7 years ago we went to see Lorde perform live in a small unassuming venue before she became a bigger entity and although she was shy and overwhelmed you could see she was destined for great things🤗

I love how the whole stage - the background singers and musicians, the outfits, the floral decorations and the hazy, reddish light- represents her ‘stoned mindset’, a chill and cozy fantasy world full of weird ideas and thoughts; and then, however, the little table-thing like she would be sitting at the nail salon as the only little piece of reality.
This is the perfect visual representation of this song, especially the lyrics in which she drifts into that dream world with so many different, incoherent thoughts with the realization “maybe I’m just stoned at the nail salon” as her only little connection to reality

As a writer, I have always known that Lorde's songs should not be considered "good" or "bad", because when you analyze creations it is impossible to devalue a jewel that comes from the heart and from a creative effort, even if the instrumental production does not It is at the height. It is simply art. Stoined at the nail salon is an intimate revelation of Lorde's fears, of knowing that at her age she has made thousands of happy hearts and landed a position in the industry, but in exchange for what? of her normality, of her basic rights to privacy and to fall in love like any other girl. Even with an excellent reputation, she will always ask herself in her solitude if that is the right way; if after so many tours and so many albums she becomes a memorable artist who nevertheless has an empty life and broken love relationships due to her constant obligations. That is why after Melodrama, she withdrew from the media completely and wanted to return to herself. She loves music and she loves going into the studio, but she hates the fame, the shallowness of the star world, being photographed in a restaurant when she just tries to have breakfast like everyone else does. And those are things that money cannot buy. In the song she says that "when she calls her dog, he comes", and the song is already painful, do you imagine me when her dog died? It must have been terrible for her. In the first part she talks about something missing, in the second she makes a brief mention of her ex-partner, and at the end she mentions her family/friends. She is simply watching the passage of time, the arrival of old age, the enormous losses that have happened and those to come. It is that attempt to manipulate time to return to all the places you love and cannot. She knows this well, and so beyond making a moving and tearful statement, she tells herself that this is the law and tries to seek her mental order again, as if everything she just said was apparently childish because she just lost her composure after chemicals in the salon hit her head (and we all know they don't).
