First heard Johnny singing this on the 'Water is Wide' tape back in the late 90's.
Not been able to get it out my head since.

my dear, some of the ships did indeed land at Staten Island and then sailed onward to Ellis Island Immigration Station. Frank Mc Court writes about this in the sequel to his NY Times Best selling autobiography, Angela's Ashes which documents his childhood growing up in Limerick, in the Republic of Ireland. In the sequel, Tis he comes to America (NY) at 19 to begin a new life.

Ellis Island as a emigrant depot opened relatively late as far as the Irish diaspora was concerned. Most of the Irish emigrants who fled economic and political tyranny landed at Castle Garden which was located at the present day Battery, adjacent to South Ferry in Manhattan.

This is more poignant today with mass migration across so many border, where the migrants have troubles at home, but decide to bring them to their new country, state, city, whatever. They will never be free, and they go to change their new home into something that resembles their old. Wonderful song.

Nice song but from what this guy states at the beginning of the video, he is referring to Ellis Island, not Staten Island.

Immigrants landed at Ellis Island but he is singing as if Staten Island is where everyone was let off. Also, the Statue Of Liberty was not erected until 1886- and if he is singing of the Irish famine of the 1840's- he's off by forty years. He is also quoting "the poor and the huddled masses" which is a version of what is written on the statue. The lyrics suggest sailing up the Hudson River and leaving the Atlantic behind. Staten Island is not on the Hudson River but rather the Narrows. The guy is confused.
