And this week, we are breaking ground on one of the first things every homesteader should do - plant fruit trees! We are so excited to share the begging of our orchard with y'all and continue our cabin projects with bottling our home brew!

I bought my 7 acres about 30 years ago. If I had been smart I would have planted fruit trees and today they would be big. You guys are doing it right
Get Blueberry bushes and strawberries because they last forever. Also chives reproduce so highly that it's an off grid must.Any questions ask Catdaddy.
Fruit trees are probably the best investment for anyone getting started. Alongside potatoes and corn they generate the most *calories per acre.*
I have two mature (20+ years?) Asian Pear tress and two Comice Pear trees myself.
Just make sure you plant them where they'll get full sun and not compete for water with other trees and give them healthy amounts of (preferably) organic fertilizers (more as the tree gets bigger and starts fruiting). *Water in during dry periods...* Between rain and watering, 1-2 inches a week around the drip line is good. More when it's hotter.
Anything you plant will thrive with proper fertilization and irrigation. Your eyes and your hands will tell you when to do that. Just don't plant them and forget them & you'll have trees that are the envy of any orchard.
Totally agree with you guys. We Planted Fruit Trees first thing too.....although we are having moderate success with ours......it is still a smart thing to plant them first, then let them grow while you do EVERYTHING ELSE, LOL. Best wishes you two

I don't want to rain on your camp fire but the new leaves on your trees will make a tasty snack to the four legged neighbors. Deer ext. Some sort of deer repellant would be advisable. Ken

You may want to put some temporary fence to keep the deer off your new trees and vines.
I worked at a large nursery in the early eighties - planting thousands of bare root trees. If you ever want to have fun experimenting, try grafting other species of fruit trees onto some plumb root stock. Plumb trees have some of the hardiest root systems of all fruit trees. You can put several varieties on one root stock too!

Just make sure that when your peach tree begins to bare fruit that you don't let peaches lay on the ground. Get them up right away because dogs seem to love the pits and eating those can cause diabetes in dogs. Ask me how I know this. My poor baby is now diabetic and blind and I blame it all on me allowing peaches to lay on the ground for a few days before picking them up.
Paint the bottom 24" atleast with white paint to deter ants.
It's alittle late but if you fish, put the heads and guts in a bucket and use that "fish soup" to fertilize the bottom of the holes you plant trees(or pot) into. It's a natural nitrogen fixer. Natives used to plant corn in fish for the same reason
Fuji apples are THE BEST!!

if you get the pear tree to grow well with lots of fruit I'm come and setting my tent up I can eat pear all day love them

In 1987 in mic😢 we bought 25 acres tge first thing we did was plant apple and Peach trees, we already had blackberry and blueberries. We planted a huge garden. We canned everything, deer hunted for meat, raised meat chickens and layers. In 2011 heart surgery had me moving to Arizona. Now I'm 60 and miss everything I had in Michigan.
FYI, The sun moves from south to north in the spring, and North to South in the fall.
While fencing in 32 acres is probably way too expensive and time consuming I'd highly recommend fencing in the main area around your stuff to keep the 4 legged (and 2 legged) critters out. security should be a top priority on any property these days. love the channel and watching you guys build the place up :)
Muscatine make great jelly and the remaining hulls can be turned into great wine...its what we did with our huge Muscatine vineyard we would spread plastic on the ground under the vines that took ove a couple oaks and beat around with long cane poles...mom would cook the grapes down a bit...then mash them to release the juice. My grandfather took the remains and further cooked them before starting the wine process.
Jelly and wine are good marketable items

I assume you made sure your trees are self pollinating. 30 years ago we planted an apple tree which grew big and beautiful and the limbs make great smoke for fish or meat on the grill, but we have not had one editable apple. We had a few tiny ones but they never got big or ripe before falling off. At some point we learned that (at that time at least) many apple trees required two to pollinate. We never got a second tree as we didn't want to block sun from our garden. When it gets really hot in July and August, any week it does not rain, give the trees a half gallon or more of water. There are many creative ways on UA-cam to creatively slow water plants, gardens, or trees. Soakers hoses might work with above ground tanks. You should not have to water the second year, but not sure with the small root pods yours have.

Planting trees is great but they should be staked up so they will grow straight.
I don't know how many deer you have around you but you might want to put fencing around the tree's to keep the deer from killing them.

If you want a good apple, get you some Gala apple trees. It's a cross between Red Delicious and a Golden Delicious and one of the best flavored apples that I have tasted.
The bucket-o-fruit-trees was fun. Mango is a good choice. I might choose avocado as my workhorse fruit since I use it as spread, in guacamole, and tortilla soup. I hope all your plants do well. Looking forward to some crazy fruit beers. Who needs a brewhaus when you have a brewshed?
Back when I made beer, I was advised to buy glass bottles as ageing can continue fermentation just a bit and commercial beer bottle are/ were cheaper with some plastic in them and will blow during aging and I proved it by testing a few. Only two of 6 blew but that makes a mess and wastes good beer. Again, this was 30 years ago so Google could give you more up to date info.
Awesome advice to know I’m on the right track! Planted a peach tree, apple tree, blueberries, raspberries, blackberry bush, cherry tree, pecan tree and banana tree but I don’t know if the banana tree will survive out here in the winds. I want that mango tree though!

