because the Laiv is $2700, and the Denafrips Pontus is about $1k less, it would be a more fair comparison if the $550 denafrips Iris is added to the pontus via I2S for a comparison….this combo is what i have and would like to hear the comparison outcome.
Boy you hit the nail on head on the Laiv dac. I heard the Laiv Harmony and it sounds is very similar to the Holo May spring 3. It's just as rich in tonal balance, with a bit more micro detail retrieval. Additionally, your advice on considering synergy within the system is critical to our purchasing decision on any one component. Love the spur of the moment blog. Thanks Jay.
I own the Harmony LAIV DAC and it is amazing in every way possibly. That includes transparency, sound stage, and size. I heard the Terminator Plus in my system and I like the LAIV better. It has a much fuller sound. The fact that they can accomplish this in a down scaled enclosure should be a credit to them. To use size and weight to determine how a DAC or any electronic equipment should sound is shocking. The size and weight of wax in our ears is a more logical reason for the sound quality we hear than the size and weight of electronic equipment.
So basically just as I’ve said. “Warmer” than Denafrips. I’m glad you like it more 👍 You have to put things into context. I am not suggesting size and weight is a determining factor in sound quality. However what matters in a dac (PSU, output stage, dac implementation) makes it highly unlikely that a compact unit will outperform a full sized dac with a separate psu underneath it. Your preference is a different matter and like I said, the rest of the system and synergy matters more. For example; the pre-amp or streamer you used may have been just a better match to your LAIV Dac and not the terminator.
@@Jayiyagi As always, thank you for the video. I understand your point on hardware but using that logic - a Mola Mola Tambaqui could also never compete with the large DACs you mention like a Terminator+ since it is half the size and doesn't have a separate (dual?) PSU underneath it? If your subjective listening puts the Laiv in the same category as a Pontus then that is of course 100% fine. I think you did a hell of a job! I've owned a LAiV Harmony DAC for about 3 weeks now. It was a bridge to chipset (sound) of Marantz CD and Aurender AK 4490. I consider it an upgrade to those but more importantly, a conservative monetary bridge to much higher level DACS (as you've mentioned). I (sort of) like/love listening to music, mostly classical and jazz and I seek good balance of presentation but all the while, I know that it (the seeking/searching) is an artifact; a device that approaches the playing of live music. That said, it's such a slippery slope. I give all of you youtube channel presenters (Steve G, Steve H, John D, ) a lot of credit in your own personal search and that you have endeavored to share it with us. Thank you. Excellent preview of the LAiV Harmony DAC and its place in the landscape. I have had this DAC for several weeks now. Your estimate of warmth being between the Holo Audio and Denafrips house sound makes sense to me, and that was the sound I was looking for. I feed it I2S from a Singxer SU-6 into a passive attenuator, then into an Orchard Audio DMC Ultra 2.0. I know that you have left your "Studio Monitor" days behind, but I am using a pair of Amphion Two18, which I love. I made a conscious decision to get color from the source, rather than a preamp or amp (or speakers for that matter). The Amphions are not a warm sounding speaker, but the Harmony gives me that delightful taste of sweetness that I normally associate with Single Ended Triode amps (Decware), but just a taste, and for me, just enough. One of the things I love about the Harmony DAC is that you can change the sound profile by your choices. I find that in my setup, I prefer the I2S for source, but I clock it locally in the Harmony, not using the I2S clocking from the Singxer SU-6. (NOS mode is my favorite) This may have to do with cable choice (Audioquest Carbon HDMI). I was not going to spend over $1,000 for the top of the line cables that the Golden Ear crowd love so much. Probably my favorite thing is that, because I use my PC for everything, the Harmony is not overly analytical for UA-cam, Netflix, etc. However, when I use HQPlayer software to upsample music files, the Harmony performs at another level!!! For the first time I can now see myself accumulating a library of music files just for listening. My other DACs have all been Studio style, and "Mastering Grade" DACs (depending on which marketing department positions the products). For myself, with my minimalist, hyper clarity style listening chain, the LAiV Harmony hits my sweet spot in the Resolution/Tonality/Price matrix. :)

I tried the Laiv as well, but I didn't think the technicalities were particularly good. Agree on Spring 3 comparison, but I think you get more with Spring 3.
