I'm so glad he included the "I'm funnier than you are" (Groucho) and "Why don't I just entertain you" (Jolson) stories. Note, incidentally, the absolute reverence with which Carson (a mere three years away from his own retirement) treats this Showbiz Eminence, who was making films with Gracie Allen when Carson was but a boy.

Back in those days you could just sit back and smoke a cigar on set and relax like you would at home! World population was rising fast, but it was still in check. People knew their place, there were classic careers like shoemaker, carpenters, etc... people aspired to do the jobs their parents did, and your children would also inherit those careers. Later everyone wanted to be a big shot lawyer, doctor, or run for office, creating chaos in the job market. Forward to today, and population is rising uncontrollably, machines can do virtually any job, and governments are stomping on your rights. Soon we will have no freedoms left... George Burns (a Scottish name, though he was Jewish) was one of the best 5 comedians during 1930-1990. He had true talent and did not have to rely on dirty language.
When ever I need to smile and have a laugh or two, I bring this clip up or any clip with Jack Benny on Carson's show. Back when stars and the hosts had real good conversations. The clip of Jack talking about his trip to London (right after the Watergate saga) is priceless delivery of good entertainment just like this one is and we just don't have that in today's world.

THE most hilarious Jack Benny/George Burns story I ever heard: They were at a party together. A woman, whose name I've forgotten, was asked to get up and sing a song. Just before she did, Jack and George took her "aside", and said SOMETHING LIKE "...now, listen, (the host of the party) has a problem with excess gas, and farts a lot. BUT, when you get introduced, DON'T think about that, and you'll be O.K. Just forget we said anything " Of course, by now, this was "burned" in the woman's brain. ("...forget we said anything ?? BRAIN SURGERY couldn't make her forget) She was introduced by the host, and when she looked at him, she totally CONVULSED with laughter. Nobody at the party could figure it out. RIP George and Jack - 2 REALLY funny gents
George Burns lived to be 100 from 1896 to 1996. Man saw everything to horse and buggy, to cars, silent films to talking films, films to video. He lived a full life.

Burns is (at this point in time) the living memory of a lot of great entertainers that are, too all too many, unknown today.
It saddens me to see how far we have dropped in talent over the last 30 years. And did George almost drop the F bomb?
When you inject neurotoxins into babies and children, what do you expect. No one is developing right these days, all the guys are stunted physically. They look like children.
He was going to say Fakakta, Yiddish meaning: something silly or ridiculous.
Yeah, he stopped himself. Closest I've ever seen him get to swearing.

@@davidgibson7044 Actually Farkahktah means shitty.
My father was born in 1933 and my mom in 1946. Mom is gone...they loved him dearly!
"My doctor's dead. " Legend.
It all seemed so natural not forced like today's talk show hosts
lol you literally cant compare hardly anything from decades ago to now. times have changed, the way ppl carry themselves changed, the content isnt the same. People today dont care for genuine entertainment just the entertainment part. he was a seasoned host
Most guests on shows today are selling their latest film. They come in with canned stories, show a clip, and leave.
I don't know what type of earth the meek shall inherit.
@@EdwardSinclair Read this, and I must say, we shall inherit the earth. What we do with our inheritance is sometimes up to us and sometimes up to mother earth. Take care.
This guy was amazing...
I loved the interaction between Benny and Burns and also enjoyed the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show ! " Say goodnight , Gracie .......... Goodnight Gracie ! "
Back when late night talk shows were worth watching!

