a few things to note, if you have an oversized solar system (which is advised for permanent offgrid locations) and if its a COLD but full sun day.. you can use space heaters off of the inverter off of the solar panels during the day, use diesel/propane if cloudy and/or night conditions, waste heat systems (using motor oil) are an excellent addition for off grid heat generation too. In the end, you should not just depend no just electric or just propane or just diesel. a portfolio of heating options is best.

All good points and unfortunately not in everyones budget, for those that can only afford a small heater that do not have access to an oversized solar system this will be a much better option than a buddy heater or space heater in a grid down scenario.

What you say is that straight solar is not the end all to the new green deal bullshit I truly hope people wake up and as I say to the new green only fuks is that you need balance between all types of energy, it's common sense

The best way to keep warm is to adapt your homes gas heater so that you can start it with your solar battery. There’s videos out there that show you can use to keep warm.
You can do it yourself, but it might be best to get somebody who knows what they’re doing.
Also, an electric blanket would be better than trying to run an electric heater.
I like the diesel heater, but that would be just for one room in the house and not protect your water pipes.
For a long-term grid down situation, you will definitely need solar to charge your batteries, and a generator also. Dual generators with gas and propane are best.
It’s also important to insulate your house the best you can.

All good points thank you for bringing them, many of these have been covered in previous videos. I wanted to focus on space heaters along with better alternatives being this question is asked daily by our customers. With our -55C/-67F weather that weekend it seemed like a good opportunity. Note that with a properly insulated house a diesel heater will heat several rooms, granted a high efficient wood stove or running a furnace of of a portable power station will be the best options, and something I have personally.

I ran a Diesel Heater 2 years ago all winter no issues. Tried to do the same the following year and got an error code and the heater refused to start. IMO some have great luck with those heaters, me not so much. I bought a Quartz Radiant Heater, on the low setting it draws about 325 watts, High about 800 plus. This so far is the best option for me. Small Butane heaters are pretty good also, like the Cupid Portable Butane Gas Heater even a Heating Blanket plugged into a Power Station, will keep you toasty for many hours .There are many options if you want to stay warm in and Emergency Grid down scenario. These are not extremely long term fixes. The best option is a small wood stove professional installed or a DIY Tent Stove you can retrofit through a window. One should have all options at hand so you can adapt to your situation.

I have had to deal with the fault codes on the Chinese diesel heaters and was able to find a list of fault codes with fixes, I ended up printing it and bringing it with me when I used the Chinese diesel heater. Now that I have the Planar heater I no longer have to deal with this, not fun at -20C when a fault code stops the heat when in the mountains in a roof top tent trouble shooting with a headlamp on.

Put up a tent/tents in your house, use a small electric space heater/s with your 2k plus watt hour battery.

Would a wood burner be the best option for heat during winter if you could install one?

    • @offgridtrek

yes it would be the best option, for those that are not able to add a wood burner then a diesel heater is a much better option than a space heater

Blue flame propane indoor heater. That’s what I use here in the backwoods when the grid goes down in the winter. A Mr heater 30k btu lasts me 5 days to heat my main living space that is 24x30.

Turn the ECO MODE off - and your DC output wont turn off.
The 200Max has a 30A 12v output - you could run 3 DC fridges on that.

I had the same issue with the compressor Set Power fridge being plugged into DC or my Jackery and it not staying on and I was clueless as to why excpet the echo mode so that may possibly be the issue for me. GOOD TO KNOW !

Great video. I agree. I had a diesel heater running down here in Texas to augment our central heating. We don't get that cold, just rarely into the lower teens *F, but my house is pretty inefficient for heating. I used maybe 1-2 gallons of diesel over 2 days and little battery. As far as the Ecoflow delta 2 max. You can set the time out for the outlets. You can choose to auto shut off if no draw after a certain number of minutes/hours (which yours is defaulted to) or to stay on indefinitely. I have mine set to stay on for precisely that reason (fridge). I do wish that it had more than one 12v DC outlet though..

I like the Anker 767 with the extra battery. I run the large Rinnai direct vent propane wall furnace and so far it's working fine in these cold temps. I'M just testing it over night with these low temps to see what my next electric bill looks like. and how many hours it will run the furnace before the extra battery kicks in. The Anker recharges fast I'M very impressed with it so far.

    • @offgridtrek
      @offgridtrek  8 місяців тому +1

You can leave the diesel heater outside and have the hot air vent go through a window using a dryer vent hose then block off the remainder of the window to keep heat from escaping. It would be best to also cover the diesel heater if it is raining.
