The Original Dune Movie Was Weird

- Believe it or not, this scene in David Lynch's Dune was completely made without using any CGI and was actually hand-drawn.
Something that is very impressive considering there were no computers back in the day. Still, I can't help but to see Roblox characters in this scene.

The shield effect wasn't CGI, they had to draw them frame by frame.
That means same as cartoon?
@@Riza.ra. I'm not very familiar with the details but I assume the technique they had to use would have been the same as it was with making cartoons back in the day. Since they couldn't use CGI for the movie, everything was done with models, miniatures, and hand drawn/shaded effects.
its probably more like rotoscoping@@Riza.ra.
They shouldn’t have…
It looks ridiculous but it's very impressive
Hey guy, CGI didn’t exist in 1984… you mean rotoscoping.
Wrong, first cgi was used in 1973´s westworld
Correct^!
@@LukasHylsky An Lynch basically wanted to use computer graphics for this sequence, but was told that the technology just wasn’t there yet. Instead, they emulated the look of Cgi while rotoscoping. That is why everyone who sees this for the first time thinks its early cgi.
I love the original 😊
It was hand painted on the film I believe
"CGI back then" 😂 tf you talking about
He’s 10 with broccoli hair and hay tattoo
Zoomers amirite
@@Kaizen747 this guy doesn’t speak for all of us, it’s pretty common knowledge that CGI wasn’t a thing back then
“I don’t know if it’s cgi” so, tf are you talking about?
@@sebastianochoa8639what are you talking about 😂
Now imagine in the future when they look back on UA-cam videos and they ask why all the UA-camrs sound like that.
Seriously. Why do all UA-camrs sound like retárds?
It’s a hard watch anytime someone talks like this
It was weird, no doubt. But I think that worked in its favor. Herbert liked the film, and he is the one who actually created Dune.
I would like it too if it was the first time I got to see my series of books finally into a movie. I think he would love the new versions even better if he were alive today.
@@casedistorted There are a lot of authors who trash adaptations of their work. So I think it's highly unlikely Herbert would like the film simply because it was the first time he got to see his series made into a movie. You don't spend that much of your life working on something without becoming protective about it. So while you might would just like it because it was the first time you got to see your book made into a movie, authors who really care about their work don't work like that.
Couldnt' agree more @@TheBerylknight
1984 was rushed throughout the whole movie
He did? Because I'm pretty sure Lynch missed the entire point of Dune
It went from Patrick Stewart to Josh Brolin😂😅
Gotta love it
From Captain Picard to Thanos! 😅
From Professor X to Thanos
The description of Halleck in the book sounds more like Garey Busey.
From professer X to Cable
@@PeckiePeckimagine that lmao
Very impressive for 1984
Especially with how well lit the scene is
Not really
Have you seen space Odyssey...it was released in 1968...but it still holds its place because of quality.the movie feels like it's made in 80's.
Return of the Jedi was impressive for 80’s sci-fi. This was a train wreck.
Have you seen Star Wars: New Hope?
They drew that on the movie film roll...
Frame. By. Frame.
Its impressive at its ridiculous
Wizard of Oz had to do similar to that with the color
Part of Dune's charm has always been its weirdness
It’s a film like no other for sure. I love it for its flaws, not just despite them.
I prefer this to the 2021 movie
You think this is weird? Try looking up the adaptation Alejandro Jodorowsky wanted to make in the 70s, but never got a chance to film. I’ve seen concepts of what the intro alone would have been like - a massive zoom-in effect on the whole universe that even CGI today would probably have had trouble putting off. They even wanted Salvador Dali, the famous surrealist painter, playing the Emperor, and Orson Welles as Baron Harkonnen. If they had ever made that movie, trust me, this probably would’ve looked tame by comparison
@@jekw23yall are stuck in your ways saying you prefer this over the new movies😂😂
@@MtpMuzik yep
@@jekw23bruh lmao nahhhhhh
More like Roblox looks like Dune 1984. Actually I like Lynch’s movie better than the current one. It’s way grittier and weirder. More book accurate too💯
Agree! 💯💯💯
I loved the 84 version. It's the perfect level of weirdness and the aesthetic of it is perfect.
I totally agree.
Couldn’t agree more
There are some scenes in the original that is much better the the latest.
It's suppose to be weird. David Lynch makes 'weird' movies. That's his style which makes 84' Dune great.
I was kinda missing that weirdness factor from the latest ones.
The Weirding Way...
