Never tried a martial art before but found myself randomly watching your videos for the past 2 or so hours. Just contacted my local BJJ school and plan to give it a go ASAP
so update: i went and someone dropped their knee into my ribs when rolling and i now have a broken and displaced rib and am not allowed to exercise for 6 weeks lol
I don't like the word ego it has a negative connotation in my opinion you should have a good self image and be confident in your skills and techniques but don't let that grow into narcissism
I'd say you nailed it. I have an ego. We all do. Your ability to be humbled by losing and realizing your not born the greatest thing on earth is where you find the drive to better yourself. I believe that's where your ego should take you. Your ego should not only be how great you are in your strengths, but also your direct acknowledgement of your weaknesses and failures. You then choose to make the excuses, cut others down or do the right thing and build up your personal kingdom.
I agree, but I believe this is people misusing the word rather than it's actual meaning. It's like the word ignorant. Ignorant sounds terrible to most people but it's a perfectly fine word if we use it as it's meaning suggests.
It’s just a definition thing. Most people think that the term “ego” means boastful or egotistical, but the true definition is more like self esteem or self image. So it’s how you balance it really, which is exactly what chewy just explained. On point
When I competed, I had an ego...it is what drove me. Now that I am older and don’t compete, I feel like it is a non-issue for me. I have redefined winning and losing.
Great perspective Chewy. Coming from wrestling, I had to learn the ego balance too. Losses can either drive you to fight harder, or shrink back and retreat. I choose to get back in the fight. This helps me understand this quote more too: “There is no losing in Jiu-Jitsu. You either win or you learn.”- Helio Gracie.
A long answer (but I have read quite a few books on this subject, both in psychology, New Age and religious literature: The ego is what all the ”mental demons” are attacking (ie thoughts of self- doubt, fear of losing). Visualizing a victory isn’t the work of the ego but the Creative principle or your Higher Self that is in everyone of us. That’s what you should identify and start getting acquainted with as often as you can. Being one with your Higher Self is also when you will perform your very best, that is when you’ll notice that all self- doubt has gone out the window and everything just clicks. Another word for that state is Flow, and it’s all about the ego taking a step back and letting the real You (the Higher self) come forth. So that’s what I am thinking when hearing the expression ”leaving your ego at the door”.
Believe you can win, and celebrate your wins. Accept all your losses, and learn from them, and don’t be bitter. Believe in yourself, and also at the same time always be HUMBLE!!!
I had my first lesson, got a triangle choke on another guy who was fairly new on my first roll and thought that bjj isn't so hard but then rolled with other guys and got submitted left and right. I felt humbled, jiu jutsi is just so amazing in that way, I'm gonna stay grounded and just learn my craft and get better.
I am a 48 year old 3rd degree white belt. I started a little over a year ago. My job as a Merchant Mariner only allows me to train with my team every other month. Maybe it is because of my age, but I had ZERO ego coming in to class. I am really having a great time. The other day, a guy who had NEVER stepped into a Jiu Jitsu Gym tell me that he was thinking about maybe starting, and for me NOT to get upset when he comes in on his first day and chokes me out. I told him that I hope he makes it that far. I also know of a few Black Belts who are looking forward to him coming in...
Good video. I have seen people's ego sabotage their growth because when rolling they only want to play to their strengths and never try anything new as it leaves them vulnerable. As a result, others in the class will pass them by as they try new things not worrying about getting tapped as a result.
Respect for your opponent (and training partners) is paramount. Truly respecting someone will prevent you from being both a poor winner and a poor loser. Respect necessitates sportsmanship. Respect prevents your ego from fully taking control of your emotions and behavior.
I've been told I'm too "nice" to roll with on occassion. But people like to roll with me because i won't injure them unnecessarily. I went to my first tournament at 200lbs as a whitebelt and got crushed. Now i feel like moving to the end of the spectrum of intensity with my rolls. Where every night is Abu Dhabi and they've got to tear my arm in half before i tap. Will my coach tell me I'm being too "rough" now? It's been hard to strike a balance Chewie...
Thank u chewy, haven't watched yet but I have lower confidence in terms of just pounding someone in a competition yet I do very well. I plan one day it will be up to me where I train and you are on that list. thanks again
You need a certain level of ego or confidence as you put it to compete, but too much leads to arrogance and is a bad thing. I don't have the ability (or haven't discovered it yet) to visualise myself winning so lack that part but have enough of an ego to get annoyed when I'm not doing well in training.
