- Legendary catches: Captain Joel Ralston's Condor expedition with giant Bluefin Tuna. Shout out to Quentin and Thor for their help in making this video.
Awesome video cousin Jim, watched every minute. Going on my first father-son tuna trip next week, can’t wait. Do you do braided line to a flouro top shot to a flouro leader? 🎣
this trip I was tied straight braid to 200# 4' leader
but here is my normal set upua-cam.com/video/7R8YJl6utZ4/v-deo.html
Absolutely love these videos on fishing in San Diego for tuna. I grew up in San Diego and I would do odd jobs to make the money to go fishing 2-3 times a year.
Now, I live in the southeast and I’ve been looking at deep sea fishing charter of companies. Offshore fishing is not where the same quality of fish. I have yet to find any quality charters. Who would you recommend for similar type of fishing
I'm starting to look for a yellowfin trip in Louisiana is that close to you? they seem to get some big ones.
@@cousinjim1 I’m close to Jacksonville.
@@PapaJohn1969 I hope to do it this year
I love how you took the time to remember peoples names on the boat from the crew side to the fisherman. Makes for great camaraderie and overall experience!
Thanks for noticing I work hard at making these videos for you guys
Tight lines
Did I get it right?
300 lb. leader (4 ft.)
600 lb. swivel
60 lb. floral leader (100 ft.)
80 lb. braid (300 ft.)
100 lb. backing
my blue braid is 60 or 65# this trip I tied it straight to my jig leader as I lost the flouro on the last trip with jig fishing at night you do not have to hide your line
ua-cam.com/video/7R8YJl6utZ4/v-deo.html
Nice job landing that fish, 60lb is petty light for night fishing. I run my Mak 16 100lb Braid, 100LB Mono Top with 200LB leader to Jig or Mak 20 130lb Braid, 100LB Mono Top with 200LB leader on 80-150 rated rods like a UC Viper or recently started using Daiwa Proteus Tuna Rods, and I can just crank them in, fight usually last about 15 min-20min tops. Heavy line, and higher rated rods make a big difference on night bite. During day i'll use 60lb or 80lb setup unless they are picky and drop to 40lb setup.
Also noticed on your jig you only have assist hooks at the bottom, i always rig a single assist hook at the top connected to my leader so that if the tuna headshakes the jig won't cause the hook to come out. Never lost a Tuna setup this way.
@@pbubu313 thanks for the info I am going out tonight and rigging an assist hook at the top of my new jig that fish I lost was my fault because my reel was in low gear and I could not keep the line tight when he turned. tight lines my friend
Jim, you still have 60lb braid on that makaira 16?
yes the blue braid is 60 or 65# it drops a little faster with my 300gm jig
@@cousinjim1 so no need for the 100-130lb braid, look at that monster you caught on lets say 65lb braid
@@Tony67032 the way I see it at strike the max drag on this reel is 34# at max it is 48# I almost never go past strike when fighting a fish so the drag should slip before there is a line break. plus I almost never go full strike on the first or second run. I did lose one when my braid broke but I believe it must of had a nick in it but I was also at full strike on the initial run. I've caught 400# sharks on 35# test diawa 8000 spinner set your drag and never touch it works for me tight lines Tony!
@@cousinjim1 lol you got 50% of the breaking strenght of the line , Yeah I agree on all that
@@Tony67032 my backing, the white line is 100# I may never need to change it
Put your purse down and WIND!!! I would be screaming at you if i worked this trip. WIND, just WIND!
does my purse match my shoes, some times these old bones need a break catch em up!
23:15 I had to pop a couple 800mg ibuprofens on your behalf,,,,,,, I felt your bicep and lower back pain all the way up here in Seal Beach. Nice job Cuz,,,,👍🏻
you are correct sometimes I feel them!
The best first person Blue fin fishing videos on UA-cam
thanks part 2 Thursday
Rite on for the kid,,,,,that’s RAD,,,,,first BFT 🙌🏼
it always scares me I think they will let go of my rod! but I will keep hooking and handing
Hey Jim. When the captain is calling the depth, is it in feet or yards or meters?
@@rickyhaduca3977 sometimes in feet and sometimes in fathoms when he’s calling out fathoms, you just multiply by six to get the feet
Also what would help you is keep yoir rod under your left arm and feather the spool with your left hand. Your right thought should be on the lever then immediately to the crank. Just my 2 cents
thanks for watching Just caught one last night and forced myself to fish it as you just said Monday 5pm video
@@cousinjim1 awesome
@@corefishing4858 glad you enjoyed
Dang that’s kid is lucky it would be amazing to go on one of these I just don’t have the money. It would also be amazing to fish with you. You are an amazing person.
It was pretty amazing on this trip we caught 7 total Jason is the dad and chase and Thor are his sons so one family caught 3! Maybe when the fish get close this summer you can catch a half day boat or 3/4 day and get you one I hope it happens tight lines
Lol i tripped over a boat anchor fighting a schoolie.
the fish will get you when they can LOL
New sub!!! Love the video 👍 I got two days trip coming up in August with the same boat you on and hope I can do as good as you did. I’ll take any advice that you can give me, mainly hooks and jigs cause I don’t have much luck at on my last trip. Keep filming and I will keep watching 👍
part 2 Thursday 5 pm the rental gear is high quality you can get what you need at the landing

2.5 tomorrow evening!! Great vid Jim!

When you gonna do a “Cousin Jim Charter?”
