were times when Daffy and Sylvester would interact with each other. For example, in the iconic short ‘The Scarlet Pumpernickel’, Sylvester would make a cameo in a few Daffy and Speedy cartoons, and there was even that one time they fought over a gold egg in a Daddy Duck Easter Special. Good Christmas video by the way.
I think he means in the context of this story, Daffy doesn't know Sylvester. Because Sylvester's not playing his dead partner, but the CEO of a different corporation.
As a recommendation, I would love to see you take a look at the 1997 animated Christmas Carol adaptation from DiC, which stars Tim Curry as Scrooge. I honestly think it is a very underrated version that barely anyone seems to remember, but as the very first one I saw as a child, it holds a special place in my heart.
One could argue that one of the biggest reasons the Looney Tunes shorts are funnier than the Disney shorts (with exceptions) is Walt Disney himself Leon Schlesinger (and to a degree Fred Quimby over at MGM) while a shrewd businessman, mostly was hands off with the actual creation of the shorts, he pretty much went, "so long as it makes money and doesn't get us in legal trouble, do whatever you want." whereas Walt Disney was a control freak (for good and bad) which is why for example, Mickey Mouse can come across as boring and it really isn't until Walt Disney steps away that the shorts get a lot funnier, especially Donald and Goofy because Walt didn't have this mania about preserving the image of Donald or Goofy the way he did with Mickey
I remember watching these. I loved how Bah Humduck showcased Daffy’s more softer qualities despite him still having his usual greed and inflated ego. I also liked the one with Yosemite Sam too, it honestly fits him quite well.
I liked Bah Humduck better because of the satirical take in working in retail! The part I can relate to the most was when Bugs and Daffy got themselves locked in the store on Christmas Eve! That's because that happened to me once! Unlike them, the assistant manager came back and unlocked the door so I could get out. I was only trapped for a half hour! 😂
Speaking of Looney Tunes, Animaniacs also did its own version of A Christmas Carol, where Thaddeus Plotz played Scrooge, Ralph the guard as Bob Cratchit, Slappy Squirrel as Jacob Marley, and the Warner Siblings as the Christmas Ghosts.
Thanks for the wonderful review and coverage! Bah Humduck is easily the best Christmas Carol Looney Tunes ever made! I still enjoy it and I must add it to my must buy list! Also, there was a time Disney attempted to make some satirical shorts similar to Looney Tunes; like a lot of goofy's How To shorts, including how to smoke, and tons of Donald that I would easily say we're good rivals to Looney Tunes.... for a time.😊
In my personal opinion the best part of the Looney Tunes show episode was the side plot with Foghorn Leghorn and Daffy Duck at the North Pole. That was always my favorite part of the Christmas episode. Bah Humduck was certainly an instant classic. I’ve watched it many times now and it still makes me smile every Christmas Eve! I’ve never seen the original cartoon. I’ll have to look into it. I still enjoyed this video a lot even though you only talked so little about the LTS episode.
As Disney has often been the top company to shape my childhood as a whole, Mickey's Christmas Carol was the very first version of A Christmas Carol I ever watched my whole life before reading different book versions and watching other film and tv special versions of the said story. But the Disney/Image Movers Digital version that starred Jim Carey as Scrooge will always be the one film version to trump all the rest.
I do have fond memories of this "Christmas Carol ". As kids, my brothers and I found the moment Bugs accidentally causes the carolers to hold a note too long, particularly funny.
I've never seen "Bah, Humduck!" but I've seen "Bugs Bunny's A Christmas Carol" many, many, many times, and it was a riot! 🤣 "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and "The Muppets Christmas Carol" were cute and heartfelt, but "Bugs Bunny's A Christmas Carol" got laughs! Another version of A Christmas Carol worth mentioning is the Animaniacs episode, "A Christmas Plotz," which cast Mr. Plotz in the role of Scrooge, Slappy Squirrel in the role of Marley, Wakko Warner as The Ghost of Christmas Past, his sister, Dot, as The Ghost of Christmas Present, and their oldest brother, Yakko, as The Ghost of Christmas Future. It had also featured Ralph the Guard and his family as The Cratchits. The special had reimagined the classic story as an upbeat musical comedy. It contains some emotional content but mostly laughs. Also, there's no suggestion that Slappy and Plotz had a deep personal relationship, as Marley and Scrooge did. Rather, it's Slappy being her usual, sarcastic self. Also, there's no mention of Master Fred, either. It's definitely worth a watch.