A question a few days after seeing this video. I have the RME ADI-2 PRO FS R BE and use as a dac, would the LAiV Harmony be a sideways move or an upgrade? I my RME feeding my SPL Elector preamplifier, SPL Crossover then to my SPL Performer m1000 monoblocks into my Zu Omen Def or my Zu Druids. I do run dual subwoofers and have them so the sound all seems to come out of my speakers.
This loft style video is exactly what I was trying to get Sean to do. He says he keeps writing a script for his reviews and then scraps it because he doesn’t like the final product. This style of grip it and rip it is enjoyable.
Right there with you….. Roon Server(LPS)>Volumio Rivo(LPS)>Iris>I²S >Pontus II (original firmware)>Schiit Freya + (NOS Tubes + Audiophile Capacitors + Resistors)>McIntosh MC152 SS Power Amp>DynAudio Contour 20s & Two REL T/5x Subs. The system sounds warm and detailed. I just love the synergy. Great time to be an audiophile….SO MANY choices.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. About the May vs Terminator + comparison, it’s worth adding that right know there is a huge price disparity between those two DACs -Denafrips have been increasing their prices lately. The T+ is US$7,600, while the May KTE is $5,600 and the Level 2 is $4,800. Jay, I know you did your videos on those DACs some years ago, but given the current price difference, do you think the sonic difference between them is reflected in their respective prices? Appreciate your opinion.
Yes and no. I do not appreciate the price increase on Denafrips. Especially now that they have cut out the middle man (vinshine audio), I don't understand why there is a price increase, if anything I was expecting a price decrease. I plan to ask them directly but the Denafrips rep I am dealing with seem to have a pretty heavy language barrier... However, to answer your question; unfortunately, like I said these two DACs are pretty different in its sound signature and so depending on application and the system choice... it might be the only viable option as the May Dac is not really a replacement but a competition at flagship prices with a different sound signature
@@Jayiyagi thanks for your reply. The Denafrips representative, Mike Li, has not been forthcoming in several Facebook posts where questions have been asked. He just replies in very generic terms. I hope you have better luck getting info that you can share with us.
I won't be buying denafrips until the dust settles and they prove they can handle distribution and support.. if I'm contemplating $7k purchases I'm not ok with language barriers and I'm too old to learn Mandarin. It would be awesome if I could speak it though right?
At the CanJam 2024 London there were 3 systems that were next level awesome, one was the Warwick Acoustic booth, another used the Modhouse Tungsten and Harmony Laiv and giant tube amp and the last I can't remember there was so much gear..!! 😅
There seems to be some confusion about i2s (in some comments). I2s IS used internally within CD players, etc., but what separates i2s as a communications protocol BETWEEN COMPONENTS is when i2s is used internally, the pathways are short, so can usually be direct. The electrical distance when used between separate components is too far, but that's when an LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signal) transmitter and receiver is used. The chips were traditionally used for video purposes, but PS Audio developed the method of using LVDS transmitters/receivers to use between their Perfectwave Transport and DAC many years ago, and made the tech behind it "open source" rather than putting a patent on it - and the rest is history. So when people complain about i2s only capable of short distance communication, that is sort of true, but the reality is that it is a PROTOCOL (not method), and the use of LVDS transmitters/receivers is what gives the ability to use the PROTOCOL over greater distances.
