I've actually found good reason for this motherboard and I'm glad I found this video because I've been looking for a small motherboard that could fit in my play station for PC case mod. The only other small motherboards were the smallest of mini itx motherboards that used a laptop charger as a power supply and even those small ones would be borderline fit like a glove type situation that would obviously have Heat issues. So with this NUC motherboard I might even be able to do my little project with the "PlayStation One" Instead of the larger "Play Station".
I listened to Gordon the podcast for years and years (7 or 8...), never knew what he looked like. Finally got a face to the voice. Still miss his rants. Also, good video.
I picked up a celron nuc for about $140. I had ram and a 2.5 inch drive lying around so it was a good deal. Installing windows 10 on it. I've noticed there is an enourmous premium on power in these little boxes. The lowest end ones are the only ones that are reasonably priced.
I'd be for building your own NUC if you had many configuration options, but I don't see a big advantage over a standard Intel NUC, which lets you choose your own memory and hard drive.
I won a NUC at an event and looking what to do with the NVMe card that came with the kit? Also do I need extra SATA cable for the Samsung EVO 850 SSD drive or does it just plug into the drive bay in the NUC?
1: Not custom. Motherboard is supplies by intel to different vendors. 2: You need to get a very high end motherboard to get Thunderbolt 3. As far as i know, this is one of the only ones. Only a single PCIE 3.0 slot, but it fits everything else you need. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813132638
about the price of building your own NUC, the cost of motherboard is higher than what you would think, simply because there are not big market for buyers who want to purchase the raw motherboard and DIY their own NUC. It costs less for Intel to manufacture the NUC and sell it on the proper market. To me, the Intel NUC box has given a very good deal in terms of the performance and price. I wanted to buy a smaller components to build my own mini pc - that was my original plan before I got the NUC PC. But there was no easy market for me to get what I want for building a mini pc close to NUC. Without demand, I don't see any reason why Intel wants to release the market for NUC motherboard. There are not many buyers in this market. Regular users will prefer to purchase the pre-built mini pc which is exactly what NUC is targeting on.
Considering the cost of laptops all these mini PC s should be a lot cheaper. The heatsink casing went on all too easily. How do you know it's even making good contact with the chips to cool them?
Jesse Deptula I can't stress this point enough. It's difficult to explain to other people when their like "well, I just bought it." Err, yeah.. but no.. It doesn't work like that.
pro tip: if you have a spare old ass laptop with wifi, you can take the wires, connectors, and leads out of it. of course it requires taking just about the whole laptop apart.
you could buy a basic tablet, hook it up to a Decent 300$ projector. and watch videos at 1080P at 60 - 180 Inches. and it'd still cost less than 600$ lol
I was hoping you could save some $ by building your own but this video shows you can't. By the way, the audio echo in this video was quite distracting.
so... you prefer a bare motherboard, and remove the fan and heatsink, to then put it into a case that acts as a heatsink but still uses a fan *smh* i can understand going for the completely fanless custom cases, but opting for alternative cases that have no added value and actually fewer features just so you can say you built your own is just pointless.
agreed, you're already adding ram, storage & wifi in boxed nucs, and I have yet to see the boards by themselves at a price more than a few dollars cheaper than you an find the boxed versions if you do minimal searching.
190 dollars seriously. i do want to build it but all i see is just you add the motherboard in. so i don't think it matters than. the intel nuc is 200. the case is 40 abed the motherboard is a whooping 130 bucks. thats the base with an atom. so it is not exactly supposed to be that intel nuc with an i3. an i3 is 280. conclusion. 320 BUCKS. SERIOUSLY. AN i3 is LIKE 200
+Schoko Öz Yeah, like two Mini ITX boards with Athlon X4 cores and 750 Ti low profile cards, even screens for the price. Then you have two fragboxes that are great for LAN parties.
Yeah....... This guy really sucks at making videos.... Intel really needs to get their shit together with these. They are such a great concept, but with all of the money you have to dump into the damn thing, they should be at least a little bit cheaper. I'd much rather use older parts that I have lying around to make an HTPC. In terms of using as a Steambox, I'd just save the money and get a Steam Link for $50, and host from your gaming rig, over your home network.
It would be useful if you had listed everything in the description

i saw a static discharge when you put the wifi card in, good thing it didnt break anything lol
nice show and tell, good clear voice, it is like were doing this together, enjoyed very much, thanks.
Cool t-shirt Gordon.
How can I get different type of motherboard this size?
I'd be for building your own NUC if you had many configuration options, but I don't see a big advantage over a standard Intel NUC, which lets you choose your own memory and hard drive.
amazing video, thanks but,can you leave the links to each product?
Why the fuck wouldn't he leave links and/or the name of the products in the description?
I just happened across this video. As a old school mpc fan and sub, sup gordo!!
They're making quantum computers.
I won a NUC at an event and looking what to do with the NVMe card that came with the kit? Also do I need extra SATA cable for the Samsung EVO 850 SSD drive or does it just plug into the drive bay in the NUC?
Great video...
Its good to have them in fanless case.
+Zatoichiable I'm guessing you failed to spot the rather average sized PC case fan in the bottom of the case then :P
Reinventou a roda????? Pegou um equipamento projetado, que funciona muito bem, e mudou o gabinete. Pra que?????
Excellent custom Mini PC.
Where find Mini-ITX w/ MXM slot and DP and Thunderbold 3 conections?
1: Not custom. Motherboard is supplies by intel to different vendors.

