I laughed out loud when Paul did one of the takes that is the actual take they use in the Ride, and then followed it up with, “I think that one was right on the money”. How prophetic he was.
As I said here already, somewhere, I've had a cd copy of this since 2006, and I mention that to folks sometimes that he threw that in, and it's in the ride to this day.
I wrote to Paul Frees when I was a teenager, never expecting a reply. I received an autographed picture from him, which I still have to this day. Such a talent. Such an amazing voice!
One might posit that he was the most influential voiceover artist of the 20th century!
Oh wow!
He was only 38 when he recorded this. He sounds much older. Legend.
What smoking did lol
He did a lot of old time radio.
But the really cool one (I collect his work) was a show called Studio X, and later changed to "The Player".
15 minutes or so each, and Paul does all the voices.. each episode might have 3 or 4 characters.
He was about 28 when he did them. A quick Google should give some of them up easily, if you were down with hearing them?
Some people are blessed with deep, mature voices. Ever heard of Ben Patrick Johnson? He started his voice career (movie trailers, radio station imaging, etc.) in his early 20s but sounded like a man in his 40s or 50s.
Yup, everyone was smoking 75 packs a week. @@morgancloutier5908
@@lowbaritonewwj his voice in 1950 sounds different than his voice in 1970 it’s probably because of smoking
This man was PERFECT for Paul Frees, feels so weird hearing him make jokes and have a normal vernacular 😂
Recently visited Disneyland and caught the Lincoln show for the first time. Right away there was Paul narrating and I was like, it’s the haunted mansion guy!!! Great voice!
Imagine if Disney just decided to randomize what takes are used throughout the ride.
Think about how bewildering it would be for a fan going into the mansion, only to hear the Ghost Host’s lines sounding *slightly* different. You can’t quite tell what’s different, but you know that something’s off. It would be subtle, but incredibly effective.
That would be awesome.
What a gem! The voice of Paul Frees was a staple in my life! I grew up about 15 minutes from Disneyland in Huntington Beach and they gave deals on yearly passes to the locals, so we practically LIVED at Disneyland! I can't imagine anyone else voicing our beloved Ghost Host! 💜✌️👻
The most recognizable voice in history that no one knows who's it is. I went to the Haunted Mansion as a kid in summer '72. Greatest attraction there! This voice segment was played at the entrance in the room that becomes an elevator.
It's so fun and interesting hearing all the different takes, different dialogues and iterations of the famous lines from The Haunted Mansion.
Such a familiar, perfect voice. I could listen to him all day.
I just love listening them recording this and then hearing the ones that made the cut and putting myself in the moment and thinking: “yeah that was a good take! I liked his bold choice and different voice direction to that one.” So cool to hear and almost 30 mins of dialogue 🥰
Yes it is!
Since I was a child I’ve loved the Haunted Mansion album so much, and hearing these today is a great treat I certainly never could have hoped for. Thank you sincerely for sharing them with us.
Wonderful voice. I could listen to him all day❤.
He really sounds a lot older than he looks! This is the first time I ever saw how he looks. Now I'll see his face in my head when I go on the haunted mansion! Lol
You could watch Howard Hawk's Thing From Another World. Look for Dr. Voorhees, the man in the blue sweater. He was 31 and he played my favorite character in that movie.
Listening to the commercials for the 2023 movie remake... sounds like they re-used some of THIS audio for voice-over inserts, some 50-plus years later!! ❤
I believe they did too!
So nice to hear him record his voice and hear the ones that didn't make the cut also I love the talk sessions between the lines and takes
Honestly wish he was still living
"We know a remote, derelict mansion in the American south where 999 ghosts come out to socialize... Every July, peas grow there..."
Greatest voice for the job!!!
Love Paul's work!
I love the other voices he tried as well... like the vampire voice and the Peter Lorre impression
I can really tell the cuts they keep 😂 I’ve rode it so much
Oh yeah, I can too.
his voice is so good
What if Paul Frees is actually haunting the mansion since he’s dead? (RIP Paul 😢)
The world may never know
I’m sure someone’s said it plenty already, but it’s kinda surreal hearing the takes that were actually used and immortalized in the track for the ride.
Just goes to show that it’s worth getting the perfect take, even if it’s not entirely intentional.
Paul Frees provided voices for King Features Syndicate, Hanna-Barbera, and Rankin-Bass.
1:58 The take used for the ride
1:58 ❤
I always wondered who voiced the Ghost Host on THE HAUNTED MANSION ride.
He also voiced Toucan Sam and the Pillsbury Doughboy among others.
He's so good!
I think he did other recordings with his voice sounded a little different like delays and stops, and safety spiels which one was from New Orleans Square not in the clear but was from Liberty Square (keeping all of you inside and watch children, followed by a Spanish spiel).
When Paul Frees sees me dressed up as Sally Slater the tightrope walker from The Haunted Mansion, he'll *** his pants and ROFL at the same time. Problem is, he passed away from heart failure a long time ago which was 37 years ago in November 1986.
He is right up there with Mel Blanc in my opinion.
He’s like the next best thing to Orson Wells long before Maurice Lamarche.

