  • See round the clock 9th Tactical Air Force Martin Marauder B-26 missions in the spring of 1944 leading up to the D-Day landings. To maximize usage of available aircraft and personnel, squadrons often flew two a day “Doubleheader” missions. You'll see base operations in England followed by Marauders striking a wide variety of locations including supply depots, enemy airfields & more. The first mission would launch at first light, form up and fly to France or other nearby destinations in German occupied Northern Europe, drop their loads and return to base in England. Then all aircraft would refuel & rearm in 45 minutes while crews grabbed a quick lunch, and then immediately take off to fly another mission that afternoon. Missions were flown at ten to twelve thousand feet and encountered heavy FLAK coming and going. Highlights include scenes featuring the legendary 323rd Bomb Group “White Tailed Marauders” identifiable by the white stripes on their tails, B-26 “Truman's Folly” that flew 177 missions and a 19 year old pilot belly landing a damaged B-26 with only one landing gear down, sustaining minimal damage. This documentary was shot by the 4th AAFCCU and was only shown to serving personnel.

During WW2, the US army had a training squadron in Jamaica at Vernam Field (36 AIRWAYS DITACHMENT). An B-26 Bomber asign to that squadron crash at sea during a training mission in Jan. 1945 and all 6 crew members perish. It happen in site of residents of Rocky Point, a fishing village not very far from the base and they were first on the seen but only one body was recovered. I've been researching the inccident for years and the wreck is still their.

One a Day in Tampa Bay was the moniker for the B-26 Marauder, Not to be confused with the then A-26. Invader which then went on to serve in 3 wars, WW2 Korea, Vietnam.

"Teuman's Folly" ( 3:47 in) was a thinly veiled reference to then Sen. Harry S. Truman. His committee on wasteful war spending had an engineer testify before it who stated that the B-26 was airworthy. The plane was renamed in November of 1944.