You can build your own Mini-PC with the Mini-STX motherboard form factor.
why you did not use wistrap for Electro Static Discharge the motherboard near to be damages the component...?
Thanks
Live/work in Oakland. I want that shirt! where did you get it?

can this nucs get powered by batteries?
Isn't this just mini-ITX? I thought a ton of companies made boards on that form factor....If it's not, what's the advantage to this, if any?
why is it that whenever I hear NUC, I always get reminded of that e-reader.....
How to make own Power box pc or Android box from broken tablet??
You seem very familiar. Are you on Jays2cents talk show? Or some other one. I am not sure. I watch a lot of tech channels
Hopefully the price will come down very soon.
You don't use an anti-static mat and earth strap?
i'll be waiting for the AMD version with a gpu which can play decent games and HBM RAM.
Considering the cost of laptops all these mini PC s should be a lot cheaper.
The heatsink casing went on all too easily. How do you know it's even making good contact with the chips to cool them?
thank you...
Links please. we need links :D
LOL, the guy in the video looks like Rex Lee. :)
aren't you meant to pull off the thermal pad off the chip and clean the cpu paste off the cpu?
The case already has two thermal pads
i bought a 21.5 inch lcd. it only has vga and nuc doesen`t have vga port.... :(
You can buy HDMI to VGA adapters for like $6 on eBay.
Why the heck did you buy a monitor with only VGA? That's crazy outdated even if it is LCD.
its brand new actually
n33dw33d3333 You can buy outdated things brandnew and if it's only input is VGA it's outdated.
Jesse Deptula I can't stress this point enough. It's difficult to explain to other people when their like "well, I just bought it." Err, yeah.. but no.. It doesn't work like that.
I don't see the advantage of building your own. I could build a media pc with that price.
***** people don't build a car to pay a whole bunch for a a tiny engine and itty bitty tires (don't know a lot about cars)
Dalton McCabe Many people used to install those in cars.
*****
Friend of my used to build one but on RPi. For Navigation, music controls and some other tasks. Setup looks like one in Tesla X.
pro tip: if you have a spare old ass laptop with wifi, you can take the wires, connectors, and leads out of it. of course it requires taking just about the whole laptop apart.
I thought he will be using the raspberry pi.. haha
But, nevermind..
I havr a good mobo that is like 6-10cm width and length
I hope this will be cheaper
8:28 nope Intel does know what to do with this, milk as much money as they can from you
is this cheaper
No
Just .Gaming yeah found out because the motherboard costs a lot
*****
there is no point :/
i will down vote if you install windows 10 on it
thanks please make a list of parts I need
really? 600$ for something that will struggle playing 1080p videos? Smart.
you could buy a basic tablet, hook it up to a Decent 300$ projector. and watch videos at 1080P at 60 - 180 Inches. and it'd still cost less than 600$ lol
i pay 250 dollars for the celeron model + 120gb ssd + 4gb ddr memory module
where
is thi project using intel nuc kits? www.kickstarter.com/projects/atomcomputer/neutron-a-full-blown-windows-pc-in-the-palm-of-you
I'm really late to say this but it looks like it
Such a scam..... XD.... They were reselling NUCs.....
what will be happen if you custom changes chassis and remove the original heat sink and fan? chines find a new way to make a new business?
Walmart has them for $145 now.
If you spent $700 then you are getting a horrible deal. You could get that for half the price.
I can buy a 125cc bike for 600$
Yes

+Schoko Öz

No anti-static wrist-band...and I'm pretty sure he's going to have tons of excuses like anyone else....sigh
i don't use, be cause as most computer companies will tell you that you really don't need one for modern computers.
Yeah....... This guy really sucks at making videos....

Made in China
that's mean!...... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA.... YEAH! I'M STILL LMBOO.......
bare greasy fingers damage circuit boards.
fuck that i can build a cheaper gaming pc
You're missing the point.
its like buy a stupid small desktop that cant do shit all and costs way more than it should might as well buy a laptop
dj red hare aus again, you are missing the point
its just silly and i dont like if you want it to be portable you have to bring a keyboard and mouse and a projector or monitor with you to use it
dj red hare aus Sir, the point, you've missed it again.
