  • Red River Valley (1896)
"The Red River laden with red silt and flowing through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana into the Mississippi, is not where this song was born. Originally it seems to have been an old New York State song around the turn of the century called "In The Bright Mohawk Valley" (very close to the Red River). "Red River Valley" was an adaptation of this latter tune made over into a cowboy love song.
Over the years this typical cowboy song has moved slowly and steadily up the ladder of popularity as it was frequently performed by singing cowboys on and off radio and television. By mid-century "Red River Valley" had become well known from coast to coast. Two movies were named after this song, one in1936 starring Gene Autry, and the other in 1941 starring Roy Rogers. Numerous recordings have been made in various styles including a recent rock-'n'-roll version in 1959 which made quite a mark for itself {refers to the organ-led instrumental "Red River Rock" by Johnny And The Hurricanes, which reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100}.
"Red River Valley" has taken its place as a standard song in America's repertory of cowboy songs."