Hi Jay, very good conclusion and agree!! People tend to chase around YT-reviewers and just make their opinion based on their findigs! I'm someone a bit crazy around DAC/Streamers, also in higher price ranges and as you refer to Denafrips and Holo, DAC's in the $3 - $8k range are extremely competetive and matter of persoanal flavor. Where in my opinion price vs technology innovations ends and we are just talking about battle of *brands*, its around $15-25k. Yes, as somone owend several DACs in this range (MSB, dCS, Aries Cerat and having a *revealing* hifi chain) I honestly must say: makes sounxwise no sense anymore, just matter of owning it 😉 what I'd be also interested if you have started into looking into legacy, higher end music Server (not talking about Taiko or something like that).as a crazy digital hifi Person, have started with an Le Reunion brand music Server and diretta protocol with an SPEC USB bridge and quiet impressed. Really good DAC Designs with serious analogue output stage make for me a difference, but also my experience feeding DACs with different streaming sources can be quiet surprising. Also comparing USB/i2s vs SPDIF/AES-EBU is important to test for each brand, a lot of surprising effects!
I had the Pontus and now the Laiv, the Laiv is certainly better in term of the overall sound signature in my system (my system is really neutral). seem a much larger soundstage and vocal is really on point. However, the Laiv is more in the Venus price point so it would be interesting to see you compare the Laiv and the Venus.
@@nwestmoreland1 I went from a Pontus II to the Laiv, and in my system it is much better, larger sound stage, better microdetails and timbre. It maybe that the Pontus II 15 is a huge improvement over the original Pontus II but I have not heard that. In terms of fairness of the comparision I used the samd USB cable straight from a MAC Studio into both DAC's. Mac was running ROON (and I tried with and without HqPlayer 5 engaged)
I can’t wait for the comparaison between the Liav and the Pontus, Venus.. I like listening to Hifi and avoid all the hype! It’s possible to have a gear contract review and place the gear in is reel price bracket not in the giant killer category 😂 I like your new review presentation though.
because the Laiv is $2700, and the Denafrips Pontus is about $1k less, it would be a more fair comparison if the $550 denafrips Iris is added to the pontus via I2S for a comparison….this combo is what i have and would like to hear the comparison outcome.
I was wondering if you could also get a Rockna Wavelight in for review. Would be interesting to know how it compares to the offerings from Holo,Denafrips etc. 👍

I kinda like this format a bit more. I've noticed that other audio reviewers doing similar things. Sometimes being less polished and raw makes it more 'real' and honest.
I’m playing with the harmony dac for a week now, it’s important to know that it’s gotten better and better by the hours of use playing. 80ish hours now and the sound stage got much bigger and the base is much firmer with control and authority than it’s first shown … If it will keep improving in the wright direction it will be much better dac that alot reviewers thinks! All said above related to the i2s connection!!! On usb it’s slightly downgrade compered to i2s.. and on coax/opt it’s just ok for its price
Im curious what you think of cd players? Can they keep up? The Rega Saturn mk3 for example is more like a dac with a cd. Are products like this only expensive?
Does the Laiv Harmony produce quick, punchy bass? I hope my question is relevant, because for example Denafrips Ares didn't have a quick bass as I remember.
.In my 2 cents a preamp mostly affect the bass slam. Have you tried topping pre90? When you have a chance its eye opener for me what a reasonable price pre amp can do compare to expensive ones
Which DAC is your raference high-end DAC ? Why? This would be a very interesting video. This is not meant as buying advice, ot judging you, but as a means to understand you better as a reviewer. I am a fan.
Finally! There’s just too much LAIV hype from other reviewers. Every new DAC is supposedly night and day over the previous. Its an R2R DAC. It will top out at some point and any improvements will be marginal. Its up to the user if they want it for their system.
You have to put things into context. I am not suggesting size and weight is a determining factor in sound quality. However what matters in a dac (PSU, output stage, dac implementation) makes it highly unlikely that a compact unit will outperform a full sized dac with a separate psu underneath it.
Finally! The LAIV hype is just too much from other reviewers. Every new DAC is supposedly night and day over the previous. Its a gawd dang R2R DAC. It will top out at some point and any improvements will be marginal. Cant be night and day.
I thought Hans’ review of the LAiV Harmony DAC made a lot of sense. This review makes sense. Denafrips did Alvin dirty in my opinion, and are not distributor products but did they lower their prices . No, so I would never own anything from Denafrips.