I want to do it but it is hard to commit to buying out the boat coming soon
@@cousinjim1 Yes I hear ya.
Did I see you using a short top shop?
I’m still fishing Cat and will do a 1 1/2 day real soon.
At 72 now I’m on one knee now. Love the cardio workout lol…with some help😁
@@Blueskies-h3e I just lost 45# and I still am breathing to hard but it sure is fun! Glad you are still doing it I can't get my father to go any more but he is 90 I'm 66
Hey good video..what rod were you using for the night fishing? Looks like the reel is a mak 20.
Okuma 16 on an okuma pch rod
Cousin Jim is the tuna slayer haha
I sure try hard! tight lines
THANKS FOR THE CONTENT COUSIN JIM!!! We love you man!!! Glad you had a good trip
thanks for watching tight lines
Man, you really have your depths. Markers dialed on your line. You're on those numbers. The captain throwing out quick as hell You've really improved with your jig.Fishing the And your videos have improved as well, Hell, yes, so stoked for you can't wait to see part 2.
thanks for watching
Great video! Glad you didn't get hurt. I've gone down myself. Got bruised up but survived.
I still bounce pretty good bur I would rather stay on my feet
It’s always fun and exciting watching your videos. You give us a real feeling like we are with you fishing .
Nice fish . Too bad that kid lost his . I am sure he will get another chance
he got bit two more times but not hooked up he will be a great fisherman
That was a blue ya got there the first time and that second one is a shame that was nice fish to , congratulations on ur trip on the condo 😅😅😅😅😅😅
part 2 Thursday 5 pm I think the one I lost was bigger than the first tight lines Chris
Nice job Jim you're killing it! ( fished with you last trip on Condor)
thanks for watching
I’m going to be on this same boat in two weeks!! Can’t wait!
Hope you get a limit tight lines!
What trip are you on? I’ll be on the 2 day on the 26th
@@jayfron6012 6/5/24 1.5 day
How’d you do?
@@rossginn1171 the two I'm touching were mine
Yeah, keep that rod under your left armpit while dropping down. Them all you need to do is engage reel and reel fast rather than switching arms….your hook ups will increase….promise. Great vid!
thanks for the tip keep on watching and tight lines
Got a trip on the condor at the end of the month! This has me really excited
part 2 Thursday 5pm tight lines
Nice one, Jim! That fish put you to the test, but you showed it who's boss.
they all put me to the test and I love it
A bit better Jim. Focus a little more on your breathing. Slow down body and mind. Your cow is coming. Notice when you drop to low your drag may seem looser. Then use your hand to lock the fish down and kill it quickly. Be ready every drop. Blessings.
I'm always expecting the a bite on every drop Fishermen are fisherman
one more thing i would say on the second fish prob went into second speed too soon when it charged the boat could not keep tight allowed fish to spit. or just big fish doing big fish things
@@MTSportfishing that is absolutely correct I almost never use the low gear and I could not keep up when he turned
I laughed my ass off when you fell down. LOL, you weren't talking so much shit after that haha. I loved it when you told that guy not to drop next to you and he ignored you. Welcome to party boat fishing.
when I saw it was James I said go ahead because he will not panic if we rap up I've fished with him several times yeah that brace for the door jumped out and grabbed my foot LOL tight lines!
Great job Cousin Jim, especially getting up and back into it. Had that happen to me, I will tell you next time we share the rail. 2 other things to incorporate to your arsenal when killing the fish: stand tall, sit back on your heels. Tight lines and following seas!
@@jamesjacobs1901 Thanks Red can't wait to fish with you again going Wed on the Highline out of Seaforth for me new boat and landing
What boat you going out on next?
6/12 Highliner out of Seaforth new boat and landing for me
Jim, what size Makaira is that?
ua-cam.com/video/7R8YJl6utZ4/v-deo.html tight lines
how many yards of the blue braid do you tie to your white back braid?
100 yards marked at 100' 200' that is how I know about how deep my jig is
ua-cam.com/video/7R8YJl6utZ4/v-deo.html
@@cousinjim1 is there a knot you’d recommend tieing braid to braid?
i was thinking of spooling my 80lb setup (Shimano Speedmaster 25) with 600yds of 80lb Daiwa J Braid and a double uni knot to an additional 100yds of 80lb braid with mono topshot.
is that too many knots that could lead to failure?
@@vintkh629 I actually have the tackle shop do my splices when putting line on but I use one of the shops where they are dealing with bluefin all the time Anglers Choice, Fisherman's landing Point Loma landing, H&M landing ect.
this trip my jig was on a 4' 200# leader tied directly to my braid no flouro top shot
Lie bait you need the top shot tight lines hope this helps
Hey Jim, if you can get used to tucking that rod under your left arm pit it really helps keep you moving, and safe when going up the rail. Nice fish, way to hang in there.
you are right tight lines!
your glasses fell off around 11:01 into the video. I'm surprised they didn't get smashed even more from the time you landed your fish. lol
they got stepped on Greg the galley chef gave me his extra pair
Jim. Please learn to fish & put the rod under your left armpit. Broomstick style is too slow ; ( rookie style ). You hand off way too much. Change it so you just move over & under with ease. It’s work. Deckhand should not have your rod for more than 20 seconds max & back to you. Don’t try to tell experienced guys how to fish / not good.
thanks for the info tight lines
😂 Jim’s doing fine
@@Glaciershark We do get them caught! Tight lines my friend
What kind of reel is that?
here you go ua-cam.com/video/7R8YJl6utZ4/v-deo.html