I love Looney Tunes, and speaking of which, you should do Yosemite Sam and the Gold River Adventure after Christmas, because it's from Sally Dark Rides.
I actually still have the 'That's All' -book! And I totally agree about the classic WB -characters, and I hope Pepe Le Pew sees a comeback just like Speedy. =)
A Christmas Carol version I watched recently was the animated 1997 version starring Tim Curry and Whoopi Goldberg as Christmas Present. People have described this as one of the "bad" versions, but I think it hits its mark pretty good for what is essentially "Christmas Carol, the Saturday Morning Cartoon." I like this additional scene taking place in a pub right before Marley's scene, and it has probably my favorite design for Christmas Future.
Since you've done "The Flintstones Christmas Carol", you should also look at "The Jetsons Christmas Carol". Yes, believe it or not, Hanna-Barbera also did an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic story featuring the Space Age counterparts to the Flintstones. It's actually just a regular episode of "The Jetsons" from when the series was revived in the 1980s. As you would expect, George Jetson fills the role of Bob Cratchit while Mr. Spacely is Scrooge, although none of them are renamed for the story; they just use their own names.
Whoever said that obviously didn't see the movie. Daffy mistreated his employees and was going to make them work on Christmas Day! In retrospect, the ghosts deserved to be a dong to Daffy!
"Bah Humduck!" was a fair special in my book. It got the job done with how it told the "Christmas Carol" story and I liked the creative decisions it took, including the use of a department store as its setting and the characters chosen for each role. And while the comedy isn't as strong as the classic Looney Tunes shorts, there were at least some decently funny moments, such as Sylvester/Marley's backstory and Taz as the Ghost of Christmas Future. The cameos were great, too. I haven't seen the Yosemite Sam short yet, though I vaguely remember seeing that Santa-Taz one that came with it. I also really need to see that "Looney Tunes Show" episode, if only for its "Peter Griffin Presents: The King and I" vibes.
I realize you overlooked how Bah Humduck’s version of Tiny Tim, that being Porky’s daughter, does not die when Daffy is being presented his fatal future.
Great video for your first official dive into the Looney Tunes franchise! Hope to see you talking about the gang more often! Could I suggest a few video ideas you could do with the Looney Tunes?
I'd say that Bugs Bunny Christmas special is a least a little better than the redubbed, reedited, oddly paced Looney Tunes specials of the era. Particularly that Halloween one. Though the Chuck Jones Coyote and Roadrunner is oddly the highlight. Though I give them credit for truncating the Christmas Carol story into a 6-7 minute short, even though it was from the decidedly less wacky later run. Bah Humduck, however, greatly benefitted from the great Looney Tunes resurgence from the 90's, coming off several cartoon series that played wonderful homage to the classic shorts, while being their own odd genre shows. Taz-Mania being an animated sitcom, Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries being self explanatory. I only saw that one once or twice, even though I owned the DVD but enjoyed it for being the 90's-00's Looney Tunes project for what it was. I will say the Animaniacs one, being a Looney Tunes sort of companion series, did manage to do the story better in a short amount of time, and definitely better than the original Bugs Bunny short.
As a huge and longtime fan of The Looney Tunes Franchise, and growing up with Bah Humduck, I respect your opinion that your not a huge fan of Bah Humduck. Personally, I thought it was an amazing movie! Sure, there are a few minor issues, like Priscilla felt more like an archetype than a acutal character, and there are a few gags that don't land. But, I still love the movie, and the emotional scenes were great, and love the obscure characters appearing in the movie! Also, I only saw Bugs Bunny Looney Christmas special, maybe once or twice, and I think all three shorts could have been great, but unfortunately it wasn't. The Roadrunner and Coyote segment was easily the best, but its wasn't that memorable, or even fun. So yea, Bah Humduck was easily the better of the two, Christmas Carol adaptations. And as for Looney Tunes standards go: Bugs Bunny Christmas Carol: Ok Bah Humduck: Amazing And as for Christmas Carol Adaptaion go: Bugs's Christimas Carol: Ok Bah Humduck: Great
Y'know, I'm gonna say this in favor of Bah Humduck. When I was a kid, it made me cry. Not because the rest of it was super deep, but with Porky and his daughter. The implication that Petunia passed kinda broke me when I saw it debut on Cartoon Network.