I2S is defined a long time ago. What seems to be the problem? In the audio industry, it is used for something it is not intended for. It is a protocol developed for internal use inside devices. It is not supposed to connect different devices as the protocol itself does not define any physical interface (as it is created for a different purpose).
LOL. Jay is not a good reviewer in my opinion. A lot of these audio companies even advertise the weight in the “Features” section of their product page. It truly baffles me.
@@skzeeman007 Your opinion of me as a reviewer is your own but let me clarify that the "context" of me talking about the weight is related to a full sized DAC with a dedicated PSU underneath it vs a more compact DAC. I've mentioned in many of my videos how SIZE or WEIGHT does not define audio quality. However, in this case where it is so evident that the cost to build the DAC and what is important in a DAC (PSU, output stage, dac architecture) is visibly different, one must wonder... outside of the "hype" for a new product, how would a new company like LAIV suddenly be able to make something in a compact size that competes with full sized unit?
Great format, very informative vid, thank you!👍 Jay, you've been teasing us for months with this awesome Allnic phonostage sitting on your rack, when the review?😁 Greatings from the Alps!!
Nope I did not say anything based on chassis size and weight but whats inside and what makes out the weight. You have to put things into context. I am not suggesting size and weight is a determining factor in sound quality. However what matters in a dac (PSU, output stage, dac implementation) makes it highly unlikely that a compact unit will outperform a full sized dac with a separate psu underneath it.
Jay why did you censor my comment? I made a polite technical viewpoint about a weight and complexity of audio component regarding to its sound quality. Are you really a person that deletes viewpoints that diagree from your own?
Hi. I do not know what comment you made. I did not delete it, I welcome different view points Please make sure your comment does not contain links or language that may be auto filtered by youtube. Thanks!
Hans Beekhuizen kind of trashed the Laiv.... He said it could compete with the Holo Audio Cyan 2 only if you pair it with a very good streamer over i2s. The holi audio is less than half the price.
Is Hans allowed to keep the equipment he reviews? Most reviewers get to keep the equipment they review and that creates a conflict of interest. Therefore, it opens up the possibility that a product is praised or trashed based on money. Higher priced equipment manufacturers have an interest in lower priced competitor items to be trashed. There must be a disclaimer with every review stating whether a reviewer is paid by being allowed to keep the equipment they write about.
Audionte r2r, or Bricasti M1 or M3.. find them used.... LTA aero might be a good contender.. though it only has SPDIF..chifi will offer slut of the month every year. if not more....you will be lucky if you have customer support in 5 years...Dac technology has not changed,,, especially R2R... FGPA.. yes.. though that is usually a software update..
Both not interesting as well as the Ares. Better look at the Cyan 2 or otherwise NewOntech, Ferrum Wandla, Newest Lampizator Amber, AA dac, TA dac 200 and the Sugden dac 🤔
Seems no one other than the Darko video pointed out that the electronics in the LAiV Harmony are mounted differently as to take up less space in the chassis. Instead of laying flat they are upright. I do not own the Harmony. I am seriously considering it though. I have the RME ADI-2 PRO FS R BE and use it as a dac since the linestage is all done in the digital domain and to me took away from the dac's ability. I want to buy a dac that is an upgrade not a sideways move. Hard to figure out unless I spend 10k or more.

I won't be getting rid of my May KTE DAC anytime soon but feel free to buy your LAIV DAC!
@@giovannitirado6229 Is the T+A a R2R?
I won't be buying denafrips until the dust settles and they prove they can handle distribution and support.. if I'm contemplating $7k purchases I'm not ok with language barriers and I'm too old to learn Mandarin. It would be awesome if I could speak it though right?
At the CanJam 2024 London there were 3 systems that were next level awesome, one was the Warwick Acoustic booth, another used the Modhouse Tungsten and Harmony Laiv and giant tube amp and the last I can't remember there was so much gear..!! 😅
Thanks for sharing.
I have a Pontus II and wanted to know if you also fel the Laiv is warmer/fuller sounding than the Pontus?
Man, I was really interested in that Laiv Harmony DAC but I told myself if I hear that size matters one more time 😅
Underrated comment.

