    Top band Magnum. Shame Tony can’t just thank and acknowledge the wonderful playing of past members and say he fell out with them. It’s a common thing for band leaders to trash the past to justify the present. Even if he really thinks that Rick is amazing and ‘better’ than Mark....no need to say that. Bob at least says the new boys bring freshness and energy without slagging the old gang off. Oh well. My favourite period of Magnum was with Richard Bailey on keys....brilliant.

      I agree. Tony obviously doesn't have a good word to say about Mark, whereas Mark has kept silent and not sunk to bad-mouthing his former colleagues. At least have the grace to be pleasant about former bandmates.

  • @CrappyScrap
    @CrappyScrap 6 років тому +7

    While Clarkin's comment was unfortunate, we don't know what caused the fallout between the former bandmates. While who's the superior keyboard player is a question one should steer clear of, there's no denying that Rick is brilliant (his influence on Magnum's new sound on LotRtE proves that). Clarkin should not have made this comment, but I'd be cautious in portraying Mark as a perfect victim (he left the band in the middle of a tour and has claimed in interviews that he was unfairly treated by Clarkin back in the 80's). Let's just enjoy the music and refrain from picking sides, we don't know the whole story and probably never will. And to all the people who wrote that Clarkin should retire; the last album achieved the highest chart since Goodnight L.A., and each new album scores higher than the previous one. I bet the next one will break the Top 10 mark, and I can't wait!

    • @nobbie3757
      @nobbie3757 6 років тому +11

      Sure, we don't know what happened behind the scenes and we will probably never know the whole story - but when a musician feels forced to leave during a tour there's doubtless a more than valid reason behind such a difficult decision. But what we know for sure is that one side has maintained a dignified silence since the split whereas the other side seemingly deems it necessary to drop low level remarks at every possible opportunity. And these unnecessary and offensive comments are what people are reacting on. Nobody is turning anyone into a victim - what's a perfect victim anyways and do you have any proof for what you yourselves claim to know? Music does matter as long as everyone involved is displaying some decency and integrity but vanishes into oblivion once the main actors are forgetting their manners. And the one week the latest album charted is probably only due to the admittedly clever marketing coup of including Tobi Sammet on the album. Musically Magnum had reached their peak with Shadow Garden. Including some pseudo Purple keyboards, endless horrible Yeah Yeah passages and lots of offensive lyrics does for sure not improve the quality of the latest output and does not exactly kindle interest in any eventual ones still to come.

      They should keep rocking without offending other people. Then they would most probably receive less negative comments. If they conduct such disrespectful interviews like this one they do deserve each and every negative comment. In fact they have provoked them.

    Magnum has ceased to be Magnum with Mark Stanway leaving. It really is a pity they did not show him more respect. With Bob's voice diminishing and the typical Magnum keyboard sounds absent I can't wait for Mark's new band Kingdom Of Madness with its superior Crème de la Crème lineup to revive the old, always neglected, classics and to let them shine in new never known splendour with passion and brilliance.

    • @golgatanian
      @golgatanian 5 років тому +4

      Complete nonsense. Are you mark Stanway´s nephew or..?! :-D The CORE and HEART of Magnum is and always has been Tony and Bob. Mark is fine and all that, but replaceable. And even though Bob´s voice is no longer at the top of the game it still carries the spirit and the warmth..the soul!

    • @nobbie3757
      @nobbie3757 5 років тому +12

      Not related I am afraid. But if Tony and Bob are the heart of Magnum then Magnum currently suffers some severe heart condition if not a heart attack. Arrogance and callousness have rarely been seen so repulsive. Warmth and soul seemingly have gone down the drain. Not surprising Mark saw himself forced to call it a day. The latest outputs have clearly proven how essential Mark used to be for Magnum. They are completely missing Mark’s brilliant bombastic keyboard sounds only to have them replaced with some nice but unsubstantial lift music piano trying but failing to sound like Purple and which tends to get drowned out by the far too prominent guitar sound anyway. Magnum is currently burying Melodic Rock but Kingdom Of Madness keeps it alive.

    • @golgatanian
      @golgatanian 5 років тому +1

      @@nobbie3757 Well, all kinds of art and creative output has its origin in the vast ocean of human emotions and arrogance, anger, disappointment etc are ALSO among those..it´s not only love and pink little ponies. The most beautiful art comes from the darkest corners of the human soul and mind. If I were Tony I too would have been a little provoked by Mark simply because he goes a bit overboard with certain things..
      When that is said - from the clips I have heard of "Kingdom of Madness" it´s a bit disappointing. And the setlist?!?! WTF? If they want to dig deep into the goldmine of Magnum-songs, why is the setlist then so uninspired? I would have loved to hear some awesome cover-tunes from them..but it´s really not that interesting (in my humble opinion)

    • @nobbie3757
      @nobbie3757 5 років тому +11

      @@golgatanian Haven’t heard any provoking statements from Mark’s side. Something that for sure cannot be said about Bob and Tony. Or at least about Tony cause Bob doesn’t really display any opinion of his own but simply shadows Tony. I very much like the Kingdom Of Madness setlist, though I agree there’s one or two songs I would maybe have exchanged with others. But the KOM versions are brilliant and have - coming back to your original comment - so much more heart and soul in their very own interpretation than the pimped up ever repetitive stuff that current Magnum does deliver. And KOM style songs are as far from cover tunes as you could ever imagine. I'd also assume that they will for sure have many variations in their set list in the years to come.

    Why don't we let Mr Clarkin contradict his statement himself? Taken from Mr. Clarkin's very own words on the Another Chapter Another Verse documentary 2005: "WHEN MARK CAME INTO THE BAND IT STARTED TO FEEL MORE LIKE A REAL BAND. IT FELT LIKE THE BAND WAS ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING PRETTY GOOD BACK THEN. WE SORT OF WE ACTUALLY STARTED TO SELL RECORDS". So seemingly Mark was a superior enough musician to boost Mr. Clarkin's record sales all these years. What a shabby way to repay that favour only a couple of years later. Seems Mr. Clarkin is forgetting his manners. No surprise that so many of the decent fans have lost all respect for the band.

    ive been into magnum since the days of chase the dragon. i loved their music, tonys song writing was brilliant, bobs vocals superb and the flourish of mark stanways keyboards added the flare and signature sound. however, for me the integrity, and attitude of a band is very important to me. the music pails into insignificance when i believe that there are under handed goings on within a band. when songs become personal and vindictive and band members take pleasure in having a swipe at former band members. all the good work magnum have done in the past is now history for me. i honestly cant listen to a band that has values that this band does. yes they have some brilliant material, but none of it will ever be played by me again. all i can think of is the injustice in this situation. not the quality of the music. and in all honesty the quality has been very inconsistent over the last few albums. the other thing that annoys me about magnum and its fans is peddling out the same old stuff on stage for bob to croak his way through it. you try telling a die hard magnum fan that bobs voice went five or more years ago and they set the wolves on you. yet magnum continue to line their pockets with sub standard stage shows because blinkered fans still buy the tickets. in finishing, i cannot believe a man of tony clarkins obvious intelligence can stoop to a child like behaviour he displays in this interview and the lyrics he wrote in one of his recent songs. pity because the album is good. but i cant listen any longer. thats me done

      Well said, though I would disagree on the quality of the latest album. Not only because of the crappy lyrics, to bitch on a former band member is an absolute no-go, but also because of the missing musical quality. Magnum have reached their post reunion peak with EFTSG, both SBDL and LOTRTE are sub-standard in comparison with their former albums.