"it's not awful cause it's supposed to be awful" you guys are a joke
@voidwarden1413 Dune is a weird story. In the original book Paul's sister is born during a timeskip and already has the mind of an adult, so there's a toddler talking like a grown woman and killing the baron. Dune just is very strange
It’s his worst movie by far and even he lynch hates it and doesn’t like to talk about it
The effect is so cool. The idea of them looking like this is kinda bad ass. Out dated future tech is the best
Still a badass movie
This was pretty impressive back in the day
A great Rotoscope Movie with Keanu Reeves is " A Scanner Darkly " its WAY ahead of its time .
Wow I haven’t seen someone bring up that movie in maybe a decade. Me and my stoner buddies LOVED that movie in Highschool. That and “Waking life” are Both way ahead of their times. Add me if you ever read this! I just subbed to your channel!
@@Pariah_LarryMy friend played bass on the soundtrack for both of those movies. And he even appeared (in animated form) in Waking Life. They're both classics.
For all of us that watched it back then it was mind blowing, it’s one of the most iconic sci-fi movies of all time
Thank You, I've been saying this all along. I don't care what "Critics" say
wish I could watch the 4 hours version today would be amazing...
Yes !!!!!! AND THEY WILL ADMIT IT !!!!!😂😂😂😂😂 because the older film works the subtle nuances that endear people to the book. They will watch the old one to see the differences & be fully entertained.
Cool, but man.... XDDDD
@@cedricthomas4867i don't think that is how work
I actually prefer this. The new shields are so small that they don't seem to protect much. These look heftier and seem more protective.
😂
What the hell are you on right now
considering how old the movie is, those are some amazing looking shields.
Product of its time. Were it not for pioneers, we wouldn't be where we are today.
I don't care What Any "Critic" says.....This Movie was excellent and a Classic.
The movie was great despite the effects being subpar. If they had Lucasfilm's light and magic, it would rival Star Wars.
In 20 years you will laugh at the present version.
To be honest there are nothing to laugh at. Just a grey mass.
I think the shielded fight scenes could have been way better if the blocky energy fields were only visible upon being struck, but that may have been too hard to do with visual effects at the time.
smart hahaha i was thinking the same… or just an invisible field and they faked not being able to get close to the body… not need to make this mess just let the watcher immagine there is a force field
They look like 2 jellos fighting for who is going to stay in the fridge 😂
always loved the shield fx in this
New flash, there was no CGI back then… the novel by Frank Herbert is by any measure “weird” so not sure what you were expecting, especially with David Lynch’s spellbinding screenplay and storytelling. This particular scene is one of the great interpretations of this part of Herbert’s novel. It puts Villeneuve’s same scene to shame.
imagine you learned a little bit of history in 2024.
The only true cgi movie at that time was the last starfighter and needed a Cray Super conputer to render it
💯💯✌️
I saw this movie in theater, it was years forward others. At the end me and friends we did stay to watch it another time. Fantastic special effects! ❤
What's that f****** Patrick Stewart
Bro just found out?
yes, and they gave him a battle pug
The movie is amazing.
@@AvantNoir I've only seen the 2021 Dune
I still love this movie, even more than the new films.
Ha! He said, “CGI.” 😂
This version had such a cool look and feel and I loved the whispered thoughts. Too bad the studio butchered the movie. Supposedly a massive chunk was cut out by the studio for running time.
That's a shame.....this movie was a classic.
The new movie even more weird at storyline and characters representation.
Well, when I was in the seventh grade, when this movie came out, it was state of the art, baby! Cult classic
In the 1970s, we had to read this series in undergrad English class. Most of us were dedicated students, but we struggled with this. Was very confusing.
It’s weird to think of this book being academic with how much of a pop culture classic it is now
Wow, that's interesting. What made Them Choose Dune?
@@Sidewinder528 The voice told them the spice must flow I guess
@@Sidewinder528Dune has interesting character depth and themes/ideas that can be studied and discussed about
It was extremely complicated to read, but it was so worth it.
It was awesome. Sting as Feyd can never be duplicated. Fear is the mind killer!
Literally had to paint each individual cube face onto each shot. It took 9months. There was no CGI.
I still prefer this version to the new one but I enjoy both really
It's interesting to see just how differently two people can interpret the same source material
Looks awesome imo
I love patrick Stuart, as a theatre actor. He got better with more film experience buuut can still be very stage like at times.
80s movies are like fever dreams
Idk why but the original dune movie looks like if someone looked up “dune if it was an 80’s movie” in ai, like this feels weird for the 80’s the whole movie looks like AI
I remember watching it as a child maybe 20 years ago and since then i always wanted to read the books. When the remaie came out i was like"oh, the weird movie with the worms and the funny looking costumes"
"CGI? They can't make things like that yet." "Not for about 40 years"
i love this mocie in its 3 hour form. fyi CGI wasn't even thought of. it was hand drawn
Did you seriously call the original Dune Roblox? 🤣
Watch more David Lynch to understand Dune’s weirdness.