To be fair Speedy which was in Daffy's show made a cameo in the Bugs and Taz short of the special. So if it was a rights issue then it was to Daffy only.
I always thought that Pepe never creeped out Penelope because of his advances, but because he smells bad. If you take that out of the equation he'll have better success with her.
And yet that was supposed to be the comedy that he is so obvious that he is catching a cat with white paint on her back but people theses days think is inspiring theses self proclaiming nice guys like Titan from Megamind which that was never the case.
One thing I didn't like about Bah Humduck, in my personal opinion, is Bugs Bunny's voice. I just don't think Billy West does a good voice for him at all, it's way too nasally. Yes, I know he also voiced him on the iconic Space Jam, but I didn't like him there either.
I admittedly have a soft spot for Bah Humduck, and truth be told, it's mostly due to my own personal bias. This was I watch A LOT as a kid, and most of the movie I can recite word for word. I'd say as Looney Tunes movie it's one of the best. All the characters fell well represented, all the returning voice actors are still great, and Daffy Duck fans like myself definitely have something to look forward to with it. But as a Christmas Carol adaptation, it's not bad, just kinda bland. With the only novelty coming from the fact that it stars the Looney Tunes.
Unlike Disney short characters Looney Tunes can go back and forth to be heroes or villains which is how characters like Elmer and Yosimite can be good like in Space Jam 1 and 2 or bad like in Back in Action
Hey Colin how about a video about the Christmas Carol adaptation of Sabrina The Animated Series 😂That one is intressting because unlike other adaptations the treatments of the Scrooge character has no effect LOL.
while these days i love both when younger i was more a fan of the looney tunes and have a soft spot for bah humduck as a big fan of daffy duck(love both donald & daffy but compared to mickey/bugs with how donald gets enough compensation after fighting for it while daffy gets at times sad with his insecurities that i loved the most with back in action finally giving him proper respect/the underrated duck dodger's being the duck getting his starlight handling the emotional moments well with how compared to disney mixing both lt's usually leans towards comedy.:3) & being enjoyable with how the looney tunes were up and down wavering in relevance though for as eh as i found looney tunes show outside a few moments love it's christmas episodes/songs.
I remember the part where Future Alvin ate the entire Christmas dinner by himself except the brussel sprouts which he hates! It resulted in him being fatter than Theodore! 😂
It seems that there has to be a Christmas Carol adoption every year? You know I like your Disney villains retrospective because I wonder if you would do a Dreamworks villains retrospective and Illumination’s villains as well but not now since we have Shrek 5 being wish I think the forth movie was a real final chapter. What do you think about the Nightmare before Christmas movie is it a Christmas or a Halloween or is it both? Have you heard of this fan theory on Jafar being the real hero of Aladdin?
@@srstriker6420 that's the thing one it's a theory that makes no sense on par with the Rugrats theory or Ash in a comma And 2 pardoy is not canon that's like saying the Robot Chicken sketches are canon . But really Jafar is no hero As Jafar tricks Aladdin Into giving him the lamp and then for no good reason tries to Kill him. And tries to forcely get Jasmine to marry him and is sexist . Plus when Jafar was Saltin he would only do things that benefitted him and Iago not the kingdom.
It depends if you like Bah Humduck or not. But, its defitinetly worth watching! Besides, its best to form your opinion, rather than agreeing the youtuber, and claim it as your own opinion.
Maybe Loonatics Unleashed would've been more sucsessful with their own christmas special? They fit each character into superhero archatypes easily! Especially egotistic buttmonkey daffy.
Is the next Disney villains retrospective is beauty and the beast since this is the perfect time to have Forte in this because there is a Christmas special of beauty and the beast called enchanted Christmas
I think even though Bugs Bunny is the mascot of Warner Bros., that Daffy Duck makes just as effective of a mascot for Looney Tunes as a franchise. It’s his more raw personality traits that distinguish it from other cartoon entities, especially Disney. Bah Humduck feels pretty meh to me though, taking too long to start and straining under the tonal balance.