The ego in a sense that when you think you know it all and you never listen to your coaches and when you think your technique is better than your coaches and when it fails or the moves don't work you star blaming everyone and everything and it's that the negative aspect of ego. It's always good to belive in yourself and stay humble and open minded. But hey I am not perfect so what do I know
A lot of people consider what you said to mean that it does not make someone win a fight. If you can work for something, you should surely bear the consequences and I like to accomplish something and find that ego, skill, suffering etc. are what we must bear.
This happened to me couple weeks back in comp before it even got to my bracket I was thinking how I’m going to lose & team mates where saying positive things to me to get me pumped. Unfortunately I couldn’t think I can win this, like you said do great in the gym then in a comp not look like the same guy from the gym. Thanks a lot brother oss
I leave the ego at the door brotha, I'll gladly tap 100x in a week and just work my defense everyday and let the next guy have that ego trip , still working on something. No position is a bad one, they're just uncomfortable
If you compete in combat sports of any kind you most definitely need an ego IMO. Currently coming off a rough loss and injury from my last jiu-jitsu match and as soon as I could I was back in the gym getting faster & stronger. I feel like now I need to validate to myself that I'm even a good fighter and like chewy said believe that I am able to win.
Great answer - I was curious how much you used visualization. Seems to me your saying have that I have to win attitude for competition, but outside of competition (including training for competition) lose the ego & give yourself permission to lose for the sake of learning & not being an ass - or did I totally misunderstand...? 😂
Dang Chewy gives some damn great advice. I love this mentality WAY MORE than the "well damn, im gonna lose and get beat anyway..may as well do my best" yeah, i tried that mentality and actually did get beat up and fought like 🐴💩. Who knew (i did 🙋) Sounds cringe or cliche, but there really is power in belief.
Ego can be good ! I mean if my teacher ( professor) , understand that not everyone isn't doing combat sport for self defense but therapy . I mean situations differ an so do the teachers!
I like your thoughts that ego is a good thing until it gets unbalanced, and that you can have too little or too much. Do you let students know if their egos are out of balance, one way or the other?
I have been having lots of issues with not having enough of an "ego" in my game. There's no impetus to want to submit the other person or to push for a win, so I end up reacting to their game at a slower pace. Trying to find a way to push myself more...
to be honest i think i really have no ego...i just chill during every roll and get stomped left and right since im the new guy....1 year in so far....don't know if that's a good thing...i dont think so...i dont think im progressing as fast as i could if getting stomped would get me pissed.....i try to roll with as little strength as possible....im fairly muscular and often roll with weaker people, but i try not to muscle anything and just use technique...which leads to getting stomped again, lul
Thome90 im basically in the same position as you. For me i get stomped sometimes, so i always try to work from the bottom so i cant use muscle. Its helped me learn how to survive better against some of the higher belts and has opened up more sweeps and submissions against the lower ones.
Hi, I am not an expert (been doing BJJ for 2.5 yrs, blue belt) but I have some thoughts. Ive seen guys concentrate on defense (almost exclusively) for the first 2 yrs (obviously got stomped for a while) until they could hold their own against almost anyone from a defensive standpoint, then they switched gears and focused on offense (I am thinking of one dude in particular, very skinny, young but mobile dude). He has been recently promoted to purple belt and is a killer on the mats, very skilled. On the contrary, I've always liked attacking and focused on my offense and I think I'm ok but I think I am not as proficient in certain guard positions and bottom position as I could have been. Obviously, my attacks were against my level people or lower. I was forced to go full defensive against higher levels.Bottom line, there is benefit to both approaches (concentrating on offense vs defense). Perhaps, a balanced approach would be most efficient?
yüüüüah, my Trainer told me he also first only trained his defensive game...due to gettin pwned all the time ( just like me) and he's a beast also....so i still have a chance....i'm just bad as fk and a year in already...got my 2nd stripe a weak ago but i feel like im sucky sucky thank you bebeboi
I think believing that you can win and having that drive to get the win is confidence. Not wanting to lose to a lower belt or believing you HAVE to win because of this image your trying to keep up is ego. It’s ok to be confident. But humble. It’s not ok to have an ego and cocky.