The Harkonnen had red hair, which is more faithful to the book. And of course Sir Patrick (and his pug) was outstanding. All the rest is better in the new movies 😅
knowing what they are trying to potray makes it less bad
I like the Geo metric force fields. A cool look that could be explained by the geometry that generated the field.
This is incredibly impressive, those shield were hand drawn, no CGI back then.
Wait! Sting, Al, Captain Picard and Agent Cooper are all in the same room?!!!! 🎵 ⏰🚀🔥......🤯
Dune 1984 is the best 💪🏽
Gurney: Not sorry enough
- became Minecraft killing machine
Wait you mean that special effect from 1984 movie are less good than 2024 pretend to be shocked
This was abysmal
Looks like the door came off its hinges
Guerny didn’t say “role playing and cattle” he said “cattle and women”
This was the best Dune movie
Old school sci fi was amazing. Makes you appreciate the new films.
This looks like the same effect they had in "Superman" when displaying the Phantom Zone.
Maybe they thought people would appreciate the effects more than the choreography.
After this movie people were like: Dune can't be filmed. Denis Villanueve was like Hold my sandworm!!!
Bro become Minecraft
Mfs are moving like Gumby
mf cgi didn’t start use until the late 80s and early 90s💀
Further proof that gen z can’t suspend their disbelief for the sake of story unless a family guy clip is playing with subway surfers
bro someone had to draw that frame by frame. no cgi OG SHIT!
Oddly enough I enjoyed this. On the CG, Melinniums know nothing lol
Bro thinks computers have been around since the dawn of time.
Yo the concept was fucking baller
It was weird but way more entertaining than the new Dune which was beautifully shot but a snore.
Yooo Patrick Stewart is fkn scary as gurney holy shit, and the voice in the head makes it seem like an anime haha, I gotta watch this
Lightsaber sound
CGI back then lol! That shit was all practical effects; matte paintings drawn on for the backgrounds and animotronics for the worms and navigators, and when you Frankenstein them together, you either get a masterpiece (like The Terminator), or a huge piece of garbage (which this Dune movie turned out to be), it's weird how little of an in-between there actually was. What's sad is when guys like James Cameron were actually able to use what little budget money they even had for special effects, and they STILL made CLASSIC movies like The Terminator that have stood the test of time.
The 80s Dune movie suffered the same fate as Clash of the Titans did. The practical effects just weren't there yet to try and tackle projects like Dune. The only way they could've done it was as an animated movie.
Bro, that's The Captain from HIMYM
Thats not CGI, they didnt have those yet... Also "Im sory Gurney" really got me laughing
I recently watched it too and it’s super straight forward. I loved it and the way the story was set up. Barron in this version was a mad clown and Paul was even more badass. If you’re a movie buff I 100% recommend.
They literally had to draw these frames by hand
The best version of Dune from '84 is Spicediver's fan edit. It's excellent.
For the times this movie was great in the way of special effects. Ahead of the times even.
Ah…you know you’re young when you think there was CGI in 84 😂
Jodorowsky's version would've been bat-shit insane. Glad we got this one instead.
This scene is straight outta the book, tho. I wanna watch it now to see if it's a more direct re-telling of the story than the current movies
Hahaha I laughed So HARD but i wonder if they will laugh about us in 40 years with the cgi they will use
They look like Napoleonic era Russian officers.
Jean-Luc Picard fighting hand-to-hand with Lyle Van de Groot? What in the world?
That's Kyle MacLachlan.
That's Orson Hodge.
CGI did not exist at the time of the movie that is hand drawn to look like something a computer would make
Well David Lynch directed this version, the same guy who directed Twin Peaks. That show got really weird starting in season 2.
The drew this frame by frame on the film imagine how much effort that took.
The effects like really does look those paths making thingy you got from beating a obby
There is no comparison to the original Dune movie
That shield made them look like techno-Roblox.
Thats not CG but hand animation
This is 1984. Gotten take that into account.
I sort of like that that did Paul's inner monologue or at least some of it he has in the book, but I think Timothee did well showing it in his expression and Josh Brolin in his intensity. Think I like what they did in the newer movie better just for flow sake.
This was just a David Lynch choice. His VFX have always been… unique.
this film is so much better than the new one
I think it’s wicked! I love rotoscope!