Yeah, after the end of theatrical run Looney Tunes were just blatantly... tired. Weird that WB didn't simply bring in new talent cuz Fritz and the rest have burnt out (Can anyone even count all the shorts they made over the decades?!). It wasn't until 90's when WB cartoons would once again have good quality humor.
When it comes to animation... 1st special is far more in line with theatrical shorts. They never prioritized fluidity (and polished look), that was more of a Disney thing.
You'll have to wait. He's doing Darkwing Duck villains next. Gaston should come afterwards in release order, unless there's another TV show or something.
Bah Humduck was the first version of A Christmas Carol I ever saw and my first exposure to the Looney Tunes as a whole. My dad loved pointing out the different characters and telling me about them and showing me their shorts. I was hooked. As such, this movie still holds a very special place in my heart.
It was my first exposure to the Looney Tunes too.
That's really sweet. It's a yearly rewatch for my family and me.
It was my favorite version for a while, until I found the Muppet version.
Honestly making taz him was different, and bugs have other rivals than just daffy! Yes?
I am pretty sure that very same thing has happened in other Christmas Carol adaptations, like the 101 Dalmatians TAS one.
Yeah, I think that would make sense.
fun fact! mel blanc's original voice for daffy was much slower and lower pitched. it evolved over time, but that original take was never forgotten because it became the basis for sylvester's voice. i doubt that's why he was chosen to play marley, but it's an interesting connection.

Bah, Humduck! was always one of my favorites since I was a kid, used to look forward seeing it every year.
It’s such a great film that no one barely talks about, I’m happy that it’s getting a bit more recognition 😊
One could argue that one of the biggest reasons the Looney Tunes shorts are funnier than the Disney shorts (with exceptions) is Walt Disney himself

I Love Looney Tunes
As Disney has often been the top company to shape my childhood as a whole, Mickey's Christmas Carol was the very first version of A Christmas Carol I ever watched my whole life before reading different book versions and watching other film and tv special versions of the said story. It's bonkers that I've never seen any of these!!!!

Good to see another upload, Colin. Keep up the good work and Happy Holidays :)
I saw Bah Humduck on Netflix years ago!
Ooh forward by Ray Bradbury neat
I remember this one guy saying that Bah Humduck was a bad special because everyone ganged up on Daffy and was “a dick to him for no reason”.
Whoever said that obviously didn't see the movie. Daffy mistreated his employees and was going to make them work on Christmas Day! In retrospect, the ghosts deserved to be a dong to Daffy!
For something fun talk about the Arthur episiode where ghosts gace Punella sees what Francine went through to get her birthday gift .
"Bah Humduck!" was a fair special in my book. Walt Disney popularized animation. Then WB just followed in those extremely profitable footsteps.
As a huge and longtime fan of The Looney Tunes Franchise, and growing up with Bah Humduck, I respect your opinion that your not a huge fan of Bah Humduck.

To be fair Speedy which was in Daffy's show made a cameo in the Bugs and Taz short of the special. So if it was a rights issue then it was to Daffy only.
There’s also “The Legend of Burrito Monday” from Wabbit/New Looney Tunes.
Bahumduck another Cartoon Network Classic
Both the Looney Tunes Christmas movies should be played on Boomerang channel and on ACME Night on Cartoon Network.
I always thought that Pepe never creeped out Penelope because of his advances, but because he smells bad. If you take that out of the equation he'll have better success with her.

6:53: Mystery Science Theatre 3000, anyone?
🎵They tried to kill him with a forklift! Olé!🎵
Are you gonna talk about the Jim Carrey Christmas Carol?
7:06
I’ve seen 100 versions of A Christmas Carol
One thing I didn't like about Bah Humduck, in my personal opinion, is Bugs Bunny's voice. I just don't think Billy West does a good voice for him at all, it's way too nasally. Yes, I know he also voiced him on the iconic Space Jam, but I didn't like him there either.
Fun fact: this movie is the last time Billy has ever voiced bugs.
Hey these are back!
I remember Cartoon Network airing this one. Can’t remember if I liked it or not…
It looks like the Looney Tunes Christmas Carol had both version
I admittedly have a soft spot for Bah Humduck, and truth be told, it's mostly due to my own personal bias. This was I watch A LOT as a kid, and most of the movie I can recite word for word. honestly I feel like it would have suited Speedy Gonzalez as Marley given the double act show you mentioned.