Dave Letterman was pretty good too, no Johnny Carson but he was funny
DEEΡΞRSΗΛDΞS ofHOUΣΞ
Yes. I’d have a great time watching Johnny’s opening monologue, , then go to bed feeling great !
Conan is good..he lives by Carsons code of not using his position to politically influence his audience
Thanks for the upload! Always nice to see the great George Burns!
I lived on Elm Drive across the street from him
You lucky dog
WHAT A MEMORY THIS GREAT MAN HAD ! I COULD LISTEN FOR HOURS beautiful person rest in peace !
Good wholesome loving laughter, what an age! Thanks for uploading.
Man it would be so awesome to have gotten to sit with George burns and listen to his stories about Vaudeville and and Hollywood.
I could listen to him tell story for hours.
I could have listened to Mr. Burns all night long! What a storyteller and such a distinctive voice! Just like Morgan Freeman, in a room full of people you'd know who he was!
George Burns was a national treasure! Oh, I would've LOVED to hear him talk about legends like Al Jolson and Groucho Marx from back in the day! That era, and back through the silents, is my favorite period in stage and movie history!
I miss those two ! Such great stories.
Hello Carol, How are you doing?
"My doctor is dead." and 'You can't see bass.' was funny lines
this was edited though, so maybe he mighta.
I miss both of them so much!! I love modern comedy but there's something special about the old crew. I'm so glad we have UA-cam, not just the old crowd can remember, but also that a new group of comedy lovers can see the old guard in their prime. George Burns... what a legend!!
Miss George so much! I could listen to his stories forever! He still appealed to audiences of all ages in his advanced age! And Johnny, the best host!
He's GOD. OMG. Gracie Allen was the star of this duo for sure. She was his wife. Had a solo act like Jerry Lewis is now. Still going strong today. RIP Mary Tylor Moore. (Juvenile Diabetes)
MT Moore - what a no talent? Whom did she go to bed with?
It was an era in America we will never see likes of again. This generation saw it all and used their talents to make a living and make the world laugh and for a short time make folks forget their own problems in life!
For those who haven't read the book... it's good. Very good.
His dear Gracie died 25 years before this. What an amazing comedian she was. Everything she said was meant to be straight, but was a riot, Freudian slips by the hundreds and misunderstanding half of what folks said to her. Together George was straight man, Gracie was insane.
I truley miss George Burns. I was talking about him with my mother yesterday. How he always talked about his wife Gracie who had passed away. He always said he couldn't wait to see her. Always said at the end of his skits "Good Night Gracie". A true person! RIP George we miss you so much.
I am so glad my mom let me stay up sometimes to watch Johnny Carson.
His timing is perfect!
Johnny Carson was the greatest. Talk shows now, have no Talent.
Wayne Newton
Johnny Carson sued by Wayne Newton
George Burns (a Scottish name, though he was Jewish) was one of the best 5 comedians during 1930-1990. He had true talent and did not have to rely on dirty language.
When ever I need to smile and have a laugh or two, I bring this clip up or any clip with Jack Benny on Carson's show. Back when stars and the hosts had real good conversations. The clip of Jack talking about his trip to London (right after the Watergate saga) is priceless delivery of good entertainment just like this one is and we just don't have that in today's world.
George Burns was one of the best....if not THE BEST!
George was great, it seems so natural. Johnny seemed to be really fond of George and appeared to have great respect for the comedians that came before him, like Jack and like Hope.
i love the sound compression on this... great work! when the laughs come in it doesn't blow an ear out. taxi is alive!
George on the secret to Long life: KEEP ON BREATHING!
"my doctors dead" hahahahahha always loved George burns, his humorous wisdom. As a kid he was one of my favorite comedians.
What a treasure this way for me to see! My favorites are how he caught himself when it looked like he was gonna drop an F bomb and the seabass joke! LOL RIP George Burns
Tremendous sense of humor, I miss the guy.
Amazing man with every word being a treasure!
THE most hilarious Jack Benny/George Burns story I ever heard:
They were at a party together. Just forget we said anything "
Of course, by now, this was "burned" in the woman's brain. ("...forget we said anything ?? BRAIN SURGERY couldn't make her forget) She was introduced by the host, and when she looked at him, she totally CONVULSED with laughter. Nobody at the party could figure it out.
RIP George and Jack - 2 REALLY funny gents
The people he knew and the things he seen; the amazing life of George Burns!
I miss George (and Jack Benny) all over again 😢
George was a legend when he was alive and still a legend after his death. Amazing man George was!
Well that was just great...I was rolling when George said the waiter leaned over and told him the Sea Bass joke...George Burns = legend..
George Burns lived to be 100 from 1896 to 1996. Man saw everything to horse and buggy, to cars, silent films to talking films, films to video. He lived a full life.
Has there ever been a more perfectly timed, perfectly delivered punchline in the history of television?
George Burns, love his humidor. ;-])
Burns is obviously one of the centers of every party.
George Burns was born before my great great grand mama.
It bet she was a lot funnier than this guy.
I miss those days when comedians actually did comedy, not partisan political commentary
Well, they also had the benefit back then of no twitter, and also no maniac constantly praising white supremacists or gaslighting people that a growing pandemic is nothing to worry about so that the stock market won't tank on his watch. He's putting ALL of our lives in danger on a daily basis in one way or another, yet it's "partisan" to criticize him in any way, shape, or form.
amen RC. of course you're spitting into a hurricane, but thanks for letting us know there are still a few others out there with functioning brains
@@mercurydude Jesus Christ, shut up you drama queen
@@mercurydude Don't fret. Every single late-night "comedy" show bashes Trump incessantly. Half the country doesn't watch. It's not good for the country, no matter what you think of Trump. There are so many untold stories that died with these 2 men and sadly they will never ever be heard :(
My God, he was a FANTASTIC story teller. We will not see the likes of this level of class pass this way any time soon.
George and Gracie Show was and still is my all time favorite