Hi Jay. Have you reviwed or heard the Weiss DAC204? Joel
80ish hours now and the sound stage got much bigger and the base is much firmer with control and authority than it’s first shown …
If it will keep improving in the wright direction it will be much better dac that alot reviewers thinks!
All said above related to the i2s connection!!!
On usb it’s slightly downgrade compered to i2s.. and on coax/opt it’s just ok for its price
Will update only if it becomes terminator+ eating monster 😉
Im curious what you think of cd players? Can they keep up? The Rega Saturn mk3 for example is more like a dac with a cd. Are products like this only expensive?
Hype 🚂🚂🚂 rolling thru.
how is this compare to elac ddp-2 that you review many years ago? how is this to benchmark dac 2?
Does the Laiv Harmony produce quick, punchy bass? I hope my question is relevant, because for example Denafrips Ares didn't have a quick bass as I remember.
.In my 2 cents a preamp mostly affect the bass slam. Have you tried topping pre90? When you have a chance its eye opener for me what a reasonable price pre amp can do compare to expensive ones
Yes - paired with my Michi P5/S5.
The weight of gear shouldn't bias you, it's about the engineering.
Just curious why you choose to compare the LAIV to the Pontus vs the Venus?
I've never heard the LAIV Harmony DAC, but looking under the hood it appears it could benefit from an upgraded clock.
1:40 I have a question for you. What is the fastest animal on the planet?
The first reviewer ever to decide a dac os worthy by its weight
You have to put things into context. I am not suggesting size and weight is a determining factor in sound quality. However what matters in a dac (PSU, output stage, dac implementation) makes it highly unlikely that a compact unit will outperform a full sized dac with a separate psu underneath it.
I wish you get back to hold equipment for comparison, .... something like the RME ADI-2 DAC FS t see if the actual Dacs have really improved

Danny @ GR Research has 2 New Big Box Speakers 🔊 could you review 😎
I thought Hans’ review of the LAiV Harmony DAC made a lot of sense.
This review makes sense.
Denafrips did Alvin dirty in my opinion, and are not distributor products but did they lower their prices .
No, so I would never own anything from Denafrips.
I2S is defined a long time ago. What seems to be the problem? In the audio industry, it is used for something it is not intended for. It is a protocol developed for internal use inside devices. It is not supposed to connect different devices as the protocol itself does not define any physical interface (as it is created for a different purpose).
Out of all my connections, I2S sounds the best by a noticeable margin.
Yes, always measure audio in weight.
power supply is hugely important and more power supply=more weight

I wonder how would you judge them without seeing size and weight, just based on sound only :)
You lost me when you said it wasnt possible for the Laiv to sound as good as the Holo or Denafr based on its chassis size and weight ... seriously?
Nope I did not say anything based on chassis size and weight but whats inside and what makes out the weight.
You have to put things into context. I am not suggesting size and weight is a determining factor in sound quality. However what matters in a dac (PSU, output stage, dac implementation) makes it highly unlikely that a compact unit will outperform a full sized dac with a separate psu underneath it.
Are you not missing the Rockna and a Denafrips here?..
Jay why did you censor my comment? I made a polite technical viewpoint about a weight and complexity of audio component regarding to its sound quality. Are you really a person that deletes viewpoints that diagree from your own?
Hi. I do not know what comment you made. I did not delete it, I welcome different view points
Please make sure your comment does not contain links or language that may be auto filtered by youtube.
Thanks!
Are we not mentioning TRUE flagship MSB and Rockna???
Briscasti is god, local here in the northeast. Bryston BDA-3 is also very underrated, and has Bryston reliability and support.
Both not interesting as well as the Ares. Better look at the Cyan 2 or otherwise NewOntech, Ferrum Wandla, Newest Lampizator Amber, AA dac, TA dac 200 and the Sugden dac 🤔
the TA is a nightmare..
@@auggysimcity why? Plan to buy 1 🥹
Alvine left Denafrips..... good luck with repairs.....