Great vid and channel! As a more experienced fruit grower you will need to spray your apples regularly for eatible fruit. If it's a.sweet cherry they are hard to get to produce due to the tons of bugs. I would recommend a hybrid plum like superior. They are hardier. European type pears are my best producers and are low.maintenance. I would recommend a small plum called nanking cherry. They are very hardy and reliable. Also make sure you focus on berries...every kind. They are reliable and fast to produce and are very hardy! Good luck!

in the low spots that puddle and pond put in rasberries and black berries. there like 7 bucks at wally world and LOVE pondy areas and will help with ponding and standing water. but be warned they will go crazy and grow fast

I think you will need 2 cherry trees to produce cherries.
Just a thought. Cass had mentioned that one day you all would get an auger to dig holes. I don't drill too many holes but whenever I do, I have a long stem auger that attaches to my battery drill and it makes for drilling holes so much easier, especially when you are a senior citizen. I just did a couple of peach trees a few weeks ago and like you mentioned they were just sticks with roots, but now are getting many leaves.
Might want consider Concord Grapes someplace too. They grow mad like and are pesticle resistant. Not a fan of concord wine but concord grape juice is nifty thrifty and easy peasy to make and just AWESOME fresh, carbonated or with some 60-80 proof "Hootenanny" in it. Just find a place in the woods, don't need be by the home base. Probably some already there someplace.
If you're planning any outdoor constructionalism (new term!) I don't know about In Tennessee but up here in New York there are abundances of Larch wood and can be had really cheapskill.
Like I buy what amounts to about eight face cords of slab for $75 + $30 delivery to our camp. Cant beat that. I use it for both campfires and constructionalism(s). Its both rot and presticle resistant. Our camp is in the Finger Lakes of Western NY Wine Country basically so rain well... It happens and many times its like OH MY GOSH rain, like this must be the place Noah made his practice run before the Great Flood. Built a wood shed out of larch, built a 20x10 thereabouts shed out of larch, built a fence out of larch last year I built a six person Tiki Bar out of planed larch and ground timbers. Fence, Shed and Wood Shed been up for a good eight+ years now and you'd never know it, zero rot, most still has the bark on it no less. Not allot of fun work with, have to use gloves due to splinters but the results and price and pretty amazing.
Treated ground timbers also are very good for construction and cheap. They are already made to lay on the ground, they look far more natural than processed construction woods and make for wonderful heavy projects. Lein-to's, studs etc and maintain better visual's as well as if you use stains. You can thin stains pretty drastic like and Ground Timbers just suck that stuff right in versus surface coverage only.

No you can't go back once fruit trees really root. But believe it or not if soil conditions are decent, good compost and aged poopster's are a good combination to spur growth. You have been saving you're poopsters right? LOL. They should be aged well too, not like you're age butt their age! LOL!
So what we did for some fruit tree's in suburbia and we're talking near Lake Ontario where soil quality rather sux because of the mega-ages of glacial creational (?) SAND, was lay down quite a bit of dirt... You seem to have plenty of that. Butt (yes again!) we'd a little dowser (dog) and my lady would take his ummm... Them things comin' out the shoot and let them sun dry, bag them, then crush them. Using a garden rake (the steel ones) lay it down, step on it making for little hole impressions and sprinkle the poomains about. First close to the whip(s) and then working farther outward over weeks, months about yard stick or two out from the "Whip" (Tree) in total. Ya' let the rain soak it down in, unless there is now, in which case water.
Now in doing that for example our Black Cherry Tree within 4 years was bearing fruit albeit not a ton but after 6-8 OH MY GOSH! Peach Tree about the same give or take few seasons. Fruit trees are water suckers BUT you dont want them overwatered, roots will rot. So consider that in coping with layout so excessive water gates away you also dont want them too close together for both water sake and that of pesticles or fungickles (LOL) so if one tree happens to get the clap they all dont.
Since you've so many fruits tree's you've poopsters to go around, chicken poopers tend be very good but hey, improvise!
So like after the first season of poop-i-ligation you'll like do less or perhaps none at all until midway or near end of second season... In others dont over-poop em' better to under-poop than over-poop. Keep measure of the growth as they begin to becomes tree's vs whips.
The trees also need to be caged and wrapped at the base
When did you do the intital fruit tree planting?
For future trees throw a cup of bonemeal/bloodmeal in the hole before planting.