That laugh maked me laugh
EPIC LEGEND.
I miss you, my dear friend, every single day.
Genius
Paul Frees sounds like Orson Welles
Really? In my opinion, I think that Paul Frees sounds like Dracula if he swallowed the cello.
Omg yaaaaaas!
"It's like giving Whiskey to an Indian"! Lol too funny and I'm part Native American and that was not even offensive. If he had said that today, he would have been fired from people who complain who aren't even Native Americans! Lol.
Exactly, it’s not racist or anything, it’s just something that used to happen in the past, Native Americans would be more prone to alcohol addiction, this is a proven fact they did a study on it, and a saying came out of this phenomenon which isn’t seen as much in today’s world
3:04 Playful Spirits have interrupted our recording. Please remain seated with your... DOOM-Oghrams over both ears, and we'll continue our listen.
He sounds a lot like Malachi Throne
3:06. Context is very needed…
That was weird huh? Lol
The reason why it sounds like this, is because in the recording sessions, the voice actors would say something that’s gibberish, when they’re done recording that line, you can also hear as well with Sallah in the Indiana jones adventure at the beginning of the ride, you kinda hear random gibberish before you enter the chamber of destiny.
My favorite Ghost Host is still the guy on the Haunted Mansion In Story And Song.
I believe it’s the same guy
@@fonso1030 no. It's Pete Renaday. I just Googled it.
@@musicbox63 on the record with Ron Howard? I love that LP
That Voice Sounds Like Dr. Facilier From The Disney Movie, The Princess And The Frog.
Not exactly! It was Keith David as Dr. Facilier from the flick that you're talking about where we get to see our First Black Princess.
Yeah Your Right I Wasn’t Paul Frees That Voiced Dr Facilier From The Princess And The Frog. It Was Keith David. But Their Voices Do Sound Familiar.
What was that at like 3:15? Creepy sounded like it was being played backwards lol

Where was this compiled from? Is there a CD?
No, I think this somehow just slipped out of the building at some point.
I have a friend with connections in animation that got me a cd copy of this back in 2006.
I'm kind of surprised to see it uploaded to UA-cam here, fairly recently
@@lowbaritonewwjwouldn't be surprised if they were sitting on it for a few years before uploading so whoever grabbed it would be less likely to get caught

Giving whiskey to an indian...hmmm
Like giving whiskey to an indian.
-records godlike lines
-says the most racist shit imaginable
-proceeds to make generation defining media
@@Ducks4lif3 I don't believe he meant that to be racist. Moving forward, please remember that vintage audio recordings, films etc are going to have things that are considered offensive and ultra "PC" nowadays. 😒
@@nostalgik._ i think my comment illustrated that pretty well but i respect your perspective.
This is the kind of thing I love about the original Haunted Mansion it has jokes and references that fly over modern viewers heads but were well known in the time when it opened
Can someone explain why that’s bad?
"Like giving whiskey to an Indian". Today, he'd be fired and never heard from again. Ironic. In our quest for tolerance, we've become completely intolerant.
It was 1969, remember that.
Intolerant is a weird way to say respectful of other human beings but okay.
@@thatoneoddball2564 I guess you're part of the problem
@@kewrock no the problem is bigotry. You're rolling aces on that so far
Thing is man, back in 69 no one cared what minority groups thought of what other people said about them. Many, many actors now comment how deeply ashamed they are of older works they did as they were unaware of how insulted groups felt.
Paul Frees is a Cancer, born on June 22nd.
Now all I can hear is that racist whiskey to an Indian line
@1badmammerjammer, Paul Frees comment wasn't meant to be racist, back when he said it. He was comparing his happiness, at having extra time for his recording, to the happiness that Native Americans must have felt at being given alcohol to drink. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less. He explained it in a radio interview many years ago. To him it was just an expression. Paul Frees was a very kind man who loved his fans and was generous with his free advice to aspiring voice actors.