I hate ego, I so many people are in jiujitsu that are way to full of them self. And, it drives me crazy. Because as a white belt I fell awful. Almost worthless. And at time I want to quit. My question is that how do you deal with people in your gym that have a ego.
Hey there! Thanks for your Videos they keep motivating me and teaching me a lot about BJJ. I've been training for almost 5 Months now and will be competing at the Munich Open for the first time. Two questions. Do you have any tips for the first tournament? What is the biggest difference between fighting in class and in a tournament? And second. I am stuck right between two weights for the tournament. Feather and Light. I am 6ft 5. and have no idea which I should go for. Thanks for your time!
Hi I’m a white belt and I’ve been doing Bjj for ab 9 months I’m a small guy ab 5’5 140lb strong for my size but for some reason when I roll even against people I’m srtonger than I always end up on my back how do I stop that?
I really wanna get into BJJ and the school near my house seems to be legit, the Professor is World Champion Rafael Lovato Jr. However, Its very intimidating and I keep second guessing my self about signing up, I'm worried about getting injured because I am not in good shape at all. I need help lol
I didn't start jits until 29 (played soccer in grade school for 2 years and that's all lol)... just do it and you will get in better shape. make sure to breath and relax and you will be fine.
you may have ego, but i do not ego is poison. i dont care if i win or lose dont mind if i win at something but its what ever i won so what? its not that big of a deal
It was really just a joke but you could apply those if you wanted to break it down. From my understanding of it you're right the Id is your desires that want to be fulfilled no matter what. The Ego is your rationalizations that you can't have everything you want. And the Super Ego is your morals that you develop and it wants moral perfection. So the Ego plays ref and balances the Id and Super Ego. That's where you want to be in this case not so far into the Id that your mad if you lose but also not so far into the Super Ego that you shouldn't want to have the drive to win. At least that's my made up on the spot take.
Haha again, we could get off into the weeds with the ego and how it works in conjunction with the Id and Superego. But again for the sake of making this video watchable. We leave those parts out.
Hey chewy, im about to sign up for my first jiu jitsu class and was wondering if I should buy a gi first or after to make sure I want to continue? Is it normal to come in without one your first class?
eagle6045 Sometimes, instructors will have a lender gi for you. I would hope they would anyway. No need to take the dive just yet on a purchase. However, you can get a good starter for about 60-80 bucks, so it’s not bad right away. You can always upgrade to something nicer when you stick with it. Hang in there! It’s a real eye opener :)
One of the locations near me holds a "NOGI" class multiple times a week. I'm not sure what the dress code is but that might be a way for you to test if it's right for you without investing any money.
You probably want to get one after your 1st class. That said, I was already buying fight shorts and training gear well before I ever stepped food in class. :)
Ego is a good thing, it gives you self confidence, but all things should be used in moderation. I did the same. Only been two weeks but it has been a great time.
Ego is good humility is good but anything in excess is bad
Very true my friend
I don't like the word ego it has a negative connotation in my opinion you should have a good self image and be confident in your skills and techniques but don't let that grow into narcissism
I don't think narcissism is the right term. I'm pretty sure that term would fit better if you had less, not more self esteem.
I'd say you nailed it. I have an ego. We all do. Your ability to be humbled by losing and realizing your not born the greatest thing on earth is where you find the drive to better yourself. The word Ego seems loaded towards the negative. I prefer the word confidence. You are either lacking, confident or over confident.
I agree, but I believe this is people misusing the word rather than it's actual meaning.

The ego
the ego was the center of the field of consciousness, the part of the psyche where our conscious awareness resides, our sense of identity and existence. This part can be seen as a kind of “command HQ”, organizing our thoughts, feelings, senses, and intuition, and regulating access to memory. It is the part that links the inner and outer worlds together, forming how we relate to that which is external to us.
I’m getting my second stripe on the 21st, I’m a white belt btw
cole bertoni couldn't tell...
Juggaliath why did you need to respond if it was going to be a garbage comment?
Well you can never be sure the exact date you're gonna get a stripe, but I sure hope you're right! :)
Aidan Dixon thanks well our coach is retiring so he’s doing a promotion night on the 21st and he said I was getting my second stripe

don't you dare use foo fighters and ' *was* popular at the time' in the same sentence ever again.