Unlike Disney short characters Looney Tunes can go back and forth to be heroes or villains which is how characters like Elmer and Yosimite can be good like in Space Jam 1 and 2 or bad like in Back in Action
quackity quackity from Blooms
4:38 - 5:43 that is deep
Have you ever covered the Alvin and The Chipmunks Christmas Carol Yet?
I love that one!
I remember the part where Future Alvin ate the entire Christmas dinner by himself except the brussel sprouts which he hates! It resulted in him being fatter than Theodore! 😂
@@melissacooper8724 That's Karma for Alvin.
Can u do smurfs Christmas carol
Will you do more script to screen
It seems that there has to be a Christmas Carol adoption every year?
You know I like your Disney villains retrospective because I wonder if you would do a Dreamworks villains retrospective and Illumination’s villains as well but not now since we have Shrek 5 being wish I think the forth movie was a real final chapter.
What do you think about the Nightmare before Christmas movie is it a Christmas or a Halloween or is it both?
Have you heard of this fan theory on Jafar being the real hero of Aladdin?
I dont get the real hero as Jafar was powerhungert if he was a hero the first thing he woudl have done his make the poor less poor
Well maybe you should check out the theory and the parody Twisted
@@srstriker6420 that's the thing one it's a theory that makes no sense on par with the Rugrats theory or Ash in a comma
And 2 pardoy is not canon that's like saying the Robot Chicken sketches are canon .
One I'd like to see your opinion on the musical Netflix one, simply titled "Scrooge"
Personally, I always thought Sam was an odd choice to play one of the Christmas ghosts. I’d have switched his role with Sylvester’s.
I think Yosemite Sam would've made a good Marley!
It was certainly because of the looks, the beard in particular.

Duck
Next you need to talk about Diesel's ghostly Christmas it's an episode of Thomas the tank engine were Diesel fills the scrooge roll.
I haven’t seen Bah Humduck yet so I hope this version is good.
It depends if you like Bah Humduck or not. But, its defitinetly worth watching! Besides, its best to form your opinion, rather than agreeing the youtuber, and claim it as your own opinion.
@ yeah that’s why I hope to watch it this year.
I didn't know you were a fan of Looney Tunes.
Maybe Loonatics Unleashed would've been more sucsessful with their own christmas special? They fit each character into superhero archatypes easily! Especially egotistic buttmonkey daffy.
💜‼️
Is the next Disney villains retrospective is beauty and the beast since this is the perfect time to have Forte in this because there is a Christmas special of beauty and the beast called enchanted Christmas
It’s Darkwing Duck
I think even though Bugs Bunny is the mascot of Warner Bros., that Daffy Duck makes just as effective of a mascot for Looney Tunes as a franchise. It’s his more raw personality traits that distinguish it from other cartoon entities, especially Disney. Bah Humduck feels pretty meh to me though, taking too long to start and straining under the tonal balance.
Can you do the Jim Carey one
What’s next?
Yeah, after the end of theatrical run Looney Tunes were just blatantly... tired. Weird that WB didn't simply bring in new talent cuz Fritz and the rest have burnt out (Can anyone even count all the shorts they made over the decades?!). It wasn't until 90's when WB cartoons would once again have good quality humor.
When it comes to animation... 1st special is far more in line with theatrical shorts. They never prioritized fluidity (and polished look), that was more of a Disney thing.
Bring Disney Villains Retrospective: Gaston pls pls
You'll have to wait. He's doing Darkwing Duck villains next. Gaston should come afterwards in release order, unless there's another TV show or something.
@andywap3 Ok ok i will
You know that priscilla pig actually appeared with baby looney tunes And, the looney tunes show afterwards? You gonna need better fact checking bud.
You're thinking of Petunia Pig. Similar design, different character. Presumably in Bah Humduck she is Priscila's late mother.
Mate, if you’re gonna be snarky, get your own facts straight. And use proper grammar.
@@ColinLooksBack. Surprising that looneytunes show never made them related. They also could've some milage out tazmania family!
@@dannypalin9583. Constructive criticism fine, but this, just being mean! Especially none native english speakers.
